all i can say forever
i'm jewish. as a child i moved from a rural town where my family saw acts of rage and hate, emigrated from a country with a horrifying history with jews. you know the one, though there are many. i'm 31 now and i have seen and experienced antisemitism my whole life, in the many places i've lived, to varying degrees. not that i should need to qualify this before everything i have to say - but i know what that looks and feels like. in my life there have been times at which i have been in danger. i choose to stay out of danger in all the ways i was taught. (part of that is not moving into someone else's house uninvited (more in a sec))
(well-meaning?) people want me to have a relationship with israel. they are very invested in assuming i have some connection to this shifting space, this project. they associate my german jewishness with a place i have never been and never felt. home, for me, is the uncle i haven't seen in too long, the ailing brother of my mother, the same red nose. it's fresh sheets hung over dry summer grass, it's bavarian farmland, it's thick liptauer on pumpernickel bread warmed over the wood stove. it's my grandmother's dining room and rough fenceposts, borders we disrespected as kids. home is also here and there and where my family is, where my friends are, where i've built myself.
in a geopolitical sense, it is clear that the antisemitic position is to sequester jews into a partitioned state conceived of by non-jews after the sunset of our most recent attempted decimation. antisemitic, to tell jews "move here, be at home in this space of constant war. impose war on others. fight for a tenuous link to an ancestry you've never seen or studied." in a religious sense, sort of a key feature of judaism since the second exile is that - we're in exile. this is an orthodox argument, but i have to admit that rabbinical discourse is pretty convincing. the secular establishment of the israeli state in an attempt to accelerate any so-called redemption has left us at a point where i really don't know what hope we have for that to occur. if you believe in god, how can you believe they are looking down at us, impressed
because beyond theoretical or spiritual reasons, the bloodlust, the vengefulness, the racism, the violation of law (i know that laws are agreed upon, are broken all the time by those who grant themselves impunity), the evil of this continuance, the evil which grinds babies and text and memory, gnashes it all in its droning machinery, its cold horror and inhumane (unhuman) practice, seemingly perfected... it is obvious to anyone with a single thought that it is an ethnic cleansing. the forcible "movement" (murder) of people of one group from land people of another group want. is ethnic cleansing. we are watching it in real time, and the world stands by and in many cases, it endorses, it beats and imprisons those who are brave enough to stand up to it, it rewards cowardly men in war rooms who having read fukuyama and arendt and maybe even voegelin conveniently forget themselves, because they can afford to, and wave their hands and make calls and decimate entire families cities sovereignties. and liberalism - that fickle ideology whose sole search is for the justification of atrocity - sends its thoughts and prayers, and emphasizes how just horrible both sides are, and conveniently forgets the histories that have led each "side" to this. convenient.
and i can't do anything about it. i can perfectly articulate every well-thought-out argument, i can cry the most frustrated tears from the well of my chest and i can scream that this isn't right, because it isn't, but nobody fucking cares. those who matter have decided for those who don't.
if you align yourself with israel, or feel any sympathy toward the supposed plight of active settlers (not a neutral spot to be in, by the way - another rational argument), i hope you know how thoroughly you've been manipulated. how successful the project of those with the power to decide we don't matter has been. you and i don't matter. so-called free thinkers meme. you fucking idiot. you genocidal maniac.
not putting this under a cut. fuck you. read it all and remember my jewish name and keep it far out of your mouth the next time you tell someone why the people you've told me are my neighbors deserve a flattening.

The droughtula is lasting forever so here are some headcanons about Dracula's characters' politics.
Arthur Holmwood (Lord Godalming) Let's get the difficult one out of the way first. Arthur is nobility, a hereditary peer in the House of Lords, in the 1890s. He's literally entitled to a say on legislation solely because of who his ancestors were. So he's unlikely to have views that we'd find sympathetic in 2023, and is probably a Tory.
He's well-travelled and outward-looking, so I think his greatest political concern is empire. He's eager to ensure that Britain is victorious in the Scramble for Africa, concerned about growing tensions with the Boers in South Africa, and admires the leadership of Lord Salisbury.
(sorry about this)
Jonathan Harker I think Jonathan is and always will be aware of how lucky he's been, as an orphan who's then catapulted into vast wealth thanks to the generosity of Mr Hawkins. As a result, I think he would be very keen to support others and generally vote for a government that's focused on the eradication of poverty. At the same time, I don't think he would be particularly radical; I think he would shy away from revolutionary thinking.
I see him finding reasonably a happy home in the 1890s Liberals, and supporting the beginnings of the welfare state in the early 1900s. He might even join the Fabian Society. By the 1920s, his sympathies would shift to the Labour Party.
Mina Harker I've written a bit about Mina's politics already. The obvious question is what she thinks of women's suffrage, and I'm inclined to say that her view is that women should have the vote one day, but not yet. At least, not at a national level; I think she'd support the move in the 1890s to allow women to vote in local elections. She would be more focused on women's access to education, so that when the time came for them to get the vote, they would be educated enough to use it wisely.
Unfortunately one other thing we know about Mina is that she's interested in physiognomy, a pseudoscience that's connected to eugenics. So it's depressingly plausible that a real-life Mina would have an interest in eugenics as well.
Lucy Westenra I think Lucy is probably less politically aware than Mina is, but also quite possibly more radical in her views. After all, we see more of Lucy chafing against her social role than we do Mina (though Lucy's life is also a lot more restricted than Mina's). As an upper-middle or upper-class woman, doing charitable works is a big part of her role. That would bring her into contact with poverty, and I think she would want to do whatever she could to help.
I don't think she would be formally a member of any campaigning organisations, but I suspect she might be sympathetic to the temperance movement. That would be her route to women's suffrage, as the two causes were connected in the 1890s. Where Mina might worry that women lacked the education to use their vote wisely, Lucy would feel that in a good marriage, a husband would help his wife to make the right choices.
Abraham Van Helsing One sec, just need to give myself a crash course in Dutch politics of the 1890s.
OK I'm back. Dutch society at this time was divided based mostly on religion: Protestant, Catholic and a secular socialist grouping. This was called 'Verzuiling' ("pillarisation") and it meant that each of the sections of society were effectively segregated: separate schools, separate institutions, separate newspapers and little intermarriage between the "pillars".
By rights that puts Van Helsing into the Catholic pillar, but I can't see it - this is a man whose close friend is an English Protestant who's half his age. The group most likely to oppose the notion of Verzuiling were the Liberals, sometimes treated as a pillar of their own. And I think that's where Van Helsing would most naturally fit.
People who learned about this bit of Dutch history more than five minutes ago should feel free to chime in.
Quincey Morris I know about as much about US politics in the 1890s as I do Dutch politics, but that's not going to stop me.
I instinctively feel that Quincey Morris has strong views on something relatively niche, like the adoption of the gold standard. So I'm pleased to learn that the adoption of the gold standard was in fact a live political debate in the US in the 1890s. Quincey is in favour. He supports hard money policies and - as a wealthy landowner - particularly worries about the rise of the People's Party back home.
Jack Seward The biggest wildcard of the lot. Other than Van Helsing, I think Jack is the character most likely to have read widely and to be open to unexpected ideas. But ultimately I think his attitude to politics is driven by his interest in and desire for technological progress, which would lead him towards the Liberal Party.
He would be horrified by Tory prime minister Lord Salisbury's repeated opposition to change (e.g. his 1879 statement that "Whatever happens will be for the worse, and therefore it is in our interest that as little should happen as possible"). If he lives long enough, he'll be delighted by Wilson's "white heat of technology" speech in the early 1960s.

🔅Tuesday morning - ISRAEL REALTIME - Connecting to Israel in Realtime
🔻Air attacks on Israeli civilians…
Hamas rockets at Sderot, Ibim, Nir Am, Netiv HaAssara, Gavim, Sapir College
Hezbollah rockets at Betzet, Shlomi
.. SINCE the UN Resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire there have been 3 rocket launches out of Gaza.
.. The IDF says it struck a Hamas rocket launching position used in a barrage earlier today on Ashdod. The launchers were located adjacent to a civilian shelter in central Gaza's Deir al-Balah.
▪️CEASEFIRE.. following the UN Sec Council resolution of ceasefire, Hamas's appetite increases against the background of international developments: it rejected the American proposal for the hostage deal. An American delegation is still in Qatar to continue talks.
▪️US RECOMMENDS MAGIC? US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken emphasized in his meeting with Defense Minister Yoav Galant that there are alternatives to a ground operation in Rafah - ones that will better ensure Israel's security and also protect Palestinian citizens, according to the US State Department.
(( While the US has been repeatedly stating this, we have yet to hear a SINGLE suggestion on how. In the meantime, the hostages ROT. ))
▪️MAJOR ATTACK ON IRANIAN SITES IN SYRIA.. attack in the Syrian-Iraqi border town of Albu Kamal. According to the reports, senior members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have been eliminated.
Targets: Ayash warehouses in the western area of Deir Ezzor, warehouses for storing Iranian weapons. The headquarters of the Iranian militias in the villa neighborhood in Deir Ezor. Several sites near the El Hari crossing on the Syria-Iraq border. The headquarters on Al-Taz Hagana street in Albu Kamal city includes a security office in the area of Badar Hospital, which is itself an Iranian base. The headquarters of the Iranian militias in the El Tamo neighborhood in the city of Al Mayadin, east of Deir Ezzor. The communications headquarters of the Iranian militias and the Alawite security headquarters on the University's President Street in the city of Deir ez-Zor.
Unknown if the attack was by Israel or the U.S. Syria blames Israel.
🔸SUMMARY - Israel internal politics is reaching a crescendo due to the “Movement for Quality Govt”’s High Court case, in the midst of the war, over draft law and charedi low participation in the IDF.
On one hand the IDF is manpower stressed due to the war, on the other hand the IDF has taken only minor steps to accommodate this population segment and the political class has not pressed or improved the issue over the past 15 years. Sometimes the opposite, demonizing the charedim and driving them away.
The possibility of the war coalition dissolving over this issue is growing, while the core coalition is attempting to build a recruitment law with incentives and disincentives that the charedim can accept, the attorney general will defend, the High Court will not overturn, the IDF can actually implement, and secular society won’t protest… and do so within a month. The good news is Israel is a place of miracles. The bad news is they need it.

Pyrocumulus created by @randomfandomsoup! (portrait drawing also done by soup)
•is a fire & air hybrid/multi ghoul •uses he/they pronouns •gets called Smokey or Smokey Babes by Secular •has narcolepsy and RBF. but not angry just sleepy and doesn’t know how to control their features Sec gets confused every time even though it has been close with pyro since he was summoned •after rituals Smokey and Sec lay down together in comfy clothes as pyro lays on top of Secular to ease their mind and help its knee aches. they are a big heap of purring mush when they finally fall asleep together.

Valentine's Day Bonus
Long text post + accompanying art.
Alternative ending to the umbrella comic.
The sky darkens with rain but the streets are bright. Today, shop fronts like the one behind you are the same everywhere — pink or red, in hearts or lungs, and light that glows warm through the glitter.
Even though you bought the sunflower umbrella just this morning, drawn to it by a feeling beyond explanation... You think about the heart patterned umbrella you found just now, waiting for you in the empty trash can. You look around you and experience something like déjà vu. What is it? What's with the hearts? What's different about today?
Kim is looking out into the rain from where you both stand beneath the shelter. No, he's looking at you now. Did you say something?
-> "You didn't happen to bring an umbrella, did you?"
"I don't know, did I?"
You see something like a twitch in the corner of his mouth. He didn't. He doesn't. He's walked in the rain with you so many times, in that thin, stylish jacket of his. He doesn't bring umbrellas, not in any weather. If he does, you wouldn't be bringing any.
"Give me a sec..."
"...Take your time."
You consider your choices.
-> Offer to share the umbrella covered in hearts.
"...No," you hear after a pause. Though you can hear the hesitation in his voice, it is a no that brokers no compromise.
That familiar, sinking feeling is back again. Something about today... What's today? Why today?
Encyclopedia [Trivial: Success] Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on the 14th of February each year. A Dolorian celebration of martyrdom in origin, the festival has long since evolved in the secular world into a celebration of love, romance and passion. Though many celebrate Valentine's Day platonically, your offer to share a heart patterned umbrella could be read by Kim and the public gaze as undisguisably romantic.
You pull the umbrella back to yourself and sink a little to the ground.
Authority [Medium: Success] He is still in uniform. Look at how he stands: spine straightened, feet apart, hands behind his back. This is Lieutenant Kim Kitsuragi. These are his defenses against the world.
Esprit de Corps [Challenging: Success] To walk down the streets of Jamrock sharing a heart patterned umbrella with you on Valentine's day would make him vulnerable. The world is safer for the Lieutenant than it would ever be for Kim, or for Kim and Harry. You're asking much more of him than you realise.
Empathy [Easy: Failure] Why would he walk with you? Why would he ever follow you into the rain? You should've given him another umbrella. He hates you now. Valentine's Day was never for you. It's never been for someone like you. It's a consumeristic holiday for the middle class.
[Damaged Morale -1]
True love isn't possible after all.
"Detective. Detective— Harry, can you hear me?"
Your heart patterned heartbreak umbrella, cold metal resting against your neck, pink nylon covering your face, is lifted from where it slumps. Kim is pulling at it. You keep it lifted to look at Kim.
"...Come on. I know you have other umbrellas," he says. You can't make out the tone of his voice but he seems almost frustrated.
Empathy [Medium: Success] No, he's embarrassed. He's embarrassed to admit that he'd known about your other umbrellas from the start. Don't point this out.
Suggestion [Medium: Success] Trust me on this one — choose the smallest umbrella.
-> "I have Froggy."
You close the heartbreak umbrella and retrieve the frog umbrella, opening it up to barely cover one of you. It's in the brightest, cheapest plastic green.
"One frog, two frogs... are they all 'Froggy'? No, don't answer that— Froggy's fine. Let's move." Out into the rain, under the tiniest, worst umbrella for sharing, he doesn't say.
You turn your gaze to the shifting colours of light on his orange jacket.
"Kim... do you still like green?"
Congratulations if you've reached the end! I've never written anything nice about Valentine's Day but this can be a little break from cynicism, okay? Happy Valentine's to you 🫰💕

Sacred Spaces and Cultural Grace: Navigating Japanese Shrine Etiquette
Location: Shirahama, Shimoda, Shizuoka, Japan Timestamp: 07:40 on January 3, 2024
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 3200 for 1/90 sec. at ƒ/8.0 Film simulation: Velvia/Vivid
Ancient documents dating over 2,400 years reference this shrine, suggesting an age surpassing 2,400 years. Like many Japanese temples and shrines, some structures are reconstructed due to earthquakes, fire, or periodic disassembly for inspection and improvement, ensuring both longevity and the preservation of traditional Japanese building techniques.
The worship hall seen in my photo was last rebuilt in 1860, and the sanctuary on the hill behind the worship hall and housing the deity was reconstructed in 1922.
Visitors during New Year's adhere to traditional steps followed at any time of the year. Regional customs may vary, but general worship practices and etiquettes apply to every shrine.
It is appropriate to dress in a way that is slightly conservative. Just avoid wearing revealing or tight-fitting clothes (such as tank tops, sweats, or workout clothes) out of respect for the cultural setting. Remember, these are sacred sites—not a shopping mall or an amusement park.
When you pass under the torii gate, which marks where the realm of Shinto kami (deity) begins and separates it from the secular world, prepare your mind and your heart, calm yourself, and appreciate everything around you, be it visible or not.
At the torii gate, show your respect by taking your hat off if you wear one and bowing once before passing through.
Be mindful to walk on the left side of the way, as the center of the approach is said to be the “place where the kami pass.”
At the water basin (temizuya or chozuya), purify yourself by scooping water to wash your free hand and then switch the ladle to wash your other hand. Pour some water in your empty hand and rinse out your mouth. Follow the actions of the Japanese around you and will be fine.
Proceed to the main hall for worship. The customary routine involves bowing twice, clapping twice, and bowing once. Make a monetary offering, often a 5-yen coin is used as it symbolizes luck.
Shinto shrines cater to common needs, managing centuries-old traditions and festivals. Japanese embrace diverse traditions without strict religious adherence, enjoying aesthetics like Christian weddings and festivities, and follow Buddhism for matters of the afterlife. These cultural adoptions allow appreciation without religious affiliation.
For those with a keen interest in Japanese approach to religious traditions, I have provided links to useful sources at my latest pix4japan blog post: https://www.pix4japan.com/blog/20240103-shirahama

Btw now that I've slightly calmed down from losing it about the insane genocidal arguments in that last post, let me take a sec to address this part of it:
"I've often seen it written on this site that there's no problem with Jewish people being atheists, that atheist Jews still count as Jews. If this is the case then the religious aspect is clearly not necessary for Jewish culture to exist."
Now I'm NOT going to get into how our culture actually DOES include religious practices as a fundamental component, holy shit, but if you don't know much about Judaism and don't see the faulty logic here, let me just point out that atheism isnt the same as being secular! There can be, and are, SO many religious Jews who are atheists! There are also many non-practicing Jews who believe in God!There are two different dimensions here! Please learn about orthopraxy vs orthodoxy if you want to say anything informed about religion 😭
#judaism#oof trying to make this kind and informational but I'm struggling with tone cause there's yet another freak online who wants to genocide me

You’d be surprised how many religions ask people to endanger themselves, how many y people died of dehydration on the way to Mecca? I think Jahova’s witnesses don’t allow blood transfusions. Currently in America, the Amish are allowed to ignore regulations and dump their dirty water into the ground even though it poisons the groundwater potentially harming others, megachurches make billions off their followers but pay zero taxes, the Catholic Church continues to cover up child sec abuse, a mentally ill girl was fucking killed by an exorcism and they made a movie retelling it but acting like she really was possessed.
These groups, like the Amish and the Catholics, hide behind the fact that governments can’t regulate them to shield themselves from scrutiny or regulation
I don’t believe a government should be allowed to ban a religion, but any practice that can harm people, even the religions own followers, should be curtailed, because the right to religious freedom doesn’t supersede the right to life or bodily autonomy.
Another example is religious pro life institutions that pretend to be abortion clinics in order to trick people looking for abortions so they can try to convert them, and that’s entirely legal to do,
We don’t allow child abuse even if it’s part of a sincerely held religious or cultural belief, as you said these religious groups don’t exist separate from secular societies, why should they be exempt from the same rules and regulations?
ok, great. that's a valid political position. You're against separating church and state.
now why is your praxis going after a minority so small it has no effect on anyone else, while they do something that they've done for 3000 years, in an environment where there are no risks over doing it with goyish approval because we already have a system that works for it, instead of going for, all that...

COMMENTARY:
Here's the thing about any Elon Musk investment opportunity is that it requires Trump's fiscal policies to work. Trump's fiscal policies are based on the white supremacist economics described in George Gilder's Wealth and Poverty, the so-called Supply Side economics of William F. Buckley's Sharon Statement, which is a marketing strategy for the Ivy League socialism of the John Birch Society Here's the thing: we are a cunt hair away from the Star Wars economics of 2001: A Space Odyssey and have been since 19 January 1981, If Carter had been re-elected, or Reagan have been able to fully implement his New Federalism, and kept his promise to Gorbachev, if you replace the Pan Am logo with SpaceX, that is where would have been at or before 2001, The cunt hair standing in the way of Starship America projected by Eisenhower's 1956 Presidential Platform and Starship Troopers of any lunar base is the economics, business model and politics of Elon Musk and all the anti-DEI CEOs who are doubling down on Trump with billion dollar bailouts, just like his daddy taught him Reagan's New Federalism was the final piece to the completion of Stage 2 of Eisenhower's process for the transformation of the Manhattan Project of the global Military Industrial Complex to the Aerospace Entrepreneurial Matrix of Eisenhower's Star Wars economics, we be using the Moon in our campaing to colonize Mars the way Britain was the launching pad for D-Day across the Channel. Stage 1 produced Apollo 11 and Nixon and Daniel Patrick Moynihan created the legislation that authorized the reconfiguration of the New Frontier and Great Society into the core of the social fusion engine of DEI economics, going back to the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is 4 Square with the universe like Jesus's version of the Shema: Heart, Soul, Mind, Strength and the City on the Hill in Revelation, The Edmund Burke social contract of the syndication is a DEI culture. The secular rule of law of Socrates is the ethical foundation, the Thomas Paine Rights of Man the foundation of the I, a Person democracy and the Benjamin Franklin's Pursuit of Happiness is the structure that unleashes entrepreneurial impulse of the Elan Vitale of the Self-Actualizing person's will to win in a Free Society Nixon and Daniel Patrick Moynihan launched Stage 2 with Affirmative Acition, a complex DEI performance technology that will provide the economic basis for Stage 3, the final paradigm shift from the dialectical wilderness of the Boomer Food Fight to the organic performance structures of Eisenhower's Starship Capitalism of 2001: A Space Odyssey, In 1981, we were a cunt hair away from launching the final paradigm shift but the reactionary nature of the Hollywood John Birch Society around Reagan stopped it cold, where we have been stalled for the last 43 years. And as I say we remain a cunt hair away from the Starship Capitalism of 2001: A Spce Odyssey by the economics, business model, social philosophy and MAGA Conservative politics of Elon Musk and the January 6 insurgency legacy of William F. Buckley, Elon Cusk's performance model was state of the art when women began to blay half court basketball, The anti-DEI MAGA Conservatives like Musk want to restore that social milieu,

Why are a lot of Black People Christian despite the Bible and Christianity being used to justify their enslavement and oppression? via /r/atheism
Why are a lot of Black People Christian despite the Bible and Christianity being used to justify their enslavement and oppression? Disclaimer: I'm not Black (though I am mixed-race, white, and Cambodian) and have never personally experienced racism. I am not one to speak or tell people what to do or how to think, especially regarding the movement for liberation and combating injustice. Those are their struggles, the least I could do is to educate myself, empathize, and advocate for those whose voices have been silenced. Whenever I watch videos about slavery during the Antebellum era and the Civil Rights movement, there's always at least one person who quotes a Bible verse or says "Praise the Lord" or "God will set us free." I am not the kind of person to talk down to people, especially black people but for me, when I see a contradiction/inconsistency, I have to call it out. The contradiction that I must call out is why do some African-American people still practice Christianity and base the struggle for their freedom and liberation on the Bible despite it being forced upon them by slave owners and being used to justify their enslavement. Sure, some will claim that "Actually, the slave owners weren't real Christians and were merely using the Bible to justify enslaving people." But theologically, the Bible is PRO-Slavery! There's no denying it. As much as I hate to say it, the Confederacy was more consistent theologically than the Union as the Bible tells you how to own slaves. Also, how can you have on one side Martin Luther King Jr who advocates for freedom and civil rights, and the KKK on the other side who wants to lynch black people?! Both read the same book and believe in the same God. And sure, I know there's a gazillion different secs and they split on social and political issues all the time but still. The contradictions are making my head hurt. Rather than trying to shift through all of the nonsense of the Bible to find one verse that's anti-slavery, I think it's best to close the book (not like Christians ever read the book in the first place). I'll give MLK credit, he was able to make his points clear through non-theological, secular talking points. And Malcolm X said, "Let's keep our religious beliefs in the closet, or else we'll be here all day." I do apologize if my tone comes off the wrong way, but for black atheists out there, how do you contend with some folks still using the Bible as a basis for freedom and civil rights despite it being used to justify your enslavement and oppression and that theologically the Bible is pro-slavery. I think Lil Nas X knew what was going on and just said "Screw it" and made his song Call Me By Your Name, embracing his "sinful" sexuality.
