I promised more impressive views from the hills above Toba, and here they are. They're not very hard to reach: the Hiyoriyama circuit is only a couple of kilometres long around the station and involves climbing around 50 m. Hinoyama is further away, further South and a little higher.

The views of the coastline at Toba were good enough for Hiroshige to use in his Famous Views from the Sixty-Odd Provinces to illustrate Shima province (though there wasn't much else, I presume, Shima province was tiny, it was just Toba and the neighbouring town of Shima - also Shima is 志摩 and not 島 "island").

Beyond the islands near Toba, lies the mainland again, the Southern part of Aichi prefecture across the Ise Bay (Minamichita and Tahara), which the car ferry in the above picture traverses.

Nobunaga’s had his fun now. With an army, he managed to work together with Shingen and Kenshin to defeat Orochi. But now, let’s see how one man can unite three clans together to respond to a new threat…

Chapter 9: Battle of Luosang Village 楼桑村の戦い

Coalition Army and Yellow Turbans vs. Dong Zhuo Army Allied characters: Sakon Shima Third-party characters: Zhang Jiao, ??? Enemy characters: Dong Zhuo, Goemon Ishikawa

Unlocked character: Zhang Jiao

Sakon Shima walks in a village. He decides to visit Shingen Takeda, but he sees an explosion up ahead. Dong Zhuo is attacking the Yellow Turbans led by Zhang Jiao. As Zhang Jiao cowers in fear, Sakon jumps in to save the day…

Following the defeat of Orochi, numerous skirmishes continued to break out across the land. Lu Bu, Masamune Date and Cao Cao all mobilised their armies in an attempt to seize power. On top of all this, Dong Zhuo suddenly made a play for power. Sakon Shima had to face Dong Zhuo’s army and rescue Zhang Jiao…

The Zhang Jiao Army 張角軍 is known as the Yellow Turbans 黄巾党 in this version.

Defeat Goemon and Dong Zhuo’s troops to rescue the Yellow Turban officers. Additional troops will arrive to assist them.

A mysterious man will arrive to assist Zhang Jiao. If Sakon reaches the man, he will only introduce himself as a friend. Defeat Dong Zhuo to win the battle.

In the aftermath, Zhang Jiao will thank Sakon for his “miracle from the heavens”. Sakon asks Zhang Jiao if he knows the mysterious man, but Zhang Jiao does not.

Sakon will comment that they are heavily outnumbered compared to the other armies in the land. Officers such as Musashi Miyamoto, Toyohisa Shimazu, Yoshihiro Shimazu, Xu Huang, Kanbei Kuroda, Huang Zhong, Guan Ping and Muneshige Tachibana will join him.

Chapter 10: Battle of Ji Province 冀州の戦い (uses DW5 Yellow Turban map)

Coalition Army vs. Da Ji Army Allied characters: Xu Huang, Musashi Miyamoto, Muneshige Tachibana, Zhang Jiao Enemy characters: Da Ji, Himiko, Kojirō Sasaki, Hisahide Matsunaga

Unlocked characters: Yukimura Sanada, Shingen Takeda, Kojirō Sasaki

Dong Zhuo and his army were left with no choice but to retreat. As Sakon went to visit Shingen, he wondered if the mysterious man from the last battle was driving him towards something.

Sakon comments that they need the assistance of Shingen, Kenshin and Nobunaga to defeat Orochi. He decides to start by talking with Shingen. In the meantime, Xu Huang and Musashi are attacked while they are training. They find Da Ji, along with a mysterious girl…

After defeating Kojirō Sasaki at the eastern altar, enemy ambush troops will appear at the central altar or in the southeastern area depending on where you go. Hisahide Matsunaga will appear in the opposite area as reinforcements.

When Himiko arrives in the south, Muneshige Tachibana will appear in place of Gao Sheng to stop her, but she will escape to the west as enemy reinforcements arrive to assist her (instead of later on in the original). As Himiko arrives in the west, however, Zhang Jiao will appear in place of He Yi to stop her. Defeat Da Ji and Himiko to win the battle.

In the aftermath, Kojirō will join Musashi and Xu Huang. Meanwhile, Sakon meets with Shingen, who agrees to lend assistance to him.

Chapter 11: Rescue at Hasedō 長谷堂救出戦

Coalition Army and Naoe Army vs. Sun Wukong Army Allied characters: Sakon Shima, Yukimura Sanada, Kojirō Sasaki Third-party characters: Kanetsugu Naoe, ??? → Fu Xi Enemy characters: Sun Wukong, Diamondback, Kotarō Fūma

Sakon tells Shingen that he is also asking for help from Kenshin. Yukimura Sanada will report that Kanetsugu Naoe is under attack from forces unknown. Shingen suggests to Sakon that this is a wonderful opportunity. Sakon heads out with Yukimura.

Kojirō Sasaki will appear in place of Zhang Jiao in this battle.

When Sakon reaches Kanetsugu in the flaming forest, the mysterious man from Luosang Village will arrive to reveal that the fire is an illusion. He reveals the position of the sorcerers causing it. Defeat them to extinguish the fire. The man will introduce himself as Fu Xi. He also states that Sun Wukong is also from the mystic realm like himself, working for a half-man, half-demon, Kiyomori Taira, to recruit troops for his army. Their plan is to revive Orochi.

Break through the northern gate out of the forest and defeat Sun Wukong to win the battle.

In the aftermath, Kanetsugu takes Sakon to Kenshin. He agrees to join Sakon along with the others. Fu Xi also complements Sakon for uniting the Takeda and Uesugi, saying that he is the one who can stop Orochi’s resurrection. He also joins Sakon as atonement for “testing” him.

Chapter 12: Battle of Changban 長坂の戦い

Coalition Army vs. Date-Da Ji Army Allied characters: Shingen Takeda, Kanetsugu Naoe Enemy characters: Masamune Date, Da Ji, Motonari Mōri, Keiji Maeda, Kojūrō Katakura, Takakage Kobayakawa

Sakon suggests having Masamune join his army along with Nobunaga. However, Kanetsugu believes that Masamune is still loyal to Orochi. Sakon decides to have Shingen set off for Changban in order to convince Masamune to join them.

Motonari Mōri will appear in place of Sima Yi in this battle and therefore, will not be unlocked when the battle is cleared in this version. Takakage Kobayakawa will appear in place of Dōkyū Yamagami in the ambush unit alongside Kojūrō Katakura.

In the aftermath, Shingen talks to Masamune, but he declines the offer, saying that no one has been able to keep the peace since Orochi’s death. Shingen gives the bad news to Sakon, who then remembers that there is someone that they can ask. Kanetsugu reports that Lu Bu and Kiyomori have joined forces and are laying waste to the men of Wu. Huang Zhong, Yoshihiro and Kanbei offer to assist them.

Chapter 13: Battle of Liang Province 涼州の戦い

Lu Bu and Kiyomori had joined forces to attack Liang Province, which was being defended by the warriors of Wu. Kanbei set off to Liang Province along with two veteran warriors to save the Wu Army, for if they were rescued, their assistance could be procured.

Kanbei Kuroda appears in place of Sima Yi for this battle. Han Dang will be replaced by another Wu generic officer when reinforcements arrive.

Lu Lingqi and Hou Cheng will appear with Chen Gong’s reinforcements when they arrive.

In the aftermath, Lu Meng and Gan Ning will join Sakon’s army on behalf of Wu.

Chapter 14: Battle of Hulao Gate 虎牢関の戦い

Coalition Army and Toyotomi Army vs. Taira Army Allied characters: Katsuyori Takeda, Sakon Shima, Guan Ping, Toyohisa Shimazu Third-party characters: Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Nene, Masanori Fukushima, Kiyomasa Katō, Hanbei Takenaka, Mitsunari Ishida Enemy characters: Kiyomori Taira, Diamondback, Sun Wukong, Hisahide Matsunaga

Sakon moved to the next phase of his plan. He set off with Guan Ping and Toyohisa Shimazu to gain the cooperation of Hideyoshi Toyotomi. They spot Kiyomori and Dong Zhuo up ahead at Hulao Gate.

As I stated previously, Nobunaga Oda originally appeared in both the Wei and Samurai Warriors stories for Part B, which is illogical and it robs Mitsunari Ishida of any relevance; in addition, it also robs Hideyoshi Toyotomi of prominence as he was only seen in the original games as an underling of Nobunaga. As such, Nobunaga and Nō only appear in the Wei story, leaving Hideyoshi and Mitsunari for the Samurai Warriors story.

Zhang Ren does not appear in this battle. Toyohisa Shimazu and Yoshihisa Shimazu will swap places in this battle, meaning the former will be defending the main camp alongside Guan Ping while the latter advances with Sakon.

The Hōjō officers among the enemy are replaced by Mōri officers and Hisahide Matsunaga will appear in place of Dong Zhuo.

When the Toyotomi Army arrives, Mitsunari Ishida, Masanori Fukushima and Kiyomasa Katō will appear alongside Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Nene and Hanbei Takenaka.

In the aftermath, Hideyoshi joins Sakon’s army. Sakon asks him to assist Mitsunari and Kenshin at Baidi Castle.

Chapter 15: Battle of Baidi Castle 白帝城の戦い

Coalition Army vs. Taira Army Allied characters: Kenshin Uesugi, Kagekatsu Uesugi, Aya, Mitsunari Ishida, Masanori Fukushima, Kiyomasa Katō, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Nene, Hanbei Takenaka, Hideie Ukita, Muneshige Tachibana, Lu Meng, Gan Ning Enemy characters: Kiyomori Taira, Sun Wukong, Dong Zhuo, Kotarō Fūma

The alliance to prevent the resurrection of Orochi was finally complete. In response, Kiyomori quietly concentrated his forces at Baidi Castle. Believing that Kiyomori was now attempting to revive Orochi, Sakon immediately ordered Hideyoshi and Kenshin to attack Baidi Castle…

Kenshin, Kagekatsu and Aya will advance to Baidi Castle from the east, Mitsunari, Masanori and Kiyomasa will advance from the south and Hideyoshi, Nene and Hanbei will advance from the west. Muneshige Tachibana, Lu Meng and Gan Ning will appear as the ambush troops engaging Dong Zhuo’s officers in the central path to the northwest.

Defeat Kiyomori to win the battle, but he will say that it is too late…

In the aftermath, Sakon is depressed over his failure to prevent Orochi’s resurrection, but Fu Xi convinces Sakon to put his final plan in place to defeat Orochi. Shingen accepts Sakon’s offer to join him again on the battlefield.

Chapter 16: Battle of Sekigahara 関ヶ原の戦い

Coalition Army vs. Orochi Army Allied characters: Shingen Takeda, Sakon Shima, Fu Xi Enemy characters: Orochi X, Da Ji, Masamune Date, Kojūrō Katakura, Hisahide Matsunaga, Motonari Mōri, Takakage Kobayakawa

Unlocked characters: Kiyomori Taira

Some variations have been made for the Chapter 16 battles against Orochi X. In each faction’s version, they will fight four of Orochi’s main generals. In this version of the battle, those generals will be Da Ji, Masamune Date, Hisahide Matsunaga and Motonari Mōri.

Orochi had been resurrected and was surrounded by Da Ji and Masamune. The final battle lay ahead at Sekigahara…

Hisahide Matsunaga will appear in place of Keiji Maeda with his sneak attack unit in the northwest. At the same time, Motonari Mōri and Takakage Kobayakawa will also appear with their sneak attack unit in the centre. Due to the fog around Sekigahara, both sneak attack units will reveal themselves as they approach the main camp.

Defeat Da Ji and the officers outside the enemy camp, then enter the camp and defeat Orochi X to win the battle.

• Oscar F. Perdomo (USAAF U.S Ace)

Oscar Francis Perdomo was a Hispanic United States Air Force officer and fighter pilot who was the last "ace in a day" for the United States in World War II.

Perdomo was born June 14th, 1919 in El Paso, Texas, one of five siblings born to Mexican immigrants to the United States. His father served in the Mexican Revolution under the command of Francisco "Pancho" Villa before emigrating to the United States. After completing school Perdomo enlisted in the army reserves in 1942. In February 1943, Perdomo entered an Army Air Forces (AAF) Pilot School in Chandler, Arizona. The AAF schools were civilian flying schools, under government contract, which provided a considerable part of the flying training effort undertaken during World War II by the Army Air Forces. Perdomo received his "wings" on January 7th, 1944. He was then sent to the Army Air Forces Basic Flight School at Chico, California, where he underwent further training as a Republic P-47 Thunderbolt pilot.

Upon the completion of his training he was assigned to the 464th Fighter Squadron which was part of the 507th Fighter Group that was sent overseas to the Pacific theater to the Island of Ie Shima off the west coast of Okinawa. The primary mission of the 507th was to provide fighter cover to 8th Air Force Boeing B-29's which were to be stationed on Okinawa. The 507th began operations on July 1st, 1945. Perdomo was assigned P-47N-2-RE number 146 aircraft. maintained by crew chief S/Sgt. F. W. Pozieky. Perdomo nicknamed his airplane Lil Meaties Meat Chopper with the nose art depicting a diapered baby chomping a cigar in his mouth and derby hat on his head, clutching a rifle. The name referred to his first son, Kenneth, then a year and a half old. Perdomo flew his first combat mission on July 2nd, while escorting a B-29 to Kyushu.

A "flying ace" or fighter ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft during aerial combat. The term "ace in a day" is used to designate a fighter pilot who has shot down five or more airplanes in a single day. The last "Ace in a Day" for the United States in World War II was 1st Lt. Oscar Francis Perdomo. Perdomo was a first lieutenant and a veteran of ten combat missions when on August 9th, 1945 the United States dropped the world's second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. The allies were still awaiting Japan's response to the demand to surrender and the war continued, when on August 13th, 1945 1st Lt. Perdomo, shot down four Nakajima "Oscar" fighters and one Yokosuka "Willow" Type 93 biplane trainer. While the 507th Fighter Group mission reports confirm his kills as "Oscars", they were actually Ki-84 "Franks" from the 22nd and 85th Hiko-Sentais. The combat took place near Keijo / Seoul, Korea when 38 Thunderbolts of the 507th Fighter Wing, USAAF, encountered approximately 50 enemy aircraft. It was Perdomo's last combat mission, and the five confirmed victories made him an "Ace in a Day" and thus the distinction of being the last "Ace" of the United States in World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Air Medal with one leaf cluster.

After the war, Perdomo continued to serve in the Army Air Forces. In 1947, he was reassigned to the newly formed United States Air Force and served until January 1950. When Perdomo returned to civilian life, he joined the Air Force Reserve. On June 30th, 1950, Perdomo was recalled to active duty upon the outbreak of the Korean War at the rank of captain. He continued to serve in the Air Force until January 30th, 1958 when he left the military at the rank of major. Perdomo was emotionally affected when his son, SPC4 Kris Mitchell Perdomo, was one of 3 men killed on May 5th, 1970, aboard a U.S. Army helicopter UH-1 Iroquois which crashed and exploded about 5 miles southwest of the city of Phy Vinh in Vĩnh Bình Province, South Vietnam. He had trouble coping with the situation and developed an addiction to alcohol, which took Major Oscar F. Perdomo's life on March 2nd, 1976. He was proclaimed dead upon his arrival at USC Medical Center, Los Angeles. His name is inscribed in the United States Air Force Memorial.

2019 Cultural Diversity in the Arts and Edmonton Artists’ Trust Fund Award Recipients

On Monday, March 9, 2020, the Edmonton Arts Council (EAC) announced the recipients of the 2019 Cultural Diversity in the Arts project grants (CDA) and the 2019 Edmonton Artists’ Trust Fund awards (EATF) at the annual EAC Social.

The festivities brought together over 150 members of Edmonton’s arts community to celebrate and mingle while 2018 CDA recipients Morteza Abedinifard and Mehdi Rezania filled the space with enchanting music from Persia and Iran. EAC Board member Debbie Houle graciously hosted the evening, while Councillor Ben Henderson brought greetings on behalf of the City of Edmonton and announced the 15 recipients of the CDA project grants. This year, Craig Stumpf-Allen of the Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) announced the 10 recipients of the EATF award. The ECF has supported these awards for the last 23 years, and since its inception, the fund has grown to over $1.8 million, offering support to Edmonton’s artistic leaders, changemakers, advocates and visionaries.

Through programs such as the Edmonton Artists’ Trust Fund and Cultural Diversity in the Arts project grant, it is clear to see how artists are essential in helping our city grow and connect. Congratulations to all of the 2019 recipients!

Althea Cunningham’s new one-act play “Sunkiss to Death” tells a deeply personal story of how love transcends through all our realities.

Luciana Erregue-Sacchi is a multilingual poet and author whose project Beyond the Food Court: The Literary Cuisines of Edmonton explores Edmonton’s food culture.

Paul Jonasion Giang is launching a collaborative project with Mile Zero Dance entitled “Free and Easy Wandering” that explores identities and freedoms, with a focus on Asian heritage.

Christian Pérès Gibaut is a visual artist who will explore the notions of identity and memory in a series of new paintings.

Danielle LaRose is creating a new version of Shakespeare’s “Troilus and Cressida” using a diverse group of all-female artists.

Cody Lightning is creating an Indigenous comedy feature film called “Hey Viktor!” to be shot in the Edmonton area.

Zsofia Opra-Szabo is a puppeteer who is creating a stop motion animation short film called “Tango Through Life”.

Shima Aisha Robinson is a spoken word poet whose latest creation, The Bellow Project, is a collaboration of spoken word poetry and improvisational music about testifying the truth of her existence.

Aboud Salman is creating a series of twelve paintings depicting his journey from Syria to Canada.

Amena Shehab is creating a new full-length play entitled “After the Trojan Women” about the oppression of women and those who fled Syria nearly 3000 years ago.

Frankie Fingerling and Narcissa Nightingale are producing a showcase of queer racialized artists reclaiming performance art as a source of empowerment, solidarity and representation.

Jeong Ung Song is staging the play “Among the Dead” at the 2020 Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festival.

Recipients of the 2019 Edmonton Artists’ Trust Fund Award:

Hunter Cardinal is an award-winning playwright, actor, and Indigenous myth architect. He is also one of the founders of Naheyawin, an Indigenous consultancy that helps organizations discover and implement Indigenous-based solutions for improvements in diversity and inclusion. 

Bevin Dooley is a playwright, dramaturg and writing instructor. As an arts administrator, Bevin is also the Artistic Associate & Edmonton Liaison for the Alberta Playwrights' Network.

Rayanne Haines is a poet and writer with works published in Canada, the USA and the UK. Rayanne also co-hosts a poetry podcast, "Let's Get Lit" and is a former Executive Director of the Edmonton Poetry Festival.

Alan Henderson is a sculptor born and raised in Alberta, now living in St. Albert. He has taught at the University of Alberta and has several public art works that can be found around the province.

Jonathan Kawchuk is a composer and sound artist who draws inspiration from the environment and conservation. He has created scores for feature films and documentaries, as well as albums of his own work.

aAron Munson is a cinematographer, filmmaker, and multimedia artist whose projects tackle the extremes of human experience and delve into our deepest vulnerabilities.

Scott Portingale is a mixed-media, time-lapse, and stop-motion artist working with themes rooted in the natural world, scientific pursuit, and the human experience. 

Titilope Sonuga is an award-winning poet, writer, and performer with roots in Edmonton and Lagos, Nigeria. Titilope is also the founder of Edmonton's BIP collective, a performance and mentorship platform for young poets in the city.

Carla Taylor is a painter, art educator, muralist, illustrator, and community builder with both Dene and Irish/French heritage. Her artistic practice is often inspired by nature and dreams, and she strongly believes in the healing power of art.

Billie Zizi is a musician and recording artist active with the Tree Frog Artist Collective. Her music channels an avant-jazz vibe and reflects her nomadic tendencies, never settling for artistic repetition.

After Shu was destroyed by the Orochi Army, Huang Zhong and Guan Ping found themselves defending Jing Province. Nobunaga comes into the battlefield, saving Guan Ping from certain death…

Meng Da will be with the Huang Zhong Army in the outer section of Xiangyang Castle. Yoshitsugu Ōtani appears in place of Guo Jia and Jia Xu appears in place of Xun Yu in this battle. Diamondback appears in place of Coachwhip in the eastern garrison to ambush Guan Ping. Coachwhip will instead appear near the northwest of the battlefield next to Yoshitsugu.

In the aftermath, Guan Ping and Huang Zhong will join Nobunaga. Huang Zhong tells Nobunaga that he resembles Cao Cao. Nobunaga is interested in finding him and then asks Huang Zhong to lead him to Honnōji, where he is said to be…

Chapter 2: Battle of Honnōji 本能寺の戦い

It was reported that in his initial fight against Orochi, Cao Cao had died at Yiling. However, Nobunaga decided to head to Honnōji, where Cao Cao was rumoured to be living in seclusion. By the time Nobunaga arrived, Honnōji was surrounded by Orochi’s forces.

Toshiie Maeda will appear in place of Kazumasu Takigawa from the Z version of this battle and will be tasked by Nobunaga to extinguish the flames around Honnōji. Li Dian will be replaced by a generic officer when Xiahou Dun arrives. Lianshi will appear in place of Chen Lan and Lei Bo will be replaced by a Wu generic officer.

Xiahou Dun will arrive, outraged that his lord is not there while the “pretender” Nobunaga is. Shingen Takeda will follow, expecting to find Nobunaga, but he finds that Nobunaga is occupied with the Orochi Army.

In the aftermath of the battle, Xiahou Dun tells Nobunaga that he is not fit to replace Cao Cao. Nobunaga tells him that he is wasting his time searching for the dead. Sun Shangxiang is brought to Nobunaga, having been captured in the battle. Nobunaga asks if the kingdom of Wu has any spirit left in them, then has the prisoners released.

Chapter 3: Battle of Kyūshū 九州の戦い

Nobunaga identified some independent forces in Kyūshū as potential reinforcements for his own army.

Kanbei Kuroda and Sadakatsu Murai swap places at the start of the battle.

Kanetsugu Naoe will arrive to assist the Oda, under orders from Kenshin Uesugi. He will see that Sakon’s forces aren’t working together to see the big picture while Nobunaga is more concerned with strengthening his power.

In the aftermath, Nobunaga grants Sakon an opportunity to demonstrate his strategy and allows Zhang Jiao, Okuni and Xiaoqiao to join his army. After an officer suggests that they should join forces with Kenshin Uesugi and Shingen Takeda, Nobunaga declines.

Chapter 4: Battle of Tong Gate 潼関の戦い

Coalition Army and Sakon Shima Troop vs. Orochi Army Allied characters: Nobunaga Oda, Katsuie Shibata Third-party characters: Sakon Shima Enemy characters: Dong Zhuo, Zhang Liao, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Guan Xing, Guan Suo, Hisahide Matsunaga, Munenori Yagyū, Kotarō Fūma

The kingdom of Wu had its leader Sun Jian captured and their forces forced to serve in the Orochi Army. Nobunaga decided to send Sakon Shima to aid Sun Ce, who was leading Wu in his father’s absence. Sakon was aware of the secrets of many armies, including the whereabouts of where Sun Jian was held. Nobunaga believed that if Sun Ce had that information, he would defect from the Orochi Army. However, the Orochi Army arrived to attack Nobunaga at that very moment, making Sakon’s journey extremely problematic…

Katsuie Shibata appears as an additional officer for the Oda Army. Guan Xing and Guan Suo will appear as additional officers along the Yellow River. Hisahide Matsunaga and Munenori Yagyū will also appear in the southeast.

Guide Sakon to the escape point and defeat Dong Zhuo to win the battle. Sakon will farewell Nobunaga to join forces with Sun Ce.

Chapter 5: Battle of Guandu 官渡の戦い

Coalition Army and Ling Tong Troop vs. Orochi Army Allied characters: Nobunaga Oda, Zhang Jiao, Mitsuhide Akechi, Nagahide Niwa Third-party characters: Ling Tong Enemy characters: Da Ji, Daqiao, Diaochan, Lu Lingqi

Shingen Takeda and Kenshin Uesugi overcame their differences to form a military alliance. Believing that this had only served to gather the enemy soldiers for easier disposal, Orochi gleefully sent his main forces in to wage war with them at Nagashino. Though Shingen and Kenshin were brave and cunning leaders, they were outnumbered by Orochi’s army. When Nobunaga heard what was happening, he sent his army to attack Guandu rather than send reinforcements to Nagashino.

Lu Lingqi will appear in place of Nobushige Oyamada in this battle. Ling Tong will arrive in the east to assist in this battle.

In the aftermath, Huang Zhong will report that Shingen and Kenshin have been defeated at Nagashino. However, Nobunaga foresaw that and reveals that if he went to Nagashino, the enemy would have overrun Guandu instead.

Chapter 6: Battle of Fan Castle 樊城の戦い

Coalition Army vs. Orochi Army Allied characters: Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Ling Tong, Kanbei Kuroda Enemy characters: Cao Pi, Zhang He, Sun Quan, Zhou Tai, Ding Feng, Lianshi, Li Dian, Yue Jin, Xiahou Dun

After the Orochi Army were victorious at Nagashino, Orochi had his forces head to Guandu, only to find it taken by Nobunaga. This greatly lowered the Orochi Army’s morale since they were already fatigued from the long journey. Wanting to take advantage of this situation, Nobunaga lay in wait at Fan Castle…

Kanbei Kuroda will appear in place of Ittetsu Inaba and Nagayoshi Mori will appear in place of Toshiie Maeda like in the Z version of the battle.

Li Dian will appear in place of Yu Jin, Zhou Tai will appear in place of Hideyasu Yūki and Lianshi will appear near Sun Quan as an additional officer. Xiahou Ba will be replaced by a generic officer when Xiahou Dun arrives out of nowhere, intending to defeat the “pretender”, Nobunaga.

Defeat both Cao Pi and Xiahou Dun to win the battle. In the aftermath, Nobunaga advises Xiahou Dun to give Cao Pi a chance as a leader. If he needs to cross swords with a man to determine his worth, then he should do that with Cao Pi.

Chapter 7: Battle of the Wuzhang Plains 五丈原の戦い

Sakon had liased with Sun Ce, while Xiahou Dun had reconciled with Cao Pi. Nobunaga’s plans were beginning to come to fruition. Realising for the first time that Nobunaga was attempting to unite the Resistance forces into a single mighty army (or rather a united front), Orochi ordered Da Ji to have Nobunaga killed. Da Ji set forth to meet Nobunaga at the Wuzhang Plains…

Toshiie Maeda will appear in place of Ujisato Gamō from the Z version of this battle and Katsuie Shibata will appear in place of Ittetsu Inaba, who in turn appears in the northwestern garrison where Nagayoshi Mori would be.

Munenori Yagyū will appear in place of Mitsuyasu Shimura in this battle. Hisahide Matsunaga will appear in place of Zhong Hui when Da Ji sends out reinforcements near her main camp.

Later in the battle, Kenshin Uesugi and Shingen Takeda will arrive as reinforcements, having survived the Orochi Army’s attack at Nagashino. Kagekatsu Uesugi will appear in place of Kageie Kakizaki.

In the aftermath, Kenshin and Shingen join Nobunaga’s quest to defeat Orochi and Nobunaga prepares his forces for a final showdown.

Hisahide Matsunaga and Munenori Yagyū will appear as additional officers in the south of the battlefield. When reinforcements from Wu and Wei arrive later, they are known as the 同盟軍 in Japanese or the Wu Army in English. In this version of the game, they are known as the Resistance Army 反乱軍. Also, the reinforcements are made up of generic officers.

When Lu Bu is defeated, Orochi will open the gates of Koshi Castle. Defeat Orochi to win the battle.

    In fact, it seems that when Rikyū found that something produced an especially pleasing effect, he often reused at least the same set of utensils.  Some, however, have suggested that this was done when Rikyū had a certain utensil that he wanted to sell, and so continued to reuse it until one of the guests expressed an interest in purchasing it (though this does not really explain why the entire set of utensils was reused -- since at least some of the pieces remained a part of Rikyū's collection up until the time of his death).

    The sections that Kumakura leaves out are generally found to contain details that conflict with modern-day Urasenke teachings (for example, opening the ro at the beginning of the Ninth Lunar Month -- which was early October in the Gregorian calendar, in this case) -- even, as here, simply because the same tori-awase is repeated (when that school prefers that everything be different every time a kama is boiled and guests are received).

†He follows the description of the gathering that Rikyū hosted on the seventh of the Seventh Month with the concluding remarks from Book Two as if none of the other kaiki ever existed.

    In general, the omissions scattered throughout his version of the work follow this same pattern -- in other words, Kumakura sensei presents his material as if it constituted the entirety of Jitsuzan’s text.

²Nijō shiki [二疊敷].

    This was the two-mat room in Rikyū's official residence.

³Kimura Hitachi [木村常陸].

    This refers to Kimura Shigekore [木村重茲; ? ~ 1595), who held the post of Hitachi-no-suke [常陸介]*.  He was also protector of Toyotomi Hidetsugu (whom Hideyoshi adopted as his heir apparent after the death of his first son Tsuru-matsu [鶴松] in the early autumn of 1591).

    Shigekore also shared in the unfortunate fate of Hidetsugu, when he was eliminated (after being charged with, perhaps fictitious, treason), following the birth of a new son to Hideyoshi, Hideyori.

    One of Rikyū’s densho was addressed to Kimura Hitachi-no-suke Shigekore, though the contents suggest that Shigekore’s interest in chanoyu was more a result of it being the fashion of the day among Hideyoshi’s courtiers, than because he espoused a sincere desire to master the details of the practice†.

    Kimura Shigekore appears at one of the chakai that are described in the Rikyū Hyakkai Ki [利休百會記], and on that occasion he was accompanied by the same two fellow guests as here, which suggests that they were his associates. __________ *Hitachi-no-suke [常陸介] is usually translated Deputy Governor of Hitachi Province, in eastern Honshu.  The governor of Hitachi was traditionally an Imperial Prince (his governorship was a sinecure, while the Deputy Governor was actually in charge of the province).

†It appears, from Rikyū’s uncharacteristically wordy response in this document (suggestive of his ire and/or fear at even having been a party to such a request), that Shigekore had specifically asked for secret instruction in the gokushin temae (which Hideyoshi had forbidden Rikyū to disseminate in 1586, suggesting that the densho possibly postdates that decree) -- though whether Shigekore had intended to use this temae as a tool to flatter (or aggrandize) his way into Hideyoshi’s favor, or to encourage improper (and potentially treasonous) aspirations on Hidetsugu’s part, cannot be known.  Rikyū, however, replied to his queries with a densho that basically confined itself to an enumeration of the basic teachings of wabi-no-chanoyu – while pointedly stating that Shigekore had no need for the information that he had requested; and, furthermore, urging him to limit his studies to practices that were better in keeping with his status and circumstances.

⁴Tadasaburō dono [忠三郎殿]*.

   This refers to the daimyō-nobleman Terazawa Hirotaka [寺澤廣髙; 1463 ~ 1633], who served as Governor of the province of Shima (Shima-no-kuni [志摩國]), Shima-no-kami [志摩守].  He held the junior grade of the Fourth Rank.

   At the battle of Sekigahara (in 1600) he fought for the Eastern Army (Tōgun [東軍]), and subsequently served the first three shōgun of the Tokugawa family -- Ieyasu, Hidetada, and Iemitsu.

   Terazawa Hirotaka's fiscal policy, which relied on over-taxation, created a precedent that eventually precipitated the Shimabara Rebellion (Shimabara-no-ran [島原の乱]) -- which broke out several years after his death.

    At the chakai described in the Rikyū Hyakkai Ki, which was held on the 24th of the Twelfth Month of Tenshō 18 (the chakai took place early in 1591), Terazawa Hirotaka was listed as the third guest. __________ *Rikyū has made a mistake recording this man's name.  It should have been entered as Tadajirō dono [忠次郎殿].

⁵Tōgorō dono [藤五郎殿].

    This was Hashiba Tōgorō [羽柴藤五郎], who is better known as Hasegawa Hidekazu [長谷川秀一; ? ~ 1594], a daimyō-nobleman, who also served as an Imperial Chamberlain (jijū [侍従]) -- in which capacity he was known as Hashiba Tōgō jijū [羽柴東郷侍従]*.  He held the junior grade of the Fourth Rank.

    Hasegawa Hidekazu died (from disease) in 1594, during the conquest of Korea.

    At the chakai that Rikyu hosted for these three men early in 1591, Hashiba Tōgorō is given as the second guest. __________ *The sobriquet comes from his post of Echizen Tōgō-jōshu [越前東郷城主] (Tōgō Castle), lord of the Tōgō castle in the province of Echizen.

⁶Sho [初].

    The word sho [初], referring to the shoza, is not found in the kaiki of this gathering -- though it is implied by the description of the utensils.

    As for the kane-wari:

- the toko held the kakemono, and so was han [半];

- the room had the kama and furo, resting on an ō-ita, and so was likewise han [半];

- and the tana had the kōgō and habōki, each of them contacting a different kane, and so was chō [調].

    Han + han + chō is chō, which is appropriate for the shoza of a gathering being held during the daytime.

⁷Tōyo [東與].

    This refers to the bokuseki written by the Yuan period monk Dōnglíng Yǒng-yú [東陵永璵; 1285 ~ 1365]* (whose name was pronounced Tōryō Eiyo in Japanese).  Rikyū used the first and (a mistaken form of) the last kanji of this monk’s name as his nickname for this scroll.

    Dōnglíng Yǒng-yú was a follower of the Sōtō sect [曹洞宗]†, and came to Japan in Shōhei 6 [正平六年] (1351) to spread the teachings of this version of Chán among the Japanese. ___________ *When writing this abbreviated version of his name, Rikyū seems to have mistaken the second kanji -- writing yo [與] (the kanji that formed the first syllable of his own childhood name, Yoshirō [與四郎]), rather than yo [璵].

†One of the two main schools of Zen.  The other, of course, being the Rinzai School.

    Though it is an over-simplification, the Sōtō approach tends to favor a more gradual attainment of realization through the cultivation of samadhi -- in contrast to the desire for a “sudden enlightenment” experience that is usually understood to be the goal of the followers of the Rinzai tradition.

⁸Unryū [雲龍].

    The second small unryū-gama [小雲龍釜], with an iron lid and matsu-gasa kan-tsuki, as seen below.

    On this occasion, Rikyū seems to have arranged the kama in the small ceramic furo which he described previously* as a yuen-buro [油煙 風爐] -- yuen [油煙] means soot†.  Here, the expression yuen-buro means a do-buro [土風爐] (clay furo).  Other early (and better-known) names for this type of furo were the Nara-buro [奈良風爐]‡ and the abura-buro [油風爐]** -- the latter being of a similar derivation to Rikyū's term.

    The specific furo in question is the one known today as the unryū-buro -- because it was made to be used with Rikyū's small unryū-gama††.  This furo is shown above.

    That Rikyū used this furo is implied, rather than stated‡‡. __________ *In the kaiki of the last day of the Third Month of the current year (1587).

†Specifically the soot that comes from burning an oil lamp (hence, oily soot). In the early days the low-fired clay furo were rubbed with this kind of soot -- primarily as a way to make them water-proof (lacquer was not used because the lacquer slowly burns away, while the oily soot remains more or less permanently).  By Rikyū’s day, however, it seems that lacquer was being used; and, indeed, the furo was usually lacquered so that it developed a highly polished surface (which some likened to that of a mirror).

‡Because they were originally made by the potters who produced low-fired earthenware vessels for (one-time) ritual use at the Kasuka Shrine [春日社] and the Shōfuku-ji [興福寺] in Nara.  Because of the single intended use, the earthenware was fired so low that, after soaking the piece in water for any length of time, it will fall apart (thus solving the problem of getting rid of potentially hundreds of these pieces every day during the seasonal festivals).

**Since the original intention was to waterproof the clay, rather than color it, lamp-black (and later, oily lacquer) was applied with a cloth, rub the agent into the low-fired clay.  Depending on the kind and quality of lacquer used, the result often looked as if the piece had simply been coated with oily lamp-black.

   By Rikyū's day, these furo were being fired at a higher temperature, and properly lacquered -- often (according to contemporary reports) with kagami-nuri [鏡塗], the highly polished black lacquer that is as reflective as a mirror.  Kagami-nuri uses a lacquer with a higher oil content than that ordinarily used, and perhaps the original intention was for waterproofing, with the highly-polished finish to which this lacquer dries being of secondary importance.

††The incurving rim and root-like legs of this furo recall the rounded shoulder and legs of the original old Temmyō kimen-buro for which Rikyū had designed the first small unryū-gama.

‡‡The ita is mentioned at the end of the kaiki; and since the furo is not described, this suggests that it was ceramic (since the word furo was generally used by chajin of the sixteenth century only when referring to one that was made of metal).

⁹Tana ni kōgō ・ habōki [棚ニ 香合 ・ 羽帚].

    The kōgō was probably Rikyū's ruri-suzume [瑠璃雀] -- his “ordinary” kōgō -- arranged on the tsuri-dana together with a go-sun-hane [五寸羽].

    As usual, it is not possible to say what kind of feathers might have been used for this habōki.  From the context, all we can be sure of is that it was a go-sun-hane; and that the feathers would have been wider on the right side of the rachis, since this is the furo-season.

¹⁰Shiru saku-saku [汁 サク〰].

    This was miso-shiru.

    The word or expression saku-saku [さくさく] is an onomatopoeia (for the sound of something crunching in the mouth while it is being eaten), and means something like crisp or crunchy.  Here it refers to the immature leaves of various plants of the mustard family (daikon [大根], hakusai [白菜], kabura [蕪], and na [菜]) that were commonly grown in the kitchen garden.  The leaves were coarsely chopped, and added to the soup just before it was served, so that the greens remained fresh and crisp.

¹¹Hibari noppei [雲雀ノツヘイ].

    Hibari noppei [雲雀のっぺい] seems to be a sort of nimono, where the flesh of the skylark (probably pounded into a paste, bones and all, and then formed into dango [團子] -- meatballs*), is boiled together with pieces of daikon, carrot, lotus root, shiitake, and so on -- with the soup then thickened by the addition of kuzu-ko [葛粉] (powdered kuzu root)† shortly before it will be served.

    This is the first known appearance of the word, and it is not certain precisely how Rikyū prepared this dish, since he has left us no details‡.  All of the versions for which recipes are available (and these are quiet variable in terms of just about every aspect of the thing**) were concocted in the Edo period, and appear to have little in common with Rikyū’s dish, except for the name. ___________ *Tanaka Senshō, however, suggests that “skylark” (hibari [雲雀]) was not actually included in the dish -- because “unlike quail, [he] has never heard that [creatures] like the skylark are delicious birds” (uzura ha shoku-suru ga, hibari nado wa bi-mi no tori to ha kikazu [鶉は食するが、雲雀抔は美味の鳥とは聞かず].  Instead, he argues that Rikyū used the word hibari to indicate a lofty (i.e., wondrously delicious) or otherwise unparalleled dish; and that (perhaps) a special kind of freshly made tōfu formed the centerpiece of the dish, which also included pieces of daikon and carrot.  (It is proverbial in Japan that the skylark flies higher than any other bird:  hence a dish so described would be far better than anything else to which it could be compared.)

     Apparently he forgot that Rikyū had previously served hibari senba-iri [雲雀船場煎り] -- skylark roasted on a spit over a wooden fire, while being basted with a mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil, sake, mirin, and crushed garlic -- and, in that case, the word skylark could hardly be metaphorical, since senba-iri (which featured various small wild birds) was a cheap snack that came into being at the food stalls that lined the wharf at Sakai.

†The kuzu-ko will also add a subtle, honey-like sweetness to the broth, as well as thicken it.

‡The word noppei [のっぺい] seems to mean something like “slimy” (akin to superi / supei [滑]), from the consistency of the soup after the kuzu-ko has been added.  Apparently the adjective did not have any disgusting connotations to Rikyū (as it would probably have to us).

**The range of possibilities is surprising -- from soba and udon (noodles), to abura-ge (fried tōfu), to things like salmon eggs and fish.

¹²Namasu [ナマス].

    This is a sort of raw salad made from julienned daikon and carrot, dressed with rice vinegar that has been flavored (and diluted) with sake, mirin, and a little soy sauce.

¹³Ae-mono [アヘモノ].

    This is another salad-like offering, although one with a generally stronger flavor.  Ae-mono consists of various chopped or sliced vegetables (and firm-fleshed fruits when in season), and sometimes cooked or raw seafood, dressed with a soy- or iri-zake-based sauce.

    While the intense heat that follows the end of the rainy season would have already abated, it was still quite warm, making cold dishes enjoyable.

¹⁴Iri-kaya ・ kuri [イリカヤ ・ クリ].

    These were the kashi.

    Iri-kaya [煎り榧] are the roasted nuts of the Japanese allspice tree (also known, in English, as the Japanese nutmeg-yew, Torreya nucifera); and kuri [栗], which means “chestnuts,” probably referred to yaki-guri [焼き栗], chestnuts roasted until soft over a charcoal fire -- since these chestnuts would have been harvested the year before.

¹⁵Go [後].

    This word is also not found in the Enkaku-ji manuscript of Book Two of the Nampō Roku -- though it is understood from the context, since what follows is a listing of the utensils arranged in the room for the goza.

    With respect to the kane-wari:

- the scroll had been removed, and replaced by the chabana, arranged in a large bronze hanaire resting, on an usu-ita, on the floor of the toko, making it han [半];

- in addition to the ō-ita furo (the furo counted as one unit), the room also contained the mizusashi, with the chaire (placed inside the chawan) in front of it (all of which counted as one unit since all of these things were on the same side of the yū-yo [有余]), and the chashaku placed near the left edge of the ō-ita (and, incidentally, in contact with the central kane, wherefore it is counted as one additional unit), made the room han [半];

- and the habōki was placed on the tana, in contact with the left-most kane*, whereby the tana was also han [半].

    Han + han + han is han, which is proper for the goza of a chakai hosted during the daytime. ___________ *Some have argued that the habōki was placed on a diagonal, in which case it may have touched two kane (though this has no impact on the count).  Irrespective of which orientation was used by Rikyū, the tana was counted as han [半].

¹⁶Kuchi-hiroi hanaire ni hasu shiro [口廣花入ニ 蓮 白].

    This was the large bronze hanaire now known as Kine-no-ore [杵のをれ], which remains in the Tokugawa collection.  This hanaire is shown below.

    The hanaire was placed, on an usu-ita*, in the middle of the floor of the floor of the toko.

    The lotus flower (or possibly flowers) was probably a bud, since this flower tends to fall apart shortly after it opens fully (lotus flowers open at dawn, and by the afternoon, the petals are already falling off).  Furthermore, a full-blown lotus blossom is extremely large, whereas a bud would be much more manageable.

    The way the kaiki is written, the color (white) seems to have been added as an afterthought.  (The most common color of lotus is pink.)

    One or two leaves (probably not fully open, since they, too, are extremely large when fully expanded) were surely included in the chabana. __________ *The usu-ita was of the type known as the yahazu-ita [矢筈板] today; it has a notched edge, with the part above the notch slightly larger than the part below.  Rikyū’s usu-ita, which was created by Jōō, measured 1-shaku 3-sun 2-bu by 9-sun 2-bu.

    Unlike the present, Jōō and Rikyū used the same usu-ita regardless of the size or material from which the hanaire was made:  there were no ideas of “shin-gyō-sō” of either flowers or hanaire in their period.  These were all Edo period corruptions of the original teachings, as were the various types of usu-ita.

¹⁷Chaire kuro [茶入 黒].

    This was a hiki-dashi-kuro [引き出し黒] chaire that had been made for Rikyū by Furuta Sōshitsu.

¹⁸Soto-no-hama no uchi ni iri [外浜ノ内ニ入].

    The Soto-ga-hama ido [外ヶ浜井戸] was Rikyū's personal ido-chawan.

    It had been found at the site of a shipwreck at Soto-ga-hama, on the northern tip of Honshū.  This chawan is not perfectly round, but is slightly oblong (measuring 4-sun 9-bu from front to back, and 4-sun 5-bu from side to side:  the narrow end, which is the place from which the tea was drunk, was used as the front by Rikyū*.)

    The chaire, tied inside its shifuku, was displayed inside the chawan (the chashaku, meanwhile, was placed on the left side of the ō-ita, parallel to its edge, as described later in the entry).

    Tanaka Senshō seems to argue that the chawan (with the chaire inside it) should have been placed on the tsuri-dana† -- even though in Rikyū’s own writings‡, he indicates that the chawan should not usually be displayed in this way (on account of the danger):  in general, Rikyū seems to say that only things like the hishaku and take-wa should routinely be placed on the tana**. ___________ *Again and again in his densho, Rikyū insists that the guest must never turn the chawan before drinking, even if only by a little.  The front, according to Rikyū, is the side of the bowl from which it is most comfortable to drink, and the bowl must remain in this orientation until it returns to the host’s hands.  When the guest returns the chawan to the host after drinking, it should be placed down on the mat oriented exactly as the host offered it -- with the front (the side from which it is easiest to drink) facing toward the guest.  Only the host has the right to change the orientation of the chawan.

†His implication is that Rikyū (or perhaps Jitsuzan) has made a mistake.

‡To which Tanaka, working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (his studies on the Nampō Roku seem to have been first made public around 1940) would not have had access -- Suzuki Keiichi’s Sen no Rikyū Zenshu was published in 1941, and prior to that date most of the documents that Suzuki discusses were kept away from public scrutiny (and largely remained unknown to the scholarly community except in largely discredited modified versions that had circulated during the Edo period).

**Rikyū voices a similar argument regarding the naka-dana of the fukuro-dana, and this should probably be taken as the precedent -- since the tsuri-dana was ultimately derived from the naka-dana of the fukuro-dana.

¹⁹Habōki [羽帚].

    Though Rikyū only names it, without mentioning where it was displayed, the habōki was placed by itself on the tsuri-dana, in contact with the kane (so that the tana would be counted as han [半]).

²⁰Mizusashi Shigaraki [水指 シカラキ].

    This was Rikyū's Shigaraki mizusashi.

    Rikyū had a collection of tea utensils, to be sure, and he frequently modified his tori-awase.  But the remarkable thing -- when viewed from the perspective of modern-day chanoyu -- is how few in number these pieces really were, and how frequently he “reuses” them.

²¹Ue ni chasen ・ chakin [上ニ茶筅 ・ 茶巾].

    The chakin, with the chasen resting on top of it, was placed on the lid of the mizusashi. 

    This arrangement (with the chawan placed inside the chawan, resting on the mat in front of the mizusashi, while the chakin and chasen are placed one on top of the other on its lid) is called chasen-kazari [茶筅飾].  The temae is still taught by the modern schools -- though most impose elaborate reasons and restrictions on the use of this arrangement (none of which seem to apply to the present gathering), and thus it is rarely seen in chakai given today.

²²Ō-ita no hashi ni ori-tame ari [大板ノ端ニ折タメアリ].

    The chashaku, one of Rikyū’s home-made ori-tame [折撓], rather than resting on the (left) rim of the chawan, on the left side of the chaire, was placed on the ō-ita, as shown in the sketch (below).

    Probably this was done because Rikyū did not want to leave the ō-ita empty (and also for the sake of kane-wari, as explained above in footnote 15).

◎ When an ō-ita is used as a base for the furo*, during the temae the chashaku is placed on the ita, rather than rested on the chaire.  The chakin is also placed on the ita (rather than on the lid of the mizusashi); and also the lid of the chaire (when transferring tea into the chawan).  These are conventions that have been associated with the ō-ita since the time of Jōō (who established all of these precedents).

    In addition to the above utensils, Rikyū would have used a take-wa and mentsū -- both of which (along with the hishaku) would have been brought out from the katte at the beginning of the temae.

__________ *An ō-ita can be used only with a small furo.  This is the purpose for which Jōō created this variety of shiki-ita.

    Note that the correct size of the ō-ita is 1-shaku 3-sun square, since this was derived from “the seat of the furo” on the ji-ita of the small shin-daisu (the ji-ita measures 2-shaku 7-sun 5-bu by 1-shaku 3-sun; and the seat occupied by the furo measures 1-shaku 3-sun by 1-shaku 3-sun).

    Ō-ita measuring 1-shaku 4-sun square are a modern creation, and have nothing to do with the chanoyu of the time of Jōō and Rikyū.

START IN STYLE: TOKYO

Tokyo is a city that never stands still; a sprawling mishmash of neighbourhoods each with their own distinct identity. Before embarking on your Shinkansen adventure, pause at the Toyko Station Hotel, a gorgeous red-hued building that dates back to 1915. Start your stay as the locals do, with a jog to the Imperial Palace. Then spend a day or two exploring the city: the shopping district of Ginza, the grand Gyoko-dori street, the Godzilla statue in Tokyo’s Hibiya, and the many restaurants of Tokyo Station are all on your doorstep.

To get a feel for Tokyo’s many sides, go twin-centre and book a night or two at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo. Located in the hip Meguro district, from here you can seek out trendy shops and craft cafes. And, if you’re visiting in the spring, don’t miss the annual cherry-blossom festival as these iconic trees drop their confetti-like petals.

WHERE TO STAY

At times, Tokyo can feel a little overwhelming, so we highly recommend choosing hotels in a great location, but with a sense of space and calm. Tokyo Station Hotel puts the capital’s highlights at your feet, while Hotel Gajoen Tokyo feels like a city-centre retreat: tranquil, elegant, yet moments from the trend-setting Meguro district. Suggested stay 3-5 days.

ALL ABOARD THE SHINKANSEN

Catching the Shinkansen is an effortless experience. Trains leave from both Tokyo station and Shinagawa station with surprising regularity – and typical Japanese efficiency. The average delay is just 36 seconds. And shortly after boarding you’re off: rocketing along at up to 320 kilometres per hour. Order some refreshments and take in the views as you whiz past Mount Fuji.

If time is tight, you could make the full journey to Kobe in two hours, 40 minutes. But we’d highly recommend making some detours along the way, starting with the spellbinding Izu.

THE NATURAL WONDERS OF IZU

Rugged coastline, mellow surfer beaches, dense forests dotted with traditional ryokan dwellings and onsen with their therapeutic hot waters. It’s hard to believe that the cool, green calm of Izu is under an hour away on the bullet train from the non-stop bustle of Tokyo. Known as the ‘province where the hot water gushes’, Izu is overflowing with natural wonders – take in views of Mount Fuji from the top of a volcanic crater, or wander through pink tunnels of Kawazu cherry blossom.

In perfect harmony with its unspoilt natural surroundings, ABBA Resorts Izu is a serene Japanese-inn style forest dwelling, where you’ll soon drift away into a state of Zen-like bliss in the mineral water bubbling up from the Ukiyama Hot Springs. Suggested stay 1-2 nights.

Take the Izuhakone Railway Sunzu line from Shuzenji Station to Mishima, then take the bullet train to Nagoya.

NAGOYA: THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Nagoya’s location means you don’t have to travel far to experience awe-inspiring natural beauty. Head to the picturesque Japanese Alps for hiking and panoramic mountain views. Or stay in the city and visit the Shirotori Garden, full of flora and fauna all year round. Known for its special Hatcho miso, Nagoya is the perfect place to sample some of Japan’s most authentic flavours, from a hearty bowl of misonikomi to the tender meat of doteni.

Take the Kintetsu Express train from Kintetsu Nagoya to Kashikojima – a complimentary shuttle bus is available from Kashikohima to Shima Kanko Hotel: the Bay Suites in Ise-Shima.

A PLACE OF PILGRIMAGE: ISE-SHIMA

Princes, poets and pilgrims have long turned to Ise-Shima for spiritual, cultural (and culinary) inspiration. This ocean peninsula is where haiku-pioneer Matsuo Bashõ was born and where the Imperial Family is said to source their seafood. A stay in Ise-Shima demands a pilgrimage to Ise-jingū. This sacred Shintō shrine complex is the size of a small city – a labyrinth of inner sanctums, outer temples and moss-carpeted courtyards in a serene forest setting. The original shrines date from the 3rd century, but the ones you’ll see are newer – tradition dictates the shrines are recreated every 20 years to specific plans and ancient practices.

Breathe in the postcard-worthy peacefulness of Ise-Shima National Park from the comfort of Shima Kanko Hotel: the Bay Suites, an all-suite Japanese retreat on the shores of Ago-Wan Bay. Enjoy the perfect pairing of sunsets with your seafood at Michelin-starred La Mer, or get a taste of everything on the intricately prepared tasting menu at Hamayu, the hotel’s second restaurant. Take the Kintetsu Express train from Kashikojima to Yamatosaidaiji, transfer to the Kintetsu Nara Line to Kintetsunara (2h30m journey) – note that the Japanese Rail Pass is not valid on Kintetsu trains.

HISTORIC NARA

Next up is the first capital city of Japan, home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wander through the serene Isui-en Garden, be inspired by the world-famous Todai-ji Temple, lose yourself in the pathways that surround the Kasuga-Taisha Shrine. Along the way, you’ll encounter the sacred deer that roam free across the city. To really soak up the atmosphere of Nara, we recommend staying overnight at Noboriojo Hotel Nara. This boutique hotel is right at the foot of the Kofuku-Ji temple and renowned for its exceptional service and French-influenced fine dining. Suggested stay 1-2 nights.

Miyakoji rapid trains operate every 30 minutes between JR Nara Station and Kyoto Station – the journey takes around 45 minutes. Kintetsu Nara and JR Nara Line also connect to Kyoto.

KYOTO: TEMPLES, TEA, AND PLUM TREES

With more than 1,000 temples and countless tea houses, Kyoto is the heart and soul of ancient Japan. And, while the best way to experience the city is to step out and lose yourself in it, there are some sights every traveller should see. Fushimi-Inari Taisha is an awe-inspiring shrine made up of hundreds of vermillion gates that form a tunnel up the mountainside. And, in the evening, the softly-lit Geisha district of Gion has an enchanting, secretive atmosphere. Make time for hanami, the ancient practice of flower-viewing, before sipping on sweet umami-plum tea fresh from the city’s groves, which come into full bloom every spring for the annual plum and cherry blossom festivals.

A restored ryokan with suites discreetly arranged among green courtyards, Sowaka perfectly complements this historic city. Harmoniously designed, traditional ryokan elements such as paper sliding doors are interwoven with modern comforts. Bath amenities are made with Japanese camelia oil, and the hotel’s water is drawn from its own underground spring. It’s all designed to create that Kyoto-state-of-mind. Either take the Special Rapid train on the JR Kyoto Line which will get you to Sannomiya Station in Kobe in 50 minutes, or the high speed shinkansen to Shin-Kobe Station which only takes half an hour.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: KOBE

Home to the highly prized Kobe beef, your final destination is an ancient maritime gateway with the verdant Rokko mountains as a backdrop and the sea stretching beyond the bustling port. Climb the Port Tower for great views of the city and then visit the numerous shops and restaurants along the waterfront, or Take a stroll along Harborland and Meriken Park. Compact and picturesque, most things can be reached on foot from your luxury hotel, Hotel La Suite Kobe Harborland.
