Day 25 : Santa (Free)

OM OM OOOOM ! Merry belated Christmas!

Being late has been a credo of mine this month. :P

First time drawing one of my favorite female characters of all time, and it just had to be Christmas-related? Oh well, Genjo had it worse dressed as a reindeer against his will in a certain scene. 😁

Some youkai children put rope on their own clothes to imitate Sharak's "tail", human children also do that. This trend makes Sharak and her army smile. Kids are all the same, no matter which species they are from. They all need special celebrations to help them forget the dangerous situation they're living from both sides. Protecting their future starts with protecting their smile.

Anyhow, i do hope some of my pics made several Saiyuki fans smile as well. I sure enjoyed drawing them, it was quite inspiring.

I made a happy-squeal when I saw her for the first time. I thought she was secretly a villain but I'm so glad she's not. She's pretty too.

Lady from Devil May Cry

How I could not include Lady? She's Lady! Another bad ass who keeps Dante in line.

Mizu from Blue Eye Samurai

I like to portray Mizu as nonbionary but in canon she's female. Still, Mizu is a genderless icon to me so I'm adding them.

Namaari from Raya & the Last Dragon

Badass warrior princess. I wish the movie had more focus on her rivalry with Raya. Namaarie has great potential as a character & deserved more screen time.

Their Journey So Far!

The Sanzo party has met a lot of colorful characters on their travels! It's been about 15 years since I've read the original Saiyuki manga, but even then, I couldn't fit every memorable character here

Yeah, Ukoku has an unhealthy obsession for Sanzo, our crow/raven has to be careful this time with the light of the Sun, because if he got his feathers black (he originally had the classic Sanzo robes then they turned black at least when he visited Hazel for the first time) next time he meets the Sun he might get burned down *evil laugh*

Ukoku takes all Buddhist concepts and doctrines (Sunyata, Heart Sutra, symbolism of black etc.) and reverses them in the most nihilistic way by voiding them of their salvific nature.

Sharak Sanzo is simply awesome, I love her to death and after watching the series I love her even more. I think that among Sanzo priests she is the one that resembles a Buddhist practitioner in many aspects for example her compassionate nature towards everyone (youkai and humans), the protective nature of he sutra that helps youkai to maintain their selves, her mother-like affection etc. I loved so much this scene:

Here she reminded me of a Bodhisattva. She rocks!

Month of Saiyuki (day 15)

Who is your favourite character in Saiyuki and why?

How can't you hate love him? On a more serious note he is one of few Anime/Manga villain that gives me genuine uncanny, dreadful feeling of despair and fear on a subtle level I rarely experienced if not in lovecraftian horror products. And the fight against Genjo proved what I felt...

I never thought that an apparently demented-looking mad scientist could hide such horrific power (Mutenkyo) and nature, he's a fine specimen when it comes to psychopathy or psychopathic traits mixed with narcissistic ones. Excellent individual to study and analyse, the concept he brings even from a Buddhist perspective is captivating, albeit he fully deserve the nickname "heretical" because of his embracing of Nihilism (one of the two extremes to avoid according to Buddhism), misuse of Mutenkyo (I hardly believe previous Sanzos of Mutenkyo lineage ever used the sutra the way he uses), the way he obtained the Sutra and other wicked visions of life. Considering that he's based on Usou Zenji (Crow’s Nest Zen Priest) the Ch'an Master who teaches Heart Sutra to Sanzang, his sutra might be, conceptually speaking, linked to Heart Sutra, my most favourite Mahayana sutra of all, so this makes Mutenkyo extremely interesting.

And it's extremely interesting how Ukoku reverses the deep meaning of both the fictional sutra and possible, real-life sutra in a more mundane and horrifying way that nullify everything and everyone. I still have to understand what truly happens to the victim that gets erased by the sutra's power because if it means the sutra erases the victim from existence as if they were never born, never remembered, this means (always in a Buddhist perspective) that even the Buddha nature present in every sentient being (in Buddhism a sentient being is a being that possesses a mind, sem chen in Tibetan) gets erased and with it the possibility potentially to transcend the conditions of saṃsāra and attain Buddhahood. If it's so, then it's enough to make a Bodhisattva shit bricks...

A very underrated villain, in my opinion, in the cosmos of Japanese fictional villain and more broadly in the villain scenario.
