[CN] Shaw's 2022 Birthday R&S
⚡ Warning: This post contains detailed spoiler's for r&s which hasn't released in EN yet!⚡
Tumblr media
[Released Date: 16 June 2022]
[This was translated with the help of Google Translate and by my friend!]
Look back at the birthday before he met you. He has always been firm in his goals, and he will always bear in mind the company he has gained.
✧[Chapter 1: Happy Start]✧
In the lounge of Live House, the members of Isolated sat in a circle, listening to several new songs produced by Adam this time.
“Everything looks fine, what else do you want me to say?” Shaw shrugged, looking indifferent.
Adam's voice was inexplicably angry when he spoke again: “You have to play this song when the time comes, shouldn't you say something?”
“I'll just play it, I'm just a bassist, and I don't understand the overall harmony of the no. 1 band.”
“Hey, why did you mention this again?” Jensen, who smelled that the atmosphere was wrong, quickly stood up and started speaking. “Adam is outspoken, and he becomes angry when you don't make things clear, so don't take it to heart. . . ”
“I'm not angry.”
Adam interrupted Jensen unceremoniously, ignoring the hint of the wink, and he even raised his voice by an octave.
“The improvisation he did last time had a problem, he didn't even allow anyone to talk about it?”
Randal, who was sitting in the corner, held his cheeks and looked like he was talking to himself: “Although I was really taken aback by Shaw's improvisation at first, the reaction on the scene was very good, and later I played very intently. ”
“That's because of the atmosphere!” Adam simply stood up and started his machine-like “continuous attack”.
“The sound conditions of the stage that day were general, so many details could not be heard. To put it bluntly, we were lucky.”
“As a result, the organizer asked us to use what we improvise before to perform. This means that any audience with a sharp ear would be able to hear the problem with the composition!”
“Besides, is this what I'm angry about? No, I'm so angry that I talked to him about it, and this kid doesn't care about it at all!”
The messy fluorescent pink hair shook with Adam movements, Jensen sighed, and he knew from the attitude that he had to go up again.
“Okay, stop talking.” He patted Adam's shoulder hard and looked at Shaw, “Shaw, Adam didn't stop you from improvising, just wanted you to think about the overall arrangement before doing so. After all, it's such a big deal.”
“Right, Adam?” Jensen covered Adam's mouth, pressed his head and nodded twice, “He's right. ”
Shaw, who had never spoken, suddenly chuckled and raised his eyebrows “It's really such a big deal. Even if the integrity was a bit lacking, the performance was still interesting, isn’t that enough to make up for it?”
After Shaw finished speaking, he pushed open the door and left without looking back: “If there's nothing else, I'm leaving.”
He had just walked a few steps when Adam reacted after realizing what had happened, kicked the chair next to his feet, and was about to rush out when Fitch grabbed him and held him in place. Jensen chased after him quickly and closed the door behind him: “Shaw, don't forget there's a performance tonight! It's the 100th commemorative performance of Isolated, don't be late!”
Shaw waved his hand and didn't answer.
In the aisle, Shaw's mobile phone beeped.
“Dear member, I wish you a happy birthday! Come to the store today and enjoy a 20% discount on the birthday package of Miaomiao Paradise.”
Looking at the information on the screen, Shaw's mouth curled into a sneer.
This was really a “happy” beginning.
Tumblr media
✧[Chapter 2: Request for Apprenticeship]✧
“Big brother, have you made up your mind? Can you become my master?”
In the skatepark, Shaw, who was pulled by a chubby six-year-old boy, frowned with a headache. He originally just wanted to come here to vent his emotions, and didn't want to encounter another “trouble”.
“I'm not the only one who can do the dolphin flip. Why do you have to pester me every day to become your master?”
“Because you are the most handsome!”
“Although you are very discerning, I don't want to teach people... I may not be able to teach you. You'd better find your friends to play with, I'm busy.”
Just as Shaw was about to leave, Little Fatty grabbed him again: “I, I don't have any friends…”
Shaw was startled until he heard little fatty's stomach “grumbling” several times. He sighed and raised his chin.
“Tsk”
“...Where to go?”
“Skateboard at noon, let's have lunch.”
Inside the fast food restaurant, two figures, big and small, looked up at the menu screen at the same time.
“Big brother, can I really order whatever you want?”
“Were you lied to since young?”
“No, I only grew so big by drinking milk and eating meat every day.”
Little Fatty stared wide-eyed at the screen for a long time, and pointed with his little hand:
“I want this!”
Shaw was stunned and saw the words on it - “Miaomiao Paradise Birthday Package”
“ ... your birthday? ”
“I, I just want the dolls in this package!”
“.......”
When Shaw came to little fatty with a full plate, little fatty's eyes lit up and excitedly picked up the doll on the plate.
“This is the latest “Hercules doll”! My friends love this animation!”
Shaw casually stirred the ice cubes: “Didn't you say you don't have any friends?”
Little Fatty's eyes suddenly dimmed: “I used to have, but after I got fat, they didn't like to play with me.”
“Just because of that?” Shaw snorted disdainfully, “It's fine to leave them alone.”
“But if they were to be alone, wouldn’t it be lonely?”
Shaw pondered for a while, as if thinking of something, he sneered.
“Do you know what loneliness is at a young age? Only an old man can use such a mature word.”
“I know! ” Little Fatty's eyes widened: “Loneliness means that the set of meal can only be eaten by one person, skateboarding can only be played by one person, and no one will accompany you to watch the cartoons.. . . . . ”
The more he spoke, the lower his voice became, his head drooping: “So, in order for them to play with me, I have to practice skateboarding and lose weight successfully! To become...” Little Fatty looked at the “Hercules Doll” on the table, picked it up excitedly: “Become like Hercules!”
Shaw frowned: “You practice skateboarding just to lose weight?”
“Yes, because my friends say that being fat is not good for health, and they want to play with a healthy me.”
Shaw looked at this energetic little fatty with some surprise, and shrugged his shoulders: “Okay, then you can work harder.”
Little Fatty's eyes lit up: “Then big brother, will you promise to be my master?”
“You little brat, you are quite insatiable. ”
Shaw raised his lips and flicked little fatty's forehead: “I refuse. ”
“One yard to one yard, you can cheer for you, don't think about it when you are your master.”
Tumblr media
✧[Chapter 3: The so-called maturity]✧
Shaw went home and changed into a formal suit, and had a rare hairstyle where he had split his bangs apart, and ran directly to Loveland University.
In the afternoon, the school will hold an important academic seminar. All teachers and students of the school will be present at that time. Shaw also has his own task. He stood at the door of Professor Shen's office and knocked on the door twice.
“Please come in”
Professor Shen raised his head from the paper and was surprised when he saw Shaw.
“Yo, it’s a refreshing look!”
As he said, he grabbed Shaw and took a serious look. Compared with his usual jackets full of “nails”, this dress is more student-like.
“You came at the right time. After knowing that you won the “Wenbo Scholarship”, several professors who have a good relationship with me asked me to send you some books, saying that they were very optimistic about you and asked you to continue to work hard.”
Shaw looked in the direction that Professor Shen pointed - two full cardboard boxes were placed in the corner.
“ .....…That much?”
Professor Shen patted him on the back angrily: “Don't be in a blessing and don't know the blessing. You must know that this was the most gold-containing scholarship in archaeology. Now you're being watched by the entire archaeological community in China! Several schools that are ranked in the top rankings have called me. They want to know if you have any intention to continue your studies in the future? ”
The last sentence was a bit of inquiry.
Shaw understood what he meant and smiled: “I have just finished graduating school, and I haven't thought so much about it for the time being. Let's talk about it later. ”
Although he hopes to keep such an outstanding talent in his school, Professor Shen knows that this kid has always had an idea, and this kind of thing can't be forced, so he smiled and waved his hand.
”As long as you have a plan in mind. Be sure to be on time for your speech this afternoon.” Then, he thought of something: “I have arranged the seats for you that you asked me to reserve last time. When will your friends come?”
Shaw's expression froze, and soon he smiled again: “They won't be coming.”
Professor Shen was keenly aware of the strangeness, and said solemnly: “This kind of interaction with people, sometimes it's the same as studying, it's not done overnight. As long as you spend your time pondering and understanding, there's nothing that can't be solved. . . . . . This is also a kind of mature expression of human beings.”
“I understand.”
Professor Shen nodded in relief.
“I understand your logic, but I’m at the age where I would do what people of my age would do. If I were to say that I reached the state that you’ve mentioned, that is an immature appearance.”
After Shaw finished speaking, he grinned and waved to Professor Shen, whose eyes were wide open.
“I just finished writing this speech last night, and I'm not familiar with it. In order not to embarrass you later, I'll go practice it first.”
Tumblr media
✧[Chapter 4: Speech scene]✧
The “National Academic Symposium on Archaeology in Colleges and Universities” was held in the Great Hall of Loveland University.
In front of the podium, there are archaeology professors and academic authorities from various colleges and universities, and the students behind them are all sitting upright, peeking at these industry leaders from time to time.
On the side stage of the podium, Shaw found Professor Shen's figure through the curtain, and at the same time saw the four seats in the row behind him being empty.
Shaw's eyes sank, and a certain emotion flashed across his eyes.
After hesitating for a while, he took out his mobile phone from his pocket and looked at the “Adam” name in the address book.
Just as his thumb was about to move to that name, the classmate in charge of the cue process reminded him in a low voice.
“Schoolmate, it's your turn.”
Shaw frowned slightly and turned off the phone.
“Next, I welcome the winner of this Wenbo Scholarship, and the only graduate student representative, Shaw, to deliver a speech.”
The host's voice fell, and amidst the warm applause, Shaw walked to the podium.
He took a steady step, and the corners of his mouth raised a calm arc.
Shaw had no interest in this scholarship, which represented the highest honor for students in the Department of Archaeology, until Professor Shen called him to the office again and handed him another application form.
“Professor, I said I'm not interested in this matter.”
“I remember you said before that it was boring to take theory classes every day, and you wanted to participate in field practice?” Seeing that Shaw's unconcerned expression loosened, Professor Shen smiled again. He continued, “The application criteria for this scholarship include the field practice direction. You must know that ordinary students cannot participate in field practice until the summer…”
Professor Shen cast a meaningful glance at him. After a period of contact, he had already figured out the student's temperament - sometimes it seemed to be loose, but it was only because he didn't come across anything that really interested him.
Sure enough, Shaw's eyes lit up. He thought for a while, then smiled and raised his head.
“When is the deadline for this application?”
After that, Shaw took part in a one-month field trip in order to write the “Wenbo Scholarship” thesis. It is rare to hear that he actually participated in school activities, and he was so laborious. The members of Isolated were amazed by this. They even came to care about Shaw a few times, but found that he was not as tired as they imagined, but his whole person was full of inspiration. An eye-catching radiance.
People always enjoy doing what they love.  For Shaw, a month passed like running water.
Although Professor Shen kept him concerned about the results of the scholarship, to Shaw, the selection results were not important. The moment he submitted the paper, he already knew the result. This result filled his chest with a cheerful emotion at all times.
Just like when he tried to restore the original appearance of the cultural relics from the layers of sand, he forgot the passage of time due to delving into incomprehensible academics—
The results obtained through hard work are as interesting to him as the process.
Shaw in front of the podium retracted his thoughts and glanced at the people under the stage.
Tumblr media
He smiled, pulled up the microphone, and leaned over after a sharp hum—
The presentation went as smoothly as expected.
After the meeting, Professor Shen introduced Shaw to those professors and experts, and suggested that everyone take a photo together. Shaw, who was praised by the professors, always felt that something was missing in this harmonious atmosphere.
“... Teacher, what time is it?”
“It's almost six o'clock, what's the matter?”
Shaw was silent for a while, as if he had decided something, he bowed slightly to the professors.
“Sorry, I'm suddenly in a hurry, I'll be leaving first.”
Tumblr media
✧[Chapter 5: The 100th performance]✧
The entrance of the Live House was crowded with people, Shaw thought for a while, then climbed up the wall and walked in through the back door.
There was a lively voice in the aisle, and in the noise, he heard someone calling him.
 “Where's Shaw?”
When Shaw heard the sound, he saw that the owner of the Live House and the band members were standing in front of him.
Facing the boss's questioning, Jensen smiled and smoothed things out: “He was in a hurry and may not be able to make it.”
“Then why didn't you tell me beforehand? Today was such a big event, how can the band suddenly lack one person...”
“I'm here.”
Shaw put one hand in his pocket and walked out of the dark.
The boss and the band members both widened their eyes, not because of Shaw who suddenly “falled from the sky”, but because of...
“What are you wearing?”
Adam habitually asked first, and when he met Shaw's gaze, he looked away unnaturally.
Shaw tilted his head and thought for a while, then looked at Randal: “Don't you have an extra coat in the lounge? Lend me for a while.”
Randal froze for a moment, then nodded hastily.
“Yes, yes!”
“Don’t talk about coats anymore. Pants, shoes and accessories all that, I can get you a whole set!”
“.......”
Although the show was not rehearsed in advance, the tacit understanding of Isolated did not require any rehearsals.
They didn't ask the reason for Shaw's sudden appearance, but naturally picked up the instrument to audition, just like they had done in countless previous performances
Under the flickering stage lights, screams rang out.
Until the end of the song, the fanatical mood of the audience ignited by Isolated could not subside for a long time.
Among the ribbons flying all over the sky, the staff raised the camera and shouted to the five people on the stage.
“Today happens to be our band's 100th performance, which is especially memorable. Let's take a photo together!”
Shaw complained: “... I'll still remember this.”
Jensen withdrew his head: “One, two, three - Eggplant!”
The eggplant band members raised their index fingers high towards the camera, Shaw pouted, showing the same gesture.
After the group photo, Jensen and the boss confirmed the matters for the next performance. The other members were busy collecting equipment. Randal suddenly shouted: “I really want a drink! Who is free to buy it?” The members agreed. his eyes tacitly turned to Shaw who had just returned from changing his clothes.
Shaw subconsciously frowned, but when he saw the expressions the members were expecting, he swallowed the words of rejection.
“……so troublesome.”
He walked to the street and bought a few cans of soda from the vending machine on the side of the road, when his phone suddenly rang.
The moment he saw the message, the first cheerful smile on Shaw's face instantly collapsed.
“Adam: Now that you've got your stuff cleaned up, you've got stuff left at the Live House.”
Tumblr media
✧[Chapter 6: Leave it to the future]✧
A nameless anger surged in Shaw's heart, he rushed back to the Live House with a sullen face, and the pace under his feet became faster and faster.
Shaw pushed open the door of the lounge “with murderous intent”, and was about to ask what Adam meant when he heard a “bang”, and countless streamers suddenly fell from the top of his head.
“Happy birthday!”
Shaw was stunned.
The members of Isolated looked at him with a playful smile, and Adam laughed especially wildly.
“Look at the expression of this brat, he’s definitely angry and ready to put up a fight!”
“...What are you guys doing?”
Looking at Shaw, who was rarely a little confused, Randal punched and pointed at the cake on the coffee table.
“What are you talking about? As a birthday star, don't tell me you forgot what day it was today?”
“It's hard to say.” Adam rolled his eyes. “After all, this kid's phone has been turned off all day, so he might be crying.”
Randal nodded thoughtfully: “It makes sense, after all, if you find fault with him early in the morning, he must not be in the mood to celebrate his birthday. It was estimated that he even missed the school speech in the afternoon. No wonder the security didn't let us in...  ”
Shaw's originally speechless expression was stunned for a moment. He took out his mobile phone and turned it on, and saw that there were indeed several messages from the members.
“Did you guys come to school?”
Adam rolled his eyes again : “Bullshit. We’ve already agreed to stand for you when it’s your turn to speak, do we look that untrustworthy?”
Seeing the two of them having a lively conversation, Jensen hurriedly stepped forward and supported the shoulders of the two of them.
“That's right.... The members of our Isolated are to support each other and understand each other, and communicate with each other if there's any problem.”
“Who wants to have an understanding with this brat? I just don't agree with destroying the complete arrangement of the song.” Adam shook Jensen's hand away.
Shaw also nodded as a matter of course: “Indeed, I will change it later when I feel it.”
“.........”
Seeing the embarrassment on Jensen's face, Randal hurriedly interrupted, “Shaw, come and open the present!”
The touch in his hands was a bit familiar. When Shaw saw it, it turned out to be the same “Hercules doll” in the “Miaomiao Paradise Birthday Package”, but it was more refined than that, and it was provocatively showing off his biceps to Shaw...
Adam smiled wickedly: “I heard that this was a very popular animated character recently, which just represents our blessing to you - I hope you can thrive in the future and become a muscular man as soon as possible!”
In the eyes of everyone “watching a good show”, Shaw was silent for a moment, then suddenly burst out laughing.
Randal's smile was instantly frightened away: “It's over, this kid has gone stupid.”
Jensen couldn't help interrupting their nonsense, and smiled and hugged everyone, “Okay, come and eat the cake.”
Fitch, who had been watching, suddenly stepped forward and smeared a cream on Shaw's face.
“.......”
The Live House was lively, tacitly as usual.
As night fell, Shaw placed the “Hercules Doll” next to two boxes of archaeological materials in the antique shop.
He casually played with the animal-print snuff bottle on the counter with rock candy agate, and said to himself, “Old man, you have a good eye for things, but your eye for people is not so good.”
Shaw smiled lightly, as if he was talking to the person in the memory through a snuff bottle.
“I'm in graduate school now, and there are a few people I get along with.”
“You used to worry that when I became your age, I would be lonely like you, guarding this slap-sized shop all day - ”
Shaw's voice paused for a while, and the curvature of the corners of his mouth deepened.
“Can you rest assured now?”
He stretched his brows and eyes softly, and lay down on the bench at will: “I'm fine now, I have things I like, and a direction I want to explore. I didn't lose any of you, I won the most authoritative scholarship in my major. If you see me now, I'm sure you'll be happy for me.”
“As for the apprentice and daughter-in-law you mentioned”
“Let's forget about it for the time being.”
Shaw rested his head on his arms and looked at the silent night sky, his eyes shining brightly.
“Maybe it will happen someday in the future.”
“But those things in the future, leave it to the future.”

[CN] Shaw’s Summer Solstice Date
🍒 Warning: This post contains detailed spoilers for a date, 夏至之约, which has not been released in EN! 🍒
Be sure read his Birthday R&S and Date Prologue before this!!
Tumblr media
[ This date was released on 16 June 2021 ]
The wheels of the skateboard scrape the ground, and the scenery flows past me leisurely.
The gift bag in my hand wobbles, occasionally bumping against the leather belt hanging from my waist, letting out a crisp sound.
Seeing an upcoming crack in the stone surface, I step on the tail of the board, steadying my centre of gravity, and then jump up with both feet-
THUD!
The skateboard tilts as it flies, crossing over the crack deftly, and continuing to bring me forward.
A perfect dolphin flip.
Tumblr media
MC: Huff... if only Shaw could see that trick just now. He wouldn’t keep saying that I’m not practising enough...
I pout with mild regret. Just as I’m about to make the final turn, the music in my earphones abruptly stops, replaced by my ringtone.
Stepping onto the skateboard to make it stop, I retrieve my phone. Shaw’s display picture flashes on the screen along with the ringtone.
MC: Shaw? Are you back in the city?
Shaw: Mm, I returned last night.
MC: That’s great. Does this mean we can meet at the skatepark later?
Shaw: Afraid not.
MC: Huh?
Shaw: Something cropped up and the department is lacking manpower, so I was asked to help out.
MC: What happened?
Shaw: Just something trivial-- Hey! Line up properly. Don’t run around...!
Shaw’s voice grows a little distant. The sound of lively children drifts from the other end of the line, and I’m left stunned.
MC: Where are you right now?
Shaw: Erm, nowhere. I’ll be busy here for a while, so just wait for my call.
He hangs up, leaving me utterly confused.
MC: If the Department of Archaeology is asking for Shaw’s help, why are kids involved?
I shake my head. Based on Shaw’s temperament, he wouldn’t give me an answer even if I were to probe further. I might as well ask him in person later.
-
Tumblr media
Opening the door using the key Shaw gave to me, I’m just about to put down the gift in my hand when I notice certain changes in the house.
The trash bag that I didn’t have time to clear away yesterday has disappeared from the entrance, and the bass has shifted its position.
A few more notebooks are on the sofa, there’s a leather jacket, and a few boxes that were stacked together before are gone...
Even the balloons which were hung crookedly have been set right.
MC: Did Shaw come home? Does this mean he’s already seen how I tormented his house?!
I can’t help but feel slightly dejected at the thought of my surprise being ruined in advance.
At the same time, I also can’t help but start imagining what his expression was like when he saw the room yesterday.
Shocked? Resigned? Within his expectations? Did his eyebrows arch or droop? Did the corners of his lips rise or remain straight?
This rascal definitely also roasted me with a “passable” or “that’s all”.
...did he also say that he “really likes it” just like last year?
The overflowing light in Shaw’s eyes from that night last year flashes across my mind, and my heartbeat inexplicably stutters out of rhythm.
Rubbing my cheeks with my hands, my line of sight returns to the notebooks Shaw had casually left on the sofa, and I pause.
MC: What’s that...?
Walking over, I pull out a pamphlet from underneath the notebooks.
MC: 21 June to 23 June... Loveland Elementary and Middle School History Appreciation Day?!
Making a mental association with the clamour from the call with Shaw earlier, a strange guess surfaces in my mind.
MC: Could Shaw be at...
-
MC: Hello, you can drop me off at the entrance of the museum, thank you.
Stepping out of the taxi, I gaze at the Loveland City Museum in front of me.
The entrance is bustling with activity. Most of the visitors are little kids around ten years of age. They are wearing school uniforms, entering the museum in orderly lines while led by teachers and volunteers.
MC: Will Shaw really be here...
After buying a ticket and walking towards the queue, I start mumbling in my heart.
Staff: Hello Miss, you can’t bring your skateboard into the museum. Please leave it in the storeroom at the entrance.
MC: Ah, thanks for the reminder.
The staff gives me a friendly smile, but I feel slightly embarrassed.
After all, people typically wouldn’t dress like this and have a skateboard on their backs while walking around the museum.
If I had known earlier, I shouldn’t have brought the skateboard along...
Tugging on the hem of my shorts in guilt, I head towards the storeroom while a group of kids stare at me.
-
Because of the event, the Loveland City Museum isn’t as solemn as it usually is, and there’s more liveliness in the air.
Kids are lined up in the exhibition hall and following the volunteers, full of spirit as they listen to explanations related to the historical relics.
I can hear occasional exclamations of “wow” and “ah”.
Scanning the surroundings, I find myself passing by the porcelain hall and entering the bronze ware hall.
Tumblr media
There aren’t many visitors and students here. The ancient historical relics give off a tranquil lustre underneath the tender light, causing one to instinctively slow down their pace.
??: ...in order to pray for his son’s health, a person with the surname “Xun” created this bronze food vessel.
While shuttling around the exhibition hall, I suddenly hear a familiar voice drifting over from behind the wall.
Tumblr media
I walk towards a nearby shelf and peek my head out secretly, watching a bunch of kids surround a tall and slender figure.
It’s Shaw.
He’s wearing a volunteer jacket which is completely incompatible with his personality. His sleeves are a little short. When he lifts his arms, his thin but sturdy wrists can be seen.
Whether it’s his voice or appearance, this is a Shaw I’ve never seen before.
Shaw: Here. Do you see this? What does the word on this oracle bone look like?
[Trivia] Oracle bones are pieces of ox bones or turtle shells used as a form of divination in ancient China. Diviners would carve questions to deities onto the bone or shell with a sharp tool. Intense heat would then then applied to it until it cracks. The diviner would interpret the patterns of the cracks
Student: Like... like a big mouth!
Shaw: Mm, that’s half correct. This word is “tooth”.
[Trivia] The inscription on the oracle bone probably looks like this:
Tumblr media
He lowers his head slightly, explaining the historical relic to the kids who barely reach the height of his waist.
His brows, which are always arched and stubborn, have become gentler beneath the warm yellow halo of the exhibition hall.
He points at the electronic screen next to the exhibit, enlarging the explanation of the oracle bone and reading it with a soft voice.
Tumblr media
Shaw: Males have teeth at eight months old, and lose their baby teeth at eight years old. Females have teeth at seven months old, and lose their teeth at seven years old. This word “tooth” is missing its front teeth. Doesn’t it resemble how you’re all losing your baby teeth?
With this, the kids immediately cover their mouths abashedly, letting laugher seep out from the space between their fingers.
MC: Pfft...
I can’t help but join in the laughter.
At this point, a kid suddenly spots me, then points in my direction.
Student: Wow, that Big Sister and Big Brother Shaw are wearing the same clothes!
After I’m pointed out by the student, Shaw turns around.
When he sees “that Big Sister”, Shaw arches his brows.
Tumblr media
Shaw: [gasps softly] What are you doing here?
MC: [blushes] I was just... just looking for you...
I step out from behind the shelf, landing my gaze on him.
From the back, Shaw looks like a proper museum volunteer.
But underneath his jacket, he’s wearing a casual shirt which matches mine. Even the embroidery patch that I planned to give him as a present has been pasted at his chest region.
The ash black belt, flamboyant lightning patterns, and the drooping chain which are incompatible with the surroundings...
At a glance, one can sense the rebellious heart hidden underneath that “proper” jacket.
After seeing me, Shaw seems to be slightly less at ease, and he waves at me.
Tumblr media
Shaw: I’ll talk to you later. I’m busy here. You can walk around by yourself first.
Really? He’s chasing me away the moment I’m here?
With this unspoken gripe, I purse my lips. Suddenly, I have a mischievous idea.
MC: Fine.
I stand at the back of the line of kids, pretending to look around.
MC: Sigh, all I can do is look at the liveliness while walking around the museum alone... No one tells me about the symbolism of the historical relics and the meaning behind them...
While speaking, my head droops pitifully.
Seeing this, a student immediately tugs on my hand in a friendly manner.
Student: Big Sister, it’s okay if you don’t understand. Big Brother Shaw can teach you everything!
He lifts his head and speaks to Shaw.
Student: Big Brother Shaw, this Big Sister really wants to learn. Can she listen along with us?
I instantly nod my head, exclaiming in an exaggerated fashion.
MC: Wow~ That’s great! Big Brother Shaw, can I listen to your explanation too?
Tumblr media
Shaw: ...
...am I seeing things? Is Shaw...
Before I can tell if the red hue on his cheeks was a hallucination, Shaw has already returned to his usual state in the blink of an eye.
[Note] The reason why “Big Brother Shaw” (凌哥哥 - “ling ge ge”)resulted in this reaction is because 哥哥 is often used in a coquettish manner! It’s akin to calling someone “oppa” in Korea and “onii-san” in Japan!
Tumblr media
Shaw: Tch. Listen if you want to.
Without changing his expression, he gives me a glance before turning around and continuing his explanation to the kids.
Initially, I listened in just as a joke. But without realising it, I was completely engrossed in Shaw’s words.
Tumblr media
Shaw: ...“In my left hand I grasp a flute; In my right I hold a pheasant's feather.” The “flute” mentioned in the poetry book “Jian Xi” refers to an ancient wind instrument like this. Are there any students interested in playing the bamboo flute? This is its ancestor...
Shaw: ...this porcelain kilt is most well known for its colour, which is akin to sunshine after the rain. But what the common people praise as “sunshine after the rain” is actually the firewood kiln...
Tumblr media
Shaw: Huh? It resembles the colour of my hair? How? Tch. It’s obvious that your art lessons were taken over by your math teacher...
Tumblr media
Shaw: ...and this “Painting of a Courtyard and Dayliles” was done by a painter from the Xuan He Imperial Art Academy. From the annotations, this painting was meant to express sorrow regarding his mother’s death...
Shaw: In ancient times, dayliles symbolised maternal figures. It shares the same meaning as how you give carnations to your mothers...
There’s a light in his eyes while he talks about these historical relics.
After bringing them around a few exhibition halls, Shaw takes the kids to the exit.
In just a short span of time, Shaw had already garnered much respect from the kids. One of the them tugs on his sleeve with a look of anticipation.
Student: Big Brother Shaw, I want to learn history when I grow up, and become as incredible as you! I want to know everything too!
As the “only child” in the Department of Archaeology of Loveland University, I originally expected Shaw to welcome this kid’s aspiration. However, he shakes his head.
Tumblr media
Shaw: What do you think history is?
Student: Those historical relics Big Brother told us about earlier.
Shaw: Wrong. They’re just one part of history. History exists in a block of dirt, a paragraph of words, and in a painting. These historical relics in the museum are history. The textbooks in your hands are also history. Everything that will happen in the future will also become history.
The student blinks, having a hazy notion of what he said.
Student: If everything is history, how am I supposed to learn it?
Tumblr media
Shaw: [gently] There’s no need to deliberately learn it. It’s everywhere.
Shaw rubs the kid’s head.
Tumblr media
Shaw: Don’t mull over things that are so far ahead. For now, pay attention in class. When the time comes, whether you get zero or a hundred marks, they will all become your history.
-
When we step out of the museum, Shaw is called over by another volunteer, and it seems there are other things for him to do.
He waves at me, and I have no choice but to wait for him at the entrance.
I look around my surroundings in boredom, and discover that some kids are crowded together. They seem to be pressing something onto the hand of a volunteer.
MC: What are you guys doing?
Student: We’re stamping little red flowers on the Big Brothers and Big Sisters! Our teacher says that people who perform well must be rewarded with a little red flower! Big Sister, isn’t Big Brother Shaw here yet? We have to assemble and return to school soon, but I want to give him a stamp...
MC: He might only be here after a while...
Imagining the back of Shaw’s hand covered with little red flowers, I can’t help but laugh.
MC: How about this - I’ll do the stamping for you?
Retrieving a piece of chocolate from my pocket, I offer it in exchange.
The student considers this for a moment, then nods.
Student: Mm... okay.
MC: Do you only have a little red flower stamp? Do you have any others?
Student: Yes! I have a kitten stamp, a little bunny stamp, a red panda stamp...
MC: I’ll use the red panda stamp then!
I take the stamp from the kid’s hand. Even before I can explain myself, a hand suddenly snatches the stamp from behind.
In the next second, I feel something being pressed on my face gently.
Shaw: [laugh] It suits you pretty well.
MC: !!
The prank I planned was snatched from me. I turn around.
Tumblr media
Shaw pinches the stamp with one hand, arching his brows as he looks at me with pride.
While he’s defenceless, I stand on my tiptoes and grab Shaw’s raised arm, snatching the stamp from his hand.
MC: It’s only fair if each one of us has a go!
Gripping it, I think of leaving a stamp on his face too. But Shaw dodges deftly, not giving me a chance to take revenge.
This small scuffle startles the kids in the surroundings. Their eyes are bright as they watch two adults engage in horseplay.
Laughter drifts from the crowd, and it’s clear that we’ve caught everyone’s attention.
Tumblr media
Realising this, Shaw clicks his tongue. His hand catches both of my wrists.
I’m unable to free myself, and Shaw pulls me to a corner with ease.
The narrow corner only has space for two. His scorching breaths carry a smile, falling on my forehead and eyelashes.
Shaw: To be watched by a bunch of kids - you’re so childish.
MC: The person who stamped me first has no right to talk.
Shaw: The person with the idea to do the stamping is the one with no right.
MC: Fine, I can’t win against you. I’m done playing, so let me go.
Shaw pinches my wrist, then releases me.
Tumblr media
Just as I’m released from my shackles, I seize this opportunity to raise my hand, sending the small stamp towards Shaw’s face!
MC: Success!
Not expecting my bluff, Shaw only has time to step backwards.
As a result, a picture of a red panda is stamped directly on Shaw’s lips.
Shaw’s eyes widen.
Shaw: ...
The air in the surroundings stagnant for a moment. Not expecting to stamp the wrong spot, I feel slightly embarrassed.
After the shock passes, a dangerous aura brews in his narrowed eyes.
I quickly retract my hand, retrieving a sheet of tissue from my bag and handing it to him.
MC: Sorry, I didn’t think I’d stamp the wrong spot... why don’t you stamp me back? I promise not to resist. Is that okay?
Shaw: If I were to take revenge, I wouldn’t use something like a stamp.
Not understanding this, I blink nervously.
MC: S-so... what would you use?
Shaw takes the sheet of tissue from my hand, wiping the colour off his lips.
After being rubbed clean, a bright red tint remains on his lips, and it looks inexplicably attractive.
Noticing that I’m still staring at him, he balls up the sheet of tissue and arches his brows.
Shaw: Guess for yourself.
-
Even though we spent half of the day in the museum, we manage to successfully reach the skatepark in the late afternoon.
MC: This is great! There aren’t many people in the skatepark or the bowl!
After doing some warmups, I step on the skateboard and head over to the side of the bowl. When I see the deep depression of the bowl-shaped curve, my heart feels a little nervous.
Tumblr media
Shaw: Scared?
MC: Not at all... As a mentor, shouldn’t you do a demonstration for your disciple first?
Shaw laughs, and he doesn’t expose me.
Half of his skateboard peeks out at the edge of the bowl, and he snaps his fingers at me.
Shaw: I’ll only do it once. Watch carefully.
With this, Shaw leans forward, rushing into the bowl.
He steps on the skateboard, moving in the green bowl wilfully.
At times, he skates around in circles. At other times, he skates up and down. He even grabs the skateboard and leaps up in the air at the highest point, then draws a graceful arc as he comes back down.
He’s just like a swift which doesn’t know fatigue, or a fish which is forever free.
With a final smooth flip, he rides up the bowl, stopping in front of me.
Shaw: Okay, the demonstration’s over. It’s your turn. Relax, you’re my “disciple”.
Pumping myself up, I mimic him and peek half of my skateboard at the edge of the bowl, taking a deep breath.
MC: I can definitely do it.
The moment the skateboard tilts, the sudden gravity sends me rushing downwards-
In the next second, the skateboard sends me upwards!
I did it!
It turns out that with just a wave of courage and a resolute heart, I can exchange them with a gigantic sense of fulfilment and happiness.
On the skateboard, I’m like a see-saw in the bowl, moving up and down.
While speeding around in circles in the bowl, I look in Shaw’s direction and notice that he’s staring at me in concentration.
Being watched with such a gaze, my heart feels like it’s about to burst. I can’t help but shout.
MC: Shaw! Look, I did it! Ah!!
Not even a second after my satisfied declaration, the skateboard beneath my feet suddenly loses control and tilts to the side, causing me to fall down.
Even though I manage to break my fall after having my fair share of tumbling experiences, the pain instantly rushes to my brain.
I lie down in the bowl. From my peripheral vision, I watch as a figure seems to leap down into the bowl.
Tumblr media
Shaw: I saw it. This is the consequence of showing off.
Hearing Shaw’s gloating tone, I pant with rage.
MC: I wasn’t showing off. It was just a mistake... [hisses in pain]
Tumblr media
Shaw: You’re in so much pain that you can’t even speak clearly, yet you’re still so stubborn. Where did you fall?
MC: My elbow. My leg’s cramping up a little...
Shaw clicks his tongue. Bending down, he stretches out his arms. Carefully avoiding the injured spot, he carries me up.
His palm is on my waist, and the sudden closing of distance makes me hold my breath.
Biting my lower lip, I reach out in a frenzy, wanting to push his arms away.
MC: [blushing] I’m wearing protective gear, so I’m fine. Also, I found a technique to do it, so I can definitely succeed if I try again...
Tumblr media
Shaw: Try again later. For now, get proper rest.
Not allowing me to retort, Shaw brings me out of the bowl and towards the resting area.
MC: [blushing] Shaw...
Shaw: Hm?
MC: I’m a little curious... People who skateboard fall often. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen you fall.
Shaw: You just didn’t see it. The first time I did bowl skating, I fell too.
MC: Really? How was it like when you did bowl skating for the first time?
Shaw: Mm, I can’t really remember. I think I wasn’t in a good mood, and I competed against a senior.
He pauses before adding.
Shaw: I just remember winning in the end.
MC: You have such a competitive streak...
Shaw: Don’t people around the age of ten want to get swept away, win against everyone, and leave everyone else far behind them?
MC: What about now?
Shaw lowers his eyes and glances at me.
His tone is indifferent, but his words are resolute.
Tumblr media
Shaw: Now, the process can be slow, but I must still win in the end.
We arrive at a corner of the resting area. Sensing that it’s almost time, I look at the nearby vending machine and am struck with an idea.
MC: Shaw, it isn’t convenient for me to walk right now... could you buy me a can of Cola?
Shaw doesn’t decline. He turns around and heads over to the vending machine. Seizing this opportunity, I grab my bag, taking out the birthday cake at the very bottom.
MC: Fortunately, it isn’t crushed...
After hiding the box behind my back, I watch as Shaw walks over to me with two cans of Cola. I shoot him a huge smile.
MC: Happy birthday!
Shaw: Happy birthday to me.
Shaw and I speak in unison. He stretches out his hand confidently.
Shaw: Okay, you can take out the cake now.
MC: How did you know...
Tumblr media
Shaw: Your ideas are too easy to guess. Didn’t you send me away to give me a surprise? Or do you need me to pretend to be overwhelmed by shock?
MC: Shaw! Why don’t you know how to enjoy fun in life!
Tumblr media
Shaw: How do I not know how to have fun in life? If I didn’t, would I have let you torment my room?
MC: ...
I pass the cake to him indignantly. Shaw sits beside me and opens the cake box.
Tumblr media
Shaw: Did you make it yourself?
MC: ...I’m not taking responsibility if it tastes bad. Regardless, you have to give me some self-respect.
Shaw laughs. He holds up a fork and tries a piece.
Tumblr media
Watching him purse his lips for a long time without speaking, I can’t help but poke him.
MC: Hey... does it taste good or not?
Tumblr media
Shaw: Try a bite yourself?
He sticks the fork into a small piece of cake and brings it to my lips. I lean over and give it a bite.
MC: ...it just tastes like cake.
When Shaw hears this answer, he becomes even more amused.
Tumblr media
Shaw: Not bad. You have a very accurate understanding of your skills.
Despite what he says, Shaw brings another piece of cake into his mouth.
On this late summer afternoon where sweat hangs in the air, it isn’t suitable for eating such sweet food.
But he takes a bite after another, finishing the cake completely.
The youths in the skatepark are shouting and laughing boisterously. Meanwhile, Shaw accompanies me as we sit underneath the shade of trees, eating the birthday cake.
This intriguing atmosphere brews a different sentiment, growing wilfully in our limbs and bones.
MC: Oh yes, I keep forgetting to ask. Why did you unwrap your birthday gifts in advance?
Tumblr media
Shaw: Birthday gifts?
MC: The shirt and the embroidery patch... they were birthday gifts I prepared for you.
Shaw opens a can of Cola, looking down at his shirt.
Tumblr media
Shaw: Since it’s for me, I can wear it whenever I want to.
MC: Even so, you can’t just open them in advance. The atmosphere’s gone...
Shaw: There’s no need for any atmosphere to give an embroidery patch.
MC: That’s not the only gift.
I count using my fingers.
MC: A custom-made embroidery sticker, cake, new shirt, new skateboard, new bass picks, Metallica’s album...
Shaw doesn't react at all while I count, and I can’t help but feel a little discouraged.
MC: Your brows are arched so high. Are you dissatisfied with my gifts?
Tumblr media
Shaw: Mm, I’m not really satisfied.
My eyes widen-
I had prepared all the gifts that I could think of and thought were suitable for his birthday. But Shaw actually said that he wasn’t satisfied?!
MC: In that case, just tell me what gift you want directly! Anyway, you aren’t satisfied with my gifts, and you’re always so picky. Next year, I won’t even give...
Before I can finish speaking, a shadow suddenly looms closer.
Tumblr media
Shaw: ...you’re going to die from stupidity.
In the next second, something ice-cold blends with warmth as it stamps my lips without warming.
The soft sensation causes my mind to crash instantly, and gives Shaw an opening.
The taste of the soft drink spreads from the tip of my tongue. Non-existent bubbles explode at my ears one after another.
So this is what blueberry cake mixed with Cola tastes like.
Shaw’s scent encases me completely, occupying my sense of smell, my sense of touch, and sense of hearing. Every single nerve is clamouring.
A suddenly droplet of water falls from a tree leaf, plopping onto my hair. From afar, someone seems to be say, “It’s raining.”
After an unknown amount of time, beneath this sudden curtain of rain on a day with clear skies, Shaw shows me a dazzling and stunning smile.
Tumblr media
Shaw: This gift isn’t bad. Wish me a happy birthday again.

Sammy going skateboarding with a Shaw sibling? (‘Cuz Luke’s not able to, he’s too heavy 😂)
Lmao!! I love it friend! Especially since I headcanon that Sam is learning to skate during H&S
~~~
"Ok, Sammy. Everything strapped on all right?" Hattie asked as she felt over Sam's knee pads, elbow pads, and helmet
"Everything's good, Hatts." Sam told her
Sam would rather not wear all the equipment, but Hattie refused to let her go skateboarding without it
Something about not wanting to be hunted to the ends of the earth by Deckard and her dad
"Good." Hattie smiled at her. She had her own helmet and pads on, making her less of a badass spy and more like the aunt she was
Sam couldn't help but giggle when she first saw Hattie
"Can we start skateboarding now?" Sam whined, clutching her own board. Owen and Roman had helped pick it out for her and she hadn't gotten a chance to ride it yet
"Of course." Hattie chuckled and picked up her own custom board
Side by side, they walked further into the skatepark. Sam couldn't help but marvel at all of the people doing tricks as they skated
"Aunt Hatts, can you teach me to do that?" Sam tugged on Hattie's arm
"I don't see why not." Hattie shrugged. "Let's find a quiet corner for you to try."
They were able to find a private corner not in use and spent the afternoon on their boards
Sam couldn't help but laugh at the way everyone in the park would stop and stare as Hattie did trick after trick
She had gotten lucky and gotten one of the best aunts ever
~~~
I hope you enjoyed friend!

Paralympian Evan Strong Spotlights First-Ever Dew Tour Adaptive Skateboarding Competition
Tumblr media
NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA – MAY 21: Paralympian Evan Strong flights his skateboard down a hill on May … [+] 21, 2020 in Nevada City, California. Strong is doing a mix of weight lifting, skateboarding, mountain cycling, and combined martial arts to remain in shape throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Strong won the gold medal in para snowboard cross at the 2014 Paralympics in Russia the silver medal in banked slalom at the 2018 South Korean Paralympic Games. When he was 17-years-old Strong was struck by an approaching cars and truck while riding a bike, which led to the amputation of his left leg listed below the knee. Athletes around the world are now training in seclusion under rigorous policies in location due to the Covid-19 pandemic. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

Dew Tour marks lots of firsts in 2021. It’s the very first time the occasion has actually been kept in Des Moines, Iowa—house to the brand-new Lauridsen Skatepark, now the biggest skatepark in the United States.
It’s not the very first time Dew Tour has actually worked as an approved certifying occasion for skateboarding ahead of its launching in the Tokyo Olympics—the very same held true in 2019, prior to the certification duration was extended a year to represent Covid-19—however it’s the very first time hopefuls can definitively clinch an Olympic berth.
And for the very first time considering that its launching in 2005, Summer Dew Tour includes adaptive skateboarding competitors—in ladies’s and guys’s street and guys’s park. Now a recognized part of Winter Dew Tour, the objective is that moving on, the summertime occasion will make adaptive competitors irreversible.
“Incorporating adaptive skateboarding has been part of our plan for quite some time. With the support of our mobility partner Toyota, we were able to make it happen this year,” Dew Tour vice president and basic supervisor Courtney Gresik informed me. “Our goal is to keep it part of our event and help raise the awareness of adaptive skateboarding and its incredible athletes.”
On May 17, Toyota, currently a sponsor of Team U.S.A. Olympians and Paralympians—consisting of two-time Paralympic snowboard medalist Evan Strong—revealed a program in collaboration with the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Foundation to support U.S. Paralympic professional athletes.
Through the program, which makes use of the freshly developed Toyota U.S. Paralympic Fund, Toyota will supply qualified Team U.S.A. Paralympic professional athletes presently training and in contention for the Tokyo and Beijing Games a one-time $3,000 stipend. Opt-in sponsorship chances will likewise be made to professional athletes called to the U.S. Paralympic Team for both the Tokyo and Beijing Games.
“Toyota believes in the power of sport and its ability to connect people with diverse backgrounds as they compete with mutual respect towards a common goal,” stated Dedra DeLilli, group supervisor, Sponsorship, Integration, and Auto Shows, Toyota Marketing, Toyota Motor North America. “There is no better place than the Paralympic Games for Toyota to reinforce our fervent belief that everyone is entitled to the freedom of movement in a more inclusive society.”
Strong, who won gold in snowboardcross at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games and silver in banked slalom at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Games, is preparing to choose snowboard gold once again at Beijing 2022.

However, he has actually likewise been dealing with a coach who trains able-bodied snowboarders and contending in able-bodied snowboard racing, and his ultimate objective is to contend versus able-bodied riders in Olympic snowboardcross and banked slalom.
But climbing up the world ranks of Olympic and Paralympic snowboarding isn’t adequate to please Strong’ s competitive drive. Sunday’s Dew Tour adaptive skateboarding competitors is a crucial action towards Strong understanding a dream he’s had considering that youth.
Before being struck by an intoxicated chauffeur while riding his motorbike at age 17, which needed the amputation of his left leg listed below the knee, the Maui local was a sponsored skateboarder growing.
After the mishap, Strong didn’t believe he’d get a skateboard once again, not to mention contend at any level. It took some motivation from Jon Comer, the very first expert skateboarder with a prosthetic limb, to get Strong to get his board once again.
“Jon Comer really set the example. He called me when I was in the hospital after my leg was amputated,” Strong stated. “He asked if I thought I wanted to skate again, and I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘Well, what do you want to do?’ I said, ‘If I could ever just skate a mini ramp again, I’d be the happiest,’” Strong remembered.
“Jon said, ‘Oh, you’ll definitely get that. What else?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’ll totally be able to skate a mini ramp.’ I was one week in, still in the ICU, and a professional skater just calls me up and basically gave me permission to rip. He was truly an athlete before his time.”
Comer passed away in December 2019; Strong mentions him as one of the most prominent figures in his own competitive skateboarding profession, in addition to Amy Purdy and Daniel Gale, creators of the not-for-profit Adaptive Action Sports.
Strong fulfilled Gale simply 2 years after his mishap, when he was 20. Purdy and Gale contributed in getting adaptive occasions contributed to the X Games and Winter Dew Tour programs. Now, in 2021, adaptive skateboarding lastly discovers a house on the Dew Tour.
Through his own deal with Adaptive Action Sports, Strong’s objective is to reveal other adaptive professional athletes what Comer, Purdy and Gale had the ability to reveal him—that sports, and competitive sports, stay on the table after their mishaps.
“I’ve been super passionate about their mission statement because people like that picked me up after my amputation,” Strong stated. “After I had the ability to stand back up, after having that near-death experience, to be able to fulfill someone who’s existed, due to the fact that of Daniel and Amy Purdy and Adaptive Action Sports I’ve had the ability to get in touch with a lot of of these people: young, old, young boy, woman, veterans.
“I’ve been able to see the magic of getting out with your buddies and having a good time playing outside and see people come out of this shell-shocked place after their accident and come to life.”
The guys’s park adaptive skateboarding field is the inmost of the 3 Dew Tour occasions, at 13; the ladies’s street field consists of 6 skaters and the guys’s street last functions 12.
The guys’s park occasion includes other well-known adaptive skateboarders Felipe Nunes of Brazil, who is a double amputee, and Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham of the U.S., whose wheelchair techniques regularly go viral.
Sunday, adaptive skateboarding debuts at Dew Tour. In the Los Angeles 2028 Games, it might be an Olympic discipline. If he’s still actively contending at that time—and offered his extreme training and healthy way of life, Strong believes he’s in much better shape now at 34 than he has actually remained in the past—Strong is positive that he might medal in that occasion. And that’s not all he has in his sights.
An devoted web surfer maturing in Maui, Strong has actually likewise contended in several adaptive browse competitors. As browsing makes its Olympic launching in the 2021 Tokyo Games together with skateboarding, adaptive browsing might likewise quickly be on the program—maybe by the L.A. 2028 Paralympics.
It wouldn’t be a stretch to envision the naturally talented professional athlete might contend in 3 various Paralympic sports by the time his competitive profession has actually concluded.
Tumblr media
NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA – MIGHT 21: Paralympian Evan Strong flights his mountain bicycle throughout a training … [+] session on May 21, 2020 in Nevada City, California. Strong is doing a mix of weight lifting, skateboarding, mountain cycling, and combined martial arts to remain in shape throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. For now, nevertheless, Strong is concentrated on the chance in front of him—the opportunity to when again contend in skateboarding medal occasions.
“The field is growing; I think this might be one of the biggest adaptive fields for a skate contest in history,” Strong stated. “There’s strength in numbers, and I’m only as strong as my sport.”
To grow adaptive skateboarding, potentially at a Paralympic level, “we need lots of nations,” Strong stated. “You’ve got to to find someone who has a permanent physical disability that can then get access to a skateboard and a place to ride it, so things like this [Dew Tour] and seeing the numbers of competitors grow is huge, because without that, we’re not here.”
“While adaptive skateboarding isn’t currently an official Paralympic support, Toyota has been, and remains committed to be, an active supporter of Paralympic athletes and adaptive sports,” DeLilli stated. “We are excited to be a part of Dew Tour’s first-ever adaptive skateboard competition.”
It’s all been leading up to this, and while Strong assisted prepare for adaptive skateboarding’s addition at Dew Tour, he likewise believes its timing is serendipitous—particularly as the occasion exists by Toyota, and he’s now a Team Toyota professional athlete.
“I’m in the right place at the right time” Strong stated. “In Hawaii, we’d call it mana.”

Dust Volume 6, Number 7
Tumblr media
Stars Like Fleas
The summer rolls on in a very peculiar way, with masks and zoom calls and brief, furtive trips to the grocery and the growing realization that normal is months, if not years, away.  Even so, the music remains excellent. Thank god it’s downloadable and accessible even in these strange days we inhabit. Here writers including Bill Meyer, Jennifer Kelly, Jonathan Shaw, Ian Mathers, Justin Cober-Lake and Ray Garraty consider improvised drone, precocious alt.country, experimental banjo tunes, rap metal and jazz.  Enjoy.
75 Dollar Bill — Live at Café Oto (75 Dollar Bill’s Social Music series)
Live at Cafe OTO by 75 Dollar Bill
Before 75 Dollar Bill put out those widely revered LPs for Thin Wrist records, Che Chen and Rick Brown made a series of tapes. You could pick them up at shows, packaged in a clamshell case with a business card advertising their services. 2020 is a plague year, so it’s going to be a while before anyone hires them for another party or a parade, but this download-only release fulfills similar functions. It captures the band at a particular moment in time, and it gives you a chance to throw a few bucks their way. Do so and you probably won’t be sorry, because the late 2019 tour documented by Live at Café Oto was unique in 75 Dollar Bill’s history. Chen and Brown did the whole run of shows with double bassist Andrew Lafkas, but they also did nearly all of them without essential gear. It wasn’t until near the end, when they played in England, that Brown was reunited with the big wooden box that is his main percussive instrument. Spread across three sets, this three-hour long album shows how swell they sound when they’ve got a committed agent of swing adding his subtle shift to their Bo Diddley meets Mauritanian wedding music groove. If you know I Was Real, you’ll recognize many of these tunes, and you’ll likely appreciate the differences that 75 Dollar Bill works and reworks upon them.
Bill Meyer
Bandgang Lonnie Bands \ Bandgang Javar – The Scamily (TF Entertainment \ Empire)
youtube
After Bandgang broke up, Lonnie Bands made a successful solo career. His only misfortune, apart from a murder rap prosecutors tried to stick him with, was that he picked up a no-talent partner Javar. Here, surrounded by aggressive but undistinguished artists Mascoe and Paid Will, Lonnie hasn’t learned lesson. Thankfully, Javar makes his presence on The Scamily scarce, and the second half is basically Lonnie’s solo effort with some guests. As usual, Lonnie makes himself busy in illegal activities: drugs, scams, pimping, firearms. He neatly sums up his bad deeds on “Me Too”: “You on that bullshit? Me too.” The Scamily is not that focused as last year’s KOD but Lonnie, with his slick rhyming and catchy hooks, always reinvents a bad man’s lexicon.
Ray Garraty
Sammy Brue — Crash Test Kid (New West)
youtube
Sammy Brue is no longer quite the wunderkind he was when he released his first full-length at 15, but he is still quite impressive here on the follow-up, hitching the spit and fire and wordy angst of, say, Ezra Furman, to the downhome pyrotechnics of Bob Log III. “Teenage Mayhem” explodes with teenage aggression, building out a twitchy blues riff into a monumental rock chorus, while “Crash Test Kid,” is softer sonically, but just as unflinching in its narrative. “Skatepark Doomsday Blues” is epic and grandiose but carries it off, infusing an old man’s blues progressions with the eruptive feelings of young manhood. All the signs point towards Brue growing into his art. He’s already channeling raw emotion into sharp song structures and lyrics without sacrificing their force. It’s a drag getting old, but it doesn’t have to be a step back.
Jennifer Kelly
John Butcher — On Being Observed (Weight of Wax)
On Being Observed by John Butcher
English saxophonist John Butcher has a deep and diverse discography, much of it on CD. Since the standard of his playing is so high, and the settings and accompanists he selects so diverse, they’ve never been merely about documentation; you’d have to look hard to find a dud on the shelves. But as format preferences, economic shifts, and that damned virus turn everything upside down, Butcher has, like everyone else, found himself suddenly with plenty of time to comb through the hard drives and reassess the music stored there. And since CD manufacturing and distribution has been snarled up worldwide, what better time to transfer some of it straight to yours? On Being Observed comprises six solo performances recorded between 2000 and 2006, and you could not ask for a better introduction to what he does on his own. It features him in the studio, at a jazz festival, and in some unusual acoustic environments which afford a number of ways to understand what it means to read the room. Whether he’s playing to an audience or a 20 second delay in a dis-used gas storage facility, acoustically or amplified, using a soprano or tenor sax, Butcher’s tone is unmistakable, and his sense of how long to develop ideas and how to develop them is peerless.

Carling & Will — Soon Comes Night (self-released)
youtube
Carling & Will (banjo player Carling Berkhout and multi-instrumentalist William Seeders Mosheim) have spent the last few years working out new twists on old-time music. Their debut album Soon Comes Night takes another a step forward from their previous, more traditional sound. Much of the album relies on the interplay of banjo and electric guitar. The pair don't go for outre sounds, but Mosheim provides textures for Berkhout's banjo playing. “Lillie's Lullaby” offers a highlight, not only in its prettiness, but in its revelation of Berkhout's idiosyncracies as she shifts in and out of more typical patterns. The album in itself makes for a lovely collection of songs, but it has both the ups and downs of an act starting to find itself. Carling & Will have a distinct voice, and the more they work to develop that (probably by letting Berkhout get odder and Mosheim explore his voicings a little), the more impressive they'll become. If the pair decides to just focus on smaller updates to mountain music, they've already shown a worthy artistry in that.

 Cloud Rat — “Faster” (Self-released)
Faster by Cloud Rat
Like a lot of us, the folks in Cloud Rat have been cooped up behind walls, watching the world burn. But that hasn’t stopped them from making some terrific music. This new track, “Faster,” has been posted to Bandcamp as a benefit for Black Lives Matter-aligned organizations. The song is somewhat in the mode of their most recent EP, Do Not Let Me off the Cliff (2019). That record traded in the band’s characteristic grindpunk intensities for some weirdo experiments in dreampop, noise and gauzy gothic nightmare soundtracks. “Faster” isn’t quite as far out there, and longtime listeners of the band will recognize some of the textures of tracks like “Moksha,” “Raccoon” and “Luminescent Cellar.” The song starts and ends with some lovely acoustic finger-picking by guest musician Andy Gibbs of Thou. In between, there are clean vocals by Madison Marshall that border on the ethereal, and electric riffs that build and build toward majestic heights. Good cause, great tune.

Drakeo the Ruler – Thank You for Using GTL (Stinc Team)
youtube
Recorded through a phone line from prison, with beats later provided by JoogSZN, Thank You For Using GTL right after its release was named best prison album since Penitentiary Chances, by now classic joint effort by C-Murder (still incarcerated) and Boosie Badazz (now free). It was too strong a claim to be true. On that duo’s album you can hear a sense of doom hanging over them. When all hope is lost, there is only a prayer, and even that can get lost on its way to God. There was no tomorrow. Drakeo the Ruler, on the other hand, raps like there is tomorrow. Even rough sound of voice recording and “This call is being recorded” tags are more like a necessary sound effect and a gimmick rather than an effect of reality (he couldn’t do it any other way). Strip this tape of all these effects, and you end up with an ordinary rap album, exactly like others released by dozens every week. Maybe there is no reason to thank GTL. It did us a disservice.

Holy Hive — Float Back to You (Big Crown)
youtube
These super laid back funk soul cuts stay well inside the pocket, except when they veer unexpectedly into indie-folk. The funk parts come from one-time Dap King Homer Steinweiss, whose loose but transcendent way with a groove can be best heard on “Hypnosis.” Paul Spring, the singer, brings in the psychedelic falsetto, more Justin Vernon than Curtis Mayfield, but still radiant and chilling. The title track plays like a lost 78 soul classic, Spring’s mournful melody wafting skyward as big loopy bass notes and splayed jazz guitar chords drop into a slink and strut of snare drum. That’s maybe what you’d expect from Steinweiss’ Brooklyn soul revivalist resume, but elsewhere, there are surprises. “Red Is the Rose” sounds like Tunng, all space-bopped folk magic and electro-pinging drums, and “Be Thou By My Side” is lattice-picked folk without the slightest hint of syncopation. Both sides of Holy Hive have their sweetness, but only the funk stuff buries a stinger.

Dustin Laurenzi’s Snaketime — Behold (Astral Spirits)
Behold by Dustin Laurenzi
Here’s an irony for you. Composer Louis Hardin, whose habit of dressing up like a Viking and hawking his wares on the streets of mid-20th century NYC turned him into a bona fide attraction, may have conversed with jazz musicians, and shared a record label or two with them. But he didn’t really like jazz. Nonetheless, jazz musicians liked his music back, and they still do. The melodies are graceful, but malleable, and the Bach-meets-powwow rhythms have plenty of productive implications for a percussionist willing to work between the lines. After years of study Chicago-based tenor saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi formed Snaketime, a project named after one of the composer’s rhythmic notions, that turned seven of his compatriots loose upon the Moondog book. Maybe loose isn’t quite the right word, since Laurenzi’s arrangements show deep respect for the original melodies and their exotic vibe. But there’s not a lot of music that can’t be made a bit better when you ask bass clarinetist Jason Stein to improvise from its foundations. This half-hour long tape adds four tunes to the seven on last year’s excellent LP Snaketime: The Music of Moondog, and any one of them could have made the cut if Laurenzi had been given enough rope to make a it a double album in the first place.

 MachineGum — Conduit (Frenchkiss)
Like its Pepto-Bismol-pink cover, these songs seem a bit over-sweet and undernourishing at first, but damned if their synth and disco and art-rock grooves didn’t start to catch on after a few listens. The project, launched in New York City with the mysterious appearance of pink gum machines, is not what you’d expect from a Strokes offshoot, but give Fabrizio Moretti credit for branching out. Here tight, “O Please”’s sleek, wah-wah’d guitars and fat-fingered bass throws off a funk shimmy, but soft, dream-y choruses add an element of electro-pop introspection. “Act of Contrition,” by contrast, swells and swirls with gothy new wave drama, but also vibrates with indie earnestness; it’s like the National playing a New Order cover. If you’d told me a month ago, that I’d be enjoying a super clean, super precise synth-dance album by a member of the Strokes, I’d have laughed, but here we are.

 Phosphene — Lotus Eaters (Self-Release)
Lotus Eaters by Phosphene
Portland’s Phosphene drifts and drones in a satisfying vintage 4AD-ish way, the serene vocals of Rachel Frankel wafting out over intricate tangles of shoe-gazey guitars as Matthew Hemmerich pounds out motorik rhythms on the kit. This album, the band’s second, was written in the turbulent aftermath of the 2016 election, but it exudes a murky calm. In “Carousel,” for example, Frankel sings about how “everyone gets lost in their own power,” but the temperature remains cool, dream-like, lit by arcs of guitar sound and undergirded by a thudding mantra of bass (Kevin Kaw). The two singles run closest to pop. Bright, upbeat “Cocoon” is spiked with Spoon-ish piano chords, while “The Wave” damn near bubbles with girl pop exuberance. I can see why they’re leaning on those cuts, but I like the cloudy radiance of “Seven Ways,” the morose moods of “The Body” better.

Sara Schoenbeck / Wayne Horvitz — Cell Walk (Songlines)
Cell Walk by Wayne Horvitz/Sara Schoenbeck
Bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck and pianist Wayne Horvitz built to their first duo release slowly. They've been playing together since the previous decade in Horvitz's Gravitas Quartet, working together in various styles. The bassoon doesn't necessarily lend itself to jazz, but Schoenbeck's experience with artists like Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton — as well as in various orchestras and symphonies — has revealed her fluency in different languages. Horvitz and Schoenbeck develop that approach on Cell Walk, mixing composed and improvised tracks, moving from jazz to classical and back again, happily residing in a new music space. The pair's chamber background comes to the fore more than anything else, but the artists' experimental ideas and Horvitz's occasional electronics keep the duo moving forward. The album mostly stays cool, although a few tempo shifts and Schoenbeck's varied tone create unexpected energy any time the disc starts to settle. Schoenbeck and Horvitz fill an unlikely niche, but they also make a good case for expanding it.

R.E. Seraphin — Tiny Shapes (Paisley Shirt)
Tiny Shapes by R.E. Seraphin
Ray Seraphin makes sweet, sharp songs out of guitar jangle and whispers that seem to nestle right in your ear. His first cassette under his own name after a stint in the slightly more abrasive Talkies kicks up a power pop dust and haze a la Luna or, more recently, Plates of Cake. Like these bands, however, he envelops smart, coiling melodies and wild spiralling guitar hijinks in daydreaming inchoate jangles. In “Streetlight,” Seraphin vamps and caroms in spike-y mid-temperature anthemry, crooning “And I won’t feel a thing,” and indeed there’s a misty, nostalgic remove around most of this album’s emotional content. Yet there’s also a classic pop shape that can’t quite be obscured by muttered, offhand delivery. “Fortuna” is the best bit, to my ears, a summer radio megahit heard from several rooms away, bittersweet and slipping away even as it plays.

Stars Like Fleas — DWARS Session: Live on Radio VPRO (Amsterdam) (self released)
DWARS Session: Live on Radio VPRO (Amsterdam) by Stars Like Fleas
New York collective Stars Like Fleas are still gone, but the tracers and streamers left in the air by their passing continue to be entrancing. Whatever collapsed in the wake of their work on the follow up to their epochal LP The Ken Burns Effect can perhaps be glimpsed a little in the bulk of this first (and hopefully not last) release from what they describe as “a huge archive of live and session material.” As the title indicates, six of the 11 tracks here come from a radio session they did during their final tour (coming apart and leaving the final album unfinished upon their return to America). Along with a couple of Ken Burns highlights that session is all new material and it is as rich as anything they released during their lifetime. The collection is rounded out with some brief improvisations and another track intended for the final album, the 7” single “End Times”, and a wonderful performance of “Falstaff” from a Toronto show. Perversely and beautifully enough, the result is not only a must listen for fans of the group, it makes an excellent introduction for anyone who missed them the first time. Bring on the archives!

 Thecodontion — Supercontinent (I, Voidhanger)
Supercontinent by Thecodontion
A death metal band entirely devoted to songs about ancient, paleolithic lifeforms and geological history? It’s not the most harebrained musical concept you may have heard — it even makes a sort of sense. What better musical genre to address such massive, atavistic and lumbering forms? Supercontinent is the Italian duo’s first LP, following 2019’s Jurassic EP. As its title suggests, this new Thecodontion record goes way, way back, to primal landforms, before continental drift assembled the earthball’s map into its current shape. Appropriately, the longest track on Supercontinent is “Pangaea,” named for the unimaginably huge late Paleozoic landmass. Thecodontion’s featured instrument is Giuseppe D’Adiutorio’s bass, which he variously thrums, hammers and shreds. He gets some pretty amazing sounds out of it, sometimes producing the soaring, moaning, keening sounds that Greg Lake coaxed out of his bass on the early King Crimson recordings. The proggy reference is pointed; Thecodontion’s high concept project smacks of prog’s grandiosity. But where prog shoots for the heavens, Thecodontion goes bone hunting. It’s interesting work.

Various Artists — Building A Better Reality: A Benefit Compilation (JMY)
Building A Better Reality : A Benefit Compilation by Various Artists
As Bandcamp’s choice to waive its portion of transaction proceeds in favor or certain needs and causes has evolved from an occasional to a monthly event, releases have started to appear which take advantage of both the event and the rapidity of production when no physical objects are being produced. George Floyd died under a policeman’s knee on May 25; this compilation was released just 24 days later, on Juneteenth. Brent Gutzeit of TV Pow secured 106 contributions from friends, friends of friends, and customers of friends — and that’s just the parties that this writer recognizes. They range in length from Kendraplex’s 58 seconds of metallic shredding to Joshua Abrams’ half hour of mournful clarinet and cathartic double bass. You’ll find acoustic protest music, swinging jazz, harsh noise, hip-hop, and a sound collage that includes sounds of protest and mourning. The participants include Simon Joyner, Jsun Borne, I Kong Kult, Jesse Goin, Chris Brokaw, AZITA, Keith Fullerton Whitman, and the Jeb Bishop Trio, along with many, many more. Have I listened to them all yet? Of course not! But the thing with a set like this is that you don’t need to. Put it into your shuffle play and it’ll yield surprises for years to come. Income goes to Black Lives Matter, NAACP Legal Defense Fund. and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Michael Vincent Waller — A Song (Longform Editions)
A Song by Michael Vincent Waller
At first listen, you might not guess that composer Michael Vincent Waller’s new EP/song A Song is an improvised piece, and as the surrounding material on Bandcamp makes clear, that’s kind of part of the point. Composition vs. improvisation is the kind of duality where both sides are never really distinct, and Waller is both interested in the history of composers improvising and (possibly naturally) improvises in a way that’s not a million miles away from his compositions. Which also means that just on that first listen the 21 minutes of solo piano found here are frequently beautiful, whether patiently probing a set of arpeggios or momentarily going somewhere a bit darker and deeper near the end. Whether considered as work done around or between more composed ones or in its own right, A Song makes for both a fine follow up to Waller’s 2019 collection Moments and a brief thesis on the always permeable boundary between two methods of creation.

Remember all that teen angst, anguish & energy?
… if you do Remote Control should be right up your street. Formed in Richmond Virginia at the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Remote Control features members of Sea of Storms, Landmines, Fire in the Radio, The Possibilities, Sixer and Nutria, with Bob Spires on lead vox & guitar, Casey Martin bass & vox, Adam Caldwell drums and Nick Bergheimer guitar.
Confronting the woolly mammoth in the room, the dread P-word surfaces in their bio/write-ups (much to Plunger’s horror, as you’d expect). But as George Bernard Shaw almost said, “Britain and America are two nations separated by a common misunderstanding of the word ‘Punk’…” In the UK, it defines performers with a full realisation of their total lack of musical talent or aptitude combined with a burning desire to flaunt that lack to anyone and everyone, most likely in the back room of a South London pub or northern Legion Hall; whereas the US seems to use ‘punk’ to describe anything a bit raw or boisterous. That’s Remote Control to a T: Black Flag/Green Day (other colour/noun combinations are probably available) hi-energy-skatepark-cargo-short-garage-rock something or other…
Five singles, released over the past couple of months, range from the insistent snare-driven Blow For Blow - crash-heavy drums, churning bass and snarled vocals matched with Beat-combo harmonies and progressions (like The Jam with balls); the They-Might-Be-Giants-on-steroids meaty riffing and whimsical melody of Hope For Days; and a short, sharp, savage Annihilate, the bass at its diaphragm-flapping lowest, drums at their most frenetic, and vitriol-slathered vocals like skater Daleks (although thinking about it, Daleks technically always were skaters, really) with stinging guitar and a frenzied finale.
Get Up is a proper pogoing, air-punching, shout-along, rebel-rousing teen anthem (a Malcolm In The Middle-for-the-gritty-2020s theme, that includes an incongruous break out for Adam’s ride-cymbal and a slightly unsettling guitar-solo-for-a-different-tune). Plunger’s pick of the pack is Take Me Back, a Blink 182-meets-The Beach Boys (Nu Surf?) mix of grinding bass lines, stoner fuzz, and sunny harmony / counterpoint vocals all taken at a more relaxed pace than the breakneck helter-skelter of the other four.
Even as ardent anti-punks Plunger get a kick out of Remote Control, and you have to admit if you’ve got to relive being an angry teen anywhere then Richmond, VA beats Richmond, N Yorks hands down.
Remote Control’s singles are available for purchase (or streaming, you cheapskate) on Bandcamp - as it’s another Bandcamp Friday with waived fees why not download all five (Plunger did).

[CN] Shaw’s 2021 Birthday R&S
🍒 Warning: This post contains detailed spoilers for an R&S which has not been released in EN! 🍒
Knowledge of Shaw’s 2020 Birthday R&S is highly recommended before reading this!
Tumblr media
[ This R&S was released on 16 June 2021 ]
[ Chapter One ]
This is the fifth month that Shaw is learning how to skateboard. The little buddies who started out with him had given up one after the other because they couldn’t endure the bitter taste of tripping and falling. In the end, he’s the only one left.
The wheels grate against the ground in a regular rhythm. Leaping over the obstacle, it makes a swerve, accelerates, and flips... the skateboard is lithe and graceful beneath Shaw’s feet, akin to a reed leaf as it brings him into the largest skatepark in Loveland City with a wilful rush.
“Shaw! Shaw!”
Shaw halts the skateboard and turns around.
A little fatty with a band-aid on his knee walks over, smiling and revealing his missing front teeth. “Finally found you.”
Shaw laughs scornfully. “Why’s a defeated opponent looking for me? Do you want to lose the remaining half of your front teeth?”
“You!” Little Fatty flushes red in an instant. He straightens his neck and points to an area behind him. “I’m not competing with you. Someone else wants to!”
Shaw looks in the direction of his finger. A boy who is obviously taller than him by a head smiles at him, the skateboard beneath his feet sliding back and forth. At a glance, it’s clear that he’s experienced.
“My Bro Zhou is in the Loveland City Qing Xun Team,” Little Fatty hugs his arms with pride, as though he’s the one in the team. “So? Dare to accept it?”
So that’s how it is. He’s a scaredy cat who only dares to call in reinforcements.
Shaw purses his lips. He steps on the tail of the skateboard, and it responds by flipping upwards, the the edge of the board landing steadily in his palm. “Why not? What are we competing in?”
Bro Zhou shrugs. “I won’t make things hard for newbies. We’ll compete in tic-tacs and going over obstacles. How’s that?”
“Sure.”
[Trivia] Tic-tacs are a series of consecutive heelside-to-toeside kickturns where your feet remain on the skateboard. I copied this from Google and have no idea what it means LOL
-
THUD-
Losing his balance for just a moment, Shaw falls heavily onto the ground. His knees, elbows... waves of pain bloom on every joint. It isn’t a good feeling, but what makes Shaw even more frustrated is the arrogant laughter of Little Fatty. t’s even noisier than the cicadas from afar.
“HAHAHAHA Shaw lost! Let’s see if you still have the guts to be proud!”
He has a lot to say despite being a noob. Shaw rolls his eyes. Enduring the pain, he’s just about to lift himself up by the elbows when Bro Zhou walks over to him, offering him a hand. “Not bad.”
“Thanks.”
The other party continues. “But at your age, it’s best to stick to the basics. There’s no hurry to learn high difficulty moves like the dolphin flip. You’ll definitely fall.”
Shaw’s expression immediately turns cold. “I don’t need your pointers on what I can learn at whatever age.” He doesn’t touch the hand, standing up by himself. Lifting his head, he gives the other party a look over. “Do you come here often?”
“The Qing Xun Team practises here every day.”
“Okay. Next time, I’ll definitely win against you.”
Shaw doesn’t bother about the expressions on Bro Zhou’s and the Little Fatty’s faces after hearing his words. He casually pats off the dust on his body, picks up the skateboard which is flipped over on the floor, and leaves the skatepark.
-
[ Chapter Two ]
The moment Shaw enters through the doors of the antique store, the Old Man’s uproar begins. “Little Ancestor, did you wreck havoc in the Heavenly Palace again?”
[Note] Here, the Old Man calls Shaw “小祖宗”, which literally means “Little Ancestor”. This term is used in an affectionate way to address a naughty child
“Wrecking havoc in the Heavenly Palace” is a reference to a novel called Journey to the West (西游记), which features a troublemaking Monkey King Sun Wukong
“I’m hungry. What’s there to eat today?” Shaw doesn’t respond to the shopkeeper’s words. Placing his bag and skateboard behind the counter, he reaches out to play with the silly parrot at the entrance - it’s truly silly. Even after teaching it for a month, it can’t even say “welcome to the shop”. It causes Shaw to wonder if the Old Man was perhaps duped of his money once again.
“All you know how to do is eat...” The Old Man sets down the ancient text in his hands and props up his presbyopic glasses. “Old Qian from next door boiled chicken soup today and is giving us half. I’ll stir-fry two dishes. You can ask if the chicken soup is ready.”
Shaw makes an “mm” of acknowledgement, then turns around and heads next door.
The shopkeeper gets up and takes a few steps towards the kitchen. Then, he abruptly returns to the counter, reaching out to touch the coarse scratch marks at the edge of the skateboard. Inexplicably, he sighs.
The chicken soup is a little bland, and the stir-fried dishes are a little salty. Mixing and eating them together is just nice. Shaw lowers his head and pushes rice into his mouth with chopsticks. In his left ear, he hears the news of how the GDP of Loveland City has risen. In his right ear, he hears the nagging of his mentor:
“...I’m not discouraging you from playing with this thing. It’s good to toughen yourself up while you’re young and your bones and muscles are sturdy. But don’t be too rash. This... this thing of yours...”
“Skateboard.” Shaw speaks.
“Yes, skateboard. I remember that it’s only been a month since it was bought, and it’s already tormented to such a state. You have such an impulsive temperament. You should be more level-headed.”
What does this have to do with temperament? If I were to truly be impulsive, I wouldn’t need a month. Just three days would be enough to break a skateboard. Shaw looks at the chicken leg in his bowl, not saying these words aloud.
“Also, remember to report to the shop early tomorrow. Old Qian and I are preparing to head to the neighbouring city to look for goods. You should come along to broaden your horizons.” The shopkeeper taps his chopsticks against the rim of the bowl, signalling for Shaw to pay more attention. “Isn’t it your birthday tomorrow? I could pick out a gift for you! Sigh, I actually had my eye on an agate snuff bottle, but the guy suddenly decided not to sell it...”
“I’m not going tomorrow.” Shaw interrupts the shopkeeper.
The shopkeeper furrows his brows. “Why are you throwing a tantrum?”
“I’m not. I have proper business to attend to tomorrow. The school organised a visit to the museum.” Shaw lifts his eyes, and his thin lips curve upwards. “The things I see there will be much more valuable than those trivial things you fiddle with.”
“You little rascal!”
Shaw laughs, wedging the chicken leg between his chopsticks and sending it into his mentor’s bowl. “I’m full, so I’m heading to the back to do my homework. Chicken legs are really nutritious, so you should have it.”
“Tsk tsk, and you still said you weren’t throwing a tantrum. You aren’t going home again?”
“I don’t want to go back today. I’ll definitely go back tomorrow.” Shaw has already walked to the entrance. He suddenly thinks of something, and turns his head to ask a question. “Mentor, your shop will always be open, right?”
These words came out of nowhere, and the shopkeeper isn’t able to comprehend them. “What?”
“Nothing much. I’m just worried that I won’t have a place to have dinner if an old man like you were to throw in the towel someday.”
The shopkeeper fumes with a glare. “What do you mean by that? You only care about the food? Also, my shop can continue running for a decade or two. I’m still waiting for you to bring back a disciple or a wife to serve me tea!”
Shaw lets out an “oh”, and his eyes crinkle. “In that case, you’ll have to wait for another twenty or thirty years.”
The eyesight of the shopkeeper is no longer as good as before, but he can clearly see that the smile of this child didn’t reach his eyes. After Shaw leaves, he suddenly recalls the fortune that he drew for Shaw half a year ago: “What awaits this catastrophe is a new beginning...”
This child is will meet his predestined fate this year, so what’s left is to see how he endures through it. The shopkeeper shakes his head, sighing once again.
[Note] The actual fortune is “河图数九,洛书数七,脐于九陵,七日来复” but I don’t have the energy to explain it so what I’ve translated above is the overall meaning :>
-
[ Chapter Three ]
When Shaw awakens on the next day, the shopkeeper has already left to inspect the goods. The shop is empty, and he’s the only one left.
Westmoon Street is lined with old houses, and there’s no soundproofing. Lying on the bed, Shaw can hear the chirping of birds outside the window, the yelling of people on the street, and the babble of the Chinese opera from the old bookstore next door: “I’m just like a caged bird with wings that can’t be outstretched. I’m just like a shallow water dragon trapped on a beach...”
Shaw rubs his face, then sits up on the bed.
The school had set the assembling time to be 9am. Heading out now will give him more than enough time. Shaw quickly washes his face and rinses his mouth. Just as he walks towards the front counter with some rice grains from the kitchen for the parrot to eat, he suddenly discovers that there’s something on the counter.
Walking over, Shaw sees that there’s a cake box as well as a t-shirt which has been washed clean.
There’s a slip of paper on the shirt. The strokes are clean and thin. At a glance, he knows that this is the Old Man’s handwriting: You need energy and drive to participate in the school activity. Don’t wear yesterday’s dirty clothes. Change into this.
The shirt look slightly familiar. He probably changed out of it one day and forgot about it, leaving it in the antique shop. Shaw pays it no mind, turning his head to that small cake once again. The various calligraphy and writings in the antique store are considered relatively charming. Yet, why does he always buy such unsophisticated cakes?
When his classmates celebrate their birthdays, what they eat are high quality custom-made cakes - red velvet, matcha crepe, chocolate molten lava... such a traditional longevity cake is probably found only in a place like Westmoon Street. It’s clear from the light red and light green colours that the embellishments on the cake were made by hand. Eating it would definitely dye his tongue. If he were to speak later, wouldn’t he get laughed at by his classmates?
Shaw bunches up his brows, but the fork in his hand doesn’t stop. The cream is plant-based and tastes bad. He eats a small egg shell at the base of the cake and it tastes bad. The “Happy Birthday” was written using peach jam, and it tastes really bad.
The silly parrot at the side tilts its head, watching as the boy eats mouthfuls while shunning it with every bite, finishing the cake entirely.
Shaw wipes his mouth, then rinses it with the barley tea on the table. Picking up that t-shirt, he returns into the house and changes his clothes.
-
[ Chapter Four ]
“...this ‘Painting of the Elevated and Pre-eminent’ depicts four famous scholars enjoying themselves. Students, do you know who the Seven Sages of the bamboo forest are?”
[Trivia] If you’re interested in seeing the actual painting, search for “高逸图” (“gao yi tu”)
“It’s such a waste that you didn’t watch yesterday’s episode. That scene where the main lead destroyed the opponent like a boss is unparalleled!”
“Aside from the both of us, did anyone else have fun at Anime City?”
“Are you done with the math homework? Lend it to me - I’ll find a place to copy it.”
...
The question posed by the museum guide is drowned out amidst the laughing and frolicking of the kids. He forces a smile while shaking his head. All of a sudden, he notices that a boy with bluish purple hair isn’t the same as the other kids. He’s staring at an ancient painting in the showcase, lost in thought.
Tumblr media
As though seeing a saviour, the guide quickly points at him. “Student, why don’t you give me an answer? It’s fine even if you get it wrong. Uncle will explain to you!”
“...” Shaw turns his head, opening his mouth to say some words, but his voice doesn’t reach the guide’s ears.
“Student, what did you say?” The guide raises his volume.
“I said that the four people in ‘Painting of the Elevated and Pre-eminent’ are Shan Tao, Wang Jie, Liu Ling and Ruan Ji.” Shaw’s face is pretty much expressionless, and there aren't many fluctuations in his tone. “The one sitting down with his hands on his knees at the far right is Shan Tao. The one holding the ruyi sceptre is Wang Tao. The one next to him and drinking wine is Liu Ling. A boy is serving him. The one at the far left needs no mention - he’s the first of the Sages, Ruan Ji. So this painting is missing Ji Tang, Xiang Xiu and Ruan Xian.”
“...”
The surroundings gradually quieten down, and only Shaw’s voice echoes in front of the showcase.
"The scholars in this painting evoke a refined and tasteful sentiment, and the lines are beautiful. This is an extremely precious treasure in the realm of silk scrolls. This is why the ‘Painting of the Elevated and Pre-eminent’ has always been kept in the royal palace. It’s a pity that in order for our predecessors to avoid taboos, only Si Ma Zhong’s inscription is left on it.”
The youth lifts his chin, shooting a playful smile at the guide. “Okay Uncle, you can explain the next museum piece now.”
“Shaw, you’re incredible!” His classmates flock over to him, bumping him on the shoulders. “You were staring at that painting for such a long time. Did you memorise the words on the museum label?”
“Tch. These’s no need to memorise the museum labels for such things. You’ll know it from a glance.” Shaw laughs. “Also, I wasn’t looking at this painting...” When he says this, he pauses for a moment, swallowing his words.
If he wasn’t looking at this painting, which one was he looking at? The students follow Shaw’s gaze, and realise that there’s a floral painting hanging next to the “Painting of the Elevated and Pre-eminent”.
“Painting of a Courtyard and Dayliles”, Northern Song Dynasty, Xuan He Imperial Art Academy, anonymous... The students read the explanatory note on the museum label.
[Trivia] If you’re interested in seeing the actual painting, search for “霜庭萱草图” (“shuang ting xuan cao tu”)
The painting seems to depict a corner of a courtyard. A few daylilies display the patterns on their leaves. One big and one small dragonfly are perched on the flower. Aside from that, there isn’t anything else interesting about it. This painting doesn’t seem to have a name or seal, neither does it have a detailed explanation. Even the guide skipped past it. Since it isn’t a rare and precious ancient painting, what exactly was Shaw looking at?
His classmates are a little puzzled.
-
[ Chapter Five ]
All the classes assemble in lines at the entrance of the museum. The teacher very patiently reminds the students not to forget to do their homework over the weekend, and to remember to write down their reflections about the museum. The students drawl out “got it”, but their hearts have long since flown a million miles away, ready to keep toys and snacks company.
“Shaw!” After dispersing, Shaw’s classmates wave at him.
Shaw walks over. “What’s up?”
“All of us know that you aren’t in a good mood because you lost to a senior in skateboarding yesterday. Isn’t it your birthday? Bro Lu bought the newest game, so let’s head over to play at his place.” His classmate smiles while putting an arm around his shoulder.
“Who told you that I lost yesterday?” Shaw speaks coldly.
“Who else but Fatty? He was so proud yesterday.” The classmate gives Shaw a pat. “Relax, we’re on your side. Don’t think about these unhappy things. Next time, we’ll have lots of opportunities to get revenge...”
“If I wanted revenge, I wouldn’t wait till next time.” Shaw purses his lips. “I’m heading to the skatepark now. You guys coming?”
-
Since it’s the weekend, quite a number of skateboard hobbyists are already practising by the time Shaw reaches the skatepark. Very quickly, he locates Bro Zhou from yesterday.
Shaw gets straight to the point. “I lost yesterday. Today, I want to have a race with you. Do you accept?”
A hint of shock is in Bro Zhou’s eyes. He has probably never met a kid who is this unwilling to lose. “You fell so badly yesterday but still want to compete with me? You should practise more!”
“There’s no need to practise more when competing with you,” Shaw says.
With this, Bro Zhou’s temper starts to flare. He tilts his chin. “Fine, come on. Just don’t cry if you fall and break your arm today.”
A short while later, the news of how a “junior high school newbie dared to challenge Bro Zhou from the Qing Xun Team” spreads throughout the skatepark. Everyone gathers at both sides of the race course, curiously sizing up the main lead for today.
“S-Shaw...” His classmate pulls on Shaw’s arm. Looking at the deep bowl in front, he gulps. “Are you sure you’re competing with him in this? It won’t be good news if you fall!”
“If I want to play, of course I’ll only play the fun stuff. Just watch.”
Shaw walks to the starting line and takes a deep breath. When moving his limbs, his hand subconsciously touches the hem of the t-shirt - there’s a small Chinese trumpet vine. The green leaves and red petals cover the hole which was originally on the shirt. It’s just that the stitches are crooked, and it’s incredibly crude. At a glance, it’s clear that it wasn’t sewn by someone familiar with needlework.
[Fun fact] Chinese trumpet vine is 凌霄花 (“ling xiao hua”)
Shaw’s name in CN is 凌肖 (“ling xiao”)
Mentor is the best <3
He bites his lower lip.
The referee raises both hands. “The old rules apply. After getting past the Cola can obstacles, cross the bowl. The first person who reaches the goal will win. Ready... go!”
In the midst of a clamour, a bluish purple light rushes forward, taking the lead.
-
[ Chapter Six ]
The friction of wheels against the ground results in ear-piercing screeches. The skateboard brings Shaw forward at a high speed, and the cold strong wind accompanies the summer heat waves, brushing past his cheeks. The upright Cola cans aren’t enough to faze him. With the continuous twisting of his waist and a skateboard which moves naturally like flowing water, he and his opponent seem to bypass the obstacles comprising of twelve Cola cans at the same time-
There are three consecutive rows of Cola can structures in front of him. He has to use all sorts of techniques to jump over them. That way, he can rush down the bowl, and enter the final stage.
The arm he injured from the fall yesterday is still aching faintly. His feet seem to be protesting as well. He successfully jumps over the first row, the second row... Shaw holds his breath. He steps on the tail of the skateboard with his left foot. Gravity takes over quickly, and his right foot causes the skateboard to rise. The skateboard beneath his feet is akin to a flying fish jumping out of the water surface, creating a rotating arc above the Cola cans!
“It’s a dolphin flip!” Members of the audience exclaim.
Clack! Shaw’s shoulders wobble slightly when his feet return to the skateboard. When he finally stands steadily, he continues rushing forward. The final bowl is right in front of him.
The moment the skateboard dives downwards, Shaw feels a brief moment of weightlessness. This feeling is reminiscent of being thrown out of the entire world, making one want to continue falling like this until they plummet into the bottom of the swamp. The deep bowl is like the trough he’s currently going through. If he’s unable to climb out of the trough, he will drown in hatred, anger, powerlessness, disappointment... and lose to that weak heart of his.
But he’s Shaw, and he won’t lose just like that.
With a rapid dash, he soars upwards without trouble - underneath the brilliant blazing sun, the youth leaps out of the bowl!
After flying out of the bowl, the inertia causes Shaw to stumble a few steps. He falls onto the ground, lying on his back while pressing the finish line.
At the same time, he hears a dull thud from the bowl - his opponent had fallen back into it.
“Shaw won!” “Shaw reached the goal first!” “That rascal actually won against Bro Zhou?” “This competition was so awesome!” ...all sorts of voices emerge in the surroundings in a disorderly fashion, and a set of footsteps walk towards him.
“Your name’s Shaw?” A masculine voice asks from above his head.
Shaw doesn't speak.
“I’m Coach Wang from Loveland City’s Qing Xun Skateboarding Team,” that voice continues. “I see that you have lots of talent, and will make a good young successor. Are you interested in joining the Qing Xun Team?”
While saying this, a registration form is handed to him.
The late afternoon sun illuminates the sheet of paper, reflecting a glaring light akin to snow. Shaw takes one look at the registration form, then shifts his lips slightly. “I don’t want to.”
“Why not?”
“My shirt’s really expensive, so it isn’t worth tearing them.”
The coach is rendered speechless.
Just as he’s about to say a few more words to persuade the kid, he suddenly spots the small flower at the corner of Shaw’s shirt from his periphery - this is clearly not an expensive t-shirt. These days, few shirts are mended using embroidery. And the fact that he’s willing to wear it despite the clumsy embroidery...
This kid has family members whom he cares very much about. The coach seems to understand this. His lips open and shut, and he swallows back the lines he prepared. In the end, he simply says, “...that dolphin flip you did earlier wasn’t bad.”
“Of course.”
The coach laughs as he leaves. Amidst the cheers from the surroundings, Shaw lies on the ground. Covering his eyes with his hand, he laughs.
“I won. Happy birthday to me.”

Skate park fundraiser with Olympic skater raises $25K

Skate Essex, a nonprofit organization established to help local communities create safe skateboarding spaces and programs for children, held its first event last week — the Party 4 the Park, in Van Vleck Gardens.
Money raised at the Thursday, Oct. 7 event will be used toward the first phase of the Montclair Skate Park at Rand Park — the Alexis Sablone Skate-able Sculptures, referred to as “SsS” for short.
After a unanimous vote by Montclair’s mayor and township council in July on a resolution to build a permanent skate park in Montclair, Skate Essex is “riding fast and hard” to make that a reality, the group said in a description of the event. For almost two years, the skateboarders have been using two of the four courts at Rand Park as a temporary park.
“Skate Essex proudly raised over $25,000 on Thursday through donations from the community and will be putting that and grants towards the Alexis Sablone Skate-able Sculptures (SsS) and other expenses associated with the temporary and permanent park,” one of the event’s organizers, Holly Shaw, said.
SAVE MONTCLAIR LOCAL: We’re overjoyed to report we’ve hit our fundraising goal of $230,000 this quarter for Montclair Local Nonprofit News! Montclair has stepped up to say local news matters, and we’re hugely grateful. That gives our newsroom, your newsroom, security to operate well into 2022 while we continue to work toward long-term sustainability. We’ve seen what happens when news operations cut back or shut down. Communities suffer. We’ve seen it here in Montclair, and we believe you deserve better.
Visit MontclairLocal.news/donations to make your tax-deductible contribution today, to keep Montclair Local strong and help us do even more to serve the amazing community of Montclair.
The sold-out event featured a one-on-one interview with Sablone, who in addition to being an Olympic athlete (placing fourth in the women’s street final at the games in Tokyo earlier this year) — is an architect. She discussed being the sole female skater in her hometown, her love of architecture and the undeniable growth of skateboarding as a legitimate sport.
Party-goers enjoyed food donated by Turtle and the Wolf, Pineapple Express, Van Hook Cheese & Grocery and Solex Fine Foods, and drinks donated by Faubourg, Angelbecks and Les Ricey’s Imports. Drinks were served by celebrity bartender George Oliphant — Montclair resident and host of NBC’s “George to the Rescue.”
Many of the current obstacles at the courts are made of wood. These wooden elements rapidly deteriorate due to weather and constant use by the hundreds of skaters using them each week. In partnering with Sablone, Montclair aims to have one-of-a-kind skateboard obstacles made of concrete and steel.
These obstacles will not only last decades and be utilized in a future permanent skatepark, but would also elevate Montclair’s standing as a skateboarding destination, advocates of the park say.
With the money raised on Thursday, prior grants and a few pending, Skate Essex is looking to break ground in the next few months and have the sculptures at the courts ready for skating in the spring of 2022.

366 Days of Music - A Social Media Experiment
I began the year with an absurd and largely pointless resolution. This was partly my desire to rebel against the vacuous resolutions of losing weight, and giving up smoking. I wanted to commit to something daft. I decided to post a song on my Facebook page everyday for a year. So, the task was not entirely pointless. I also wanted to resist the way in which we have become accustomed to posting certain things on certain social media platforms. The occasional song on Facebook is appreciated. But a year of them. My wife said ‘people will unfriend you.’ Perhaps they would.
So it occurred to me that this would ultimately be a social experiment. Could I do the whole year? Would people become irritated with me? Would people enjoy the music? Would I start to pander to the taste of my audience? and also how many people would also acknowledge the project in real life.
Early I found that I was actually caring about my audience more than I had considered. I wanted to present a range of music so people would not get bored of the same types of artists. I did however commit to only posting songs I really liked. No fads, but songs I had committed to and enjoyed.
Early in January during the commute to work I had my music on shuffle and I listened to David Bowie’s cover of ‘ I know its going to happen Someday’...I hadn’t heard it for ages and I thought I must post this, but I already had another track in mind for that day. As a matter of coincidence I found out a few hours later that Bowie had died. A coincidence, and an oddity that I had not posted the song. But then everyone was posting Bowie’s music on Facebook... My experiment became lost in the sea of music I would scroll through in my feed. Within a few days it had all calmed down again. I continued.
By Day 40 my enthusiasm wavered and I queued up a few posts on Buffer so I could ride out the Chinese New Year holiday without forgetting to post. Over this period I got a few responses from friends. People were asking me about songs and some friends even took to posting a song or two also. It was at this moment that I had a peculiar thought. Why is there such reticence to share the music your love on Facebook in contrast to the pictures of our daily life, or favourite pop culture news, recipes, or political convictions? Facebook, again and again seems to be a platform of managed self presentation, not so much earnest and impassioned sharing. This is underlined even more when you try to resist the ways in which Facebook is used. i.e. for self display. Sharing music you love almost seems to be more intimate than family photos. Lets be honest here, those family photos are the ones you have selected, the selfies are the ones you have posed for numerous times - but I can’t do much about my love for 80′s Pop, Shoegazers, and Vanessa Carlton. I began to think. Is posting music too honest?
It was around this stage I embraced a sense of abandon. I am thinking less and less about my audience. This mirrored an experience I had at the skatepark where I had my spotify playing on random. A whole bunch of gnarly tracks which were great to skate to were flowing. Then suddenly Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ comes on. Not the sort of track one listens to at the skatepark? I decided to embrace it. If I can listen to Beyonce at the skatepark, I should cater even less to the Facebook audience and embrace the freedom that this project provides.
By day 50 I was in full swing. One friend had asked me to add all the tracks onto a Spotify playlist. It was good to get such feedback. The thing that I wasn’t enjoying was the fact that I was spending more time on Facebook than ever before. Using it consistently everyday made me use it even more than the simple posting of tracks. This was not my plan. I engaged in the project to disrupt the banality of Facebook not become more immersed. I was uncomfortable with this. By day 53 I got the tragic news that a friend had a freak accident and died. Social Media always seems most trivial at these times. But it was a lifeline in communicating with friends, and my late friend’s wife. Even so this was the moment that I wanted to leave Facebook. Social Media is not a place to mourn. It was my stubborn commitment to the music project that made me stay. I immersed myself in a few days of Jazz...It appears that my friends don't seem to like Jazz.
What happened after that is a little unclear. I continued until day 84, March 24. Then I just stopped outright. The project failed. and like so many new year’s resolutions it did not endure. I felt imprisoned by the task a totally ill at ease with Facebook. I remain on Facebook in an uneasy peace, mostly because I have too many research contacts through Facebook. I cant afford to lose these.
I had some great exchanges with people I seldom communicated with. people shared stories of tracks they really loved, or memories of songs. It was a fun experiment until it became a prison.
In order to complete the experiment and to document the task, I kept a list of all the songs I posted up to the end. Here they are. Farewell 2016.
