Invasion
Doom Patrol #12
Spectacular.
"Five people in an unarmed shuttle. It's nuts!"
Big battle issue, where the team goes into space to rescue Robotman and battle the invading aliens who threaten Earth. It's works amazingly well because all of the regular characters are a lot of fun. What they are doing is dangerous, they are barely surviving and we are invested in their fates. I really love these scrappy underdog heroes; I keep expecting someone to die.
Paul Kupperberg (14 of 22).
Erik Larsen (8 of 11).

I'm so grateful
For the love that we share
I'll never take it for granted
That you're always there
And when I think about the world
And what is going on
It makes me even more thankful
That you're still around
And I've been waiting all my life
For someone I could stand
And you're the only one so far
Who could understand
And what I'm feelin' in my heart
Feelin' in my soul
I couldn't ever hope to tell you
I'm sure you must know

Fatal Distraction
Wild Dog
[Action Comics #615 - 622]
Smart.
Serial killer killing men on the singles scene.
Pages 1-28: As well as a crime plot and plenty of gun action, this story has some smart ideas. First off, we have a kid setting out to be WD's sidekick. Something nobody is happy about. This is really well done. Then, we have WD adapting his modus operandi to work the new crime. He also starts a journal. Nice way to get us inside his head.
Pages 29-56: The serial killer storyline is pushed to the background, as WD and (unwanted) sidekick take out a gunman holding hostages. The script keeps moral considerations to the forefront. Eventually both main stories (sidekick, serial killer) intersect. It's predictable that the kid would get himself badly injured. What happens afterwards is not predictable, however. And it makes for a strong ending.
