There is a possibility that Sephiroth pre-Nibelheim was on medication for some sort of psychological issue that could be anxiety / insomnia / depression / ptsd / (paranoid) schizophrenia, etc., or even a certain combination of these. Not taking his medications for 7 days in the basement library could worsen his condition a lot. It could be easily an intentional act on his side to stop taking them cause at that point he didn't intend to be collected and couldn't care less about his public image either.
