Back to posting about Jess Mariano and Almost Famous again, and how obsessed he was with that movie, but there's this line of dialogue in the film:

"The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you're uncool."

And all I could think of was Jess saying, "I could [sic] care less about being cool," in that car with Rory in Teach Me Tonight and that whole conversation, and how real it was- how real THEY were able to be with each other in that moment. And just... How invaluable that is: that they feel free to be "uncool" with each other. Ironically, I feel like they lost that a bit for a while in the middle there, during the time when they were actually dating, but it's something that's remained a hallmark of their relationship into adulthood, and it's so SO special. 🥺

ok the scene with Elayne, Aviendha, and Birgitte escaping the farm and nuking the Seanchan is EXACTLY what I've been missing from them since the last book. Being stuck in Ebou Dar with one goal that everyone knew they couldn't complete until the end of the book was severely affecting how capable they all appeared to be. So it's nice to see Elayne back on her bullshit, pulling complex magical moves through sheer grit and determination. Plus a bit of homoerotic tension thrown in for good measure. Truly thriving.

i think some of the more interesting ztd fragments are jnes where someone is missing. suspicion - junpei of all people is missing in the pantry. surely nothing went that bad, right? mind the totally fake arms and legs. there's nothing wrong with that. nothing would happen between carlos and akane! look, they're fine having a conversation right now, right? now what's behind that pantry door? and this is where it falls apart - trust falls apart, gives way to emotion. junpei is a part of the puzzle itself

pop off with the pod room - everything is fine, for now, right? never mind that mira isn't here. don't open the pods. surely her method of death wouldn't have anything to do with anything eric knows either. surely not. in one timeline, all of q-team dies there.

transporter with the transporter room and locker room - unlike the others where it's the revelation of a dead body, phi's got barely any body left to begin with. she's reduced to nothing more than a pile of ash - and unlike the others, you get to see it. there's a timeline where she doesn't, timelines where all of d-team survives or just she does, but now all that's left is her broach. a gift from diana. she haunts the rooms in her absence as junpei and mira do, but in a different way - some of these areas even related to her own creation. her own birth. the transporter room pods which are alien and foreign, with pods like cocoons, and the grubby locker room that she and delta are born in.

For anyone who wanted to watch the Tales of Symphonia Festival 20th Anniversary stream from a few weeks ago, but couldn't get the ticket, I decided to record the entire thing and put it up on g drive. It's been split into different sections and is unsubbed. So, here you go! (This may or may not stay up forever, depending).

Starts off with two character skits, then a concert, the main scenario, some free talk with the VAs, more concerts plus a fan showcase, and a final skit that one day I'm going to translate because it was so adorable and sweet.

Some highlights of the main scenario in particular include: sassy Genis and Raine banter, Presea being precious, Regal teasing a flustered Sheena, Lloyd getting a mini heart attack from Colette, Noishe's dog whines in real time (you won't guess who voices him), a trip down memory lane reliving all of the party members' traumas, cute Flanoir and Altamira deluxe suite reenactments, the audience choosing whether Zelos lives or dies, Colette's VA doing a fistpump of victory for her special scene, Sheena and Zelos sharing one brain cell, extra Mithos dialogue, and actual closure?? between Lloyd and Kratos, all written by Symphonia's scenario writer.

Anyone can feel free to translate, or wait until the DVD is up for preorder. But I had a lot of fun watching this, and think other people will too.

I get where people are coming from when they say Diaspro in Winx lost the plot for the sake of being turned into a minor villain and that's all once Valtor enabled her to do what she did in S3, but I feel like that was a reasonable narrative choice. It's only a love potion at that point (while I could go on all day about the ethics of love potions, of course, a later season has her straight up trying to do direct murder). She's a noble, guards will do her dirty work, and I understand that she would feel like getting revenge on Bloom while getting back together with Sky. She was promised a position — romantic AND political — she nearly had and then it was taken from under her by a random fairy who wasn't even "supposed" to be in the running. I don't think what she did was nice, but it makes sense for the story and for her character for her to want to reclaim her position in the way she did. Sky's love was an accessory, in part, to her political ascension, and thus he is again rendered accessory and accomplice by the love spell. And, sending guards after threats seems to be the thing to do in the magical universe if you're a disgruntled noble, so it's probably not unfamiliar for Diaspro to have seen occur before or want to do. It's not a uniquely rotten response any more than Radius' behaviour towards the monster (who, he didn't know it, was Stella). If we fault her for this action rather than only the intention behind it, we need to examine how the worlds in Winx Club deal with threats to their monarchs in general, which sounds interesting but I frankly don't have time for tonight. Diaspro did wrong, but she didn't do uniquely wrong there, and Eraklyon has the punitive security structures in place to have enabled that.

Diaspro's later appearances seem to flatten her motives and the symbolism behind why her relationship with Sky was important and what she does about it (who cares what Diaspro's political aims are and how her status might reflect how she deals with problems, the audience needs to see Bloom thrown into fire I guess), but I feel like seasons 4-8 weren't really that good anyway, so I can't even claim this as a fault of the writers doing Diaspro specifically wrong instead of them just doing the whole show wrong at that point. It might be related, and it might be a coincidence, but a lot of the writing choices seemed to become more flat to me right around when the art shifted to that lifeless godawful Flash simulacrum of S1-3's art.

Also like... idk but if some long-haired hottie wizard in a sick coat and contemplative eyeshadow told me he could help me get my promised chance at both romantic and political success back, I'd at least hear him out, yknow, see what he had to say (<- don't trust me I simp for Valtor)

and this is doubled when it's coming from a 25-year-old currently experiencing a crisis of age because they're soooo old, they're 25, the horror! You are twenty-five. We have an age difference of three years. Your concern over this is embarrassing for you and highly entertaining for me. But like don't kid yourself here. You are 25. You are a like a fucking baby to me.
