Images: Jill Scott (left) via Indy Week / Mahalia Jackson (right) via Celbrity Net Worth
The project, Mahalia!, will be produced by Queen Latifah and Jamie Foxx, and will star Jill Scott as Jackson. Stepping in to executive produce will be Latifah’s partner Shakim Compere alongside The Clark Sisters: The First Ladies of Gospel EP Holly Carter, which Latifah also served as producer.
On-board to write the film will be Richard Hocutt, Mark Gould and Tricia Woodgett. The film’s script will be based on the novel Mahalia Jackson by Darlene Donloe.
As reported by Deadline in their exclusive story on the biopic, Mahalia! has garnered the rights to Jackson’s entire music catalog, unlike Lifetime’s upcoming television movie.
“I am beyond grateful to be able to partner with Latifah and Shakim again and equally excited that Jamie has joined the team. Much like The Clark Sisters, Mahalia! is another epic story of faith that is driven by powerful and uplifting music. I believe Ms. Scott was a God send and will be absolute perfection in the lead role”, said Carter.
Latifah added, “This is such an incredibly important story to tell and we’re thrilled to work with Jamie on the project. Shakim and I are also looking forward to reteaming with our Clark Sisters producing partner, Holly Carter, to share Mahalia’s inspiring journey to becoming the Queen of Gospel music,” says Latifah.

You Brought The Sunshine Album (1981)
Hailing from executive producers Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige and Missy Elliott, The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel recounts the story of the legendary pioneers of contemporary gospel music and their trailblazing mother, Mattie Moss Clark (Aunjanue Ellis). Credited with bringing Gospel music to the mainstream, the five Clark sisters (Christina Bell as “Twinkie,” Kierra Sheard as “Karen,” Raven Goodwin as “Denise,” Sheléa Frazier as “Dorinda,” Angela Birchett as “Jacky”) overcame humble beginnings in Detroit, enduring abuse, loss, rejection, betrayal, and sibling rivalries to achieve international fame as icons of the Gospel music industry.

Salt-N-Pepa details the journey of Queensborough Community College students Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton as they enter the world of rap and hip hop, after recording a song for their friend Hurby Azor. Salt-N-Pepa made a huge impact as one of the first all-female rap groups, changing the look of hip hop and being unafraid to talk about sex and share their thoughts on men. The movie follows the group as they become the first female rap act to go platinum and experience ground-breaking success with multiple awards, including a Grammy® Award - paving the way for all female rappers to follow. The film will feature performances of Salt-N-Pepa's greatest hits, including: "Let’s Talk About Sex", "What a Man", "Shoop" and "Push It.” The movie stars GG Townson as Cheryl “Salt” James, Laila Odom as Sandra “Pepa” Denton, Cleveland Berto as music producer "Hurby Azor," Jermel Howard as rapper "Treach" and Monique Paul as "DJ Spinderella." Salt-N-Pepa is produced by Sony Pictures Television and directed by Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City, Baadasssss!) from a script by Abdul Williams (The Bobby Brown Story, The New Edition Story). Robert Teitel (The Hate U Give, Barbershop Franchise) from State Street Pictures serves as executive producer. I didn't realize they were actually rebooting the Scream TV series instead of having a third season. I still see sites referring to it as season 3. Pretty confusing. It's almost a shame because I really liked the characters and the dynamics they had with each other, and I was excited to see where the story would go next. I can understand why they decided to reboot it. At least we get Ghostface's mask.
Yeah, it’s gonna be pretty damn alienating for people just tuning in and seeing a totally new story and new characters. Their issue was viewership and, ironically, it looks like they’re going to lose all of the small semblance of fans the show had.
Showrunners Michael Gans and Richard Register were replaced when the decision was made to totally overhaul the show and take it in a brand-new direction. The main showrunner for the new season is Brett Matthews, with the other executive producers being Shakim Compere, Yaneley Arty and Queen Latifah.
Plus, it looks like it’s gonna have six half-hour episodes, which will make it basically movie length, so I guess this is that Scream 5 everybody wanted.

Tyga will face certain danger when Season 3 of MTV's Scream premieres in March 2018, The Hollywood Reporter revealed today.
The rapper/actor (aka Michael Ray Stevenson) will star as Jamal in the all-new version, which will feature an entirely new cast and creative reboot. Also on board: C.J. Wallace, aka the son of The Notorious B.I.G. and Faith Evans.
The new season, which will be filmed in Atlanta, will focus on Deion Elliot, a local star running back whose past comes back to haunt him and threaten his future — and the lives of his friends. Tyga's Jamal is Deion’s step-brother and, while they share blood, their worldviews couldn’t be more different. Jamal is a hustler by nature, willing to work any angle to make ends meet for those he considers family. But when Jamal’s ambitions don’t line up with Deion’s, it forces them to decide exactly how they fit into each other’s lives.
Wallace, meanwhile, plays Amir, a good kid with strict parents who demand he stay away from the ladies and ultimately work in the family business. But Amir wants to someday make music -- a dream he has to hide. Until, that is, he becomes the target of a killer (this is Scream, after all). Facing a gruesome end courtesy of a guy in a mask makes Amir realize he may want to chase his dreams — if he survives.
In April, MTV announced the series' new direction and its new executive producers: actress/rapper/mogul Queen Latifah, plus Shakim Compere and Yaneley Arty, for Flavor Unit Entertainment. Also serving as an executive producer -- and the series' brand-new showrunner -- is Brett Matthews, whose credits include The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural. Harvey and Bob Weinstein continue to serve as EPs under the Dimension TV umbrella; additional executive producers are the late, great Wes Craven, Tony DiSanto, Liz Gateley, Marianne Maddalena and Cathy Konrad. Matthew Signer and Keith Levine are producers.
In addition, Season 3 of Scream will feature a special binge model -- meaning fans won't have to wait several months to discover who's been behind the mask. Its six episodes will air during a special three-night event.
For more Scream details, keep checking MTV News -- and get ready for lots more murder and mayhem in March 2018.

BREAKING:
Multiple online sources are reporting that MTV is indefinitely moving forward with rebooting the Scream series with a new cast, story, and setting and Queen Latifah will serve as executive producer alongside Shakim Compere and Yaneley Arty.
“The series will feature an entirely new cast — which insiders say will be more inclusive as the series looks to put a new spin on a proved concept that has not been embraced on the small screen. Season two of Scream averaged only 377,000 total viewers — with seven days of DVR.”
To put it bluntly, it seems MTV is going in a less white direction. It’s no secret the entire Scream franchise has suffered from a lack of POC inclusion, and when diversity was actually introduced, it wouldn’t be long before Ghostface added those characters to the body count.
It’s likely that MTV is ready to change that with this new direction. Plot details and cast are still unknown.
