You often criticize the representation of male characters in the series. I think there is another category of characters that are poorly represented in the series: Adults. In a way, "generational conflict" is one of the themes of the series, with the confrontation between an older generation and the younger generation, and adults and teenagers.

The problem is that the series treats this theme very poorly. Generally, well-made generational conflicts in fiction work in a "dialectical" mode: Adults (Thesis) + Young people/Children (Antithesis) = Synthesis (conclusion and overcoming of the conflict). Each side has its reasons and its wrongs…

But in SPOP, the adults are either very passive (Angella, Castaspella, Hordak,…) or ridiculed or ineffective (Seahawk, Micah, Entrapta,…) or just evil (Shadow Weaver, Horde Prime,… ). Which means that the conflict is very biased towards young people, who are more active and effective.

I know that the series targets young people, in a more activist and politically engaged generation (which I am not criticizing, quite the contrary), and I am not asking to have adults as perfect authority figures, but there had a way to be more subtle in this generational conflict and the representation of adults in the series.

oh yeah, i've noticed that too. a lot of the characters in this show are just walking archetypes but the adults were especially just useless. micah in particular stood out to me, because this is a man who thought he lost his entire family and somehow survived a deadly island in complete isolation. and yet„ he's just treated like a joke? he shows no signs of trauma and he's just the “silly kooky dad”. his only objective is to be a good dad to glimmer, there's no depth to him.

don't forget that micah was abused and taken advantage of by shadow weaver the same way adora was. there was a LOT of potential with his character, we could have seen him and adora bond over being so similar, we could have seen actual effects of shadow weaver's abuse towards micah (instead of micah just being like “ah you can't trust her!”), we could have seen micah and castaspella interacting more, we could have seen him getting enraged over how shadow weaver is now manipulating his daughter the same way.

it seems like the writers brought this character back because glimmer needed a parent. he serves no purpose to the plot, despite having so much lore and backstory. that's the worst of it. at least the princesses were just princesses, we don't really know a lot about their past. but to write a character who has gone through trauma after trauma in their past, and then just reducing them to a comic relief is just straight up disrespectful — to the character and to the audience.

I mean, I agree that the show set up the idea of generational trauma early on, but it tossed out that idea long before S5 screwed up, and it was never necessary for the story to function as intended.

I will say I agree that the issue with the adults (particularly the evil ones) is that they weren’t allowed to be nuanced or have good points. It did frustrate me with Shadow Weaver a lot especially when she was objectively correct. She told the Guild the truth about the Horde and they laughed her out of the halls, but N.D. frames it in S5 as “she was always extremely selfish and power hungry like she was post-Spell.” Same thing with her warning Adora about Catra and her being blocked from becoming She-Ra. First off, that contradicts her advice in S3 completely. Secondly, it doesn’t make sense even on its face because she is objectively correct that Catra is causing Adora severe emotional turmoil with her continued behavior after her so-called “redemption.” Both the show and N.D. frame it as her lying and being selfish when it is objectively correct that Adora was able to transform into She-Ra until some unknown trigger from Catra blocked her. So yeah, not a fan of that.

I also think Micah could have been a mentor to Glimmer, but I would have fixed that issue by Shadow Weaver doing it instead. It’d set up her redemption arc better and also give Micah a reason to trust her again, leading to a more nuanced arc between the three of them. But in general I don’t think every adult has to be a mentor for the next generation, no.

Our agreement ends there. I can’t help but laugh at anyone who seriously thinks Hordak, Horde Prime, Seahawk, or Entrapta should be “adult role models for teenagers.” Especially since the rest of the cast is late teens/early adults. It’s not like you have some itty-bitty kid who NEEDS a parental figure. You can argue that for Frosta but she’s handling herself fine as a regent and the show never implies she’s suffering without a mentor figure. You can say it should have, sure, but the fact is as it stands it doesn’t.

An unpopular opinion: I don't care enough about Catdora to whine or complain about the show normalizing abuse or whatever. "Oh Catra is abusive she's evil she's terrible" man I really don't care. It was also obvious the endgame was Catdora and it's the nature of the show and its themes of redemption, forgiveness, and friendship and whatnot

my favorite movie of all time is Dead Poet's Society, and I don't think I could choose a favorite show of all time because shows are my absolute favorite, but my top are She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Avatar: The Last Airbender, 911: Lone Star, Station 19, Glee, Supernatural, and Shadowhunters!

How do you think each of the characters would relate to their queer identity?

this is such an interesting question because it's hard to know if queerphobia even exists in that universe, because it's so normalized there and most of the characters are queer, so for them, queerness has never been the "other", but i think that if they were to be exposed to this world and learn about queerphobia here, i think it would be most shocking to Netossa and Spinnerella because they're married so to realize that their marriage wouldn't be condoned here would be very shocking.

I think Adora would be very proud because she's never had "parents". Her entire life has been constructed around the concept of found family, so queerness in that context here would be nothing new to her and would give her an opportunity to connect with her friends even more! I think Catra would be proud, but secretly insecure, but also defiant, because she hides her insecurity behind so many layers of deflection it's hard to tell how she truly feels sometimes.

and Scorpia would definitely be the mom-friend. She would find out that queerness was "bad" here, and immediately start adopting queer kids off the streets and giving them a place to stay because her whole thing is that she is a good friend, and she would wear one of those shirts that's like "free hugs". scorpia would DOMINATE pride parades.

as for Double Trouble, they would 150% be the life of the party at any queer-themed parties. and they would be proud as hell. they know who they are without a shadow of a doubt and they would demolish anyone who tried to make them feel like shit about it lol. i think the only one who would be really insecure about it is kyle, because well.... he's kyle lol

those are the only canonly queer major/major-ish characters, but in terms of my (very correct /lh) headcanons, Bow and Glimmer would be the queerest "straight" couple ever. and since i'm convinced they're in a qpr, they would probably start demolishing relationship hierarchies like. immediately. and since all the good pirates are queer, seahawk would take a modern approach to his...... passion....... and burn every billionaire's yacht

What is each character's ideal setting?

Adora's is just like. Anywhere she could have a sleepover with her friends because she's just so soft lol

Catra's ideal setting is....... wherever Adora is because she's so wrapped around her finger

Glimmer's ideal setting is therapy because this girl needs to process her trauma (bonus if Catra is there too)

Bow's ideal setting is a peaceful meadow. Perfuma's too.

Mermista's ideal setting is sleeping because she's cool like that.

Scorpia's ideal setting is a pride parade giving free big hugs to kids whose parents don't accept them

Frosta's ideal setting is a lazer beam arcade because that girl has some huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge energy

Mara's ideal setting is the end scene in the finale because she would get to see that her bravery and sacrifice was worth it so maybe she could finally have some peace

And Entrapta's ideal setting is being in the lab with her friends
