I bought a print of this painting at the Scottish National Gallery. (Yeah, go on; it’s fine, you can say what you’re thinking…)

Entrance to the Cuiraing, Skye by Waller Hugh Paton
And I picked up a newfound appreciation for Lady Agnew as well. The painting was so striking in person.

Gertrude Vernon, Lady Agnew of Lochnaw by John Singer Sargent.

William Hogarth
Sarah Malcolm (died 1733)
Portrait of Sarah Malcolm, who was executed two days after Hogarth sketched her for murder.
Sarah Malcolm was executed in 1733 at the age of 25 for the murder of her mistress Lydia Duncomb and two fellow servants. Malcolm denied having any part in the killing but was found guilty and sentenced to hang. Hogarth sketched her in Newgate Prison in London two days before her execution on 7 March at Fleet Street. Hogarth then went on to make this painting and an engraving, that was popular due to her notoriety.

Conversation Piece at the Royal Lodge, Windsor
Artist: Sir James Gunn (Scottish, 1893-1964)
Date: c. 1950
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Portrait Gallery, United Kingdom
Description
The portrait shows King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II), and her sister Princess Margaret. Throughout the Second World War, the Royal Family remained in London, and when Buckingham Palace received a direct hit the queen said, ‘now we can look the East End in the face’. Determination to share in the fate of the nation increased the monarchy’s popularity. In this post-war portrait, the informality of the presentation, for which the Queen was responsible, was entirely new. The setting is Royal Lodge, where the family’s life was informal. They are shown together at tea-time, a recognisable and very British occasion. Gunn, who had been chosen by the King and Queen for the commission, recalled the difficulty of placing the corgi, moving it about on the canvas in a paper cut-out. Commissioned to hang in a public collection, the work’s domestic character demonstrates changes in perceptions of the monarchy.

The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania
Artist: Sir Joseph Noel Paton (Scottish, 1821 - 1901)
Date: 1849
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland
Description
Paton's painting is an imaginative interpretation of an incident in Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream. Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies, quarrel over the possession of a changeling (a human child, carried off to the fairy realm and replaced by a fairy child). The main figures are surrounded by a host of smaller fairy creatures, some grotesque, others beautiful, whose supernatural character excused their sensual appearance and behaviour. The painting was judged to be 'picture of the season' when exhibited in Edinburgh in 1850. Later it captivated Lewis Carroll (the author of Alice in Wonderland) who counted 165 fairies.

Many of her prints were based on the countless studies she made of her own pets, though few of these drawings survive today."
