Mini-review:

Well, that was a ride. It wasn't perfect by any means, with its main problem being an incredibly uneven pacing, but I just couldn't stop watching. The cast is amazing enough to keep you hooked. In particular, Chun Woo Hee seemed like she was having the time of her life playing her role. But one thing's for sure: this show is not for the squeamish. I didn't expect it to take things so far, to showcase such cruel and mean types of violence. While I guess that was sort of the point, it's so unsubtle that the main themes of the story tend to get lost in the shuffle. Anyway, The 8 Show is fantastically acted and pretty entertaining, even if its lack of subtlety and violent sense of humor won't be for everyone.

The 8 Show, based on Bae Jin Soo's webtoon Money Game, stars Ryu Jun-yeol, Chun Woo-hee, Park Jeong-min, Lee Yul-eum, Park Hae-joon, Lee Zoo-young, Moon Jeong-hee, and Bae Seong-woo. The series is created by Han Jae-rim.

In Defense of Lady Kang/Queen Sindeok (1/3)

As promised, here's the first part of my defense of Queen Sindeok, explaining her historical political situation + clearing up some common fandom misconceptions about her, which I don't blame anyone for since they originate from the show itself. I must admit that I have a bit of a soft spot for her since history generally tends to be unkind to women - this extends to modern media and MCTNA is no exception:

Before we start, I thought I'd give a small refresher on the Yi family constellation - crucial for setting up the conflict and crown prince issue - with the aid of this extremely useful graphic by bodashiri (excluding the daughters for simplicity's sake):

As you can see, Yi Seong-gye (King Taejo of Joseon) had two wives:

His first wife Lady Han (Queen Sinui) gave birth to six sons: 1. Yi Bang-woo (Prince Jinan), 2. Yi Bang-gwa (Prince Youngan), 3. Yi Bang-ui (Prince Yikan), 4. Yi Bang-gan (Prince Hoean), 5. Yi Bang-won (Prince Jeongan) and 6. Yi Bang-yeon (Prince Deokan).

His second wife Lady Kang (Queen Sindeok) gave birth to two sons: 7. Yi Bang-beon (Prince Muan) and 8. Yi Bang-seok (Prince Uian),

meaning that Seong-gye had eight sons overall.

With that out of the way, let's get started!!!

1. Queen Sindeok was NOT a concubine

She is referred to as Yi Seong-gye/King Taejo's capital/Seoul wife in the show too:

However, every time Bang-won calls her a concubine and her children illegitimate there is never any pushback or correction by anyone, not even when he calls her younger son Bang-seok/Prince Uian a ‘seoja’ (illegitimate child born to a commoner concubine or royal concubine) in front of Seon-ho:

You'd think Seon-ho would defend Bang-seok by correcting Bang-won... but nope. Nada.

Not even Queen Sindeok (!!!) is allowed to defend herself and her children when they get accused of the same:

Anyone who doesn't know about Korean history would never even SUSPECT that this isn’t actually true, and that Queen Sindeok is in fact a legitimate second wife and queen. By giving no pushback to the (false) claims of illegitimacy, the show seems to implicitly support Bang-won’s narrative of her being a lying, conniving, greedy bitch who wants to push her child on the throne despite having no right to it whatsoever as a concubine and bastard respectively.

Queen Sindeok's tragedy, the one that MCTNA fails to portray, is not that she was a concubine who tried to rise above her station (because she was not); it's that, due to the transition from Goryeo to Joseon, she found herself caught between two conflicting sets of laws:

A queen while alive, and unjustly demoted to a concubine in death by Bang-won/King Taejong who used these legal changes and the new Confucian ruling to his advantage, her status was a matter of contention for scholars and kings alike for almost 300 years, until finally, in 1669, the scholar Song Si-yeol managed to amass enough people and put enough pressure on King Hyeonjong to make him give in to their demands and restore Queen Sindeok to her rightful status and honor as queen.

The Glory

-Gonna be honest, I only started watching because Kim Hieora and Jung Sung Il are in this show.

-But I ended up really liking it. The bullying scenes were horrifying, the characters were memorable, and overall it was very well made.

Stranger

-HWANG SIMOK! I love him so much! BAE DOONA! I love her so much!

-I loved all the characters and all the twists

Stranger 2

-This season was good too. Seeing the dynamics and relationships between all the characters change was so interesting

Unlocked

-IM SIWAN! The reason why I watched this movie <3

-Is it the best and most unique movie? No. Was it pretty good and entertaining? Yeah!

All Of Us Are Dead

-Even in the zombie apocalypse they’re not free of bullying.

-My heart broke many times. Those poor kids didn’t deserve to go through all of that! (Except Na Yeon. I still don’t like her.)

The Glory Part 2

-Not the typical type of revenge. But I think it’s a very fitting ending.

Physical 100

-This show inspired me to start taking better care of myself.

-Watching everyone hype up this show so much then watching all the controversies come out in real time was crazy. Looking forward to season 2

Kingdom

-This show was on my radar because that zombie dude from Physical 100 said he did the choreography

-I love all of the characters and the zombies were so freaky

Kingdom 2

-The Queen might’ve been the scariest part of this show

-I love this show, season 3? Maybe?

Kingdom: Ashin of the North

-Han Ho Yeol from DP?!?!

-It was really interesting seeing another side to this story

Silent Sea

-BAE DOONA! GONG YOO!

-I don’t understand why this flopped. I really liked this show!

Siren: Survive The Island

-I was team athlete til the end! (I thought Kim Seong Yeon was hot)

-If there isn’t a season 2 I’m going to fight Netflix

-I think I need to watch this a second time to really analyze it.

-I really like the sfx makeup

-I really liked the twist and how eerie the vibes were

-I love unreliable narrators. Not knowing what’s real and what isn’t really puts you on the end he of your seat

The Policeman’s Lineage

-I only watched this for Kwon Yul

-Decent story but I feel like it fell short of its potential

Hansel and Gretel

-Solid start but I didn’t realize that it was going in the direction that it did

-Not the ending that I expected but I’m satisfied with it

-Honestly, they were so over dramatic when it came to the bdsm stuff. Like okay, he’s kinky. That’s the least concerning thing about him.

-My mom got me to watch this because she likes Kim Ji Hoon

The Mimic

-Interesting concept with interesting characters

-The ending was so fitting, I’m very satisfied with it

-Another movie I watched for Kwon Yul

-I really like this movie, it’s very comforting and funny

-This is a cautionary tale, you cannot tell me otherwise!

-I was SHOCKED! It was just so sudden. I don’t know how to explain it without spoiling what happened.

-Interesting. I’m not sure what I expected from this season but this wasn’t it.

-I found it entertaining but I’m not quite sure if I like how they’re approaching this new thing that they’re doing.

Sihyun : what is your plan with my sister?

Seonghwa turned around to face sihyun, who was standing behind him with a scowl. Seonghwa sighed. He had been waiting outside siyeol's house yet another Sunday, hoping she would take less time to get herself ready. But of course, she had to be late.

Seonghwa : I have no plans, sihyun.

Sihyun : really. That's why you've promised to take her out on every single Sunday?

Seonghwa : it's only for 2 more months, and then we'll be done. I figured I owed her this one last thing before leaving.

Sihyun : oh so you're just going to leave after your last date with her?

Seonghwa : yes, I'll not contact her anymore.

Sihyun : you're going to break her heart again if you do that, you idiot. Why did you even agree to this arrangement in the first place if you were just going to fucking leave!

Seonghwa : then what the hell am I supposed to do, sihyun! Every single day I am burdened with the fact that I was the reason siyeol lost her memories, that…that I deserve to just burn in hell for all that I have done to her. But when she asked me for this promise I couldn't…

Sihyun : stop yourself from giving in to her? Yeah, she has that way with people. But you're supposed to have some will-power, seonghwa. You're supposed to not be close to her when you know what happened the last time.

Seonghwa : which is why I'm leaving. Yes, it might break her heart. But a broken heart is better than a broken body. And hence I will leave, you can find someone else for siyeol after that. Someone who isn't a curse.

Seonghwa : do you want the ice-cream or not.

Siyeol : I want the strawberry one! Not stupid chocholate.

Seonghwa : the strawberry one is over, siyeol-ah, why won't you understand-

Siyeol : then I'm not having it.

Seonghwa : aish, don't be such a child. Just have this ice-cream, no?

Siyeol : no.

Seonghwa let out an exasperated breath, pressing his lips together as he looked at the ice-cream cup in his hand and back at siyeol who was sitting in a bench in an amusement park they had both come up to, her arms folded and a small frown on her face. She was being stubborn, and cute. But stubborn.

Seonghwa : do you really want strawberry ice-cream?

Siyeol nodded. Seonghwa sighed, throwing the chocholate ice-cream aside before bending down and picking siyeol up. Siyeol yelped, wrapping her arms around the back of seonghwa's neck and her legs around his torso. Seonghwa piggy-backed her effortlessly, walking to the nearby convenience store.

Siyeol : okay damn I did not expect you do this.

Seonghwa : you were being such a brat, I couldn't really help it.

Siyeol giggled, wrapping her arms tighter around seonghwa's neck as she rested her head against his shoulder. She had been running around rides in the amusement park for an entire day, she felt like she could fall asleep any second. But she had to keep herself awake for the ice-cream, it was always her favorite part.

Seonghwa finally emerged out of the store with a cup of strawberry ice-cream, setting it down on the table before sitting opposite siyeol. She smiled and started eating the ice-cream, her eyes shining. This was all that seonghwa wanted, to see her happy. He hadn't been able to do that in the past, maybe he could try now.

Seonghwa : eat slowly, no one's going to take anything away from you.

Siyeol : you? Do you not want ice-cream?

Seonghwa : I don't like it.

Siyeol : really.

Seonghwa just stared at siyeol, trying to show her how serious he was. Siyeol sighed and got up, walking towards seonghwa before bending down in front of him. She brought a scoop of ice-cream to seonghwa's lips and said

Siyeol : try some then.

Seonghwa : I told you I don’t like it. It's literally just frozen milk, siyeol.

Siyeol : will you have it, or no?

Seonghwa : I won't.

Siyeol nodded, eating the ice-cream before leaning forward, pressing her lips against seonghwa's. his eyes widened in pure shock, his entire body frozen. That gave siyeol advantage, allowing her to kiss seonghwa deeper before pulling back a few seconds later. She swiped the rest of the ice-cream off the corner of his lip before asking with a small smile

Siyeol : does it taste good now?

Seonghwa opened his mouth, wanting to say something. But he was too shocked, no words came out of his mouth.

Siyeol : it's fine, take your time pretty boy.

This time an audible gasp left seonghwa's lips at the use of that name, his eyes turning to siyeol in bewilderment.

Seonghwa : si-siyeol, you cannot do things like that to me.

Siyeol : like what, kiss you or calling you pretty?

Seonghwa : both!

Siyeol : that's unfortunate, then. I rather liked kissing you.

Seonghwa : stop saying that.

Siyeol : why, because you look like a tomato right now?

Seonghwa quickly covered his cheeks with both his hands, making siyeol chuckle at how adorable he was being.

Siyeol : tell me you didn't like it.

Seonghwa : what?

Siyeol took another bite of her ice-cream, saying seriously

Siyeol : tell me you didn't like it and I won’t ever do it again.

Seonghwa blinked his eyes, knowing well enough that he liked it. But was he going to tell her the truth?

Siyeol : do not even think about lying to me.

Seonghwa : what if I remain silent?

Siyeol : then I'm just going to think you liked it.

Seonghwa did not utter a word after that.

Seonghwa stepped into his bathroom after having slipped his shirt off, finally having come back from his…date, he supposed, with siyeol. And as soon as his upper bare body became visible in the mirror, his earlier cheeky smile disappeared, that being replaced with empty eyes. The same scars, the same marks, and the same him. Why did he keep forgetting it when he was with siyeol, why did he keep forgetting that at the end of the day, he was only a loser who couldn't defend himself from anything. He did poorly at standing up for himself, he let everyone have their own way with him and these marks were proof.

Seonghwa ran his finger along an already healed cut, still feeling the pain he first felt when it had appeared

"Please! I-I haven't done anything wrong today, please don't do this"

"You haven't done anything wrong? Your entire existence is a wrong itself, park seonghwa. We have every right to hit you or abuse you in whatever way we want"

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry-"

"You're sorry for what, you little pig?"

"I'm…I'm sorry I was born. I'm sorry I came to this company, I'm sorry for everything"

"If you're really sorry, then take these hits like the good little dumbfuck you are without making much fuss, hmm?"

Seonghwa flinched as he looked away from the mirror, coming back into this word. He stepped into the shower with a shaky breath, trying not to think about it.

Forget, he told himself, move the fuck on. But how could he, when the reminders of them kept haunting him at every time of the day.

A month later :

Siyeol was walking back home after work, scrolling through her phone while listening to music. It was a Friday and she was already tired from work. She had lost all her memories, but apparently not the ones related to work. And she only figured that out once she had actually reached her office and started going through her old works. Things just seemed to come back to her.

She wished things were that way with people too.

??? : siyeol-ie, hi!

Siyeol looked up with a frown, 4 boys walking up to her with smiles on their faces. Four boys she recognized from high-school, the ones she usually avoided.

??? : heard you lost your memories?

Siyeol sighed and nodded, taking her Airpods off as she said

Siyeol : I still remember all of you, though. Didn't really lose all of my memories, just a few years.

??? : really. Then you must remember your boyfriend?

Siyeol : my…what?

??? : you don't remember little seonghwa?

Siyeol scoffed, looking away as she whispered to herself

Siyeol : I knew it.

??? : knew what?

Siyeol : thank you! All of you, really.

One of the boys opened their mouth to say something but was cut off siyeol ran past them, knowing exactly where she needed to go.

Seonghwa had just finished washing his plates when he heard the doorbell ring multiple times, making him frown. No one was supposed to come at this time into his house.

Seonghwa peeked through the peep hole, quickly flinching and stepping back with a gasp as another eye stared right back at him through it. Siyeol, it had to be her.

Seonghwa opened the door to his house, frowning at siyeol who was staring at him blankly.

Seonghwa : siyeol, what are you doing here? It's not a sun-

Siyeol : you used to be my boyfriend.

Seonghwa's eyes widened as siyeol let herself inside his house, removing her jacket as she said

Siyeol : why did you lie to me. Did I do something wrong?

Seonghwa stood there frozen, wondering whether she had gotten back her memories. But if she had, would she even want to see him?

Seonghwa : you…your memories-

Siyeol : no, a friend of mine told me this. I still haven't…seonghwa.

Seonghwa looked up at siyeol, his hands clenched behind his back.

Siyeol : did you…do something wrong?

Seonghwa looked away.

Siyeol : because if you did, unless it directly caused my accident, I do not care.

Seonghwa : w-what?

Siyeol : I want you back. I want us back, hwa.

Seonghwa : we can't.

Siyeol : do you love me?

Seonghwa : siyeol, I'm not supposed to-

Siyeol : DO, YOU, LOVE, ME SEONGHWA?

There was no way out for him now. Seonghwa bit his lips, looking away as he muttered under his breath

Seonghwa : of course I do.

Siyeol : then date me.

Seonghwa stared at siyeol, being at a loss of words.

Seonghwa : you do not want that.

Siyeol : yes, I do. There's nothing I want more.

Seonghwa : your brother is going to kill me for this.

Siyeol : then I'll protect you. It's going to be us against the world, hwa. I'm going to shield you from everything until my last breath, I promise.

Seonghwa looked away, tears falling down his eyes. God, he didn't deserve any of this from her. But he wanted it so bad. Siyeol walked forward, cupping seonghwa's cheek before whispering

Siyeol : I love you. The old siyeol loved you, and this one loves you none the less. Please, come back to me.

Seonghwa let out a breath and kissed her, his eyebrows scrunching as he lifted her and placed her on a nearby table. Siyeol wrapped her arms around his, kissing him back with the same amount of desperation.

Seonghwa : from now on, I'm going to correct all my mistakes.

3 months later :

It was happening all over again, seonghwa and siyeol in a relationship. Except this time seonghwa was being an ideal boyfriend. He'd call her up at midnight, saying he was outside her house and couldn't sleep without her arms around him, he'd take her out on more dates that didn't just include their usual Sunday ones, and he'd accompany her home from work. He did everything for her.

Sihyun didn't like it one bit, but his sister seemed to have a glow on her face that had been absent for a very long time. And he couldn't muster up the courage to tear seonghwa away from her and cause her pain.

Except he knew some day her memories were going to come back, and neither siyeol nor seonghwa would be the same way again. This was only for a short period of time.

Seonghwa was now walking around the streets with siyeol clinging onto his arm, sipping on her banana milk with a satisfied smile. Seonghwa looked up at the sky, squinting his eyes at the amount of sunlight. He hated being hot.

Seonghwa : damn, it's sunny.

Siyeol : but we're on a date.

Seonghwa : still…sunny.

Siyeol whacked seonghwa's arm, making him giggle as he leaned his head against the top of siyeol's and said

Seonghwa : I never said I wanted to go back home, yeol-ie. It's sunny, but I'll suffer it happily since you're with me.

Siyeol smiled, taking another sip of her banana milk before saying

Siyeol : I don't want this to ever end.

Seonghwa : your banana milk? If it does end I can just buy a new on-

Siyeol : aish not that, you idiot. I meant us, our relationship.

Seonghwa : oh, you don't ever have to worry about that. I'm gonna stick to you like superglue, unless you ask me to…unstick myself.

Siyeol giggled, sighing as she looked towards the road with a small smile. Her smile soon disappeared as she noticed a truck coming towards a car that was going past them, the truck driver clearly unaware of the car that was speeding faster than allowed.

Siyeol : NO-

Siyeol cut herself off with a gasp as the truck hit the car with a bang, the car being turned upside down as she the people around quickly stepped away to avoid being hurt. Seonghwa's eyes widened, quickly moving siyeol away from the road as he covered her with his body.

Soon enough the car had stopped moving, the truck driver jumping out of his vehicle and rushing towards the vehicle with a worried look on his face. Seonghwa turned to face siyeol, who seemed to be hyperventilating and staring at the sight in front of her with torn eyes.

Seonghwa : siyeol, are you okay?

Siyeol was breathing heavily, her head suddenly starting to hurt as she stared at the car that was turned upside down, a crowd gathering around it and trying to hoist the injured person out of the car.

"H-Help me"

"MISS CAN YOU HEAR ME?"

"C-Can't breathe"

"You're going to be alright, we're going to get you help. Okay?"

Siyeol moaned in pain, her legs giving in underneath her as she lost balance. Seonghwa quickly caught her, lowering the both of them to the floor as he held siyeol's cheek, eyeing her with worried eyes now starting to fill up with tears

Seonghwa : yeol-ah, what's wrong!

Siyeol looked up at seonghwa with hazy eyes, her head hurting more than ever as a thousand memories of them flashed through her mind. Her, crying over the things seonghwa never did for her, and him, caring the least.

Siyeol : you…seonghwa.

Seonghwa's eyes widened as siyeol fell unconscious in his arms, her body going limp. His hand tightened around hers, tears starting to fall down his eyes as seonghwa realized.

She'd gotten her memories back.
