Michiko Kuwano and Shuji Sano in What Did the Lady Forget? (Yasujiro Ozu, 1937)
Cast: Sumiko Kurishima, Tatsuo Saito, Michiko Kuwano, Shuji Sano, Takeshi Sakamoto, Choko Iida, Ken Uehara, Mitsuko Yosshikawa, Masao Hayama, Tomio Aoki, Mitsuko Higashiyama. Screenplay: Akira Fushimi, Yasujiro Ozu. Cinematography: Yuharu Atsuta, Hideo Shigehara. Film editing: Kenkichi Hara. Music: Senji Ito.
The denouement of this early Ozu talkie is rather unfortunate: a man slaps his wife and makes her behave. It's a throwback to the marital dynamics of the era of domestic comedy when gags were milked from the relationship of a henpecked husband and a shrewish wife. Otherwise, What Did the Lady Forget? is an amusing glimpse at the conflict of tradition and modernity in pre-war Japan. A mild-mannered university professor (Tatsuo Saito) is married to a woman (Sumiko Kurishima) conscious of propriety and her station in society. When his modernized, free-thinking niece (Michiko Kuwano) comes to visit, the two women immediately are at odds, and the professor is caught in their conflict. It's a sly, sophisticated movie, influenced, as many have noted, by the films of Ernst Lubitsch, but with Ozu's own distinctive style prevailing, so much so that it's easy to forgive the retrograde element of the plot resolution. So what did the lady forget? It's not an easy question to answer, but some think it's the wife's failure to compromise with her husband's less restrictive view of his niece's behavior.

— as the leader, he sets an example to his members; quiet, reserved, and very smart. (he's actually very stupid but we don't talk about that.)
— his hands are clean, meaning he lets his underlings do the killing for him. but most of everything happening underworld, is his doing.
— he pushes the girls away at every bar he owns. nobody knows why but shinichirou does.
— uses the heels of his high heels to deepen the wounds on his enemy.
— "i hate people" in the morning, "shin-chan where are you i need your hug" in the evening
— no member of the yakuza knows what he's thinking, not even if he wants iced or hot coffee
— he still trips on his high heels. everyday.
— he probably takes 2 cigarettes per day, shinichirou will scold him if he exceeds the maximum amount of cigs shinichirou allows him to take every day. it annoyed him at first but he got used to it...or he's too scared for the punishment (he received it once, and he'll never want to obtain it again)
— from the "white leopard" to the "blood-stained leopard" (shinichirou calls him ube-cheese leopard)
— the only one he can rely on is shinichirou. benkei's in another country and they have no contact with him anymore and takeomi's nowhere to be seen.
— the only person he's scared off is shinichirou. really, shin acts more like the boss rather than wakasa
— no coffee = bad mornings
— his hair is dry from all the dyeing.
— who says he doesn't wear a dress? ok, no one. he wears a dress. and he has this specific favourite because it perfectly shows the tattoo on his chest, arms, and back. and yes, those trendy silk dresses that reach the floor are his favourite. and always in purple. he sometimes forces- i mean persuades shinichirou to join him in parties and meetings wearing a figure-hugging black button-up and a purple silk vest to compliment him. (and oh my, nothing happened after that...)
— he once choked on an orange during a very important meeting.
— the earring he's wearing was a pair, but he saved the other one for his favourite person. you don't need to guess who he gave it to when he was sixteen. shinichirou lost it because of mikey and he went all over japan just to find a new one and give the other to shin. but they didn't find the specific pair and commissioned a jeweller to make a specific one with the finest quality. (he didn't care how much was it, he just wanted to give it to shin.)

Perfect nature scenes by Kazuyuki Ohtsu.
Kazuyuki Ohtsu was born in Isezaki City in Gunma Prefecture in 1935. He began to learn the art of traditional woodblock printmaking in 1954. And although he had several exhibitions of his own while he was still working for Kiyoshi Saito, he did not dare to really come forward until the death of his "master" in 1997. Such behaviour is typical for Japanese people to whom the loyalty towards the "master" has been regarded as one of the highest virtues since Japan's medieval ages.
Kazuyuki Ohtsu works in a style that is typical for some of Japan's contemporary woodblock printmakers. Rural landscapes, old farmhouses, traditional Japanese scenes like stone gardens, nature scenes. One can find several artists practicing this style especially in the Kyoto area like for instance Joshua Rome (now back in the United States), Tatsuo Kawashima, Shufu Miyamoto, Masao Ido, Sano Seiji or Yamataka Noboru to name just a few. What these artists have all in common. They show a nostalgic, romantic Japan of the past and they work in woodblock technique.

Isao Shirasawa, Chishu Ryu, Chieko Higashiyama, Setsuko Hara, Ichiro Sugai, Kuniko Miyake, and Zen Murase in Early Summer (Yasujiro Ozu, 1951) Cast: Setsuko Hara, Chishu Ryu, Chikage Awashima, Kuniko Miyake, Ichiro Sugai, Chieko Higashiyama, Haruko Sugimura, Kuniko Igawa, Hiroshi Nihon'yanagi. Shuji Sano, Toyo Takahashi, Seiji Miyaguchi. Screenplay: Kogo Noda, Yasujiro Ozu. Cinematography: Yuharu Atsuta. Art direction: Tatsuo Hamada. Film editing: Yoshiyasu Hamamura. Music: Senji Ito. Early Summer is the second of the "seasonal" films made by Yasujiro Ozu in what is now recognized as his peak postwar period. The first was Late Spring (1949), and they were followed by Early Spring (1956), Late Autumn (1960), The End of Summer (1961), and An Autumn Afternoon (1962). I mention this chiefly because the English-language titles confuse even Ozu's hard-core admirers, among whom I count myself. "Was that Early Summer or The End of Summer?" we find ourselves asking when we're talking about Ozu's films. The confusion is further compounded by the fact that four of them starred the marvelous Setsuko Hara. It also doesn't help that the name of her character in Early Summer is Noriko, which was the name of her characters in Late Spring and Tokyo Story (Ozu, 1953). So we have to remind ourselves that in Early Summer she is Noriko Mamiya, the unmarried 28-year-old daughter of Shukichi (Ichiro Sugai) and Shige Mamiya (Chieko Higashiyama). She lives with them as well as with her brother, Koichi (Chishu Ryu), and sister-in-law, Fumiko (Kuniko Miyake), and their two bratty sons. She also has a well-paying clerical job and a group of old girlfriends from her schooldays. So why does everyone, even her boss, want her to get married? When her boss starts arranging things with an old business friend of his, her family encourages the connection, even though she's never met the man and he's in his early 40s. Noriko has a mind of her own, however, and eventually surprises everyone -- perhaps even herself -- with her decision. It's a comedy-drama in which nothing exciting happens -- even key events like the search for the bratty boys when they decide to run away from home take place mostly off-screen -- but Ozu holds everything in such delicate suspension, allowing us to meditate on the relationships at length, that we get caught up in the everyday lives of the film's huge cast. There are some wonderful scenes between Noriko and her girlfriends, who share the kind of in-jokes that old friends everywhere have. Some of these are lost in translation, but even that reminds us of real life, when we're left out of a group's established routines. And sometimes the subtitles wittily help us out, finding equivalents for the hick accents Noriko and her friend adopt when talking about the possibility of moving from Tokyo to the country. Ozu and co-screenwriter Kogo Noda bring the characters to life in their private moments, as when Shukichi and Shige talk wistfully about the son who remained MIA after the war, or when they see a balloon floating ahead and reflect on how sad the child who lost it must be. No filmmaker had a profounder sense of the inner lives of people in their ordinary routine.
