Temari was pregnant on her wedding day: A Naruto Timeline analysis
[usual disclaimer: I love studying canon timeline but no one's headcanons have to be bound to it just do what you like bye]
Note: for simplicity, I gave years numbers, the Kyuubi attack/Naruto's birth are in 2000 and the other dates are based on that
Fact 1: Gaara is at least 20
In Gaara Hidden, one of the councilmen tells Gaara "You've steadily grown, and reached the age of twenty" and Temari and Shikamaru are in the process of choosing their wedding date in this novel as well, so the Wedding has to happen later than that.
We know from the data book that Gaara is from the same school year as Naruto, and born in January, so he is born in January 2001. (In Japan, the school year is from April to March of the next year and the children in the same class are the ones born during the same school year, not civil year. If you want to know why I say that data books are based on school years, not civil years, flick me a request and I will happily do so! Just not here because it'd be too long.)
We can conclude that the wedding is in February 2021 or later.
Fact 2: Shikadai graduates 15 years after the 4th war
There is no indication that I've found in canon material about when the Boruto events happen, but we can read in this interview that Naruto Gaiden happens 15 years after the last chapter of Naruto. (We will have to assume that "last chapter" here means chapter 699, not 700, or else all the new gen has spent 15 years being teenagers at the academy.) Naruto Gaiden opens with Shino telling the class (Shikadai is there) that the graduation exam will be in a week.
The issue here is that chapter 699 happens in October (Minato says happy birthday to Naruto in chapter 691 the same day, and we know from the data books he was born in October) and the graduation is presumably in March (again, that's one the school year ends, and Itachi is also said to graduate "in the springtime" in Itachi Shinden). So it could mean either 15,5 years later, or 14,5 years later.
The 4th War happens in October 2017 (Naruto turns 17 during it, that's the age the data book gives us).
We can conclude that Shikadai graduates either in March 2032 or 2033.
Fact 3: Shikadai graduates at 11
It is the minimum age as per the law (it is said in Itachi Shinden, this law is made shortly before the Rookie 9 graduate: “now that it was a time of peace [...] it was no longer possible to graduate in a short time [...] no matter how talented Sasuke was, he couldn't become a ninja until he was eleven years old”).
It is the age at which all the Rookie 9 graduate (they are said to turn 12 during the first year of naruto and 13 during the second, again, I can give more details about data book ages in another post if needed).
The naruto wiki tells me that the Naruto data book says he is 12 for the Chuunin Exam, but the scan I have of the data book do not seem to indicate any age that I can find?
So this is not 100% a fact that I have found a canon material number about, but it's the most logical possibility (he's not allowed to graduate younger, there's no reason he would graduate older, this is what happened to the previous gen, and this is what the whole fandom seems to believe, so, yeah).
Similarly, everyone seems to agree that his birthday is September 23, I have not found where that comes from yet, but I have to assume it does come from somewhere. If you know please tell me!
[Edit: apparently it comes from a bonus calendar in the Shounen Jump issue 6-7 of 2019 but I haven't found a scan yet.]
We can conclude that Shikadai was born in either September 2020 or 2021, depending on the graduation date.
Conclusion
If Gaara Hiden and the wedding were in 2021, Shikadai cannot have been born in 2020, so he has to be born in September 2021. If we imagine that Gaara Hiden takes place right after Gaara's birthday (the earliest date) and then Temari and Shikamaru got married on the month that followed, Temari would have been 2 months pregnant, and this is the minimum she could have been.
Your honour, they have sinned.

AA7 Speculation Post: 2021 Edition
So I did one of these back in August, claiming that it was likely we’d get an AA7 announcement sometime in September for the Tokyo Game Show. Obviously it was wrong. So I am doing ANOTHER ONE, because I apparently like publicly being proven wrong?
This will be shorter than the last one because I exhausted most of my material on the first one, and also there’s less material. There is, however, SOME new stuff we’ve learned since August. ... And I was going to make a post in November but completely forgot, so consider this a starting point for the year. I’ll be covering the leaks, in general terms, and theorizing when we will be getting announcements/releases.
The rest will be under the cut so as not to burden everyone with my ramblings.
The Capcom Leaks
First things first, a disclaimer: this information was leaked through a hack which was highly illegal and compromised the personal information of many former and current Capcom employees, and therefore, I do not condone the methods through which this information was obtained and will not provide any guidance as to how to obtain this information, nor have I sought it out myself. However, I will still talk about then in general terms, because the information is out there already, and the information I am discussing will not compromise any personal information.
In summary: early this November, the hacker group Ragnar Locker managed to hack into Capcom’s databases somehow and retrieved 1 TB of information from the company; this includes a bit of information on ace attorney, which was leaked in mid-November after the group demanded a ransom and, presumably, Capcom didn’t pay up.
The two major ace attorney reveals that came from this are as follows: the announcement of a DGS/DGS2 port for the nintendo switch, steam, and ps4 with an English translation, and a calendar for the development and release of this port along with... ace attorney 7.
It’s highly likely that this information was real, given the level detail and the fact that Capcom confirmed some of their information was leaked, essentially confirming that AA7 either is or once was in development -- more news about this than we’ve had in a long time! But what does it mean and when can we expect it? Let’s take a closer look at the calendar.
The Calendar
Unfortunately, this little thing happened in between the creation of this calendar and it being leaked, called “a global pandemic” or something like that, so this calendar is almost certainly behind.
But what did it say? I lost track of the original, but I did find a roughly translated version someone made (from this post which summarizes some of the stuff in the leaks):
So... what does this mean? First, let’s remember two things: one, this calendar was made pre-COVID and things were definitely pushed back. And two, the Japanese fiscal year starts April 1st, meaning that FY2021 starts in April. This means that as of writing this, we are technically in FY2020 Q4 - where, if we were on track, would be nearing the end of DGS1&2 port production and midway through AA7′s production. (We are almost definitely not on track.)
The pandemic started hitting Japan around April 2020, I believe, so that would be in FY2020 Q1. The DGS ports seem fairly unaffected, considering it’s later in production, and also, the DGS games are already complete, so most of the work would be on translating and adapting the games for modern consoles, rather than starting completely at scratch like AA7. AA7 is a little trickier: it was still in the prototype/pre-production stage, most likely, when the pandemic hit. I’m not tooootally sure what that means because I’m not a game developer, but it’s quite possible that this meant it took a serious hit. Given that there didn’t seem to be a lot of other AA7 data leaked, including in a large schedule of releases for Capcom later, there is the possibility that AA7 ended up being scrapped owing to the pandemic or other extenuating circumstances... but I don’t believe that’s likely, with the 20th anniversary coming up. We’ll see.
Another thing of note is that the name “AA7″ is temporary. Here in the English-speaking world that isn’t a big deal because all the AA games have random titles (like “Justice for All” and “Trials and Tribulations”...) but in Japan, they’re referred to simply with their numbers (GS2, GS3, etc. standing for Gyakuten Saiban 2, Gyakuten Saiban 3). The fact that “Gyakuten Saiban 7″ is a temporary name could possibly mean that what we are getting is not another mainline game.
However, again, there’s not really anything to support either of these things. I’m just bringing up random possibilities to cover my bases; but personally I think it’s likely that it is another mainline game, and that it is still in development. If we hear absolutely nothing about AA7 for all of 2021, though... then perhaps not.
Now... obviously, this calendar was pushed back. If we’re in 2020Q4 right now, then by the calendar DGS1&2 is hypothetically going to be released in about three-six months, and there has been absolutely no word on that so far. If this calendar were still being followed, we’d have AA7 on sale in Q3 of 2021 -- meaning October-December 2021, possibly in October for the 20th anniversary of the series, which would be super cool. ... but I doubt that will happen now.
So then, when are we getting the games?
I haven’t seen actual evidence of it, but rumour is that they’re pushing back DGS1&2 for a July release and an April announcement, giving three months between announcement - release. This is a shorter period than the most recent trilogy switch/ps4/pc/xbox release, which was announced in September 2018 and released February 2019 in Japan, a five month waiting period.
When we English-speaking players will get the duology is unknown, too -- the trilogy rereleases took a month and a half before they were released in English, despite already having been translated and the original released in Japan coming with an English language option. (No idea what was up with that!) The duology released in Japan reportedly will have an English option from the outset, though the English released version will not have the Japanese option because of copyright issues surrounding Sherlock Holmes -- sorry, I mean, Herlock Sholmes. Still, we should expect a few months following the Japanese release before we are able to play it ourselves. Same goes with the hypothetical AA7, which seems to typically be around three months following the Japanese release for an English release.
As for when we can expect AA7′s announcement... to the extent of my knowledge, the shortest announcement-release period for a game was Spirit of Justice, announced in September 2015 and released in Japan in June 2016, a period of nine months. Usually it takes longer. Assuming that there’s still that six-month gap between the DGS duology release and the AA7 release, we could hypothetically have AA7 in early 2022, pushed back a quarter, and if the announcement comes nine months ahead... it lines up pretty nicely with an April announcement. If we’re having a DGS announcement in April as rumoured, it would make sense to tie in the AA7 announcement to that as well.
How will they be announced? ... I’m not sure. TGS back in September would have been the most opportune time for an announcement, but I have the feeling that owing to our good friend the pandemic, they didn’t have enough to show for either the ports or AA7 back then and so opted not to show anything. If these games are for the Switch, they could be announced in a Nintendo Direct. Or they could be announced in a Famitsu magazine with trailers released later outside of any other event. Honestly I don’t really know for this part.
Overall, though? This is the upcoming 20th anniversary of the series. I’d be surprised if we ended up not getting anything. Despite the pandemic likely pushing everything back, I think it’s highly likely we’ll get some big ace attorney news soon, even if it’s not quite in time for the anniversary -- of course, the safety and health of the employees comes first, so a bit of a delay will be just fine.
TL;DR: I’m theorizing we’ll have DGS port/ AA7 announcements around this April, with DGS being released around July and AA7 being released late 2021/early 2022, with a few months delay for the English versions.
#ace attorney#aa7 speculation#this one's short but once we get an idea on concept I plan to go wild on theorizing

New in 2020, Reuben's Brews releasing Mind the Gap!, the Unbound Series, and Reuben’s Crush® Series goes seasonal
After a year that saw the brewery release over 170 beers, Reuben’s Brews is looking forward to 2020 with an ambition to release a new year-round India Pale Ale, plus two new seasonal releases. All of this and more is in their 2020 release calendar, shared with everyone via their website http://bit.ly/35EB72A. So, like 2019, let’s breakdown what’s in and what’s out.
In - An homage to London’s Tube
Coming soon, the brewery releases a beer with a familiar name evoking warmth and memories of Co-founder Adam Robbing’s days in England. Named Mind the Gap!, Reuben’s Brews releases an India Pale Ale, joining the ranks of Crikey IPA, Pilsner, Hazealicious IPA, and Robust Porter; as the only beers available throughout the year.
More on Mind the Gap!
Mind the Gap! is a highly drinkable and crisp India Pale Ale at 5.3% ABV. Previously available only at our Taproom, Mind the Gap! will now be available year-round in cans beginning in March 2020. Perfect for Pacific Northwest adventures, this brew was made for mindfully enjoying the “gaps” in the day.
Of note, Reuben’s Brews’ Bits & Bobs, Summer IPA and Moreish IPA will remain apart from the “Seasonal IPA” series; starting in March with Bits & Bobs, followed by Summer IPA (available May thru August), and Moreish IPA (available November & December).
In - Reuben’s Crush® Series becomes a seasonal
Onto their hype series, AKA the Reuben’s Crush® Series, the brewery has confirmed their long-standing series has been promoted to a more seasonal schedule, from its previous limited release schedule. Look for Reuben’s Crush® Series, available throughout the Pacific Northwest in 16-ounce cans and on draft.
Starting in late January/Early February with the release of Azacca Crush, look for additional releases such as Mosaic Crush (in April), Crush Cancer (in June), Citra Crush (in August), Galaxy Crush (in October), and PNW Crush (in December).
In - Unbound Series turns your year-round beers up to 11
Realizing that some people, while sitting around the table, might ponder what a beer such as Crikey or Bits & Bob’s might resemble with a bit more alcohol or extra ingredients, the brewers of Reuben’s Brews have an answer.
Released in 22-ounce bottles, the Unbound Series takes your favorite (year-round) beers, and adds fun twists; starting with their beloved Crikey IPA with blood oranges added and reborn as Bloody Crikey. Available now, look for Bit & Bobs to gain some alcoholic weight by March, followed by other planned beers including Lemon Lime Pilsner (available May & June), , Hazelicious P.O.G. (available July & August), Autumn Harvest (available September & October), and Reuben Claus (available November & December); each available as a limited-time seasonal.
In - Small Batch and Sour Series join a new Breadth Series
Recognizing the potential of their three breweries (5 barrel, 15 bbl, and 30 bbl), Reuben’s Brews is restating their commitment to release unique beers, as they become available. In the past this has resulted in beers from Holiday Gose or Festbier to Blimey That’s Bitter!, as well as beers from their barrel-aged program (both fresh oak, wine, and second-use liquor barrel-aged).
Coming up with a simple name, the brewery combines their Small Batch and Sour Series into the Breadth Series.
Out - A comprehensive list of beers from their Small Batch and Sour Serieses.
Unlike 2019, where the brewery announced beers including Gobsmacked!, Mexican Lager, Day of the Dead Dark Lager, and Mole Stout; the brewery is keeping things close to to chest to surprise those willing to visit the brewery.
Unchanged - Their commitment to providing the Pacific Northwest with plenty of beer.
Since seven years prior, the brewery, it’s staff, and the ownership continue to offer their commitment to releasing high-quality beer, so long as you the supporters are there to enjoy it.
Reuben’s Brews has two locations in Seattle at 5010 14th Avenue NW and 800 NW 46th St, Seattle, WA 98107. For more information including hours, events, and current draft beers, visit http://bit.ly/2sPxFoJ.

Oh, 2019, What A Year You Were.
It is now a bit before 6pm on January 01, 2020. I just finished unpacking after coming home from my short holiday escape to Berlin for New Year’s with my best friend and frequent travel buddy. My feet are tired, my back hurts, and I’m sitting in bed now, thinking back on this last year and, it’s kind of hard for me to decide if it was a good year or less so.
My 2019 was not as eventful as my 2018. There was no large adventure to speak of like going to New York City for six months, or having to adjust back to life in Switzerland after that. 2019 was just…..uni. The same old trudge of going to class and thinking about texts that should be read (but wouldn’t be), the same old treading water without direction, stuck in one place, unsure what comes next. Or, at least, that’s what it feels like looking back on it.
When I did this looking back the last time, 2018 was not quite over yet. It was still December, I had a few more days of uni to go, all the Christmases and other celebrations still before me. At that point, I had no idea that I would meet a couple of people at the Christmas Party of our English Department and that these people would be largely responsible for tipping the scale of 2019 into ‘good’.
But I did. I did meet these lovely people I get to call something akin to family today. It’s only been a year, and I can’t quite believe it. Found family has always been my favourite trope in storytelling, and this little group of weirdos is exactly that. And to quote my favourite little alien creature, this is my family. I found it, all on my own. It’s little, and broken, but still good. Yeah, still good.
These people are not perfect, they’re not flawless, they’re not angels. But they have more humanity between them than I’ve seen in a long fucking while. We’re all broken people, none of us is any better than the next, but we have heart. And I love them all so fucking much. They have all coloured in parts of my year in their own colours and I could not be happier about it. They’re a bunch of fucking weirdo nerds, but they’re my bunch of fucking weirdo nerds.
* * *
This year was, while largely uneventful, also very special in its own way. You know, after talking to my doc to get a date for a transgender consultation, my plan was basically to wait until I got it all lined up nicely, got my first shot of testosterone and then be like "hello world, this is happening, and if you have anything against it, whoops, too late.” Well, it didn’t quite work out like that. If you’ve been keeping up with this blog or my life in general, you know that my anxious ass decided to have a nervous break in the middle of January and come out to literally everyone then and there. And you know what? It’s good.
I’m not where I want to be, not at all. After January, I had expectations for 2019, I had hopes and dreams, wishes and plans. Unfortunately, that lead to a series of events that is tipping the scale of this year into ‘bad’. I wrote about this extensively before, but the process of starting testosterone is a long and tedious one and I am still not where I want to be, even after this entire year, but I currently see a shiny dot on the horizon that looks very promising in that department, and if everything goes as it should, it won’t be long now until I can start with the hormone treatment.
2019 started me down a road of self-discovery that is more open and public than it was before, and I am glad for it. But I don’t want to linger on that part of my year for too long. Let us look back for a while, relive some moments here and there.
On the train home from the airport today, I thought about what I did exactly one year ago. After everyone who had been at my place for New Year’s had left around lunch time on January 01, 2019, I had sat down in front of my TV and started a very movie and tv show heavy year. Over the course of this entire year, I noted down every movie and tv show episode, every short film and comedy special, everything that I watched. It…..added up quite a bit, to be completely honest. Let’s see….
For reference, I had holidays during January and half of February, as well as June all through August and half of September, and then again from the 21st of December onward. My marathon didn’t quite subside during university, but at least I didn’t binge quite so much.
In total, I watched 178 movies, 10 short films, and 685 episodes of 34 tv shows. That is 300h12 in movies, 1h38 in short films, and roughly 519h47 in tv show episodes. (Yes, I did just spend way too much time looking up all the run times…) That is a rough total of 821h37 for this year. That’s like….a bit over a month of time spent watching stuff. 1/12 of my year spent in front of a screen. Not entirely sure how I feel about this number.
I know that for some this might sound a bit excessive, but to be honest? There is so much more I want to watch and if I could do completely as I please, these numbers would look a lot different.
Here is, with the exact intention of being a big mess of a block, all the movies I watched in 2019. I highlighted a few that stood out to me especially. Not just because I liked them very much, or because they were particularly excellent, just because….they made me feel something different, I guess. The oldest movie I watched was Grease (1978) and the newest would be the comedy special John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch from this year. I started my year with Night at the Museum (2006) and ended it with season five of Leverage.

Some old favourites in there. Some new ones too. I won’t list the shorts because I don’t particularly care for them. I watched them solely for binging-through-someone’s-filmography reasons.
So yeah, as you can see, a very strong year when it comes to the visual medium. I just really love movies and tv shows so much. I love this kind of storytelling, this particular form of it. There’s so much artistry there, so many talented people. I still very much would love to work in the movie world at some point. Inspires me greatly. Always has.

2019 was not just a year of sitting glued to a TV screen, not at all. I’ve been some places too, got to do and experience some cool stuff.
In April I was able to take a few days off and go to Lugano with my dear friend and relax for a little while. We also met up with one of the lovely people I’ve met through twitter, which was great fun and we’ve spent a fantastic day together (eating food I still catch myself thinking about at least twice a week).
In June I went to Pride in Zurich with my friends, which was also a wonderful experience all together.
In July I was able to go to Cologne for half a week for CCXP, where I got to see some great panels and meet some great people. And, most importantly and also the reason why I went, I got to meet Zachary Levi again, take a picture together, have a wonderful conversation while he signed something for me, and experience an incredibly inspiring panel where I got to ask him a question that he took the time and patience to extensively answer. I treasure these moments, just as I treasure all our previous meetings and the friends and experiences that have come with it. Seeing him again after two years was definitely the highlight of the year, and it’s a strong weight of the good part in the scale that is 2019. He’s always a highlight, the dude. I can’t wait until I get to see that face again.
Also in July, I joined a few friends for a weekend at a medieval festival in Germany, which was also a very interesting and good experience.
And now at the end of the year, I spent a few days in Berlin, visiting museums and bookshops and generally touristing about with my dearest friend, celebrated New Year’s with her in the only way we know how: with good wine, food, warmth, and a tv show we both love and hold dear.
I also shouldn’t forget the two parties I attended of our university’s English Department, and the Halloween party a friend organised, and the birthdays I attended over the year, as well as the Christmas I spent with my friends at my place.
All these things, all these little bits add up and add up and ultimately I want to think that 2019 was a good year. I am so glad this year is over, but looking back I find so many good things that have happened, so many wonderful experiences, and I wonder, why? Why am I so happy it is over? Why am I so desperate to move forward, to turn the page, to start a new chapter, a new book?
I don’t know. I really don’t know.
* * *
For this new year, for 2020, I have a few wishes. I’m not really one to make resolutions, because I know exactly I won’t hold myself to it, but I have some things I’d like to do, like to try.
2019 was my year of movies and shows. I won’t stop watching things, I’ll never stop watching things. But for this year, I want to put my focus elsewhere. This year, I’d like to try and read all the books that have amassed themselves in my possession, that I haven’t actually read yet. It’s doable, I don’t own enormous amounts of books yet. I want to try that. I want to try to read more, to find that passion and attention span again that I had as a kid. I might try to blog a bit about it, just so I have something to hold me accountable. We’ll see. But I just really want to read more. Carry a book everywhere I go.
I know that 2020 is bringing me another step closer to becoming my truest self. I have my next appointment with the hormone specialist early in February, and if I am not entirely mistaken (or something is drastically changed) I will be able to start taking hormones then and there. Starting testosterone is going to be exciting and interesting, and I am very much looking forward to it. What I want for myself this year, is to take it easy. Be kind to myself in this journey. Let myself be gentle. I always have so many expectations for myself, and I really just want to try and…let myself be, let myself just live and experience things as they come. No expectations.
This first half year of 2020 is also the time I will be writing my Bachelor thesis and, hopefully, by summer I’ll have my degree. It’ll be a tough but I hope also rewarding time for me. Having to shift the way I write papers (quick, barely researched and sourced, not even remotely re-read, always started mere hours before the deadline) to something more useful for a thesis, something fitting for a thesis, is going to be challenging. Keeping my head in the right space, keeping the focus and doing the work, it’s all going to be hard for me. But I have faith that I will find a way to reign in my scatterbrain and flick the hyper-focus switch into something that will be sustainable for the time I have to write my thesis in.
Speaking of my thesis, there is something I have not mentioned yet, that strongly informed my experience of 2019. Good Omens is the book I’ll be writing my thesis about (specifically a queer theological reading of it) and Good Omens was the story that has shaped my year. I re-read the book at the beginning of term and once the mini-series came out at the end of May, I did not really think about anything else since. This book and this show are so incredibly important to me, and it is, after a long while of nothing even remotely getting there, the first thing that has captured my attention so strongly, that it has outlasted my one-month hyper-focus ability and shows no signs of stopping any time soon. And that I am so incredibly grateful for. I wasn’t sure if I could still do it. Have an interest, have passion for something, for longer than a month. So many things I tried and loved and done, and after a single month, I dropped them like a hot potato and never touched them again. But Good Omens came and took me by my hand and lead me into the promised land. Especially since the show came out, I feel like a changed person. I have talked about it to no end, and I could go on forever now too, but I’ll just say this for now: This story of an angel and a demon crossing the divide that is their differences, coming together in love for the world, for humanity, and each other, this story means everything to me, and it has given me so much. Nothing is ever going to change that. That is irrevocable. And I know that 2020 won’t change that fact. I have faith that this passion will continue on and will inspire more positive change in me. It’s already started bringing me back to writing and drawing, so I know that it will lead me somewhere.
There is so much more I could say here, now, about 2019, about 2020. About my plans and my wishes, my dreams and the things I ought to do. But I think, I’ll leave it at that, for now. I tried this monthly blogging last year for the first time, and I think I’ll try to continue doing it. So, you can expect to read more of my thoughts on all kinds of things.
For now, however, let me say this: 2020 can be anything you want it to be. 2020 is yours to shape, yours to create in, yours to manage, yours to use. I want my 2020 to be gentle, to be taken one step at a time, to be experienced to the fullest, to be lived and felt and actively experienced. Sure, bad things can happen, bad things can always happen. But it’s your decision what happens next.
In 2020, I want to start loving more unapologetically. Do good, recklessly. Be kind, always. Not just to others, but to myself.
…
I have faith in us, you know? Humans. There’s so much hope there, still. 2020 might just as well show it.
…
Happy New Year, everyone. I hope it’ll be a good one for you.

My 10 Wildlife/Photography 2019 highlight blogs: Opening blog about another brilliant year of birds for me
People who have known me for a while may recall that in 2016, 2017 and 2018 I had sensational birding years by my standards and with what I achieved with the bank of species seen, fast starts to year lists and year list totals with each of these years overtaking everything else and being my highest ever year list they got better and better and 2018 seemed an impossible act to follow. Here I examine how well I did follow it, and tomorrow the post at around the same time is solely about experiences with some of my 28 favourite birds that I saw this year.
My 2019 followed 2018 perfectly, I have seen 195 species currently making it my second highest year list ever. Many of the species I have seen have been phenomenal again. The start definitely was what I will call fast again in that I saw a lot of birds in January, it was my second highest amount seen on New Year’s Day after 2016 where two woodpeckers Great Spotted and Green, two thrushes Redwing and Fieldfare and Siskin starred across a few locations. In the early days it was behind where 2017 and 2016 had been on those dates with how many birds I had seen, then all of a sudden when I had a week off it was the highest a year list of mine had ever been on on given dates. In mid-January when a year before my Scotland trip had happened in 2018 and all those year ticks 2018 was the highest on the given dates, but 2019 stayed closely behind it as the second highest my year list had been on on these dates which I was thrilled with. This continued in February and in March it even overtook where 2018 had been on certain dates. The same happened in April as I reached the milestone 150 birds a day earlier than I had in 2018, and it was neck in neck between the two going into May. In June and into July it even overtook what I had seen on 2018 on the dates, it fell behind again over the summer but pulled back level and began to overtake what my 2018 had been on on certain dates again in September and these two year lists were way ahead of every other year for me on those dates going into October too. Of course last year in this post I remarked how I was on amounts of birds seen in 2018 that I only reached two months later in 2017 and other years. So I just thought it was going to be more normal this year and I would notice how far 2018 was ahead. I have appreciated my high numbers of birds seen last year but also been right there with it on the dates this year which I am thrilled with. In November and into December now it has stayed neck in neck again but actually for a good while now I have been in a position where I have seen seen more birds on these days than I had a year ago. No matter what, to even stay as close to the exceptional year that was 2018 for me as it did with more modest places visited really and species ranges available was something I was so proud of.
The week off in January I had from work spent birdwatching was crucial to my start and whole year. It took me on my first of four trips away of the year so I was lucky with that, two nights in Gloucestershire so I could visit WWT Slimbridge on my birthday. On that magical day reserve specialities Bewick’s Swan (shown there in the 1st picture in this photoset), Common Crane, White-fronted and Barnacle Geese were star birds seen, alongside Peregrine Falcon, Water Rail (shown in the 2nd picture in this photoset that I took that day), Golden Plover and Ruff. When back from that week off I remember saying one morning at work I could tell you the highlight birds from that week but I would be here until lunch time. But so many amazing birds seen in home areas and on the way to our trip away that week included; Waxwing (as shown that day in the 3rd picture in this photoset at Totton the first major quality bird I saw this year and one of the biggest highlights in 2019), Jack Snipe, Red Kite, Bearded Tit, Marsh Harrier, Ring-necked Duck, Cattle Egret, Purple Sandpiper, Greenshank, Common Gull, Shag, Black-necked Grebe, Gannet, Guillemot, Fulmar, Great White Egret, Yellow-browed Warbler, Yellow-legged Gull and Goldeneye.
The theme of seeing top birds continued throughout the year, some of my other greatest birds I saw in 2019 included; Spotted Redshank, Eider Duck, Goosander, Barn Owl, Sanderling, Crossbill, Hawfinch, Bar-tailed Godwit, Scaup, Mediterranean Gull, Corn Bunting (shown in the 4th picture in this photoset at Martin Down in May), Red-legged Partridge, Lesser Yellowlegs, Bittern (shown at Blashford Lakes in the 5th picture I took in this photoset), Lesser Redpoll, Brambling, Hooded Crow, Little Owl, Spoonbill, Little Ringed Plover, Redstart, Glossy Ibis, Razorbill, Yellowhammer, Little Tern (shown at Lymington in the 6th picture I took in this photoset), Common Sandpiper, Sand Martin, Dartford Warbler, Cuckoo, Sandwich Tern, Hobby, Sedge Warbler, Red-necked Phalarope, Lesser Whitethroat, Woodlark, Kittiwake, Puffin, Roseate Tern, Dipper, Spotted Flycatcher, Wood Sandpiper, Osprey, Black Tern, Whimbrel, Whinchat, Chough, Manx Shearwater, Common Scoter, Yellow Wagtail, Long-billed Dowitcher, Ring-necked Parakeet , Ring Ouzel, Garganey, Black Redstart, Long-tailed Duck, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Snow Bunting and three Short-eared Owls flying gloriously around us one of my standout moments this year on one of my standout birding days of 2019 with so much else seen at Portland Bill and isle that day. Twelve of the birds I saw this year I saw for only the second time in my life or it was only the second individual I’d seen of the species which really stood out as a unique point in my birding this year.
A big bird at Blashford Lakes in late April was the Bonaparte’s Gull and I was lucky enough to get a very distant view of it but watch it for quite a while. This was a fantastic species to see and made me so happy. It ended a longer wait compared to recent years as it was my first new bird of 2019. This took my life list to a bit of a milestone as it was bird 260 in my life.
My next life tick came in Northumberland in June with the Arctic Terns I saw on Coquet and Farne Islands, which l talk about more in my sixth of these posts about that holiday. During this week away we also dropped in on Druridge Pools and saw the very rare duck the Baikal Teal that was there my first ever, another beauty.
In July I saw a bird I hadn’t seen flying about in the wild before when I saw one of the White Storks on a day at Knepp. I got a beautiful view of this species and saw where they had attempted to nest so it felt very rewarding to see at this rewilding project at exciting times for these birds going forward now. Our timing was perfect in September when we had our holiday to Cornwall the first week and two of the first few Brown Boobies in the UK ever seen had turned up! On the second day of the holiday we went to Kynance Cove where one had been reported and saw it sitting on a rock. An honour to see this it was a mega and a Champions League standard bird for sure I was over the moon to see it. I talk about this more in my penultimate post of this thread on Christmas Eve about the Cornwall holiday.
The only way to follow the Brown Booby would be with another mega and that we did later in the month by seeing the Eastern Olivaceous Warbler that dropped into Farlington Marshes. It was a really beautiful bird to see and one that was so distinctive. I was lucky to get some really good views of it that day as it flew in and out of thick vegetation. This top bird sighting came at such a good point in my year that weekend too with so much else happening to make it one of my most memorable two days.
My next new bird came on 21st October as we finally managed to catch up with a Wryneck after so many times trying to see one. This was at Hill Head where we had a really good search for apparently two that had showed up. We and some other birdwatchers got some joy when we looked around the chalet area and were thrilled to spot one in someone’s garden. We enjoyed a glorious good few minutes with this beautiful and sensational species watching it fly west, giving some fantastic views in trees and on the ground. I took the 7th picture in this photoset of it. It was such a feel good twitch and really one of my main standout moments in my 2019 birdwatching a year that has been amazing for me. This was the fourth woodpecker species I’ve ever seen, my 266th bird in my life and a very important milestone 190th bird of 2019 for me which took it level with my 2017 as my joint second highest ever year list that day. I did go onto see more than 190 bird species this year of course.
Other bird pictures I took in 2019 I have included in this photoset are; Moorhen and chick along the river Itchen in June one of my favourite spring pictures this year, Pied Wagtail during winter’s Big Garden Birdwatch for the RSPB a standout moment I had a really good year for seeing a variety of garden birds generally and other wildlife around the garden and house like a Hedgehog, butterflies and moths and Avocet at Brownsea Island, Dorset in October. Going back to the garden birdwatch and I very much enjoyed doing a similar event yesterday Birdaware Solent’s Great Solent Birdwatch doing it at Weston Shore as I said in my post last night. These were just two of a whole host of citizen science surveys for various organisations I was proud to take part in this year for all wildlife. On another avian photography note in November I found out some of my bird photos from this year (Lesser Redpoll at Blashford Lakes, another Waxwing, Totton one and Blackbird out the back) I’d entered into the Blissful Birder calendar competition earlier in the year had made their ‘Birds of England’ calendar 2020. I was very proud of this. It was a real honour to see some of my pictures alongside some superb work which displays how proud we should be of English birds. It was fitting this happening as one of my earliest birdwatching memories was buying an RSPB calendar which led me to join their Wildlife Explorers with a link to it on the back a big early staging post in my interest after I had got the famous (for me) sticker book of birds which started my interest. So 10 years into me being into photography started by birds to get my own pictures on a commercial calendar felt amazing.

In collaboration with artists Martin Ontiveros and Paige Buda, Hopworks Urban Brewery announces their 2020 releases.
Recognizing that many of you have elected abstention over consumption, during the month of January, the ownership and brewers of Hopworks Urban Brewery - one of the few certified organic breweries in the region - is happy to announce what’s waiting for you in February and into 2020.
Starting with a new can design, from Portland artist Martin Ontiveros (aka, Martinheadrocks, illustrator and wizard), Hopworks Urban Brewery undergoes a cleanse with the help of an artist who has described his work as pop-occultism and “Creature Chic”. Furthering this ‘cleansing’ redesign, artist (and PSU grad) Paige Buda contributes using her unique approach of generating a narrative while inspiring a discussion.
Letting these two unique artists’ work speak for themselves, Hopworks Urban Brewery was happy to share their upcoming can design for calendar year 2020.

As one can see, the designs are not only colorful and iconic but might inspire one to collect rather than recycle the can.
And the beers? Well, rather than bore you with a comparison and contrast between 2019’s seasonal, limited edition, and full-time availability beers; the brewery has provided us the following confirmed beers, available all year and the following beers which have a limited window before they are retired.
Available all year
Powell IPA––Hopworks’ flagship IPA celebrates their mothership brewery on Powell Blvd in Portland OR. The beer is brimming with melon, tropical fruit, and a touch of dank. It’s low on bitterness and big on flavor. This beer is brewed to be your everyday IPA. Available now.
Golden Hammer Lager––Available around April 2020.
Robot Panda Hazy IPA––Robot Panda is a fruity, juicy Hazy IPA that balances a soft and fluffy malt body with big hop additions of Denali, Lemondrop, and Cascade. Tasting notes: spruce, Meyer lemon, tangerine, papaya, and bright lime zest. Available now.
Tree Frog Pale Ale––Hopworks’ new pale ale is bursting with juicy and floral aromas. An easy drinking pale ale made with Fuggle, Centennial, Amarillo, Simcoe. Available around February 2020.
Available for a limited time, throughout the year
Juicy Bear IPA––Juicy and full bodied, yet absolutely crushable. Hopworks’ seasonal IPA springs to life with aromas of peach, tangerine, starfruit and papaya. Available from February 2020 to June 2020.
Totally Chill Hazy IPA––This Hazy IPA is loaded with pineapple and mango hop flavor from Azacca, Mosaic, and El Dorado hops. It’s brewed with a generous amount of oats and wheat for a super cloudy look and fluffy mouthfeel. Available from June 2020 to September 2020.
Abominable Winter Ale––Made with Northwest hops and malt, Abominable has a complex floral, spicy, and citrus hoppiness backed up by just the right amount of malt sweetness. Available from September 2020 to December 2020.
Besides the above, the brewery is committed to releasing more barrel-aged beers as well as the turn of Pig of War and whiskey barrel-aged Abominable Winter Ale.

What to know in the week ahead
Investors this week are gearing up to hear from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell in his semiannual monetary policy testimony before Congress and to receive a set of corporate earnings results from Airbnb and DoorDash —two newly public companies.
Powell’s testimony will take place Tuesday before the Senate Banking Committee and on Wednesday before the House Financial Services Committee.
In recent public appearances, Powell has reiterated that the central bank would maintain an easy monetary policy posturing in order to support the economy as it emerges from the coronavirus pandemic. Notably, labor market data — including a host of disappointing weekly jobless claims reports and weak January and December monthly jobs reports — have pointed to a job market still under considerable strain due to the pandemic, making the case that aggressive policy responses should remain in place as a lifeline.
“[Powell] will likely note recent progress in the data but reiterate that the economy is far from fully recovered, thereby defending accommodative monetary policy,” Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer said in a note Friday.
The Fed’s ongoing response to the coronavirus pandemic has involved a massive asset purchase program totaling $120 billion per month, alongside ultra-low interest rates. Officials have suggested benchmark rates will remain near zero until at least 2023.
But one of the side effects of a strong, policy-supported recovery, however, has been higher rates, as well as the specter of rising inflation. Powell and other Fed officials have suggested they would seek inflation that averages 2% over time, implying they would allow for some overshoot to offset what has been persistently low inflationary trends. However, Fed officials have also been increasingly queried on how much inflation they might tolerate coming out of the pandemic, given that while higher rates and rising prices are natural byproducts of an economy on the rebound, they can also become a hindrance to the pace of recovery if they occur too quickly.
Story continues
“There is a delicate balance: strong growth could prompt a faster rise in rates, driving up borrowing costs and weighing on risky assets, limiting upside economic growth,” Meyer added.
However, Powell has suggested that any jump in inflation in the coming months will be transitory. As March approaches, inflation may appear to spike on a year-over-year basis, given that 2020’s data was so heavily depressed by the onset of the pandemic. But these effects will likely dissipate later in 2021, and will not reflect overheating in underlying inflationary trends, Powell has maintained.
“We believe [Powell] will reiterate that now is not the time to be discussing an exit strategy for monetary accommodation considering significant uncertainty,” Nomura economist Lewis Alexander wrote in a note Friday. “Moreover, he will likely seek to downplay any concerns over inflation given upcoming base effects in Q2. the relatively weak December and January employment reports will offer Powell an opportunity to highlight the significant progress the labor market still needs to make before approaching ‘full employment.'”
Powell may also use his testimony to reiterate his call for additional fiscal support from Congress to augment the support offered through the Fed’s policies. During Powell’s last FOMC press conference in late January, he characterized fiscal support as absolutely essential” to the economic recovery, while declining to offer an assessment of how much additional aid might be appropriate out of Congress.
Other Fed officials have recently suggested a large fiscal package, such as the $1.9 trillion proposal under debate in Congress, would be warranted by the current economic situation. Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren told Reuters on Friday that the “big fiscal package that is being considered right now” was “appropriately big,” while New York Fed President John Williams told CNBC he was “not really concerned about fiscal support right now being excessive.”
Airbnb, DoorDash earnings
Newly public companies Airbnb (ABNB) and DoorDash (DASH) are poised to report their first-ever quarterly results as public companies on Thursday, offering a fresh look at the businesses following their massive public debuts.
Since going public, Airbnb’s stock has enjoyed a run-up of nearly 200%, fueled by optimism over the business’s long-term growth potential in a post-pandemic world. Though Airbnb saw gross booking value (GBV) decline by 39% in the first nine months of 2020, the company had been growing more strongly leading up to the pandemic, with bookings surging by 29% during its full fiscal 2019.
However, Airbnb’s fourth quarter report will still show negative impacts from the virus, the company warned in its prospectus late last year.
“During the fourth quarter of 2020, another wave of COVID-19 infections emerged. As a result, countries imposed strict lockdowns, in particular in Europe. Similar to the impact of the initial COVID-19 wave in March 2020, we are seeing a decrease in bookings in the most affected regions,” according to the filing. “As a result, we expect significantly greater year-over-year decline in Nights and Experiences Booked and GBV in the fourth quarter of 2020 than in the third quarter of 2020 and greater year-over-year increases in cancellations and alterations in the fourth quarter of 2020 than in the third quarter of 2020.”
That said, Airbnb has been touted by some analysts as a better alternative to traditional hotels during and after the pandemic, given that users can book entire, socially distant homes and other alternative accommodations rather than lodges with communal lobbies. Still, the valuation of the stock has left others on the sidelines, given the firm’s $120 billion market capitalization — or nearly three times Marriott’s (MAR) $44 billion market cap, for comparison – and persistent losses. Airbnb’s stock has 12 Buy ratings or equivalents, 21 Hold ratings and 3 Sell ratings by analysts on Wall Street, according to Bloomberg data.
All told, Airbnb is expected to report an adjusted EBITDA loss of $132.86 million in the fourth quarter on revenue of $739.37 million, according to Bloomberg consensus data. That would compare to an adjusted EBITDA loss of $276.39 million in the same period of 2019, on revenue of $1.1 billion.

Meanwhile, DoorDash is set to report fourth-quarter results following a similarly strong run-up since its December public debut. DoorDash shares have more than doubled since its initial public offering in early December.
DoorDash has been an unequivocal beneficiary during the pandemic period, as consumers sheltering in place increasingly ordered food for delivery rather than going out to restaurants.
Though DoorDash has largely been a money-losing business, the company briefly posted net income in the second quarter of 2020, aided by an influx of demand during the height of stay-in-place orders last spring. The company’s revenue also swelled, ballooning by more than 200% in the nine months ending in September over the same period in 2019.
However, DoorDash has also had to contend with an inundation of competition in the food delivery space, which has impacted the companies’ pricing power and profit-making potential.
UberEats, for instance, has also grown significantly over the course of the pandemic. In results reported earlier this month, Uber revealed that its food delivery business grew gross bookings by 130%, suggesting still-elevated food delivery trends in the final three months of last year. Whether this demand will remain in place once more vaccines roll out and in-person dining reopenings more extensively, however, remains to be seen.
Consensus analysts expect DoorDash to post an adjusted EBITDA profit of $95.64 million in the fourth quarter on revenue of $926.41 million, according to Bloomberg data. That would compare to an adjusted EBITDA loss of $103 million on revenue of $298 million in the same period in 2019.

Look ahead to the reveals of pictures making my 2020 calendar line ups
Please note the pictures in this photoset are not ones I’ve chosen to go on the calendar currently but are 5 reserve pictures for each of my calendars from the ones eligible just in case I had a change of heart.
I am writing this on Saturday morning as a kind of update post on where I am with choosing the pictures to go on my 2020 wildlife and landscape & outdoor calendars which are calendars I make of pictures I’ve taken for my Christmas presents that go on my bedroom wall.
Currently I have my 13 pictures provisionally chosen for my wildlife 2020 calendar with 5 reserves in place, all wildlife pictures I take now are going into my 2021 calendar folder with some “wildcards” already placed there of pictures taken over recent weeks which perhaps didn’t get a fair chance to appear on this calendar as I was stuck into choosing the pictures taken from this time last year up until now. The line up will be finalized really on the 17th May which I have set as my calendar deadline, until then I might have a reverse wildcard whereby if I take a picture I see as really strong and feel I can squeeze it into the calendar and it suits it better than another etc. I can action this, if I really feel I want to do this between that date and when I aim to post the line ups in social media in June I might too but I am yet to ever do this for any of my calendars so don’t really envisage it. I can say that currently a wildcard picture taken in March 2018 is on my 2020 landscape line up with pictures taken on them from a wide range of months from then up until March 2019 so it shows the pictures taken in the latter halves of years do get chances for the next calendar.
I’m a bit further behind with landscape and outdoors in that I have just put the final pictures I wanted onto my provisional line up with reserves confirmed, but I (from Saturday when I’m writing this) will give it a few days to settle before I start putting new pictures into the 2021 calendar folder.
The reason I am now choosing and revealing the calendars at this time in years by the way is the hot and long days of summer is a difficult time to be sat in front of my screen picking the pictures and September is when I make the calendars which become Christmas presents for me and time really flies up until Christmas from that point so it ensures I can get them all ready.
Any pictures taken from now and after this point in 2018 have had or will have a shot at making one of my calendars, just the next year’s one. This year I introduced a new rule that the 2020 calendars had to have at least 5 from 2018 and at least 5 from 2019 of the 13 pictures to keep it fair. It worked with currently 7 from 2018 and 6 from 2019 on my wildlife calendar and 8 from 2018 and 5 from 2019 on landscape and outdoors.
Its obviously the pictures of mine I feel are best quality I chose but its become largely about picking a squad of pictures to come together with variety across my subjects. Every wildlife calendar I make must have at least one still bird, flying bird, butterfly and mammal picture. Every landscape and outdoors one I say must contain at least one landscape, sky or cloud dominated picture and one of my minority subjects (such as trees, flowers, mushrooms, water etc.)
Now onto the important part, the reveals. On 13th June I’ll aim to do on my Twitter Dans_Pictures post the 13 pictures on my landscape and outdoor pictures calendar in the evening, and same for wildlife on 14th June. On the following Monday and Tuesday as usual I’ll have the two photosets for each calendar with the pictures making it as a post for Tumblr followers and recap for Twitter followers if needed. It will be around this time of day. I’m pretty sure no one really knows me on Facebook on here so not too relevant but my first postings of the calendars will likely be putting them in Facebook albums as I usually do somewhen after 17th May which will in effect finalize the lineups.
With the Twitter reveals I am changing the format this year and not tweeting all the pictures individually, but doing this for the cover with a note saying what I’ll be doing and then in reply to this tweet posting four pictures in each of three tweets. So the pictures on the calendar for January-April, May-August and September-December. This is just something I wanted to trial really and as I only put pictures together in tweets when they’re new if they’re of the same species or a similar view it makes it stand out to things I normally tweet. It should also make it quicker so if I was pushed for time on the night or had to move the reveals around I could do it more easily.
Ending where I started with the disclaimer, the wildlife calendar reserves in order of appearance in this photoset are; one of my favouirte birds the Guillemot at Bempton Cliffs last June, Pied Wagtail during the Big Garden Birdwatch 2019, Brimstone at Millyford Bridge in late June 2018, Red Deer at Richmond Park in October 2018 and Meadow Brown butterfly at Standing Hat in the New Forest last June. The landscapes and others are, water at Thursley Common last August, snowy path at Blackwater in the New Forest this February, Arne last August too, a wave at Fort Cumberland in March this year and a view looking towards the Isle of Wight at Pennington the same month.
I’m doubtful any of these will actually end up appearing on one of the calendars but if so they’ll obviously get a double posting. I have done reserves in the past it just leaves five there just in case I change my mind. I thought I would include them in this post to decorate it and if I carry on doing these for the calendar every year it gives them something tangible for still standing out among a year’s worth of my pictures but not quite making it.
