Calling all art enthusiasts!!!
Did you know that since last week you can see sixteen of Stanisław Wyspiański’s portraits, some of them exhibited for the first time outside of Poland, in London’s National Portrait Gallery? Now you do! Amongst them are his most famous works, including this one of Irena Solska, which some of my older followers may recognize as my previous profile picture. Wyspiański is an essential figure in polish culture and his influence upon it is immense, therefore making this exhibition so wonderfully special. I honestly can’t put into words how important it is. The exhibition itself is bite sized- every piece is provided with additional context of the artist’s personal life and the person depicted. It makes it very easy to wholly appreciate the portraits without getting into the nitty gritty details of pl society of that time, which makes it accessible to pretty much everyone. It’s an incredible feat brought to life by years of preparations, more than four cultural institutions and lots of love for the art. So please check it out if you have the time!!!!!

Portrait of the German-British astronomer William Herschel (1738-1822), painted by Lemuel Francis Abbott in 1785. On 13 March 1781, Herschel observed Uranus through his telescope, establishing that the celestial body, previously thought to be a star, was in fact a planet. Besides his achievements in science, which also included the discovery of infrared radiation and the identification of moons of Uranus and Saturn, Herschel was a composer of considerable ability.

Conversation Piece at the Royal Lodge, Windsor
Artist: Sir James Gunn (Scottish, 1893-1964)
Date: c. 1950
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Portrait Gallery, United Kingdom
Description
The portrait shows King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II), and her sister Princess Margaret. Throughout the Second World War, the Royal Family remained in London, and when Buckingham Palace received a direct hit the queen said, ‘now we can look the East End in the face’. Determination to share in the fate of the nation increased the monarchy’s popularity. In this post-war portrait, the informality of the presentation, for which the Queen was responsible, was entirely new. The setting is Royal Lodge, where the family’s life was informal. They are shown together at tea-time, a recognisable and very British occasion. Gunn, who had been chosen by the King and Queen for the commission, recalled the difficulty of placing the corgi, moving it about on the canvas in a paper cut-out. Commissioned to hang in a public collection, the work’s domestic character demonstrates changes in perceptions of the monarchy.
