For day 2 we’re gonna continue with gospel legends since it’s Sunday. Sisters Jacky Clark Chisholm (1948), Denise "Niecy" Clark-Bradford (1953), Elbernita "Twinkie" Clark (1954), Dorinda Clark-Cole (1957), and Karen Clark Sheard (1960) make up the very distinguished group The Clark Sisters. They were brought up and taught to sing by their mother Dr. Mattie Moss Clark who was a gospel musician and choral director in the COGIC church. The Clark Sisters have many hits but one I’m gonna show y’all today is a good example of how gospel music often crosses over into the mainstream. You Brought the Sunshine was released in 1981 and is an early example of sampling in gospel as well. The song initially got a negative reaction from those in the church since it didn’t have the traditional gospel sound. In fact, it sampled Master Blaster by Stevie Wonder and went on to be played in clubs and many other places outside the church. Another reason for the hate from the church. They thought that gospel was solely for the church, which is stupid, and really weren’t happy. The Clark Sisters wound up going #1 on the Billboard charts and even won and performed at the Grammys though! They are played by many people both old and young, and I encourage anyone who enjoys today’s song to take a look at the rest of The Clark Sisters discography.

It is both Pride and Black Music Month, so it’s only right to start the month off with the Godmother and founder of Rock ‘N’ Roll: Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Born March 20th, 1915 in Cotton Plant , AR, Tharpe was a gospel and secular artist. One of the first to actually do both genres too. She was also a queer woman having a few relationships with women during her lifetime. It is due to her fusion of gospel, delta blues, New Orleanian Jazz, and R&B that we have rock n roll at all. Her chord progressions are so important and imbedded into the genre that without it rock n roll simply wouldn’t exist.

Lifetime’s ‘The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel’ Debuts as Highest Rated Original Movie of the Year on All of Television with 2.7 Million Total Viewers

          (LOS ANGELES, CA) – April 14, 2020 – Hallelujah! The Lifetime Original Movie The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel hit a high note on Saturday night April 11, delivering 2.7 million total viewers according to Nielsen Media Research, making it Lifetime’s highest-rated movie since 2016. It was the strongest original movie on all of television for 2020 across key demographics, including both broadcast and cable. Additionally, The Clark Sisters was the best ad-supported cable original movie since 2018, with 1.1 million adults 25-54, 905,000 adults 18-49 and 813,000 women 25-54.

     With the success of The Clark Sisters, Lifetime now claims the top three original movies on ad-supported cable in 2020 in key demos, along with Stolen By My Mother: The Kamiyah Mobley Story and Chris Watts: Confessions of a Killer.

        On social media, #TheClarkSisters ranked #1 across all TV on April 11 with over 700,000 interactions, according to Nielsen Social. #TheClarkSisters was the top social Lifetime movie over the last year. Red Carpet View hosted successful online live events on both Twitter and Facebook.

Blige and Missy Elliott, The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel recounts the story of the legendary pioneers of contemporary gospel music and their trailblazing mother, Mattie Moss Clark (Aunjanue Ellis). Credited with bringing Gospel music to the mainstream, the five Clark sisters (Christina Bell as “Twinkie,” Kierra Sheard as “Karen,” Raven Goodwin as “Denise,” Sheléa Frazier as “Dorinda,” Angela Birchett as “Jacky”) overcame humble beginnings in Detroit, enduring abuse, loss, rejection, betrayal, and sibling rivalries to achieve international fame as icons of the Gospel music industry.

In addition to Latifah, Blige, and Elliott, executive producers also include Holly Carter who also executive produces for Relevé Entertainment and Shakim Compere executive produces for Flavor Unit. The Clark Sisters have been slaying the gospel game for YEARS. And now, fans will get a behind-the-scenes look at their lives as they climbed their way to the top in the industry. They’re not called the First Ladies of Gospel for nothing.

Singing sisters Karen Clark Sheard, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Jacky Clark-Chisholm, and Elbernita "Twinkie" Clark-Terrell will be sharing their struggles and victories they experienced during their journey with the world in a LIFETIME biopic. And several of your faves made it happen.

Three powerhouses will be backing the film as executive producers, including Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, and Missy Elliott. Woot!

Good news coming out of the Gospel music industry for Jacky Clark! The two-time GRAMMY® Award, NAACP Image Award, Stellar and Dove Award-winning recording artist, known as a member and eldest sister of three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning legendary group, The Clark Sisters has inked a distribution deal with Nashville-based record label United Alliance Music Group (UAMG) announced today.
