Order fresh fish, and seafood directly from Fish Market
Tumblr media
A fish market is a retail center where fish and seafood are sold and traded. They can be found in coastal towns, near ports and harbors, and in large cities around the world. The atmosphere at a fish market can vary greatly, depending on the location and size of the market. Some markets are small, local operations that serve the needs of a small community, while others are sprawling, multi-level operations that serve the needs of a large city or region.
The fish market itself is often comprised of a series of stalls or vendors who sell fish and seafood, sometimes caught by their own boats. The stalls can be made from a variety of materials, ranging from simple wooden tables to elaborate, climate-controlled setups with refrigerated storage and displays. The vendors often display their wares on beds of ice or in tanks, so that customers can see the freshness and quality of the product.
In addition to fish and seafood, many fish markets also sell other items related to the seafood industry, such as fishing gear, clothing, and tools. Some may also offer cooking or preparation services, such as cleaning and filleting fish, and may even have cafes or restaurants on-site where customers can enjoy seafood meals.
The culture of a fish market can vary greatly depending on the location. In some areas, the fish market is an informal gathering place where local fishermen gather to trade and sell their catch, while in others it is a highly-regulated business with strict rules and regulations in place. Regardless of the local culture, the fish market is a hub of activity, with vendors shouting to customers, bargaining over prices, and a steady stream of people coming and going.
Visiting a fish market can be an interesting and exciting experience, offering a glimpse into the world of fishing and seafood. Whether you're a seasoned seafood lover or just looking to try something new, a trip to the local fish market is sure to be a memorable experience.

Do we know of any plot holes/retcons?
There are some. like god ROTM is littered with plot holes. but instead of getting into that. how about i talk about some s1 sunken scrolls. Scroll 21 stands out to me as Weird
Tumblr media
"What is this? It looks like the proprietor of that shoe shop! Could there have been an ancient creature that consumed prawns as food?! A terrifying thought indeed..."
from this description we're supposed to take this as -the text here isnt inkling language and is just a gibberish stand in for a human language -inklings dont eat tempura or know what it is, and find it scary
in s1 times with how little we actually knew about splatoon's worldbuilding, people did take this at face value. then s2 gave us tempura food truck and other info about how normally seafood is consumed in the splatoon world. so either this was retconned, or it was always intended to be a joke but was too ahead of its time for an audience that knew nothing about the setting.
Here's another scroll i find odd...
Tumblr media
"Since time immemorial, a rare type of electric catfish known as the Zapfish has been prized by Inkling society as a source of energy. In fact, the entire city of Inkopolis is powered by a single 100-year-old Great Zapfish!"
That "entire city of inkopolis" part sounds...off. what do you mean a fish powers the entire city? They have solar energy and wind farms and power eggs though? There's another potential explanation...
Inkopolis Plaza in JP is called ハイカラシティ Haikara City. Unfortunately this same word is also used for referring to the entire city of inkopolis, which has led to translation issues. For example, In the first artbook in english, there are several instances where stages are described as being "near Inkopolis" when the location is clearly in Inkopolis, and what's actually being referred to is Inkopolis plaza. Here, it could be read that just Inkopolis Plaza, which is just a section of the giant city of Inkopolis, is powered by the Great Zapfish. Or, they really do mean the whole city, which makes sense since the Great Zapfish chills in other spots around the city.
Either way, there is some unreliable narration happening here. what percentage of Inkopolis's energy usage comes from zapfish power anyways...?

Please note that I am not a professional translator. If you come across any mistakes, feel free to let me know and I will make the necessary corrections.
Touma Inumaru:
Tumblr media
Touma Inumaru: Toraaaa
Touma Inumaru: Remember the other day when we talked about going for a drive soon now that the weather’s getting nicer? I found a day off next week 👍
Torao Mido: What’s this? Are you that eager to go on a drive with me?
Touma Inumaru: Oh, would it be better if it’s not so soon? 🤔 If that’s the case, I guess we can just do it another time
Torao Mido: Huh?
Touma Inumaru: Eh?
Torao Mido: Just say you want to go! You said "soon", so next week is perfect, isn't it!?
Touma Inumaru: So that day works for you!? Why can’t you just say you want to go like a normal person!
Torao Mido: If you want to go, I can join you.
Touma Inumaru: Geez, fine, fine! I really wanna go to the beach with you, Tora! 😆
Touma Inumaru:
Tumblr media
Torao Mido: The beach, huh. Not a bad idea
Torao Mido: I know a quiet, peaceful spot in Kamakura that doesn't get many visitors. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the view of the ocean.
Touma Inumaru: That's our Tora! 👍 I wonder if they sell Ramune somewhere near the beach… or maybe it's out of season already?
Torao Mido: Ramune? Like the candy?
Touma Inumaru: Not that kind; I mean the one Haru was drinking the other day!
Torao Mido: Ah, the one he said he received after helping out the neighborhood association with his grandma?
Touma Inumaru: Yup, that! Ever since I saw him drinking it, I’ve been craving it too 😆 Drinking it outdoors just makes it taste even better!
Torao Mido: Why do they have a marble ball inside them?
Touma Inumaru: Huh, good question…
Touma Inumaru: Why do they…? Maybe it's because the clinking sound makes it feel refreshing… or something...?
Torao Mido: Well, it did make a nice sound…
Touma Inumaru: Right? Sometimes they sell bottles without the marble, but it's just not as exciting 🤩
Torao Mido: Can you take the marble out?
Touma Inumaru: Nope, you can’t! When I was a kid, my friends and I tried so hard to get it out~~! Man, this brings back memories! 🤩✨
Torao Mido: I looked it up. Apparently, it's there to seal the bottle and keep the carbonation inside
Touma Inumaru: Is that so?!?! The marble actually has an important job, huh
Touma Inumaru: We’re definitely buying ones that have the marble ball! You’re coming shopping with me, Tora! 👍
Torao Mido: Got it. For food, let’s go to that restaurant you recommended before. That’s in Kamakura too, right?
Touma Inumaru: Sounds good, let’s go!! Their seafood rice bowls are insanely good 🤤
Torao Mido: Is it a ticket machine place?
Torao Mido: I should bring cash too. I’ve learned that many older places often don’t accept cashless payments
Touma Inumaru: Tora~~! You adapt way too fast LOL
Touma Inumaru: Nah, it’s the kind where you just place your order with the sweet old lady there. But you’re right; they only accepted cash 😳
Touma Inumaru: Man, you’ve really settled in, Tora!
Torao Mido: Well, there’s nothing I can’t do.
Touma Inumaru: But still, here you are talking about ticket machines and stuff, yet in "La’Stiara" you were looking all cool and glamorous holding that jewel… it's so unfair! 😆 ‼️
Torao Mido: "La’Stiara" has been close with my family ever since I was a kid, and we've been in their care. I doubt there's anyone better suited for this than me.
Touma Inumaru: Seriously!?
Touma Inumaru: So while I was desperately trying to get the marbles out of Ramune bottles and getting excited about pretty pebbles I found lying around, you were already holding actual jewels… 😳 ‼️
Torao Mido: It’s not like I wanted them. I was just supposed to have such things.
Torao Mido: But
Torao Mido: What kind of “pretty pebbles” are you talking about?
Touma Inumaru: Hmm, well, they don't compare to the jewels we held in our photoshoots, but sometimes you find these really clear and beautifully colored stones just lying around! 😳 ✨
Touma Inumaru: Or even ones that are super smooth and shiny! ✨
Torao Mido: Interesting…..
Touma Inumaru: Wanna go look for some next time!? We can invite Haru and Mina too!
Torao Mido: Think they'll come?
Touma Inumaru: Of course they will!! Stuff like this is fun no matter how old you get! 😆
Torao Mido: Is that so?
Torao Mido: Guess I’ll give it a try then
Touma Inumaru: Awesome! I’m happy I've got even more plans with you guys now 👍
Touma Inumaru: I mean, I never would've imagined this was even possible considering how we used to be!
Torao Mido: Touma, you get emotional about this kind of stuff a lot, huh?
Touma Inumaru: Yeah, but can you blame me?!! 😂 Tora starts liking the stuff we like, Haru eats sweets like they’re the tastiest thing ever right in front of us, and we go to the cool restaurants Mina finds together!
Touma Inumaru: What could possibly be better than this? 😂
Torao Mido: Yeah, maybe you’re right
Torao Mido: I think I get how you feel now, Touma
Torao Mido: I have a feeling the pretty pebbles we find together might be worth more than any jewels.
Touma Inumaru: Tora…
Touma Inumaru: I’m reaaallllyyy looking forward to our drive!!!
Touma Inumaru:
Tumblr media
Torao Mido: Yeah. I am too

I've never lived by the coast, but I bet if you do, you have to be constantly aware of crabs. Think about it: nothing is really stopping the ocean-bound crustaceans from crossing the road and heading towards your home. Only convention will prevent them from coming to snap up your vegetable garden. "It's never been like this before," you wail, as you watch the foundation of your house be denuded by a million snapping claws.
When I was a kid, I got to visit my city's Chinatown on a school trip. Keep in mind that the sum total of my pan-Asian cultural exposure up to this point was "sometimes cartoons look a little funny." I couldn't tell you what happened on the rest of the trip, but I can tell you this. There was a giant-ass snow crab sitting in a water tank, in the front window of a seafood shop.
His(?) glass prison was far too small. He was truly immense, about a meter wide in each direction, unable to do much of anything except for stare out the window at the passersby. Having been in either the ocean or some kind of nursery tank previously, I have to wonder what he thought of the whole thing.
I had fantasies of saving him, as you do when you're a kid and an injustice makes itself really blatant instead of even a little bit subtle. He was only like thirty bucks, and I figured I could put a leash on him, walk him into the bus, and head home. After that, it would be a matter of figuring out what crabs like to eat (lettuce?) and keeping him happy and healthy until he either passed away of natural causes or escaped. Again, I live very, very far from the ocean, so returning him was out of the question. Kids can commit (in their minds) very easily to almost twenty years of crab maintenance. They're famous for that kind of thing.
Ultimately, I left that crab behind. The tour was moving on, and I had to fulfill my obligations to education, rather than to rescue another living thing. It was probably a mistake. If you live near the coast, please give me a little bit of warning when the crabs turn on us. I figure they won't know to snip the fibre internet lines immediately, but hopefully I can turn their relentless, brutal pincers back from my soft human parts by telling them I sympathize with their plight.

trip updates part one: Tokyo
It was a mercifully smooth 12-hour flight from Minneapolis to Tokyo! The seat next to me was unoccupied, so I could stretch my legs out, sleep a bit, read, and watch my shows. I finished Black Friend by Ziwe, which I loved, and Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Read. I also watched the first five episodes of Succession, season one! I'm so into this show.
It was so easy to navigate Tokyo via the subway. I took the train from the airport to my hotel, dropped my stuff off, and had time to visit Senso-ji Temple that evening. Visiting a religious site is something I like to do as soon after landing as possible. Senso-ji in the evening, lit up, was beautiful. I wandered through the temple grounds to look at the pagodas and the stone Buddha statues, while listening to the clinking of people dropping their coin offerings into the metal collection area. I found a little ramen spot nearby, and the ramen was incredible and very comforting after 12+ hours of travel, going through customs, navigating around a new city, etc.
The next day, I found a cute little cafe right next to my hotel where I could start my day with my caffeine fix. I headed to Tsukiji Market, and I LOVE a market. Normally I hate crowds, but when there's food involved, that hatred goes away. :) I explored the food stalls and ate all the seafood my little heart desired - crab legs, eel, scallops, a sashimi bowl.
I went to Meiji-Jingu shrine, in the middle of Yoyogi Park, which is very forested. One of the coolest things about this location was seeing a wedding ceremony that was taking place, with the couple and family dressed in traditional Japanese clothing. It was a lovely area to explore, and after I inevitably got lost in the park and found my way again, I had sakura flavored soft serve ice cream as a treat.
The Hamarikyu Gardens were an unexpected stop for me, while I waited for my evening kabuki show to start, and I'm so glad I went. The flower field there was yellow as far as my eyes could see, and there were tons of hummingbirds around.
The kabuki show was a cool experience - I loved the music, and the body language of the actors!
Other highlights of the rest of my time in Tokyo:
Matcha lattes and pancakes at the cafe near my hotel
Seeing cherry blossoms at Ueno Park!!
The collection of art and artifacts at Tokyo National Museum
The food - ramen, katsu curry, pho!
Soaking in the large, hot public bath at my hotel, which I had to myself that night.
One thing I didn't expect:
The weather! Coming from one of the coldest places in the United States, where it gets to be -30 F, I didn't think that Japan in spring would challenge me. And yet, it did. I brought my mid-weight spring coat, which has been working fine for me at home. For some reason, I found Tokyo very windy, and the wind cut right through me. I was very uncomfortable walking around, and finally, I had to buy another coat at Uniqlo here, as well as a scarf. I got both for ~$40 USD so it didn't break the bank, at least. :)
I got to Kyoto yesterday morning and I have more to journal about that, but I will do so in a separate post. :)
It has been amazing to be on vacation. To not have to worry about work, or grocery shopping, or cooking, or getting my workout done before work starts, or anything. I love my job and it still feels AMAZING to not work.
Oh, also, I almost forgot to add - I got an email as soon as I landed in Tokyo, confirming that I have been accepted at the university I applied for, and will be starting my MSW in fall. It's been a lovely celebratory trip!

top 5 cinematic depictions of New Orleans?
and/or top 5 things for me to do when I have to be there for work so I might as well get work to pay for a little treat (it will be summer so I will be indoors)
Unfortunately most of my impressions of New Orleans in film and TV are tolerable at best. There are some that absolutely infuriate me (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is on a unique level of awful), but not really any that stand out as worthy of top 5.
So I'll do the other one. Also good to know when you'll be going, as that's very important. Summer is our slowest season in terms of tourism, because it's so nightmarishly hot and there's only so much you can do outside before having a heat stroke.
#5. Have a snoball
Tumblr media
They're cheap, sold in many locations throughout the metro, come in dozens of flavors and styles, and are an excellent treat for cooling off in the summer. They're noticeably different from US snowcones, and in my obviously biased opinion better.
#4. Sit in the lobbies of the Montleone and/or Roosevelt hotels
Tumblr media
Both centrally located downtown, they're lavishly appointed and good places to stop if you're walking around and need a break in the air conditioning. Both have noteworthy bars: the Carousel in the Montleone is a visual novelty, while the Sazerac in the Roosevelt is noted for inventing the cocktail of the same name. They're also close to a variety of other attractions, like the shops up and down the Rue Royale for the former and the Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception or the Orpheum Theater for the latter.
#3. Ride a streetcar
Tumblr media
The most popular lines for tourists are on Canal Street and on St. Charles Avenue, the latter pictured above which uses the historical dark green design as opposed to the modern red cars. They're loud and constantly rattling and frequently crowded, but a fun way to experience some of the city's most notable thoroughfares at a glance.
#2. Shop around for food
Tumblr media
...So good.
Ahem. Sorry, fried shrimp are basically my comfort food.
New Orleans is well known for its unique, diverse culinary tradition, and there's far more restaurants here than one person could ever eat at in a lifetime. That said however, there's also a bunch of tourist traps, most of which take the form of massive upcharges on dishes (ex. poboys) that are essentially street fare to locals and that we're used to eating at much lower prices. I can't give much in the way of specific recommendations without knowing your preferences or any dietary restrictions (although if you don't like or can't eat seafood, particularly shellfish, your options will be noticeably restricted), but I can say in general that you should do some research beforehand. Look into restaurants that you've heard about and check out their menus before you come. If you're looking for really good deals on food you'd be better off going out to one of the outlying parishes in the metro, but you probably won't have the time for that on a business trip.
#1. Tour the Vieux Carré
Tumblr media
This seems like a contradiction in terms of avoiding the heat, but there's better way to experience the essence of the Crescent City than to stroll through the Vieux Carré. Go at night, preferably with other people as it's both more fun and safer that way, and come in the Esplanade Avenue side which is both more picturesque and has easier parking opportunities in addition to being adjacent to the equally interesting Faubourg Marigny. Bourbon near Canal is clogged with drunk tourists at all hours, but other streets like Royale and Chartres have a lot to offer even if you're stepping casually into shops and restaurants. Tour the cathedral, have coffee and beignets at Café du Monde, stop to watch street musicians and performers (they expect to be tipped), go up onto the river levee for the iconic panoramic view of the Place d'Armes/Jackson Square, make bad decisions in any one of the numerous bars (don't get a hand grenade...it's a tourist trap and it tastes awful) that cater to a variety of tastes in debauchery, and ignore any ghost or cemetery tours because that's all overpriced nonsense and you'd be better off befriending some locals and listening to their drunken ramblings.
I speak from personal experience, naturally.

Day 6 Hoi An
A free day today to either wander around or take a tour. But first of all breakfast in the hotel which was the best so far. And Vietnamese coffee is really nice! It seems to have a caramel or nutty flavour, not sure exactly what but we all like it.
A walk to the old town from our hotel is approximately 20 mins so that’s what we did. There are certainly far fewer people/traffic but still enough to keep you on your toes as a pedestrian. Lots of horn beeping still.
Hoi An is pretty with the Thu Bon river running through it but it’s still pretty dirty and chaotic. The markets are in the middle of the old town and they’re definitely not like French food markets! Meat, seafood, vegetables all on the ground in containers without much sun protection.
Tumblr media
The weather at 9am was already high 20’s and humid. Walking near the river was good as a breeze helped to keep you cool.
We went to a free exhibition by a French photographer which was brilliant and beautiful. He has visited over many years remote tribes and documented their tribal costumes and culture. I’m not sure if his work is funded by government or not but he gives a lot of financial support to some of the remote villages for education etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By now we were hot and thirsty so stopped at a riverside cafe for a coke for me, Ian and Phil and a coffee for Katherine. Paul and Sharon were on their own shopping expedition so the plan was to catch up with them for lunch. Before that we walked to the Japanese bridge which dates back to the 16th century.
Tumblr media
We walked across another bridge to find some lunch and ended up in a place overlooking the river again to catch that breeze. Katherine and Ian decided to keep walking and found a different lunch spot.
By now we were getting weary so walked back to the hotel for a bit of A/C (aircon) before thinking about dinner ideas. Ian had a swim in the pool!
Dinner was back in town at a noodle house and was great! Lots of boats were now on the river with their lit up lanterns looking bright and festive. Lanterns are everywhere here!
An early night after lots of walking and dodging. 😂

3-DAY Sydney Food Trip on a Budget
by: Icie
Yes, it was possible to go to Sydney without spending a lot on food and still have a good time. The trick is to avoid the fancy looking restaurants which, frankly isn't really worth it, and go to questionable places to find the "unplated" food but is super delicious! Ugly delicious is a thing and we humans need to appreciate food more based on the flavour, texture, and cuisine style rather than the prestige that was given to it by tire companies.
Here's the rules:
Maximum of $40 for 2 people. Drinks are not included in the tally because we had service water.
Amount shown is rounded off.
Everything is in Australian Dollars.
We can only call it affordable if it's $25 - $30 per person (i.e. if you're only one person eating. Anything above it is breaking the budget if you're eating with someone.)
It's a per meal challenge. $40 for a whole day is impossible unless you're just eating junk food and where's the fun in that?
Let's begin:
I combed the internet for recommendations on good Sydney food and tallied the ones that the internet has deemed worthy of visiting and gorging yourself on and I visited them with my partner. Honestly, exploring Sydney's food scene was what made our trip worthwhile and made us fall in love with Sydney.
Brisbane can't compare! Sydney is far superior foodwise. (Granted, I haven't been to Melbourne but that's a different story for a different day.)
~~~~~
DAY 1: Laneway Dumplings and Momo ($32), Tomyum Ramen from Hell (Dinner $30pp. As a group, we broke the budget and failed this challenge.)
Both situated on Temperance Lane in Sydney, you have to go through the back alleys to find these rare and absolutely delicious food. You'll know you're there when you pass by the Latin bar, see the fairy lights and plastic greenery near the Rick and Morty mural. The momos and dumplings were great! You were given a choice to create your own sauce or get the shop's recommendation. We did both. We had the recommended momo sauce for the Himalayan dumplings and created our own for the mixed dumplings. We were so disappointed with what we created and we loved the momo sauce so much, we ordered another batch of momos and sauce just so we could pig out. We should've been satisfied with a share plate of 16 pieces of a $17 meal, but nooooo... this food, I like it! Another!
Tom Yum from Hell was a beast! My spice tolerance is pretty high (I can eat Samyang Buldak without crying) so we tried it and ordered our tom yum. The kind lady at the counter asked us our spice level and I went in guns blazing and said "give me your spiciest tom yum!"
"Are you sure about that?"
"Hell yeah!"
"uh... if you say so."
Bitch, I cried.
When they said their tom yum from hell was from hell, you better believe it. She warned me and I didn't trust her. I was in spicy hell! The flavour was amazing, be it seafood or meatballs, and the lemon juice gave it just the right acidity to raise the intensity of the swirling party flavours in my mouth. And the creamy eggs made everything come together in something that is a good representation of Sydney's Asian Noodle scene. Ok, next time I stop by Sydney, I'll try their medium spice and have a glass of milk beside me to alleviate the haemorrhoid inducing Scoville defying spice effect of their amazing tom yum.
Day 2: Marrickville Pork Roll (breakfast $22), Mamak Malaysian Roti and Satay (lunch $25), Mother Chu's Taiwanese Gourmet (Dinner $20)
There was an internet consensus for Marrickville Pork Roll. Is it the best banh mi in Sydney? Absofuckinglutely. The meat of their crispy pork was so tender it melts in your mouth and whatever sauce they put in their banh mis were so complementary that my partner cannot help but close his eyes and moan about how delicious these pork rolls are. We found out later that this was a franchise of the original shop in Marrickville, but if the franchise was already this good, then the OG must be insane right?
Mamak's roti was nice, flaky and buttery and worth every penny. So much so that people from all over line up outside with or without reservations just so they could have a taste of what this Malaysian restaurant has to offer. Outside, we were treated to a show of how their rotis were made. The gluten stretch of that thin dough was enough to make any baker worth their salt jealous. After seeing that display of craftsmanship, we just had to order the roti canai. We also had nasi lemak but it just can't quite compare to the absolute beast that is their roti canai.
Lastly, we have Mother Chu's Taiwanese Gourmet which is Taiwanese comfort food at its finest in the heart of Sydney's Chinatown. Oh my god. So this is what actual Taiwanese comfort food tastes like. It is distinct from your everyday Chinese food and dare I say it, tastier. Each dish in this restaurant makes me feel like it was made by a caring mom who made something nice and warm for you because you have a cold and then give you a kiss on the forehead to tell you that "you'll get better soon, trust mommy." The Taiwanese Style Savoury Mince Pork Congee feels like the cosiest thing you'll have on a cold Sydney evening. And the Traditional Taiwanese Worker's Noodle soup was so fresh. The ingredients were so cheap that it only costs $8 but it all came together harmoniously that you'll feel like you were in a food anime where you're transported into a body of a Taiwanese worker who is saving money, exhausted from a day's work, and just wants to have a nice comforting meal at the end of the day.
Day 3: Din Tai Fung (Breakfast ($33), Emperor's Garden Cakes and Bakery (Breakfast $5), Kowloon Cafe (lunch $39)
Back to Chinatown we went because we discovered that's where all of the cheap but delicious food places were.
I don't get it. I wish I understood the reason why Din Tai Fung is so popular. I think the quality lies within the skin of their xiao long bao. They do not get soggy or the broth doesn't seep out no matter how long they stay in the steamer, but without the chili sauce, it's just not worth it. The beef noodle soup is also kinda meh. Is Din Tai Fung one of those restaurants that were hyped just cause somebody some time ago said it was good? You wait for so long and it just comes out disappointing especially if you're an Asian who is used to having tastier dumplings for 50c a piece if you just crossed the street from where you lived. There must be a reason why their HK branch got a Michelin Star right? Or is that overrated too? Please, somebody explain to me why people line up for Din Tai Fung.
Disappointed, we went to another spot in Chinatown. We lined up for another institution: Emperor's Garden Cakes and Bakery for the famous Emperor's cream puff. Wow! Finally some god food! For this one, we understand why people were willing to line up while it's 12°C outside just to have a bit of the hot, tasty and mouth watering cream puffs (which is actually manju) that is dirt cheap. it's $5 for 10 pieces and wow! It was love and decades of hard work in manju form.
Last on our food trip agenda was Kowloon Cafe. It was more expensive than the others but the servings were good for two people. Bruh it was great! The meals told us why Hong Kong cuisine is a force to be reckoned with. Who knew that baked rice with black bean sauce worked well with melted cheese? Hong Kong people, that's who. They also had a sense of humour when they called their French Toast "Thick Ass". The scrambled eggs with prawns was also so creamy and shaped like a tornado on top of creamy rice. I checked the reviews and it was rated 3.7/5. I understand why it was rated so low, it was an authentic experience of Asian street restaurant culture where the food is good but the staff is rude. They passed by and dumped the bowl in front of you unceremoniously and you were expected to eat fast and get out. Delicious! Reminded me of home!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, the Sydney cheap food scene is worth trying out. We were surprised with how delicious everything was even if everything we tried was Asian cuisine. Mind you though, we went to the places that were recommended by a lot of people and they all just coincidentally happened to be Asian food. On our next trip there, we will be eating Western dishes and hope it's just as good as just as cheap.
There you go, here are some of Sydney's good food, how much they cost and a little preview on how they taste and what to expect. I bet there are better ways to go on a Sydney food trip on a budget, feel free to comment and let us know about your Sydney recommendations!
Rating food of the countries I've been to, from West to East:
Disclaimer: it's veeery subjective
***
Spain🇪🇸 : 7/10. It's okay. I expected their fish and seafood to be better, tho. A LOT of relatively cheap fresh juices, 10/10 for health. They also make surprisingly amazing pasta and surprisingly average paella.
France🇫🇷: 9/10. Never visited cafes or restaurants there, but Carrefour has an incredible variety of good meat. I love their pineapple pie, too. There are a lot of products for vegetarians, Muslims, and, in general, different people who have different eating styles. There's a lot to see. And omg, their bazaar days are something worth attending: I still regret that I never tried clams with white wine.
UK🇬🇧 : 6/10. Not impressed. Something tells me that they deliberately make fish-n-chips that terrible. But I absolutely loved the strawberries under hot chocolate, which was sold by two cheerful Polish girls near Madam Tussaud museum.
Switzerland 🇨🇭: 6/10. Migros has nice buns with spinach and those Japanese "sandwiches", overall, your whole salary is gonna be spent on food. (Lithuania core lol😭) McDonald's there SUCKS.
Norway🇳🇴: 4/10. I expected a lot for some reason. Prices gonna cause you a heart attack, the quality is gonna give you a second heart attack. Also!!! THERE WAS NO FISH IN THE SHOPS EXCEPT THE CANNED!!! I was deeply injured. Norwegian salmon is super popular in Ukraine, how can they not have any normal fish in the big supermarkets...
Germany🇩🇪: 1/10. I may be just unlucky, but every time I visit Germany and pick a random cafe with lots of people(!), it has the worst food I've ever tasted in my life. It's like that scene from Desperate Housewives: "Really? A woman who orders Chinese food for Christmas dinner cooked a pineapple pie?" I understand now why Ukrainian women often marry Germans. My heart bleeds when I see what exactly you eat. I want to cover you with a blanket and cook you a normal soup.
Czech Republic 🇨🇿: 7/10. The soup was nice, ставлю вподобайку👍
Poland🇵🇱 : 8/10. Soup in bread, my beloved. Doughnuts were some kind of overcooked in oil, tho.
Montenegro🇲🇪: 10/10. I love you. I love your salads, your seafood, and I LOVE YOUR LEMON ICECREAM!!!!!
Slovakia🇸🇰: 7/10. I don't really remember what I ate, I am sorry. But I was really impressed with your supermarkets for some reason. Gotta visit it again.
Hungary🇭🇺: 6/10. It was my first time I've ever tried street food, and I liked it. You guys know how to cook meat.
Greece🇬🇷: 7/10. One day, I'll find the guy who can cook Karavidopsiha and beg them to cook it once again. Nice fish!!! I remember your arbutus honey as old women remember their best lovers. But. One time, a man served my family with unpeeled shrimps in batter. :/ What the hell was that? Is that some kind of a national dish I'm not aware of? Minus three points for such bullying.
Cyprus 🇨🇾: 7/10. I shouldn't be obsessed with your carob tree pastille that much.
Lithuania🇱🇹: 10/10. I love you. Although, I'd love to spend less money on food too. I love your Maxima and Rimi and Iki. I love your cafes. I love your bakery, I love your cocktails, I looooooove your soups, and I love your Asian food too. It's very easy to become an alcoholic with such delicious wines and tinctures.
Latvia🇱🇻: 11/10. Oh my god. Oh my god. I'm on my knees. Your cream chanterelle soup and Lidl croissants and marinated onion and šašlyk and fish and dairy products🛐🛐🛐. You guys know how to serve. I've never seen such pretty food designs anywhere. And of course, Lido. It brings me in tears of joy and makes me remember Puzata Hata. No, for real, is there any dish you don't know how to cook?
Finland🇫🇮: 7/10. That's okay. Nice street food.
Belarus ⚪️🔴⚪️: 9/10. Oh my dear Belarus, you're gonna be the best chef in Europe once you're free from russia. I wish I ate more machanka and drank your pine tincture when I had the chance. I love your chicory, it's a bit greyish, but it's much more delicious than an average chicory. Delicious meat in the shops. Other food is soviet-like, which makes me nauseous.
Ukraine 🇺🇦: ♾️/10. Вітчизно моя! Ти як здоров'я, наскільки ти цінна, тільки той знає, хто тебе втратив. I don't know if my favourite shops still work. I loved every single cafe I've been to, yes, even that shitty prorussian Mafia and Eurasia. I loved Puzata Hata. I loved Khlibna Kava, and its amazing cherry cupcakes. I loved Moloko Vid Fermera. I loved little kiosks with fresh Makadamia nuts and huge variety of vegetables and fruits. I loved Flagman and Silpo, Lvivśki croissants, and chocolate shops. I loved my seafood store. I loved giant frappes in Shevchenko Park. I loved my Continent with its old classical French background songs. I love my Japanese food stores. There are so many places I love. I used to find my bazaar so ugly and dirty, but I would give everything to buy the sea buckthorn jam from the cheerful old lady. But it's not gonna happen. My bazaar was shelled by russians to the ground.
Turkey🇹🇷: 9/10. Your Katmer, seafood soup and baked shrimps(?) are something 🛐.
Jordan🇯🇴: 7/10. Nice! You cook paella better than Spain, be proud of yourself. Although, I'd love to not be scared for my life as a woman all the time. Your bazaar seemed very interesting, but unfortunately, I don't speak Arabic. And I am a woman, which also sucks, I guess. I was totally covered in black, except for the face and hair, and people still stared at me like on a zoo exponate. McDonald's kinda sucks too, but not as much as in Switzerland.
Egypt🇪🇬: 7/10. It's okay. I've tasted only hotel food.
Sakartvelo🇬🇪 : 10/10. Our guide forgot about our existence, and we had to find any source of food to not die from hunger, so we went to your local bazaar and asked to fry some cheap fish. It had lots of bones, and I hate fish with bones, but I ate it all, and it tasted amazing.
Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦: 6/10. Most of the week, I just cooked some simple spiceless products like pasta and eggs from the small store. You are far from the level of grocery stores in Turkey. Although, your cold orange juice bottle saved my life from dying in the middle of the desert.
Qazaqstan 🇰🇿: 7/10. I don't really remember your supermarkets, I guess they were okay. But your bazaars are definitely something worth attending. Millions of varieties of honey with millions of tastes and very salty hard cheese Kurt.
Catching Crabs (And Feelings)
Tumblr media
Word Count: 2750
Romance, Fluff, Getting Together
Summary: Ochako and Katsuki go hunting for crabs on the beach the first night of their class' summer vacation. Turns out that they've already caught something else...
“Wow!” Ochako breathed in wonder as she pushed herself onto her tiptoes and leaned over the white metal railing of the balcony, brown eyes gleaming as she gazed at the beach in the near distance. The full moon and the bright stars reflected on the indigo waves, making it seem like diamonds flickered in the depths; the frothing seafoam glowed in the soft white light, as did the dunes of pure white sand making up the slithering shoreline. The crashing of the water rang in Ochako’s ear, even several stories up on the condominium balcony. She closed her eyes and cupped her hands around her ears, savoring the gentle to and fro of the tide.
Class 3-A had decided to pool their funds (and milk their parents’ pockets a little) to scrounge up enough money to rent a beachside condominium for a week of their summer vacation. Of course, considering their hero-in-training status, several of the U.A. teachers had to chaperone, but they were giving the students their relative privacy and were staying in the flat next door. They’d spent most of the day driving in, shopping for beach essentials, and enjoying a meal at one of the local seafood restaurants. Many of them were buzzing to hit the beach, but the night had closed in before they’d had the chance.
Some of her classmates were debating going down to the pool as a substitute, but Ochako craved the squish of the toes in her sand and the deafening crash of the waves. She flitted back inside, leaving the glass sliding door open to allow the salt-kissed breeze to flow into the condo’s living room. She carefully picked her way across the collection of pallets and air mattresses strewn around the furniture (after all, they had to do their best to fit twenty-one students in a condo made for ten) to the collection of beach toys, inflatables, towels, and other odds and ends crammed in the entranceway.
“Hey, does anyone wanna go hunt crabs with me?” she declared while plucking up a bucket and a shovel. She spun on her feet, beaming excitedly and holding up the plastic tools. “It’ll be fun!”
“I dunno, Ochako, it’s kinda dark!” Tooru fretted from where she sat cross-legged on her air mattress, squirming. “I think I’ll just go to the pool… I want to show off my new swimsuit, anyway!” she gushed with a sidelong glance at Mashirao, who was leaning against the kitchen bar chatting happily with Koji and Rikido, who had all donned their swim trunks in preparation for hitting the pool.
Ochako puffed out her cheeks, annoyed that Tooru was abandoning her to flirt, and looked at the rest of the girls.
“Mina and I are prepping everyone’s beach bags for tomorrow!” Momo reported from the couch, where she and the pink-haired girl were folding up towels and putting them in cloth bags, along with sunscreen, plastic bags for their cellphones, snack bars, and other necessities.
“I’m going swimming too, ribbit,” Tsuyu croaked as she walked out from changing, sporting her cute frog-patterned two-piece.
“Denki and I are going across the street to the surf store to check out the tee-shirts,” Kyoka reported, lounging on a bar stool while sucking on a popsicle. “Sorry, Ochako,” she added when the girl’s face obviously revealed how crestfallen she was.
All of her friends were otherwise busy, and the boys were all getting fired up about a pool volleyball tournament, so it seemed she wouldn’t be hunting crabs tonight.
“Oh…” she murmured as her arms fell, the bucket swinging limply by her side. Each clack of the attached shovel against it made her heart clench sadly. “That’s okay!” she smiled, trying to cheer herself up. “We can always go another night. We’ll be here for a week, after all!” She knew that was true, but it didn’t really abate the disappointment much.
As she was miserably setting the bucket down, someone hit her on the top of the head with a plastic shovel.
“Oi, Cheeks,” Katsuki huffed when she looked up at him in shock. “What’s the deal, are none of us guys good enough for you? Didn’t bother to ask any of us.”
“O-oh!” she exclaimed, heat flushing into her face as embarrassment flooded through her body. “I-I’m sorry, you all seemed so pumped up about playing volleyball, so I thought all of you were going to the pool…” she explained meekly, straightening up and rubbing the back of her neck.
When she laughed nervously, Katsuki narrowed his eyes slightly. He then just nudged her with his bucket, pushing her towards the door.
“Come on. Let’s go, Cheeks,” he grunted, snatching up two flashlights and dumping them in his bucket while he continued to bump her down the hallway. Ochako could only sputter in confusion as he corralled her to the elevator. She clutched her bucket to her chest, staring down at the fancy tiled floor as her cheeks burned bright red. Her mind whirled in confusion, and she glanced at Katsuki out of her peripheral vision to see him standing there with his hands in his cargo shorts pockets and the bucket resting on his wrist, watching the numbers count down to the garage floor.
I’m so confused! I know that Katsuki would much rather be playing volleyball with all the guys, so… why is he so adamant to take me crab-hunting? she thought wildly. The pleasant ding of the elevator provided no answer.
She meekly followed him out, walking in silence across the condo’s parking garage and through the gates that led to the pool. A few young teens frolicked in the water, splashing each other and laughing as they played Marco Polo. Several college-aged students lounged in the hot tub, drinking from red plastic cups.
They marched across the concrete poolside to a set of wooden stairs that had a gate leading to the beach. Katsuki lifted the latch and allowed her to pass, then followed behind her. She felt her hair stand on edge as he loomed behind her, prompting her to scamper across the sand-strewn wooden boardwalk down into the sand.
“Here, Cheeks,” he said, joining her in the sand and handing her a flashlight.
She flipped it on, and the circle of white light puddled over the dunes, making the particles glow beautifully. Her flip-flops squeaked with each step as she sunk down into the thick sand, occasionally crunching on dried-up seaweed and discarded driftwood. She cast the beam of the flashlight around, and the light refracted on the crashing waves in the near distance.
As they came to the shoreline, the thick white sand gave way to water-saturated, grainy brown. Ochako could see tiny white crabs scuttling in the surf. Their little pinchers waved to and fro as they dodged the swirling white seafoam; a few of them didn’t scamper fast enough, and their wee round forms were swallowed up by the frothing water and carried back into the sea. Occasionally, they’d come trundling back, disgruntledly snapping their claws as water dripped from their carapaces.
Ochako skipped up to the edge of the water with a delighted squeal, sending a few of the crabs skittering away.
“Look, Katsuki! They’re so cute!”
“You can hardly see the little bastards,” he sniffed in disdain, leaning down with squinting eyes to inspect the crabs zig-zagging around the wet sand and leaving itty-bitty tracks in their wake. “Why do you wanna catch ‘em?”
“Because it’s fun!” she answered, detaching her shovel from her bucket. She set the bucket down away from the surf so it wouldn’t be carried away before stalking along the shoreline, creeping up on the oblivious crabs. She snuck up on one plucking at some wet green seaweed; with a shout, she dove down with the shovel and scooped it up. She grabbed it by a little leg, holding it up triumphantly to Katsuki.
“My parents are of poor means, but every year we still made a trip to the beach. After the sun went down, we would all hunt crabs together!” she explained, ignoring the way the crab squirmed in her fingers and snapped irritatedly.
She smiled nostalgically as she walked up to her bucket and gently dropped the crab in. It circled the bottom, tapping at the plastic sides, before relaxing to sit quietly and snap its little claws.
“None of us get to see our parents often these days… I guess being at the beach made me realize how long it’s been since I’ve seen them, so I really wanted to go.”
There was a period of silence, during which Ochako realized what she said. She snapped her hand to her reddening cheek, looking at him in embarrassment.
“So-sorry! That was weird, wasn’t it?”
“No,” he huffed, tilting his head as he looked away at the rolling waves. “I figured it was something like that, which is why I dragged your ass out here,” he admitted in a small voice, walking up next to her to drop her bucket in the sand. Through the beams of the flashlights, she could just barely catch his face turning pink as she gaped at him in shock. “Wh-what’s that face for, Cheeks?” he snapped, grabbing her chin and squishing her chubby cheeks.
“Nuh-nuting!” she squeaked through his grip. “I’m jusht shuprished…”
He released her face with a small grunt. Ochako rubbed it, the nerves still tingling from where he’d teasingly grabbed her.
“That’s really nice of you… I know you’d rather be with the guys.”
“Bah,” he huffed and turned around, shining his flashlight around to see the crabs scrambling about. “If I’d gone, I’d’ve spent the whole night thinkin’ about how sad you looked…”
Ochako inhaled quietly, the bubbly feeling of gratitude and awe rising up in her body. He did it because he didn’t want me to be sad…
Smiling sweetly, she skipped up beside him.
“You’re really sweet, you know?”
“D-don’t call me that!” he cried, jerking away from her and hiding his face with a hand. Though his fingers covered most of his face, she could still see his bright red blush peeking out through the gaps. “Let’s just hunt these stupid crabs for a while and then go back, okay?” He stiffly dove down to scoop up some unsuspecting crabs, then cursed as he tried to pick it up and it pinched his finger. “Ow! You little fucker!” he said, dropping it into the sand and sucking angrily on his cut fingertip.
Ochako laughed, retrieving the crab and holding it up by its back leg.
“Like this,” she said. He glared at the wriggling crab, flipping it off while he continued to suck on his injured finger.
Ochako laughed and carried the crab to her bucket, where it acquainted itself with the current occupant. As she turned back, a cold breeze rolled across the beach, making her shiver. Now that she looked at it, the water was a murky black, and the crashing of the waves seemed to echo unnaturally around them.
“What, Cheeks?” Katsuki asked, squatting down and unsuccessfully grabbing at another crab. He scowled as it jumped away from its fingers and sought safety in the frothing water.
She walked up to him, looking around with scrunched eyebrows.
“Well, it’s just… It’s kinda spooky.”
“Wait, you gettin’ cold feet?” he sneered as he straightened up. He put the flashlight under his chin, casting strange shadows over his face. “Oooooooooo, I’m a ghost,” he warbled while wagging the fingers of his other hand.
Ochako snickered and pushed him in the shoulder.
“Don’t make fun of me! It’s a little creepy out here!” she complained, stomping her feet in the wet sand. She wrapped her arms around herself as the breeze blew, shuddering with cold and a little bit of apprehension.
“Jeez. You’re such a girl,” he smiled with a roll of his eyes. She squeaked as he abruptly grabbed her hand, holding it tight. “Creepy sea ghosts or whatever, I won’t let anything happen to you. I am gonna be number one someday,” he grinned haughtily.
Ochako was too busy turning to mush to comment on his overwhelming self-confidence.
He’s… he’s holding my hand… She certainly did feel safer. His hand was so warm and surprisingly comforting despite the hard calluses on his palms from his explosion Quirk. His skin was soft, probably from the nitroglycerin. A shy smile found its way onto her lips, making her sheepishly curl in on herself.
“Thanks…”
“All right. Now let’s hunt some crabs,” Katsuki smirked, his red eyes glinting with clear affection.
True to his word, he held her hand, which made it a little awkward when she stooped down to pluck up the crabs. Still, it was fun, too; she’d tugged on him playfully, making him stumble, and he’d respond by yanking her around randomly while they were trawling the wet sand for more critters. Soon the crab hunt was abandoned and they were just playing tug-of-war with each other, spinning around and kicking up sand. They stumbled into the surf, the water splashing around their calves. They stood there in the water, panting slightly with their cheeks shining in exertion, staring into each other’s eyes as the moon bathed them in its beautiful white glow.
“Thanks for coming out with me tonight, Katsuki. It means a lot,” she said after a minute. “You’re a good friend.”
He narrowed his eyes slightly, making her wonder if perhaps she’d said something odd. Then, he inhaled sharply, fear flashing in his eyes like he was about to tumble into the depths.
“Do you really think I came out here with you because I wanna be a good friend?” His voice was soft and deadly serious, a combination that made goosebumps sweep over her arms and legs. She stared at him in confusion, heart thumping in her chest, as he stepped a little closer to her. “You know how I said I would think about how sad you looked all night?” He was still holding her hand, so he brought it up to his face; he held it between them for a moment, internally debating, before gently turning her hand so he could press a kiss to the smooth skin of her palm. “I can’t stand the sad look on your face, Ochako, because I’m stupidly in love with you. Dufus,” he spoke gently against her skin.
She pressed her lips into a thin line as a thousand feelings welled up in her at once. Her mouth continually opened and closed as her face tried to process the rapid succession of emotions she was trying to process, and what the hell she was supposed to say to that.
“I can’t believe you just confessed to me and insulted me in the same sentence,” she managed finally, her tone flat.
Katsuki just snorted, his mouth still pressed to her hand.
“Is it really that much of a surprise?”
“No,” she laughed, his calm demeanor and snark allowing her to finally recover from the shock. She smiled warmly, eyes gleaming as he continued to peer at her over the tops of their linked hands. His red eyes glinted like rubies, making her marvel for the first time how beautiful they really were. “I have to admit, it’s surprisingly effective, too,” she said cheekily, biting down on the tip of her tongue as she raised her eyebrows suggestively at him.
“Oh? Look at you, trying to flirt,” he chuckled, finally pulling his lips away from her hand to smirk at her. “Cute.” He used his free hand to swipe a finger down the bridge of her nose, smirk widening. “As much as I would like to stare at your round chubby cheeks all night, it’s cold as hell out here.” Now that he mentioned it, the temperature had dropped considerably as the sea breeze began to roll in. “Whadaya say we set the crabs free and get goin’, huh?”
They tossed their collection of crabs into the waves, where they sunk to the sandy bottom and went about their crabby business. Hand-in-hand, they walked slowly back up towards the condominium, Katsuki swinging their arms in between them. Ochako had already been excited about their summer beach getaway, but now she was very curious as to what the rest of the week would hold. She knew one thing for sure—her new boyfriend was going to make sure that she would be as happy as she could be!
Anime Ocean City
So, yes my best bro and I went to Anime Ocean city for the first time last weekend. A convention that I had no idea is only 2 years old now.
The convention was only 2 days in comparison to the three day conventions we typically attend and since the badges were so affordable we did actually buy the VIP tickets (a luxury reserved for the rich at most cons I've been to). That allowed us to skip the normal line which was already wrapped around the hallway. We only had two people in front of us.
Anyway, overall it was a small convention. They only took up the 2nd floor of the convention center while the first floor had what I now know was some kind of wild-foul carving competition (carving and painting things like decoy ducks). There were only about 4 panels and they were all held in the auditorium. We went to the guest Q and As, the first one was with Catherine Sutherland and Steve Cardenas who were the third pink power ranger and second red ranger. It was interesting to hear about how they ended up auditioning and getting their parts, some stories about how things were on the set, etc. but for me personally I stopped watching Power Rangers halfway through season 2 so I only kinda knew Rocky (Red Ranger) and barely knew Cat so I didn't have many questions but Conner had seen season 3 as his last one so I think he was excited to see both of them.
The second Q+ A was with Wayne Grayson (known for characters like Michalangelo (TMNT...don't know which iteration) and Joey from Yuugioh among others) and Erica Shroeder (Luffy, the 2nd voice of Mai Valentine, Nurse Joy, various Pokemon etc.) It was interesting to hear their stories too overall.
I was kinda disappointed in the Dealer's room because they basically mixed the vendors and artist alley together and there was no clear distinction between the two. There also weren't any vendors selling DVDs or Blurays and no one selling English-language games with only a small amount of Japanese games. I don't mind having the option to get Japanese games of course but for our channel I'm always on the lookout for deals on games we could play on our channel (that and it infuriates me how hypocritical it is to overprice US Pokemon games but keep the Japanese ones affordable!)
There were plenty of places to buy manga but the recent rise in prices for manga has sadly turned me off of buying and tbh even reading manga. I love manga a lot but I feel like it might have to wait till I'm more fluent in Japanese and can comprehend Japanese volumes. Anyway, the local artists there were talented. It was good to see some love for athletic and curvy women from one of the artists there. There were plenty of Pokemon artists, I bought some Eeevlution pins to make up for the fact that all Pokemon plushies were overpriced and I just can't justify buying them because how dare you make me choose one!
Sunday was the day we shopped because there were no panels that day and the hours were short for both days so we honestly spent a lot of time out of the convention just enjoying ourselves nearby. We played some mini-golf at a place near our hotel and of course ate some delicious seafood on the shore.
That's about it, it was a modest convention but it was good overall. I do hope as they get more experience they'll get more events and improve some quality of life things like actually printing a schedule or having a printed out map, these are things that I guess I took for granted until going to a con that didn't have them. I'm happy OC has this now though since as far as I can tell they didn't have a dedicated Anime Convention in the area so I'm glad for that.
