Dizzy Reece: The Transcendent Voice of a Jazz Expatriate
Introduction: In the pantheon of jazz greats, some names shine brightly while others, despite their profound contributions, linger in the shadows of wider recognition. Alphonso “Dizzy” Reece belongs to the latter group—a brilliant yet often overlooked trumpeter and composer whose music remains a compelling blend of soul, intellect, and technical prowess. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, ninety-four…

Can you tell us more about James A Garfield and is there any media of him that you recommend? All I know is the book by Goodyear..
I always say that Garfield was one of the big "What if?" Presidents in American history had he not been assassinated. He was a fascinating character and could have been the transformational leader that propelled the United States through late-Reconstruction and the Gilded Age in ways that the other Presidents between Lincoln and McKinley were unable to do. Garfield was young (just 49 years old when he died), energetic, charismatic, absolutely brilliant, and aggressively progressive. He had ideas and the ability to implement them instead of simply being a steady hand. And, like JFK in a way, he brought his young, attractive family to the White House and that could have helped him lead the country in a different direction than his less engaging contemporaries who immediately preceded and succeeded him like Grant, Hayes, Arthur, Cleveland, and Benjamin Harrison. Garfield also had a somewhat mystical quality to him that I also believe would have captivated many Americans in an entirely new manner than most Presidents. The fact that he was only President for 199 days -- most of which were spent fighting for his life after he was shot -- is one of the great missed opportunities of American history.
For more on Garfield, the C.W. Goodyear biography that you mentioned, President Garfield: From Radical to Unified (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO), is the most recent (published in 2023) and fresh look at his life and career. But there are several others that I'd highly recommend checking out:
•Garfield by Allan Peskin (BOOK | KINDLE), was published in 1978 and, for many years, was the best, most in-depth full-fledged biography on Garfield. It's still a must-read, in my opinion. •Dark Horse: The Surprise Election and Political Murder of President James A. Garfield by Kenneth D. Ackerman (BOOK | KINDLE), was published in 2003, and is an excellent look at Garfield's shocking nomination and election in 1880, brief Presidency, and tragic assassination. •Touched With Fire: Five Presidents and the Civil War That Made Them by James M. Perry (BOOK | KINDLE), was also published in 2003. It's not a full biography of Garfield, but a look at the five Presidents who saw combat during the Civil War -- Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, and McKinley -- and how those experiences shaped them. •Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine, and the Murder of a President by the always-awesome Candice Millard (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO), was published in 2011 and it is the definitive book on Garfield's assassination. It's a detailed illustration of the shooting that wounded Garfield and his brutal, two-and-a-half -month-long battle to attempt to survive his wounds -- a battle that was ultimately lost largely due to the botched medical "care" that the President received after he was shot. Candice's book reads like a novel and it's apparently the basis for the upcoming Netflix series, "Death by Lightning" featuring Michael Shannon, Betty Gilpin, Matthew Macfadyen, and Nick Offerman.
Also, PBS's American Experience released a fantastic, two-hour-long documentary on Garfield's assassination in 2016 called Murder of a President, which was also partially based on Candice Millard's book. I'm pretty biased when it comes to American Experience, which I believe is a national treasure, but Murder of a President is especially good. I don't know if you can watch it directly from the PBS American Experience website right now, but you can find the film on sites like iTunes and Amazon Prime.

CBS‘ NCIS: Origins is about “a story I don’t tell,” narrator Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs tells us midway through the prequel spinoff’s premiere. Specifically, “This is the story of–“
Actually, the end of that sentence is a major spoiler, and the onset of a provocative mystery. And Gibbs’ full declaration, as the forever-analog former NCIS agent puts this story to paper in front of an Alaskan campfire, is bound to figuratively ignite your interest in what lies ahead.
Tumblr media
Launching this Monday at a special time (9/8c) with a double-episode premiere, NCIS: Origins is set in the year 1991 — not long after a young Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) returned from serving in Operation Desert Storm, only to bury his tragically killed wife and young daughter. The series follows Gibbs as he begins his career as a newly minted Special Agent at the NIS Camp Pendleton office, under the tutelage of the legendary Mike Franks (Big Sky‘s Kyle Schmid).
But we already know this story, some NCIS fans have contended, citing bits and pieces scattered across Mark Harmon’s 19 seasons on the mothership and a smattering of flashback episodes featuring Harmon’s son Sean as a young Gibbs. NCIS: Origins, though, is here to fill in blanks you weren’t expecting (including about the aforementioned story he mysteriously has never told), and bring to life seminal, never-before-seen moments from Gibbs’ past. (How do you think Jethro reacted when he first was told the Shannon/Kelly news?)
Because Gibbs is new to his job at NIS — and because he is still shellshocked by his personal loss to a greater degree than he might admit — “Probie” is understandably reserved upon claiming his desk at Camp Pendleton. He holds back on hunches. He’s more laconic than even his older self. That low-key vibe may give a viewer concern, out of the gate, given that this is Gibbs’ story. I, for one, had some reservations coming out of the premiere, for that very reason. But there is a “Gibbs first” in Episode 3 that excitingly activates the character and imbues the rookie agent with a confidence that will be warmly familiar to NCIS fans.
Tumblr media
Caleb Foote (Made for Love) and recurring guest star Bobby Moynihan (SNL) serve up comic relief as gung-ho Special Agent “Randy” Randolf and overworked forensics lab boss Woody. Diany Rodriguez (The Blacklist) is a bit of an enigma thus far as Special Agent Vera Strickland, though she and Molino have a powerful scene together early on. Similarly, Tyla Abercrumbie (The Chi) as Field Operation Support Officer/”Head Secretary in Charge” Mary Jo Hayes doesn’t get much focus until Episode 4, but when she does, she absolutely brings the goods as NIS’ warm beating heart.
Tumblr media
In recurring roles, Patrick Fischler (Mad Men) finds just the right level of officious as SAC Wheeler, and it’s very easy to see how Robert Taylor (Longmire) might age into NCIS‘ Ralph Waite, as Gibbs’ father Jackson.
Now, you ask: What about young Gibbs himself?
As noted above, series front man Austin Stowell — of Peacock’s A Friend of the Family and much more recently Starz’s Three Women — is tasked at the start with having to lie low and give us a Gibbs who is a bit unsure of himself, and is (too?) often distracted by tragic memories. And looks-wise, he is more “Jack Reacher” than “Sean Harmon.” But the nature of the character at this very specific point in his life does call for gravitas — this is Gibbs like you’ve never seen him before — and Stowell does well with that material, including to heartbreaking effect in Episode 4. (There are also times when Stowell’s voice eerily sounds just like Mark Harmon’s, or when he’ll cock his head just as Boss would when getting an update from DiNozzo.)
The 1991 setting, as you can imagine, lends itself to not just Asteroids and Galaga machines in the NIS break room, but all manner of “retro” technology and crimesolving methods. (Do not ask Franks how to start up the newly delivered PC, and do not expect fingerprint analysis back from Woody inside of two days!) A trip to a mall in Episode 3 doesn’t distract with ’90s fashion, but there are occasional needle drops — including a use of a Bangles tune that took me a second viewing to truly appreciate.
THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Both young Gibbs and NCIS: Origins take a minute to find their bearings, but once they do, this latest NCIS offshoot shows promise.

Mid-Year Book Freak Out
Stolen (politely) from @pterawaters - thanks!
Number of books you’ve read so far in 2024: 24! Haha
Best book you’ve read so far in 2024: I have to pick one? Sheesh. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by Victoria Schwab AND Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, tie.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024: Crooked Kingdom, also by Leigh Bardugo. I'm in love with the whole cast, and it continued the story perfectly.
New release you haven’t read yet but want to: Running Close to the Wind by Alexandra Rowland (in progress and it's great).
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao.
Biggest surprise favorite new author (debut or new to you): S.T. Gibson, because An Education in Malice delighted me. I wasn't a fan of her first (A Dowry of Blood) - which is definitely down to my being incredibly picky about my vampires in annoying ways rather than anything on Gibson's part, my entire book club loved it - but an author redemption is always such a delight for me and I'm here to grab her next book.
Newest fictional crush: I have to pick one? Yikes yikes yikes. I usually have one per book unless I hated the book 😂 this only counts as "newest" because I just did a reread, but Evemer Hoskadem from A Taste of Gold and Iron is the devoted, competent type with some delightful hidden flavors and that did make my heart flutter.
Book that made you cry: Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah. This book is a masterpiece and also a front-runner for my favorite book of the year so far. It's dystopian and upsetting, and it executes and delivers on multiple levels with such a high level of skill, it's incredible. I was in awe of the prose, the themes, the characterization, and the way it was a scarily believable extension of where we're going in US politics.
Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): The cover of Seven Devils by L.R. Lam and Elizabeth May is so neat and I always see something new looking at it. Also a beloved read this year.
Book that made you happy: Hamlet, Prince of Robots by M. Darusha Wehm. It's funny and smart and I love a retelling. This one does it perfectly.
What books do you need to read by the end of the year? Seven Mercies by L.R. Lam and Elizabeth May; Curse of the Divine by Kim Smejkal; The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken; Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake; Jade Fire Gold by June C.L. Tan; The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes by Cat Sebastian; 100 Queer Poems; Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin; Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros; One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston; Fine Print by Stjepan Sejic; The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon; The Power Broker by Robert Caro; and all the Kushiel's sequels I bought when they were on sale! There's more but that's enough for now. Thanks for reading, hope you got some fun new titles or enjoyed remembering good reads yourself!
Next up: periodic fanfic rec post!

Rank your favorite LIs within your favorite stories. (i.e., rank the OH lis, BOLAS lis, etc.)
Hey Nonny,
Thank you for the ask! I want to preface that these are my opinions, and others have different opinions, and that's all right. I'll do this for all the Choices stories I've read (and remember! lol). But I'll start with the 2 multiple LI stories I write for first.
Open Heart
Tobias Carrick - I know he wasn't an LI, but it's not my fault PB is stupid! lol
Ethan Ramsey
Bryce Lahela
Jackie Varma
Raf Aveiro
Wake the Dead
Eli SIpes
Troy Hassan
Shannon Fox
Angel Savage
Sledge
More Below
A Courtesan of Rome
Cassius (from what I remember lol)
Sabina
Syphax (in fairness, I never completed the route with him)
Julius Ceasar (hated the fucker, but he was hot as hell lol)
Desire & Decorum
Ernest Sinclaire I really like all the other LIs, but I'm eternally devoted to Ernest. lol I've never been able to pick anyone else.
Foreign Affairs
Blaine Hayes (M and F Versions)
Tatum Mendoza
Ayna Seth
The Freshman Series
Zig Ortega (eternally devoted to Zig! lol)
Becca Davenport
James Ashton
Chris Powell
Kaitlin Liao
Guinevere
Tie. I loved Arthur and Lancelot, I can't pick! lol
Hot Couture
Marco Di Vincenzo
Luz Estrada
Hazel Nguyen
Travis McKenzie (really not my type...)
LoveHacks
Marc Collins
Ben Park
Leah Myers
My Two First Loves
Noah Harris (Bad Boy/Default) LOVE Noah
Ava Lawrence (Best Friend/Default)
Mason Jennings (Childhood Crush/Default) Really didn't care for him.
Perfect Match
Damian Nazario
Alana Kusuma (sorry, she's hot) Didn't romance others. Sloane irritated me, and Hayden... they're a robot. lol
Queen B
Ian Kingsley (Sorry, not sorry!) Didn't romance others, Zoey was too friend zoned for me, and Poppy, absofreakingloutely NOT.
Red Carpet Diaries * I'm only about 5 chapters in - so this is subject to change.
Matt Rodriguez Really don't know enough about the rest just yet. Teja's stupid hat ruined her for me.
The Royal Romance
Drake Walker (Sorry, curmudgeons with a soft spot for LI are my kryptonite)
Liam Rys
Hana Lee (Love her, but to quote Hozier, she's too sweet for me)
Maxwell Beaumont (he's totally friend-zoned for me)
Rules of Engagement
(I barely remember this story, but from what I recall:)
William (Business Guy)
Leo (Prince)
Dean (Bartender)
The Unexpected Heiress
John Somerset
Gemma Montjoy
Hugh Crawford
Veil of Secrets *
(I am 11 chapters in, but pretty confident with my choices here:)
Grant Emerson
Naomi Silverhawk
Flynn O'Malley
Kate O'Malley
I started BOLAS but didn't get far. Based on what I read, I would say:
Mal Volari
Nia Elarious
I'm too human-centric for Tyril or Imtura, and I never met the others.
Thanks for the ask, Nonny!

Dizzy Reece – Blues in Trinity
Blues in Trinity is an album by Jamaican-born England-based jazz trumpeter Dizzy Reece, featuring performances recorded in 1958. It was his first album for the Blue Note label and is considered by some to be a ‘bop classic’ and among Reece’s best work. Allmusic awarded the album 4½ stars and the review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine stated, “Although the band was thrown together, there’s a definite spark to this combo, which interacts as if it had been playing together for a long time. Throughout it all, Reece steals the show with his robust playing, and that’s why Blues in Trinity rises above the level of standard-issue hard bop and becomes something special”. Dizzy Reece – trumpet Donald Byrd – trumpet Tubby Hayes – tenor saxophone Terry Shannon – piano Lloyd Thompson – bass Art Taylor – drums
