Scoops' Fics of 2024
It's that time of year again! The time for me to rank my own fics for the last year in order from my least favorite to most favorite. I only considered fics I wrote entirely myself, so you won't see an honest living in here because that was almost 50/50 written with Dizzy! (but you should definitely go check it out!)
This year I only had two novel length fics because I was supposed to be focusing on original work (oops). I had a heck of a summer with my bingo fills. There's definitely recency bias at play here, but that's just how it goes sometimes. Let me know if you agree/disagree :D
See the Elephant - T - this one was written for a fic fest that ended up getting canceled because of the grituation. I had already written the entire thing and it had to be T because the artists were going to post their work. If I had known it would be canceled, I would have had them doing the freaknasty. This was after I had already planned out and written a fic before new boundaries dropped in November (see Circling Back). Basically, this fic fest was never meant to be, I suppose. I was starting to think I was a curse. Oh, but the fic itself is a soulmate AU and kinda angsty and has a hospital scene. 0 horse mentions.
Merry Men Making Merry - T - This was written for Fairy Tales from the SMP - the first and only successful fanfiction event I've completed all the way through (it's never me dropping out btw, it's always the event getting canceled). Anyway I got my first choice of fairy tale, which was Robin Hood, and I put a fun spin on it. The art with this fic was gorgeous!! A very different type of fic for me and it stretched some writing muscles I didn't know I had. Secret identity and identity reveal, some of my favorite tropes. 4 horse mentions.
Move to Florida, buy the car you want - E - the first of my bingo fics. It turns out I am bad at being brief. Anyway, DNF get together and semi-roadhead and I dunno, it's cute. I wrote most of this fic free hand in my note book at my work desk because fuck capitalism. I just checked, the prompt was "late night care rides" which checks out. 0 horse mentions
Someone told me there's no such thing as bad thoughts (croptop) - E - this is the one from the middle of June about crop tops that was also written for bingo. I dunno. It's cute enough. 0 horse mentions.
Everyone understands why it’s mean to be (a/b/o phone call) - T - this one is funny because I didn't even bother saying what the prompt was in the author's notes, but I think it was a/b/o. This one was fun to write because it was basically a nod to the 2021 fandom and where we were, and where DNF were -- waiting on that damn visa. Like going back in time and writing a fic. 1 horse mention.
Can I Use You Up - E - I really had fun writing this one. It has fun Dreateam dynamics and then a really intense sex scene and the dichotomy of both of those things in one fic -- and short (for me), at that! impressive. 0 horse mentions.
Circling Back - E - this fic is fun and wild. I got to write co-workers to lovers that is also hidden/secret identity -- and it works! WILD! I re-read this one recently and it stands up. This was originally written for that first fic fest i was talking about and when they changed it for the new boundaries for art, I couldn't have any smut and the whole plot kind of hinged around the smut, so... I decided to just write it as it is. ALSO this is the first fic that Chelsey beta'd, I think. So that's fun! And it was the first fic of the year (not counting Hits Different which wrapped up in January). 0 horse mentions.
Just to do experiments on - E - Yall, if you had told me that I would write tentacle porn, I would have laughed at you. Extra has been trying to get me to write tentacles for YEARS and then it came up on my bingo card and I felt like I finally had to bite the bullet and do it. Except, I actually really love how it turned out? This bingo prompt was tentacles, obviously, but also cursed by a witch. A twofer, if you will. 0 horse mentions.
Let Me Familiarize You - E - here's some Scoops lore. I wrote this fic in two sitting and it is 13K, so that's wild!!! It took me two days in the time after my surgery but before I could go back to work to write this (in between writing the beginnings of Two Fools and another story that I haven't and won't publish lol). Anyway, it's about witch!George accidentally making Patches his familiar and then coming clean to Dream and also his mom is there. And then literally that same day, George dropped a video with his mom. Crazy pants. (or maybe it was the day before when this was all written? Can't remember. Also I was on pain pills). I really like how it turned out. It's a fun premise! 0 horse mentions.
Puzzle pieces in the dead of night - T - another bingo fic, the prompt was pirates. Anyway, I had a BLAST writing this one. Secret identity, kidnapping, munchy mc dynamics, I really like writing action adventurey fics and this one feel right into that category. A fun read, in my opinion. 0 horse mentions.
I’m Having His Baby (No, I’m Not) - E - a bingo fic, the prompt was "mpreg, but abortion" because the person who made the boards *ahem* doesn't like pregnancy stuff and wanted to punish me (lightheartedly lol). Anyway, joke is on her, because I made this into an epic story and I had so much fun writing it. Like, laughing out loud to myself while writing it, which is kinda sad, but is also the point of fanfiction. You have to entertain yourself first and foremost. And also I snuck eventual mpreg in there anyway so haha! for real, though, if you think the premise of this one is weird -- Dream and George accompany Sapnap on a roadtrip to Colorado to get his abortion -- you should try it out anyway. 1 horse mention, and arguably the one that brought it to our good anon's attention.
Anagnorisis - E - speaking of mpreg, LMAOOOOOO. My "I didn't know I was pregnant" AU with Angst and miscommunication and domesticity and last minute flights to London and a baby named after the lead singer of Glass Animals. This fic has a lot! I wrote a lot about the beginning of this fic on Tumblr and kind of how I begin writing fics. Here Anyway, pretty proud of this fic. I had to ask my mom a lot of questions about NICU. 3 horse mentions.
I Am Two Fools - E - every year the last novel length fic of the year seems to be in the top spot. No Exception this year. This fic was very tough to write, but very rewarding. I think it taught me a lot about making sure character motivations are fleshed out and make sense. It, and Anagnorisis, taught me about trusting the reader and dropping hints at things. Yall got So Good at catching hints and making molehills out of anthills, as intended. I took a chance and switched up POV halfway through, which is almost never do. And I think that really helped me stretch my writing muscles as well as all the bingo fics. Very proud of the work I did on this fic. 0 horse mentions.

Day 17 - Raspberries
✮⋆˙ TKTober Day 17 - Raspberries
✮⋆˙ Tags: Yelan/Yanfei (Established relationship), bullying your gf cutely, tummy, raspberries, fluff!
“I love your stomach window.”
“Hm?”
Yelan turns to Yanfei with a raised brow, the fabric of her tunic stretching as she does. The thin black fabric over her stomach creases and straightens, subtly shiny under the sun, and Yanfei sighs. “It’s so sexy when you stretch like that.”
“That’s the point.”
“I love your uniform. I love your job. I love you. Can you hire me?”
Yelan snorts, coming around the breakfast table. She plucks the half-drunken cup of black tea from Yanfei’s hands with ease. “Teyvat to Yanfei—are you awake yet? I told you to get some sleep last night.”
Archons, she knows. It’s not that Yanfei doesn’t want to sleep but rather that she literally can’t these days: after accepting a domestic case that appeared absurdly simple for the client’s proposed payment, she found herself unfolding Pandora’s box. Both sides of the divorce case wanted to claim ownership of an old property they’d inherited from the wife’s side but only after extensive research in the Qixing’s folders had they discovered the house was built on Adepti reserved non-residential land. Then, to add to the complexity, it was never officially claimed by said Adepti, so right now the entire case (and her paycheck!) is on hold until they can determine who it belongs to, if it legally can be claimed by any party.
A nightmare. An honest and true nightmare made worse by the fact that they can’t make any breakthroughs until the Qixing return with official word from the adepti (apparently Yanfei doesn’t count due to conflict of interest) so she was going to get some actual shut eye yesterday, only to get jump scared by her girlfriend sliding in from the bedroom window and occupying her all night instead.
Hey, wait a second.
“You’re the reason I didn’t get any!”
Yelan whistles. Yanfei groans, face falling between her arms on the table. She’s so tired.
“Please tell me the qixing has responded.”
“You’d be the first to know if they did.” Another groan. Her only solace is Yelan’s hand ruffling her hair, stroking the area she likes between her horns before drifting down to pat her back. “Hey, up. It’s breakfast time.”
“Not hungry.”
“Aw, poor baby.” Yelan’s voice is teasing, near. Her arms encircle Yanfei in a half-hug, tugging. “Come on, up. Eat.”
“Don’t wanna.”
“Yeah?”
“Mm.”
“You sure?”
Yanfei yelps as the hands around her waist pinch her without warning, eyes shooting open in alert as sleep leaves her at once. Yelan’s lips meet her ear, the sound of her kiss loud before she purrs. “Because if you don’t eat, you’ll starve. And if you starve, your sexy tummy I love is going to disappear.”
“Hehehey! Yelahahan, stop!”
“Don’t wanna,” Yelan mocks. Yanfei gasps, scrunching up her shoulders as Yelan traps her against the table, tapping along her sides. It’s overwhelming, the feeling of her hands on her scales, oversensitive and exposed under Yelan’s knowing fingers. Her knees jump and bang against it, causing the cutlery to jitter, when Yelan’s nails scratch her hips. “Careful, babe. Don’t want to spill the breakfast I worked so hard on.”
She squeaks as Yanfei’s hands spider up to her underarms before diving further low, sliding under her skirt and scratching her thighs. It’s terrible, maddening, made worse so by the memory of Yelan doing the exact same thing yesterday with very, very different intentions. Yanfei squirms, legs kicking in protest, but Yelan’s weight keeps her rooted to the chair. “AHAHALL YOU DID WHAHAS BUY YOUTIAO!”
“Mm, from your favorite vendor.”
“Leheheht gohoaha—wAH!”
She’d call her the worst if it wasn’t for the shriek she emits as Yanfei’s hands hook under her thighs and pulls her straight out of the seat; her head swings back only to be caught by a gentle hand before she hits the table. Yanfei pants, hair splayed around the countertop, eyes stuck on her ceiling (did she always have that crack there? Was that water damage?) before looking down to Yelan hovering above her hips. She shivers, scotting away, but Yelan’s hands rooted to her hips keeps her from absconding.
“Hehehe… come on,” Yanfei bargains, swallowing as Yelan’s nails tap on her stomach. “Let’s have the youtiao before it gets cold.”
“You can heat it back up again, can’t you?” Yelan coos, nuzzling her stomach. Her blue hair drags along the surface as she moves, spiraling the scales along Yanfei’s ribs and she giggles. “I just want to have a quick snack first.”
“S-snack? No, YelAHAHAHAHAN PLEAHAHAHASE!”
Her horns do bang against the table, the sound loud but no louder than the screech of her laughter as Yelan holds her down, lips vibrating as she blows raspberry after raspberry against her navel. Yanfei shouts, squirming, screaming, her legs kicking wildly in the air as incoherent pleas escape her with every shockwave running through her body, but the mischief glistening in Yelan’s eyes promises no quarter. It tickles so much, a vibration down to her core, and when she tries to beg for a break it dissipates into wild giggles until—
Clang!
Yanfei gasps, jolting, as Yelan’s body flanks her entirely. She’s flush between her body and the table, shivering with residual giggles, as Yelan’s shoulders blanket both sides of her head. A moment passes, then another, and it’s only when it’s clear that no intruder is in the house that Yelan relents with a sigh and pecks her cheek.
“You okay?”
“Yehehe,” she chuckles, leaning up and kissing Yelan on the lips. Her girlfriend smiles into it, the slant of her lips inviting, and she kisses her again. “What was that?”
Yelan snorts. “See for yourself.”
That’s never good. Yelan climbs off her with an outstretched hand before hauling Yanfei upwards against her chest. She points to a metal bowl on the floor, bag of youtiao fallen out of it, and teases. “You knocked that off with your squirming.”
Oops. Did she? Yanfei flushes, trying to picture herself laughing on the table, desperate to escape Yelan’s evil tickly mouth. Yeah, okay, she probably did it. Wait. “Hey! Who’s the reason for my squirming, hm?”
“Guilty as charged,” Yelan says. She bends down to deliver another kiss to Yanfei’s temple, then once more on her horn. Yanfei shifts, pleased, when Yelan pulls her up and delivers another on her lips. If this was the reward for catching guilty criminals, Yanfei would never retire. “Come on, I want breakfast. Someone kept me up all night and now I’m starving.”
Yanfei’s eyes narrow. “What happened to your snack?”
“Wasn’t enough,” Yelan says. “Unless it wants some more?”
She squeaks, ducking away to grab the metal bowl. “Nope! Get the soymilk, will you?”
Yelan’s chuckle echoes in the room, fond, as her hand graces Yanfei’s horns with a gentle tap. Pyro gathers along her fingers and it’s only a minute until the youtiao are crispy once more; she sets them on the table, rearranging the chairs, only to pause at the sound of a hum. She looks up, staring now, as Yelan traverses her kitchen with ease: she could arrange it with her eyes closed by now, familiar, the pop of her cabinets opening matched with the clatter of cups and cutlery, glass seasoning boxes and bamboo mats. Yelan’s hum is low, comfortable, and as she gets on her tip toes to reach the top shelf, her tunic flutters over her stomach.
Yanfei sighs.
“I love your stomach window.”
Yelan laughs. The soymilk spills slightly over the glass cup, and she cleans it with a smile. “I love yours too.”

Zoé tapped her fingers on the wheel as she watched the light. She blew out a breath and stretched so she was pressed against her seat.
She was now wishing she’d just stayed home, or better yet been on the subway. But Tim had insisted she take the car, because he wasn't using it today. Even though he knows that taking the subway is faster, and you're less likely to end up with this.
You know what, maybe they should have moved to California for her job, maybe she should have moved to Gotham full-time.
But no. No. They both agreed on New York, so he’d stop focusing on vigilante things better, and so she could take a break from filming for a bit.
Zoé pulled ahead when finally the people ahead of her started going. She let out a soft huff as she kept having to stop and go. Next time, she was not letting Tim talk her into using the car again. She’ll just go and get on the subway, like she usually did.
Half an hour later she was pulling into the parking complex. Which made her think of another thing! If they didn't have the car in the first place they wouldn't have the parking fee on their monthly bills.
She tried to tell Tim that they didn't need a car, but he wouldn't listen. It’s not her fault he grew up in a quicker-to-navigate city. Truly that was possibly a blessing, living in a densely populated area that could still be easily transported around.
Zoé rubbed her hands down her face and let out an exhausted breath.
She’s home; work’s good; Tim is making dinner; she could relax.
She grabbed her purse and locked the car up before heading to their apartment. Zoé glanced between the staircase and the elevator, she knew the obvious answer. She had already made the decision before even making here, but she was considering taking the stairs to maybe help wake her up a bit more.
She pursed her lips before rolling her eyes, having made up her mind. Soon enough she was in the elevator, slouching against the cool metal transport box.
She really hoped Tim wasn’t finished with dinner, meaning she could just lie down for a hot second before eating. She couldn’t even remember what they agreed on…or what Tim chose. Whatever it was, she knew it would be good.
The elevator dinged and Zoé brought herself up, grabbing her keys out of her purse. She as quickly as she could for as tired as she felt unlocked the door, being sure to lock it behind her.
The smell of pepper, eggs, and bacon was what first registered to her senses. Zoé couldn’t help herself, she closed her eyes inhaling the smell of food in their home with a pleased hum. She had slipped off her shoes before she even reopened her eyes, a rather large smile on her face as she hung up her purse and coat.
The blond was a little more than eager making her down the short hallway to the rest of their home, hanging her keys despite her fast steps. She had to stop abruptly at what greeted her over the countertops to the kitchen.
Her boyfriend in his favorite pair of Batman-themed pajama bottoms, her daffodil diagram crop top, and headphones that also acted to help hold his hair back from his face.
Zoé’s mouth had been slightly parted in confusion at the scene before her, but she slowly leaned against the wall as a small, soft, and extremely amused smile graced her lips. She held herself at her elbows and let her head rest against the wall, watching her boyfriend nod his head side to side to whatever music may be playing. She had no doubt he already knew she was there. He was simply enjoying himself in the kitchen.
Tim turned to her and gave a wide smile, “Dinner’s almost ready.”
Zoé pressed her lips together in a tight smile, one that made her eyes squint at him. She didn’t want to move, just watch this moment, this moment of her adorable boyfriend walking around the kitchen with a stolen shirt.
Wasn’t that her job? To steal his clothes? There’s rules weren’t there?
It only made sense for Tim to break even the silliest of rules.
“Welcome home,” the shirt thief said lovingly as he made his way to her, “Dinner’s done.”
“I see that,” Zoé spoke as she stopped leaning against the wall.
“Really? You look close to passing out,” he teased.
Zoé locked her fingers on the nape of his neck and leaned her head back, “Promise I’m not quite there Rob.”
“You sure Honey,” he leaned closer to her, and reached his hands around her to hold his wrists.
“I’m quite sure,” she insisted in an almost whisper. She leaned up, both of them smiling as they kissed, but Zoé had to pull away. A soft laugh came from her lips and she brought one her hands to cover her mouth.
“What,” Tim’s brows came down in confusion, and his mouth practically a pout.
“You’re scratchy,” Zoé giddily snickered behind her hand.
Tim frowned and reached for his face, rubbing the light stubble that had started making itself known. His voice was a little disheartened, “Guess I forgot the past few nights. I’ll shave tonight.”
“No,” Zoé grabbed his face. She grinned, “I like it.” Almost as though to prove it she kissed him again. With a bright smile she said, “You should grow it out a little. You’ve never had much facial hair.”
“I have,” Tim argued, but Zoé shook her head.
“Fake ones don’t count,” she stated firmly. She looked between his eyes and the stubble, she ran her thumb over it, “Just try it out.”
Tim sighed, “Because you asked.”
“Thank you,” she extended the second word before kissing the man again.

i just had a silly idea – y'know how there's those videos of big dogs being afraid of cats for some reason? i was thinking of that but with megumi's demon dogs and his s/o's cat who can see them but is comically mean to them to the point that his dogs are intimidated lmfao
Tumblr media
“what’s up with them?” your head perks up from the book you’re perched on the couch reading, megumi’s voice interrupting the woven words on paper and instead allowing you to focus on him.
his bedhead’s almost comical. you stifle a smile once he gestures to your cat on the floor, the usual spiked ends of his hair now fall flat as they bounced with the bop of his head. your eyes follow his motion. you tilt your head as you watch the small, furry ball hiss at megumi’s divine dogs.
her tail grows stiff as one of the shikigami approach her, head tilted low as their nose nudges her a bit. your eyes follow the red pattern against his white fur, moving back in a flash as your cat’s paw swiped at his nose.
megumi hums as he makes his way into the living. the scent of linen and tea tree shampoo wafting by as he crouched down next to his dogs, eyeing the feline suspiciously. “you guys are really scared of that little thing?” he mutters, rubbing behind the raven colored dog’s ear.
“i don’t blame them, she doesn’t even like me sometimes,” you chuckle, marking the page and closing the back with a satisfying thud. “she only likes you,” you sigh. you swear you can see megumi smile with the way his shoulders shake with an amused scoff.
the cat saunters back, waving her tail in the air as she walks back and forth — beady, amber colored eyes trained on the dogs. “such sass,” your boyfriend mutters, hand still petting the soft triangular pattern imprinted on the black dog’s forehead.
“as if you’re not sassy either.”
“shut up,” he huffs.
you snicker. you hoist yourself up off of the couch, crawling over to where your cat is while you try your best to not scare her too bad while you’re close. you scoop her up in your arms, laughing at the way her head is still fixated in front of her; the three animals having their own standoff.
she lets out a small sound under her breath as the dog tries to wriggle past the barrier megumi’s created with his arm, shifting it up and down to try and block his view of your sweet pet ( .. even if she wasn’t exactly so sweet, right now ).
“aren’t your dogs trained to attack curses? how’re they scared of a tiny cat?” you cooed at her, lifting her tiny body into a cradling hold while megumi pursed his lips at you.
“fire lies behind those eyes,” he mutters before you throw a glare at him.
you look back down at her. “she’s just a baby, let her live.”
“i’m sure it’s lived another eight lives and reigned its own terror in each of them.”
“megumi.”

Seungcheol burst through your front door, not even bothering to knock, looking slightly frazzled and out of breath. You were sitting on the living room floor with Areum, helping her color in a princess-themed coloring book, when he made his dramatic entrance.
"What's going on?" you asked, raising an eyebrow as Areum looked up, wide-eyed at her dad's sudden arrival.
"Daddy!" Areum exclaimed, abandoning her crayons and running over to hug him. He scooped her up with a brief smile but quickly turned his attention to you.
"I need your help," he said, his voice low and urgent.
You blinked, confused by his tone. "Help with what? Are you in trouble?"
"Yes," he replied immediately, setting Areum back down and stepping closer to you. "Big trouble. The boys are trying to set me up on a blind date, and I need an alibi."
"So, let me get this straight. Your *big trouble* is a blind date?" you stared at him for a moment, your lips twitching as you try not to laugh
"It's not funny," he protested, running a hand through his hair "Jeonghan and Joshua have been hounding me about it for weeks, and now they've gone and actually arranged something. They told the girl I was available. *Available!* Can you believe that?"
"Well..." you started, unable to keep the teasing tone out of your voice. "You *are* technically available, Seungcheol. You're single, remember?"
He narrowed his eyes at you, clearly unamused. "That's not the point. I don't want to go."
"Then just say no?" you suggested, shrugging
"They won’t take no for an answer! They’ll guilt-trip me into going somehow. You know how they are." He sighed, flopping onto your couch like a man defeated. "That's why I need you to help me. Pretend I’m busy. Say we’ve got plans. Something—anything—to get me out of this."
"And why would I do that?" confused, you ask him
"Because..." He paused, looking genuinely desperate now. "You’re my only hope."
Before you could respond, Areum piped up, her little voice curious. "Daddy, what's a 'blind date'?"
Seungcheol winced, glancing at you for help. You smirked, not about to let him off the hook that easily. "Oh, it's when someone goes out with a stranger to see if they like each other," you explained casually. "Your dad's friends think he needs a girlfriend."
Areum's eyes went wide. "A girlfriend? But Daddy doesn't need a girlfriend. He has Mommy!"
Both you and Seungcheol froze at her innocent declaration, and then your cheeks flushed. You quickly looked away, focusing on the coloring book in front of you.
Seungcheol, on the other hand, seemed to perk up at Areum’s words.
"See?" he said, pointing at her as if she'd just made his case. "Even Areum agrees. I don’t need a girlfriend." as if his five year old's daughter is the only thing making sense right now.
You rolled your eyes, fighting a smile.
"Fine," you relented. "What exactly do you want me to say to get you out of this?"
"Anything!" he said quickly, leaning forward. "Just tell them we’re doing something together this weekend. A family thing. They'll back off if they think I'm spending time with you and Areum."
"You're so dramatic," you muttered, shaking your head. "But okay, I'll help you. This time."
"Thank you. You’re a lifesaver." he grinned, looking ridiculously pleased with himself.
"Yeah, yeah," you said, waving him off. "But you owe me for this."
"Deal," he said without hesitation, standing up and pulling Areum into his arms. "You hear that, princess? Daddy’s off the hook, thanks to Mommy."
Areum giggled, wrapping her arms around his neck. "You're silly, Daddy."
Seungcheol laughed, pressing a kiss to her cheek. "Yeah, I am. But don’t tell uncle Jeonghan and uncle Joshua that, okay? It’s our little secret."
As he left your apartment, looking far more relaxed than when he’d arrived, you couldn’t help but shake your head at the whole situation. Seungcheol, despite all his bravado, could be such a dork sometimes.
Still, there was a small, unexpected warmth in your chest as you watched him leave. Even after everything, he always seemed to find his way back to you. No matter what excuse he needed to make it happen.
Later that evening, Seungcheol was sitting at home, blissfully unaware that his “alibi” plan was about to backfire. He had just finished putting Areum to bed when his phone buzzed on the coffee table. Picking it up, he saw Jeonghan’s name on the screen.
He answered with a suspicious, “Hello?”
“You sneaky little liar,” Jeonghan’s voice greeted him, half-amused and half-accusing. “You could’ve just said no, you know.”
Seungcheol’s stomach dropped. “What are you talking about?”
“*What am I talking about?* Oh, just the fact that we got a call from *her.*” Jeonghan’s emphasis on the word *her* was enough to make Seungcheol’s heart skip a beat.
“Her?” Seungcheol played dumb, even though he knew exactly who Jeonghan meant.
“Your lovely *ex-wife,*” Jeonghan said, clearly enjoying this. “She called to tell us you’re busy this weekend because you’re spending time with her and Areum. Ring any bells?”
Seungcheol groaned, rubbing his face. “She wasn’t supposed to actually call you! She was just supposed to tell me to tell you—”
“Well, she called anyway,” Jeonghan interrupted, snickering. “And let me just say, it was a very enlightening conversation. Joshua and I were on speakerphone with her, by the way.”
“Oh, great,” Seungcheol muttered, already dreading what was coming next
“She sounded so sweet, too,” Joshua chimed in, suddenly joining the call. “Told us you’d be having a family day. Said you were a great dad and how nice it was that you prioritized Areum.”
“I am a great dad,” Seungcheol defended, even though he knew where this was going
“And then,” Jeonghan continued, his voice dripping with mischief, “she thanked us for ‘understanding.’ Understanding *what,* Seungcheol? That you’re still hopelessly hung up on her?”
“I’m not hung up on her!” Seungcheol snapped, though his face was burning
“Oh, please,” Jeonghan said, laughing now. “You *ran* to her to avoid going on a blind date. If that doesn’t scream ‘still in love with my ex,’ I don’t know what does.”
“It’s not like that,” Seungcheol argued, even though he could hear how weak his own defense sounded
“Then what’s it like?” Joshua asked innocently, though his tone suggested he already knew the answer
Seungcheol sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Look, I didn’t want to go on the date, and it was the only way I could think of okay? That’s all it was.”
“Sure,” Jeonghan said, drawing the word out. “And the fact that you still wear your wedding ring sometimes doesn’t mean anything either, right?”
“I don’t—” Seungcheol started to protest, but Joshua cut him off.
“And the fact that you’re always making excuses to hang out with her and Areum? Totally not suspicious.”
“Or how about how you still call her whenever something important happens?” Jeonghan added. “Like that time you got promoted, and the *first* person you told wasn’t us, but *her.*”
“Okay, enough!” Seungcheol snapped, though he couldn’t deny any of it. He slumped back on the couch, glaring at the ceiling. “You two are insufferable.”
“Maybe,” Jeonghan said, clearly enjoying this. “But we’re not wrong, are we?”
There was a long pause, and for once, Seungcheol didn’t have a quick comeback. Instead, he muttered, “I’m hanging up now,” and ended the call before they could say anything else.
As he set his phone down, Seungcheol sighed heavily. He hated how well Jeonghan and Joshua knew him. Hated how they could see right through him, even when he tried to deny it.
But most of all, he hated that they were right. Because no matter how much he tried to pretend otherwise, he wasn’t over you.
Not even close.
Tumblr media
The next weekend, Seungcheol found himself being herded into a bar by Jeonghan, Joshua, and a few other friends. He hadn’t wanted to come, he’d rather be home with Areum or even by himself but Jeonghan had been persistent, and Seungcheol didn’t have the energy to argue.
“Come on, Cheol,” Jeonghan said, throwing an arm around his shoulders as they walked inside. “You’ve been way too uptight lately. A night out is exactly what you need.”
Seungcheol grunted in response, scanning the bar. It was packed with people, the music loud enough to make casual conversation impossible. He could already feel the headache forming.
“I’ll get us a table,” Joshua said, disappearing into the crowd
As they settled into a corner booth, Jeonghan smirked and gestured toward a group of women near the bar. “What about them? Think any of them would catch your eye, Cheol?”
Seungcheol shot him a glare. “Not interested.”
“Oh, come on,” Jeonghan teased. “You can’t stay hung up on—”
“I said I’m not interested,” Seungcheol interrupted, his tone sharper than he intended
Jeonghan raised his hands in mock surrender. “Alright, alright. No need to bite my head off.”
But Jeonghan being Jeonghan, he didn’t let it drop. When the women eventually came over, clearly encouraged by Jeonghan and Joshua, Seungcheol’s discomfort was palpable
“Hi,” one of the women said, flashing him a bright smile. “I’m Hyejin. And you are?”
“Not interested,” Seungcheol muttered, taking a sip of his drink without meeting her gaze.
Her smile faltered, but she didn’t give up. “Oh, come on. You’re way too handsome to be sitting here brooding all night.”
Joshua tried to suppress a laugh while Jeonghan nudged him under the table, grinning like the devil himself.
“I’m fine, thanks,” Seungcheol said, still avoiding eye contact.
“Don’t mind him,” Jeonghan said, ever the instigator. “He’s just shy.”
Seungcheol glared at Jeonghan. “I’m not shy.”
“Then talk to her,” Jeonghan challenged, a mischievous glint in his eye
“I don’t want to,” Seungcheol snapped, standing up abruptly. “I’m getting some air.”
As he walked away, Jeonghan burst into laughter. “I swear, he’s worse than a teenager with a crush.”
Outside, Seungcheol leaned against the cool brick wall, letting out a heavy sigh. He didn’t know why he’d let the guys drag him out in the first place. This wasn’t his scene anymore.
He pulled out his phone and instinctively opened your messages. There was a picture you’d sent earlier that day of Areum holding up a crayon drawing of the two of you with her in the middle. She’d written “My Famly” in bright, messy letters at the top.
He smiled to himself, his thumb hovering over the call button.
Before he could make a decision, the door to the bar opened, and Joshua stepped outside, a knowing look on his face. “Thought I’d find you out here.”
“Not in the mood,” Seungcheol muttered, putting his phone away.
Joshua leaned against the wall next to him, crossing his arms. “You know, Jeonghan’s just messing with you. He knows you’re still into her.”
“I’m not—”
“Cheol.” Joshua cut him off with a pointed look. “We’ve known you for years. Don’t even try to deny it.”
Seungcheol sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It doesn’t matter. We’re divorced. She’s moved on.”
“Has she?” Joshua asked, raising an eyebrow
That made Seungcheol pause. “What do you mean?”
“She’s not exactly going on dates, is she?” Joshua pointed out. “And last I checked, she’s still wearing your ring.”
Seungcheol frowned, his chest tightening at the thought. He’d noticed it, of course. How could he not? But he hadn’t dared to hope it meant anything.
“Look, man,” Joshua said, clapping him on the shoulder. “If you still love her and I know you do you’ve got to stop acting like it’s too late. Because if you keep sitting on the sidelines, someone else *will* come along eventually. And you won’t have anyone to blame but yourself.”
With that, Joshua turned and went back inside, leaving Seungcheol alone with his thoughts.
And for the first time in a long while, those thoughts were filled with hope.
Seungcheol sighed and adjusted his jacket as he made his way back inside. Maybe if he stayed near the bar’s edge, the persistent group would lose interest. But as soon as he returned to the booth, Hyejin, the overly determined woman, lit up like he was her jackpot.
“There you are,” she said, patting the empty seat beside her. “I thought you might’ve run off.”
Seungcheol stayed standing, crossing his arms. “Just needed air.”
“Well, now that you’re back, let’s make this night a little more fun, huh?” She reached for his arm, but he took a step back
“I’m good,” he said flatly
But Hyejin clearly wasn’t one to give up easily.
“Oh, come on. One drink. What’s the harm?”
Jeonghan and Joshua, meanwhile, were watching the scene unfold like it was the best drama of the year. Joshua even had the audacity to take a sip of his beer and mutter, “This is going to be good.”
Seungcheol shot them both a glare before turning back to Hyejin. He’d had enough of the games.
“Look,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “I’m flattered, really. But I’m not interested. I have someone else.”
Her smile faltered. “Oh? You’re married?”
He didn’t hesitate reaching for the gold chain tucked under his shirt, there hangs his wedding ring. The date and your initials engraved on the inside. He let it dangle in the dim light, the small circle gleaming like a quiet promise.
“Divorced,” he clarified, “but that doesn’t mean I’m available.”
Hyejin blinked, clearly not expecting that response. “You’re divorced, but you’re still...?”
“I’m still in love with my ex-wife,” Seungcheol said plainly, his voice steady. “And we have a daughter together. Her name is Areum. She’s five, loves soccer, and thinks I can fix anything—even when I can’t.”
Jeonghan and Joshua exchanged wide-eyed glances, the playful smirks slipping from their faces.
“Whoa,” Jeonghan muttered under his breath. “He went there.
Seungcheol ignored them, keeping his focus on Hyejin. “So, no offense, but I’m not looking for anything. My family is my priority. Always.”
There was a moment of stunned silence before Hyejin finally nodded, clearly caught off guard. “I see. Well... good for you, I guess. It’s rare to meet someone so dedicated.”
With that, she stood up, mumbling something about grabbing another drink, and walked away.
The second she was out of earshot, Jeonghan burst into laughter. “Oh, my God. Cheol, that was...”
“I’ve never seen someone so politely crush someone’s hopes like that.” Joshua shook his head, though he was smiling
“I’m not joking,” Seungcheol said, slipping the ring and chain back under his shirt
Jeonghan grinned, leaning across the table. “We know you’re not. That’s what makes it so entertaining. You’re still head over heels for her, aren’t you?”
Seungcheol sighed, sinking into the booth. “Can we not do this right now?”
“Nope,” Jeonghan said, popping the “p.” “This is exactly the time to do it. Because you just told a complete stranger that you’re still in love with your ex-wife. Out loud. In public.”
“And in front of witnesses,” Joshua added, smirking
Seungcheol groaned, covering his face with his hands. “Why do I even hang out with you two?”
“Because we’re the only ones who can call you out on your nonsense,” Jeonghan said, patting him on the back. “And honestly, Cheol, it’s about time you stopped hiding it.”
“Stopped hiding what?” Seungcheol muttered.
“That you want her back,” Joshua said simply.
Seungcheol didn’t respond, his thoughts too tangled with the truth of their words. He didn’t need to admit it—they already knew.
And deep down, so did he.
Tumblr media
The hum of the car engine fills the silence between you and Seungcheol. The road stretches endlessly, flanked by towering trees that seem to lean in, listening to the quiet tension between you. In the backseat, Areum is a bundle of energy, her stuffed rabbit tucked securely under one arm as she hums a made-up tune. Her legs swing back and forth, her excitement barely contained.
“Are we there yet?” she chirps for the third time in an hour
“Almost, sweetheart,” Seungcheol answers, glancing at her through the rearview mirror.
You glance at him from the passenger seat, noting how his hands grip the steering wheel, veins faintly visible under his tan skin. He looks good—too good. His hair, slightly longer than when you last saw him, falls over his forehead, and his jawline is as sharp as ever.
You force yourself to look away, instead focusing on the scenery outside, even though it does little to distract you from the weight of his presence.
“You excited, Areum?” you ask
“I’m soooo excited!” she exclaims, throwing her hands into the air. “Mommy, Daddy, we’re going to have so much fun! Just like old times!”
Your heart clenches at her words. You glance at Seungcheol again, catching the way his lips press into a thin line. He doesn’t say anything, but the moment hangs heavily between you.
The cabin is perfect. Nestled by a serene lake, it’s surrounded by tall pines that sway gently in the breeze. The wooden exterior glows warmly in the afternoon sunlight, and Areum bounces with excitement as soon as you step out of the car.
“Look, Mommy! A swing!” she squeals, racing toward the porch where a rustic wooden swing creaks invitingly.
Seungcheol opens the trunk and starts unloading the bags. You hesitate for a moment before grabbing Areum’s smaller suitcase and following him inside.
Areum darts around, exploring every nook and cranny, while you and Seungcheol silently divvy up tasks. You find yourself in the kitchen, unpacking snacks and prepping a quick lunch.
The clatter of utensils is the only sound until Seungcheol walks in, his sleeves rolled up, revealing forearms that shouldn’t still affect you the way they do.
“Need help?” he asks
“I’ve got it,” you reply curtly, not looking up
He doesn’t leave. Instead, he leans against the counter, watching you as you slice fruit. The tension is suffocating, and you’re about to tell him to either help or leave when Areum bursts in
“Daddy! Come help me unpack my toys!” she demands, grabbing his hand and tugging him toward the door
He follows her willingly, but not before casting one last look your way A look that lingers too long and says too much.
After dinner, Areum insists on roasting marshmallows by the firepit outside. The three of you gather under the clear night sky, the flames crackling and sending up occasional sparks. Areum’s laughter fills the air as she holds her marshmallow too close to the fire, causing it to catch alight.
“Help, Daddy!” she shrieks, holding the stick out.
Seungcheol chuckles, taking it from her and expertly blowing out the flames. “There. Perfectly charred,” he declares, handing it back to her.
You watch as he wipes a smudge of chocolate from her cheek, his expression soft and full of love. The sight twists something inside you, and you have to look away.
When your eyes meet his across the fire, his gaze is steady, searching, as if he’s trying to read your mind.
Tumblr media
Areum’s birthday breakfast is a chaotic mix of pancakes, whipped cream, and sprinkles. She insists on wearing her birthday crown all day, and Seungcheol dutifully bows every time she walks by, calling her “Princess Areum.”
When it’s time for cake, she claps her hands excitedly as you light the candles. “Okay, sweetie, make a wish,” you say, kneeling beside her.
She closes her eyes, her expression scrunching up in concentration. Then, with a triumphant shout, she declares, “I wish for a sibling!”
Your breath catches, and you glance at Seungcheol, who looks just as stunned. Areum blows out the candles in one go, her face lighting up with joy. “Now it has to come true!” she exclaims, completely oblivious to the tension between you and her father.
The morning sun glitters on the lake’s surface, and Areum races ahead, her bright pink swimsuit standing out against the greens and blues of nature. She shrieks with delight as her toes touch the cold water, kicking up little splashes.
“Come on, Mommy! Daddy!” she calls, waving her arms.
You hesitate at the shoreline, adjusting your cover-up nervously. Seungcheol, on the other hand, wades in without hesitation, his muscular frame cutting through the water as he lifts Areum into his arms. She giggles as he spins her around, droplets flying everywhere.
“Scared of a little water?” he teases, glancing back at you with a smirk.
You roll your eyes but step in, letting the icy water creep up your legs. Areum swims over to you, her small hands grasping yours.
“Let’s play! All of us!” she exclaims.
She drags you toward Seungcheol, who’s treading water a few feet away. The three of you end up playing a makeshift game of tag, and for a moment, it feels almost normal almost like the three of you are a family again.
Later, when Areum insists on building sandcastles by the shore, you sit side by side with Seungcheol, the silence between you no longer quite as heavy.
“She really loves this,” he says, watching Areum with a fond smile.
“She’s been looking forward to it for weeks,” you admit, fiddling with a piece of grass. “She wanted it to be perfect.”
He glances at you. “I think it is.”
After Areum falls asleep, the cabin feels too quiet. You find yourself on the porch, staring out at the dark lake. The sound of footsteps behind you makes you tense, but you don’t turn around. You know it’s him.
“She really surprised us today,” Seungcheol says, leaning against the railing beside you
“That’s Areum,” you reply softly, wrapping your arms around yourself. “Always full of surprises.”
There’s a pause before he speaks again. “She’s a lot like you.”
You glance at him, caught off guard. His gaze is steady, filled with something you can’t quite name. “You don’t have to say that,” you mumble
“I mean it,” he says, his voice low. “You’re both stubborn, and you never give up on what you want.”
The words hang between you, and before you can think, he takes a step closer. “I know I messed up,” he says, his tone almost pleading. “But being here… it reminds me of what we had. What we could still have.”
“Cheol…” you start, but he silences you with a gentle touch on your arm.
“I’m not asking for everything right now,” he says, his voice barely above a whisper. “But tell me… do you feel it too? Even a little?”
You don’t answer with words. Instead, you close the distance between you, your lips meeting his in a kiss that feels like both a question and an answer. It’s slow, deliberate, and filled with the weight of everything left unsaid.
For the first time in years, you let yourself hope.
The kiss deepens, but it isn’t hurried. It feels more like rediscovering something familiar yet distant. Seungcheol’s hand finds the curve of your waist, grounding you, while the other gently brushes your cheek.
For a fleeting moment, the years of heartbreak, resentment, and missed chances seem to melt away, leaving just the two of you under the starlit sky.
When you finally pull back, his forehead rests against yours, and his breath fans across your face. Neither of you says a word, and for once, the silence feels comfortable, even necessary.
“I… I should go to bed,” you whisper, your voice trembling slightly. It isn’t a rejection, but a plea for space, a moment to process what just happened.
Seungcheol nods, his hand lingering on your arm before he lets you go. “Goodnight,” he murmurs, his voice laced with something you can’t quite place—hope, maybe.
You retreat to your room, your heart pounding in your chest. You glance at the bed, where Areum sleeps peacefully, her little hand clutching her stuffed rabbit. Her soft breaths are a reminder of everything that matters, of why you came here in the first place.
Still, when you lie down, the memory of Seungcheol’s touch lingers, refusing to let you rest.
The next morning, it's smell of freshly brewed coffee wakes you. Padding into the kitchen, you find Seungcheol already at work, flipping pancakes while Areum sits on the counter, wearing one of his oversized shirts over her pajamas. She’s animatedly telling him a story about her dreams, waving her arms for emphasis.
“And then the dragon said, ‘Areum, you’re the bravest princess ever!’” she declares, her eyes wide. “Right, Daddy?”
“Of course,” he says with a grin, ruffling her hair. “If there’s anyone who can take down a dragon, it’s you.”
You linger in the doorway, unnoticed for a moment, watching the easy way they interact. Areum looks at him like he hung the moon, and Seungcheol, for all his faults, looks at her like she’s his whole world.
“Mommy!” Areum spots you first, her face lighting up. “Daddy’s teaching me how to flip pancakes! Look!” She holds up a spatula triumphantly
“Is he now?” you ask, raising an eyebrow as you step closer. “Just don’t let him burn them.”
“Hey, I’m a pro. You remember.”
You roll your eyes but can’t help the small smile tugging at your lips. It’s moments like this that make it hard to hold on to the walls you’ve built.
As the three of you sit down to breakfast, Areum chatters on about all the things she wants to do before you leave the cabin. Her energy is infectious, and for the first time in a long while, you let yourself relax.
After lunch, Areum insists on having a tea party outside by the lake. She drags Seungcheol along, handing him a tiny pink teacup and a plastic tiara. You try not to laugh as he dutifully places it on his head, his expression serious as Areum pours invisible tea into his cup.
“Daddy, you have to hold your pinky up!” Areum scolds, demonstrating the proper way to hold a teacup.
“Like this?” he asks, holding up his pinky with exaggerated effort.
Areum giggles. “No, Daddy, you’re doing it wrong!”
“Why don’t you join us, Mommy?” Areum calls, waving you over
“Oh, no,” you say, shaking your head. “You and Daddy seem to have it under control.”
“She’s scared of your tea,” Seungcheol teases, winking at you. “Probably thinks it’s too strong.”
You roll your eyes, but your smile betrays you. “I’ll pass, thanks.”
It's the last night at the cabin before going back to normal. After putting Areum to bed, you find Seungcheol on the porch again, leaning against the railing. The moon casts a soft glow on the lake, and the air is cool but pleasant.
“Can’t sleep?” he asks without turning around.
You step out, closing the door quietly behind you. “Something like that.”
He gestures for you to join him, and after a moment’s hesitation, you do. The two of you stand in silence, the sounds of crickets and the gentle lapping of the lake filling the void.
“She’s amazing, you know,” he says finally, his voice low. “Areum. She’s everything good about us.”
You swallow hard, nodding. “She is.”
He turns to look at you then, his gaze soft but intense. “I meant what I said last night,” he murmurs. “I don’t want to lose this again. I don’t want to lose you.”
Your breath catches, but before you can respond, he reaches for your hand. His fingers are warm, steady, as they curl around yours.
“I know it will be hard,” he continues, his voice rough with emotion. “But if there’s even a part of you that still believes in us, I’ll do whatever it takes to prove I’ve changed.”
Tears prick at your eyes, and you look down, unsure of how to respond.
“Cheol…” you start, your voice trembling. “This isn’t just about us anymore. It’s about Areum.”
“I know,” he says, his grip on your hand tightening slightly. “And that’s why I want to do this right. For her. For you.”
For a long moment, you say nothing, your gaze fixed on the horizon. But when you finally look up, you see the sincerity in his eyes, and the walls you’ve built around your heart begin to crumble.
“Okay,” you whisper. “But this time… we take it slow.”
A smile spreads across his face, and for the first time in years, it feels like the start of something new.
The porch is quiet, save for the soft chirping of crickets and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze. Seungcheol’s hand lingers in yours, his thumb brushing over your knuckles in slow, deliberate movements. The air between you feels charged, heavy with unspoken words and emotions that neither of you can ignore anymore.
“Slow,” he repeats, his voice soft but resolute. “I can do slow.”
But the way he’s looking at you now. His gaze warm and searching, dipping from your eyes to your lips makes you doubt his resolve. Your pulse quickens as he steps closer, his presence overwhelming in a way that feels both familiar and new.
“Cheol…” you murmur, unsure whether it’s meant to be a warning or encouragement
“Tell me to stop,” he says, his voice barely above a whisper. His free hand rises, fingers brushing a strand of hair from your face, lingering at your temple. “Tell me, and I will.”
You should say it. You should remind him that Areum is just inside, that this isn’t the time, that you’re still trying to figure things out. But instead, you find yourself leaning into his touch, the warmth of his hand against your skin unraveling the last of your defenses.
He takes your silence as permission and leans down slowly, his lips brushing against yours with an achingly soft tenderness. The kiss is tentative at first, as if he’s afraid you’ll pull away, but when you don’t, it deepens. His hand moves to the small of your back, pulling you closer until your bodies are flush against each other.
The sensation is overwhelming, a rush of emotions you’ve tried so hard to bury. His lips are firm and insistent, and when his teeth graze your lower lip, you let out a soft gasp that seems to ignite something in him. He tilts his head, angling the kiss to deepen it further, and you feel his fingers tighten on your waist.
Your hands find their way to his chest, pressing lightly against the hard muscle beneath his shirt. It’s not a push to stop, but it makes him pause. He pulls back just enough to meet your gaze, his breathing uneven.
“This okay?” he asks, his voice hoarse.
You nod, your fingers curling into his shirt. “Yeah.”
He lets out a soft laugh, pressing his forehead against yours. “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted this.”
His confession sends a shiver through you, but before you can respond, his lips are on yours again. This time, there’s less hesitation. His hand slips under the hem of your sweater, his palm warm against the bare skin of your lower back. The touch is electric, sending sparks racing up your spine.
You can’t help the soft moan that escapes you, and Seungcheol freezes, pulling back abruptly. “Sorry,” he murmurs, his voice strained. “I said slow, and I mean it. I don’t want to mess this up.”
You’re breathless, your cheeks flushed as you look up at him. There’s a vulnerability in his expression that makes your heart ache. “You’re not messing anything up,” you assure him, your fingers still gripping his shirt.
He exhales deeply, resting his hands on your hips but making no move to take things further. “You’re going to be the death of me,” he mutters, half-smiling as he brushes his thumb against your hipbone.
The sound of a soft thud inside the cabin breaks the moment, and both of you freeze, turning toward the door.
“Areum,” you whisper, your heart racing for an entirely different reason now
Seungcheol chuckles under his breath, stepping back and running a hand through his hair. “Guess the universe has a way of keeping me in check.”
You can’t help but laugh softly, shaking your head. “We should check on her.”
He nods, his expression still warm. As you turn to head back inside, he catches your hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Slow,” he repeats, his eyes locking with yours. “But I’m not letting you go this time.”
You smile, the warmth of his words settling deep in your chest. “Okay.”
Inside, Areum is fast asleep, her stuffed rabbit lying on the floor beside her bed. You tuck her back in, brushing a kiss to her forehead before slipping out of the room. As you close the door, Seungcheol is waiting in the hallway, his arms crossed loosely over his chest.
“Goodnight,” you say softly, pausing in front of him
“Goodnight,” he replies, but his eyes linger on you a moment longer before he heads to his own room.
You retreat to your bed, your heart still racing from the night’s events. For the first time in years, you feel a flicker of hope—a possibility of rebuilding what you thought was lost. And as you drift off to sleep, you find yourself looking forward to what tomorrow might bring.
The next morning you were woken up by the sound of Areum’s laughter as she runs through the living room, her stuffed rabbit trailing behind her. Seungcheol is chasing after her, pretending to be a monster, his deep growls making her shriek in delight.
You go down to see the duo having so much energy this early in the day, a fond smiling forming on your face
“Daddy, you’ll never catch me!” Areum taunts, darting behind the couch.
“We’ll see about that!” Seungcheol lunges dramatically, scooping her up and tossing her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
“Put me down!” she squeals, though her giggles betray her delight.
“Okay, okay, you win!” she says between giggles.
He sits beside her, brushing a strand of hair out of her face. “That’s what I thought. Who’s the champ?”
“You are!” she says, sticking her tongue out at him before turning her attention to you. “Mommy! Come sit with us!”
You join them on the couch, Areum immediately climbing into your lap and wrapping her arms around your neck. “Did you have fun this weekend, sweetheart?” you ask, smoothing her hair
“Yes! It was the best birthday ever!” she exclaims, her eyes lighting up. Then, as if remembering something important, she leans back to look at both you and Seungcheol, her expression suddenly serious
“What is it, Areum?” you ask her
She takes a deep breath, her little brows furrowed in concentration. “Yesterday, when I blew out my candles, I made a wish.”
You and Seungcheol exchange a quick glance, his brow lifting in curiosity "We remember, what about it sweet girl?"
"I thought about it a lot. And since Mommy and Daddy are best friends” she pauses to give each of you a knowing look, “—I thought maybe you could make it happen.”
Seungcheol bursts into laughter, ruffling Areum’s hair. “That’s quite the request, princess.”
“But you always say you’d do anything for me!” she counters, crossing her arms in a way that makes her look far older than six.
You bite back a smile, trying to keep your tone serious. “Sweetheart, it doesn’t exactly work like that.”
“Why not?” she asks, tilting her head.
“Well,” Seungcheol jumps in, his voice warm and teasing, “it’s not something that happens overnight. It takes time and a lot of love.”
Areum seems to consider this, her little face scrunching up in thought. Then she looks at the two of you, her smile returning. “That’s okay! I can wait. As long as you promise!”
You and Seungcheol both laugh, and he reaches over to give her a hug. “We’ll see what we can do, princess. No promises, but we’ll try our best.”
“Yay!” Areum cheers, completely satisfied with that answer. She wriggles out of your lap and runs off to find her toys, leaving the two of you alone.
As soon as Areum disappears down the hall, Seungcheol turns to you, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. “Well, that was unexpected.”
You laugh, shaking your head. “She’s bold. Definitely takes after you.”
“Me?” he protests, feigning offense. “I think she takes after her mom. You’ve got a pretty bold streak yourself.”
“So, what do we tell her if she asks again?”
Seungcheol leans back, his gaze softening as he looks at you. “We tell her the truth. That we’re figuring things out, but we’ll always be a family—no matter what.”
“And hey,” he adds, his tone teasing, “if she really wants a sibling, I guess we’ve got our work cut out for us.”
You swat his arm, laughing despite yourself. “Don’t get ahead of yourself, Choi Seungcheol.”
He grins, reaching for your hand and intertwining your fingers. “No rush,” he says softly, his eyes locking with yours. “We’ll take it one step at a time.”
And as you sit there, hand in hand, you can’t help but feel that, for the first time in a long while, you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

Summary: Kai's on his apology tour, and Y/N is his next stop after things didn't go too well with Damon or Bonnie
Word Count: 2,000
Category: Fluff, Humor, a little bit of Angst
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
I sighed to myself as I headed downstairs in my favorite pair of sweats, mentally making a list of everything I had to do today. It was an unfortunately long list, compounded by the latest supernatural drama, which my friends insisted on dragging me into. Bonnie had finally made it home from the prison world, thankfully, but that didn't mean any of the drama in our lives had gone away. In fact, it had almost doubled, with news of Damon's mother floating around in another prison world somewhere. I got halfway through an eyeroll at the memory of everything going on lately when I stopped dead in my tracks.
I could smell bacon, eggs, and toast wafting up towards me from the kitchen. Someone was here, in my house, cooking breakfast. And with everything going on lately, I knew for a fact it wasn't one of my friends.
I glanced around, grabbing a stake off the nearest end table. No vampire should have been able to get into my house unless they were a friend I'd already let in, but I'd had enough near-death experiences despite that fact that I was constantly prepared.
I crept towards the kitchen, trying to listen for any signs of trap or trouble. All I could hear was a faint clinking of plates. If someone had seriously broken into my house, why the hell were they just hanging out in my kitchen making breakfast?
I got my answer a second later when I burst through the door, going for the element of surprise, and found none other than Kai Parker standing before me.
"Oh, hey!" he said, jumping and spinning to face me with wide eyes. "You're up!"
"...Yup. And... you're here. In my kitchen. Making breakfast."
"Yeah! I hope you like it. Here, let me get your plate. I thought I'd have a few more minutes."
With that, he turned to the stove and starting scooping scrambled eggs and toast onto a plate. I just watched him, not moving an inch.
"Kai?"
"Yeah?"
"What the hell are you doing in my house?"
He turned back around to look at me again, his eyes wide and the plate half-finished in his hand. After a moment, his expression morphed into a sheepish grin. I just blinked at him, my expression unchanging.
"Well, after I merged with Luke, I started getting all these... feelings." He said the word like somebody else might say 'zits' or 'rash'. "And one of those has been guilt, for some of the stuff I put you through. Or I guess, your friends, mostly. I tried apologizing to Bonnie earlier, and... it didn't go well."
His expression darkened, and I frowned. But a moment later, the clouds apparently cleared, and Kai fixed me with a beaming smile again.
"So I thought I'd try again with you. In the Prison World, I saw Damon making Bonnie breakfast all the time, and she seemed to really like that. So I figured you might, too."
I just stared at him for a few long moments without saying anything. I turned my options over and over in my mind, trying to get my still half-asleep brain to make a rational choice. I probably should've been incredibly freaked out that Kai was here at all, but I'd actually had a few positive interactions with him even before the whole merge thing, and had kind of started to like him. Or, at least, started to think he had some ally potential, despite other things he did. We'd even bonded over music taste and his new fascination with social media, and he'd tried to help Sheriff Forbes, although it hadn't necessarily been out of the goodness of his heart. For some reason, I just couldn't muster the fear or anger I probably should've been feeling when I looked at him in my house. Finally, I sighed, my mind made up. No reason to try to force bad feelings when they wouldn't come on their own, right?
"Thanks, Kai," I said, actually meaning it as I moved over to the dining table. "Aside from the fact that you broke into my house to do it... that's actually pretty sweet."
He beamed at me, and I found myself returning his smile. He turned back around to finish making my plate, and I shook my head. This was absolutely ridiculous, but I couldn't say I minded very much.
"Here you go!" he said, setting the plate down in front of me with a big smile. He didn't move away, just standing off to the side and watching me expectantly. I picked up my fork, but didn't take my eyes off Kai.
"...Aren't you gonna join me?"
"Oh! Right. You know, I've been practicing how I was going to do this in my head all morning, and now that I'm actually doing it it's like I completely forgot everything I was planning to do. That's weird, right?"
I shrugged. "I mean, sounds like a normal part of being nervous to me."
He nodded emphatically as he returned to the table and sat across from me with a breakfast plate of his own.
"All these new... emotions from Luke have been, like, super weird. I don't know how you all deal with these all the time."
"Eh, yeah, they can be annoying sometimes. It gets easier with practice though, and I'd say on the whole they're a positive experience."
Kai nodded thoughtfully, taking a bite of his eggs as his gaze wandered around my kitchen. I took a few bites of my own food, and I had to admit, he was a surprisingly good cook.
"So..." I started. "Was this it for the apology? It's a great breakfast, but usually an apology has a little more attached..."
"Oh!" Kai's attention snapped back to me. "No no, this isn't it. I was planning to do the other part of the apology while we ate breakfast."
"Makes sense. Go for it."
He cleared his throat and shifted around in his seat, then met my eyes before hesitating again. I tried to look encouraging as I ate my eggs, and after a moment, he nodded to himself and continued.
"I'm sorry for trying to kill your friend, and testing out my power on her. And that I couldn't save your other friend's mom, even though I really couldn't do anything about that. I still... I still feel bad. And honestly, I'm mostly sorry for everything I've done that hurt you, even if it was indirectly. I... I actually really like you, and so, uh... I don't want you to hate me. I keep getting this stabbing pain in my chest when I think about it... or when I think about that time I saw you crying over Bonnie..."
He trailed off, staring at the table instead of me, apparently lost in thought. After a moment though, he shook his head and cleared his throat, looking back up to meet my stare again. His blue eyes were wider than usual, his eyebrows pulling together, and he looked to be in actual distress for maybe the first time I'd ever seen, at least when his life wasn't being threatened.
"I'm sorry, Y/N. I promise not to do anything to hurt you again. Will you give me a second chance?"
The corner of my mouth quirked up in a smile, especially at the rare senserity in his tone. I knew my friends would have quite a few things to say about this decision, but I didn't let myself think about that. At least not right now.
I sighed. "Kai, despite the fact that you broke into my house, I'm going to believe you about this whole 'turning over new leaf' thing. I... I'd be lying if I said I didn't like you too. So, if you really mean what you're saying about not hurting me or the people I care about anymore?"
He nodded so fast I was actually a little worried about him.
"Completely serious. Cross my heart and hope to die. I'm ready to join the Mystic Falls Scooby Doo team for good."
I smiled, laughing a little and shaking my head.
"Well, okay then. I can't promise anybody else on the team will be quite as easy to convince as me, but... I forgive you, Kai. I'm happy to see you like this. And, by the way, you make some very good eggs and toast."
"Thanks. I had to get good at cooking, you know, alone in the Prison World." A shadow passed over his face again, until I reached across the table and lightly rested my hand on top of his. Then, his face lit up like the sun. "And thanks for giving me a second chance. I promise, you won't regret it."
I wasn't totally sure I believed that, but I decided not to say so. Instead, I smiled and gave his hand a little squeeze before pulling back.
After a moment of silence where I could see Kai vibrating with the desire to say whatever he was holding back, he finally blurted out the other thing he'd apparently been planning to ask me this morning.
"So... I might be a little rusty about how all this works, or if it's changed since the eighties, but... would you want to go out with me sometime? Like on a date?"
I smiled, then buried my face in my hands. My friends would kill me if I said yes to this, but despite myself, I really, really wanted to.
"What's wrong?" Kai asked. I shook my head and looked up at him again.
"Nothing, Kai, I just... ugh, my friends are really not going to like this."
He smiled. "Does that mean you're saying yes?"
I took a deep breath and let it out, then shrugged and matched his smile with one of my own.
"Yeah. Yeah, I think it does. What the hell, right?"
"That's great! I was thinking we could go do karaoke? I've always loved karaoke. I got good at it when I was passing time in the Prison World."
"I have to warn you, I am very much not good at karaoke. But I'll still sing my heart out with you anyway, if you want to go!"
"Perfect! We can go tonight." I laughed, and Kai's expression immediately dropped. "Is that okay? Do you not want to go tonight?"
"No, Kai, I do. It's a little fast, honestly, but I don't mind. Why wait?"
"That's exactly what I was thinking. So... should I pick you up? Around seven? We could get dinner first, and then go."
"I think that sounds like a great plan, Kai," I smiled at him, which he immediately returned. A moment later, though, his hand shot up to clutch at his chest.
"Ugh, what is... what is happening to me? Why does my heart feel like it's about to explode?"
"That's probably excitement, Kai, or butterflies, which are like positive nerves. I'm feeling them too. It's because we're looking forward to going out together tonight."
Kai made a face. "This is what people were talking about when they said they got butterflies? This is terrible." I hid a laugh behind my hand, and Kai's eyes snapped up to mine. "Wait. You said you were feeling it too?"
I nodded, and Kai's expression immediately changed to a wide grin.
"So you're excited, too?"
"Yeah. Yeah, I am."
He nodded, the smile staying on his face as he dug in to his eggs again, glancing at me between almost every bite. I just shook my head, a smile on my own face all the same. This was going to be an adventure, going on a date with Kai Parker, and I knew my friends were going to want to murder me for it. But I couldn't totally bring myself to care.
Despite some pretty rocky history, I had a weirdly good feeling about Kai, from the moment he'd started his apology speech this morning. And so far, I'd never been wrong when I trusted my gut for stuff like this, even when it led me into karaoke. I had a good feeling it was going to be right about Kai Parker, too.

July 2024.
England were champions of Europe.
Holy shit.
Holy Shit.
The final whistle echoes through the stadium, and suddenly, the roar of the crowd is all you can hear. England has done it—they've won the Euro 2024 final.
The dream of bringing football home is finally a reality. And at the heart of it all is your husband, Harry, the team’s captain, who played a pivotal role with a perfect assist to Cole Palmer in the 25th minute and then scored the winning goal in the 75th.
The energy in the stadium is electric, with every fan on their feet, celebrating this moment that will go down in history.
You sit in the stands, next to Phil Fodens girlfriend Rebecaa, whose little boy Ronnie has been playing with your little one Hunter.
Throughout the match, he held up a sign that read "Bring it home, Daddy," and now, as the victory sinks in, you feel an overwhelming surge of pride and emotion.
After the trophy ceremony, where Harry had lifted the Euro 2024 trophy high amidst a sea of teammates, you and Rebecca made your way down to the pitch, the atmosphere still buzzing with celebration.
As you approached the field, Hunter, bursting with excitement, broke free from your hand and sprinted ahead, his little voice ringing out,
“Daddy! Daddy!”
Harry, turning at the sound of his son’s voice, immediately dropped to one knee, his face lighting up with pure joy.
“Buddy!” he called back, his arms wide open as he prepared to catch his little boy.
Hunter didn’t slow down, running straight into Harry’s embrace.
“Daddy, you did it! You really did it!” he shouted, his voice filled with awe and pride.
Harry scooped him up, holding him close as if he never wanted to let go.
“We did it, buddy,” Harry said, his voice thick with emotion as he kissed the top of Hunter’s head. “I told you we’d bring it home, didn’t I?”
Hunter nodded eagerly, his small hands gripping Harry’s jersey. “You’re the best, Daddy! You’re a hero!”
Harry laughed, a sound full of warmth and love.
“No, buddy, you’re my hero,” he said softly, looking into his son’s wide, admiring eyes. “You gave me all the strength I needed out there. That sign you made… it made all the difference.”
Hunter beamed, his pride shining brighter than the stadium lights. “I knew you could do it, Daddy! I knew it!”
As you watched Harry spin Hunter around, the joy on their faces was everything you had ever hoped for.
You took a few steps forward, your heart full to bursting with pride and love. Harry caught your eye and gently set Hunter down, still smiling as he straightened up and reached out for you.
The distance between you vanished in an instant, and before you knew it, you were wrapped in his arms.
He pulled you close, his embrace warm and strong, the scent of sweat and victory clinging to him. You looked up into his eyes, the same eyes that had captured your heart years ago, now shining with triumph and love.
Without a word, you leaned in, pressing your lips to his in a kiss that was filled with everything you felt—pride, joy, and an overwhelming love that only deepened with every passing day.
When you pulled back, you rested your forehead against his, your hands still on his chest.
“I’m so proud of you, H,” you whispered, your voice full of emotion. “You were incredible out there. You made history.”
Harry smiled, his eyes softening as he looked at you.
“I couldn’t have done it without you,” he replied, his voice equally tender. “You and Hunter… you both gave me the strength to push through.”
You shook your head slightly, your eyes welling up with tears of happiness. “No, this was all you. You led them to victory. You brought football home. And you did it with so much heart.”
Harry’s hand cupped your cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray tear.
“I wanted to make you proud,” he said softly, his gaze never leaving yours. “More than anything, I wanted to do this for you and Hunter.”
You smiled, feeling your heart swell even more. “You’ve always made me proud, H. Today, you just reminded the whole world why.”
You pulled back slightly, a mischievous smile tugging at the corners of your lips.
“Harry,” you began softly, your voice full of warmth and excitement. “There’s one more thing we need to do before we can really celebrate.”
Harry raised an eyebrow, his expression curious but still glowing with happiness.
“What is it?” he asked, his hand still resting on your waist.
You bit your lip, your heart racing as you looked down at Hunter, who was still beaming with pride.
“Look at the back of Hunter’s jersey,” you said, your voice trembling just a little with the anticipation of the moment.
Harry’s brow furrowed in confusion, but he turned to crouch down beside Hunter, gently guiding him to turn around. At first, he just stared at the back of the tiny jersey, reading the words out loud without fully processing them.
“Big Brother…?”
He paused, the words hanging in the air as his mind started to catch up. For a moment, there was just silence, his eyes still on the jersey as the realization slowly dawned.
Then, like a light switch flicking on, his head snapped up to look at you, his eyes wide with disbelief and hope.
“Wait… does this mean…?” he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.
You nodded, your eyes brimming with tears of joy, a wide smile spreading across your face.
“Yes, H,” you whispered, your voice full of emotion. “I’m pregnant. We’re having another baby.”
For a second, Harry was completely still, as if he couldn’t quite believe what he was hearing. Then, in an instant, his face lit up with the purest joy you had ever seen.
He scooped you into his arms, lifting you off the ground as he spun you around, laughing with sheer happiness.
“Oh my God, are you serious?” he exclaimed, his voice cracking with emotion.
You laughed, nodding as he set you down, his hands still holding your waist as if he couldn’t bear to let go.
“I’m serious, H. We’re going to be a family of four.”
He let out a joyous shout, his eyes glistening with happy tears as he pulled you close again, pressing his forehead to yours.
“I can’t believe it… This is the best day of my life,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “First we bring football home, and now this? I’m the luckiest man in the world.”
Hunter, who had been watching the exchange with wide eyes, finally caught on and tugged on Harry’s sleeve.
“Daddy, I’m gonna be a big brother!” he declared, his excitement bubbling over.
Harry crouched down again, pulling Hunter into a hug, his voice filled with pride and love. “Yes, you are, buddy. You’re going to be the best big brother ever.”
He looked back up at you, his eyes still shining.
“I don’t even know what to say,” he admitted, shaking his head in amazement. “You’ve made me so happy, more than I ever thought possible.”
You leaned in, kissing him softly, your heart full to bursting with love. “You deserve it, Harry. You’ve given me everything, and now our family is growing.”
Harry’s smile was so wide it looked like it might never fade.
“This is our moment,” he said, his voice full of certainty and joy. “Our family, our future… I can’t wait to do this with you.”

You opened your eyes scanning the room you're in, first you saw the curtains shut. Clothes neatly pilled on the side, a messy stack of books and parchment. Then you turned around and saw the back of Remus's head as he slept peacefully. Thoughts of guilt, lust and memories flooded your head. You began to think whether he regrets last night, was it just a drunk mistake, what do you say to him when he wakes up. You felt him move and turn towards you, on his face a gentle smile. "Morning dear, how'd you sleep?" He asked and kissed your forehead.
"Really well, you?" He scooped you closer with his arms to his chest.
"Let's ignore the conversation we have to have now and just savour this moment." He whispered while cuddling close to you.
"I like that idea." You replied breathing in his smell. Your heart felt full and you felt so comfortable like this was the place you were waiting to be your whole life, and he didn't seem to regret it but rather welcome it.
"Now dear would you like some coffee? Breakfast?" He asked softly not letting you go.
"What a gentleman." You joked in return.
"I try my best." He said with a wink before kissing the top of your head and standing up, he put on a T-shirt and his trousers from last night. "I'll start making the coffee, rest as long as you want."
You lay there in naked confusion and bliss, you were happy but you were confused. You had no idea how you will face him in class after waking up in his bed. You got out of bed putting on yesterdays clothes and grabbing one of Remus's sweaters for warmth before making your way down to the kitchen. The room smelt of coffee, Remus looked younger for a moment with messy hair and wearing no socks on the cold floor as he made coffee. He turned around with a smile. "Good morning, nice jumper." He said with a wink. He winked a lot you noted, maybe he was just as nervous as you right now. "Do you like it with milk or black?" He asked.
"Splash of milk please, no sugar." You confirmed and he followed your instructions and handed it to you. "Perfect thank you."
"Care to join me on the roof for a smoke and coffee? Then we can think of breakfast plans." He said walking towards the stair case and you followed. You sat down side by side on two chairs, it was cold but you didn't mind. "You know this has always been my guilty pleasure, coffee and a cig the morning after, I thought it made me cool." He admitted looking out onto London.
"It makes you look cold, I'm not sure if cool is the right word." You said and he laughed lightly to response, shaking his head.
"It used to calm my nerves because I wasn't sure what to do with a girl in the morning after, how guys are meant to act, so I figured out to start my mornings with a smoke and conversation, not that this is a common occurrence."
"What you don't sleep with your students often?" you joked to ease your discomfort about this whole situation.
"I don't sleep with anyone often, especially students."
"Why?"
"Because they're my students and I have somewhat of a professional-" You interrupted him by saying "No I mean why don't you sleep with people often."
"Y/N you know what I am."
"So?"
"So, being around me, close to me is not only dangerous but also a burden to a persons life. Therefore I've found it's better to focus on solitude and not burden anyone else who I may possibly care for. Y/N I am not a man I am-" You once again cut in to stop Remus Lupin from his usual self-loathing pit. "I'm hungry."
He quickly checked his watch "We could go to a bakery about 5 minutes away they should be open, we can grab some pastries if you'd like."
"What time is it?" You asked in fear.
"Half past nine, why do you need to be somewhere?" He asked with a slight painful tang behind his voice.
"The Weasleys, I was meant to be staying there. I need to go before they all wake up." You said leaving your coffee and heading down to Remus's bedroom, Remus followed you down.
"I'm sure you'll be okay, just tell them you fell asleep on the sofa." He tried to calm you as you put on your jacket and gathered your belongings.
"No, I'll never hear the end of this. Molly will kill me." You said in panic.
"Y/N you're an adult they'll understand, just stay finish your coffee, I can write to Molly that you are here." He said placing a hand on your shoulder to calm you.
"I'm sorry Remus I don't want to run like this but I have to, I don't want to try and explain why I'm here in the morning. Happy new year." You simply said to him as his face dropped into a frown.
"Happy New Year." He said quietly and you apparated to the Weasleys house. You didn't know that you left Remus with a feeling of enormous guilt, he felt like he used the opportunity of you drunk to sleep with you and now you regretted it. He was reminded of your age by the way you rushed home, you may be eighteen but you still sometimes behaved like someone's daughter and that made Remus feel uneasy about perusing you, especially when you have to rush home the morning after. Rush home to a friend of his. The guilt ate him alive as he cleaned the coffee that you didn't finished and put out your half-smoked cigarette. In that moment he made a decision, he messed up, he got close to you and kissed you because he couldn't control himself and based on how you ran out the house you obviously regretted everything.
You on the other hand felt guilty for leaving, Remus treated you nicer than anyone else you've ever slept with, he made you coffee, he cared, it filled your heart with warmth, you knew you'll have to apologise for how you left. You slowly walked through the house up to the spare room you were staying in when you bumped into Percy who was going to the bathroom. He gave you a quick look up and down in a judgmental way and didn't even say hi, then as you passed the twins' room they opened the door with big grins. "Nice jumper." They both said at once. You looked down and saw you left in Remus's jumper.
"Shit." You took it off in that very moment in panic. "Don't tell anyone." You warned them.
"Our lips are sealed." They said in unison. "Although we will high five him next time we see him." Fred shrugged.
"Don't you dare Weasley." You warned.
"So how was sleeping with our dear professor?" George asked.
"Was it everything you dreamed of?" Fred added.
"I don't want to talk about it."
"Was it at least good?" Fred pushed.
"The best I've ever had. And he made me coffee in the morning and hugged me and kissed me." You felt like you were melting just thinking about it.
"The best?" Fred repeated.
"Who knew prof would be so good." George added.
"Let's not talk about it, I actually have to sit in his class after this." You felt a bit sick at the idea, that was the end of that conversation. You quickly went to take a shower and change. After that you wrote a letter to Remus apologising about leaving so soon and thanking him for the coffee. He didn't reply. You sent him another three letters over the next few days making sure he's okay however he didn't reply. So you got the message, and he did regret it, he was just being nice to you in the morning because he was a good person. You were nervous to go back to Hogwarts but you decided you won't let New Years stop you. You came back a week before term, and you thought it may be good to bump into Remus before term starts to talk. You went to the bridge but he didn't, you knocked on his office but no one answered, you even tried to find him using the map but it was like he was always waking away from you.
You finally saw him on the first day of term, he was sitting eating breakfast in the great hall with all the teachers. You received and owl and it was from him but he didn't look up at you at all.  The letter read:
"Welcome back to the new term miss L/N.
As previously agreed our tutoring continues to prepare you for you exams.
- Professor R.J.Lupin"
You looked up at him but he didn't look at you.
In his lesson that day you sat nervously in your seat, you were sitting next to Sebastian as you and Percy weren't on talking terms after New Years. "Are you okay?" Sebastian whispered watching you move around in your seat nervously waiting for Lupin to arrive to the classroom.
"Just nervous about exams." You explained to him, he put a hand on your leg to steady it. "It's okay you'll do great, I've got some calming fraught if you want it though." He said and you nodded. He slipped  you the potion and you drank it, you didn't realise that around the time Sebastian put his hand on your leg Remus was walking in the classroom and watching the whole interaction. "Better?" Sebastian asked and you nodded in response. "Thank you." You said and he gave you a smile before moving his hand from your leg as you had stopped shaking from stress. Remus cleared his throat as he stood at the front of the classroom. "Welcome back I hope you've all had a good new year," Remus said, looking at you intensely during the last three words. You instantly felt hot however because of the position you didn't feel worried instead slightly turned on as you looked back at him, after a moment of eye contact he ripped his eyes away.
"Now I'm sure you're all nervous, but I will get you as prepared for your exams as possible all I ask is for you to listen and pay attention and that way I can help you." He continued, his eyes kept catching yours as if he couldn't look away and you were now enjoying the attention as all stress had left your body. However the closer to the end of the lesson it got the more the potion started to wear off and you could no longer look Lupin in the eye, he noticed the change in you and was very confused, he simply couldn't read you, he knew you took a potion however he wasn't sure what you took, he suspected it was calming draught but he had to ask you in your tutoring session if you show up. You considered skipping it but you knew you had to speak to Remus sooner or later and you didn't want to fail your exams because of him.
You lightly knocked on his office door filled with a bit of anxiety, he was sitting marking papers when you came in and he smiled gently at you but you could see he was on edge just like you. "Good afternoon Miss L/N. I hope you had a good Christmas." He greeted you and it filled you with anger that he was just pretending nothing happened.
"Can we talk?" You asked quietly sitting down on a chair near the front.
"Is it about your studies?"
"Obviously not." You snarked and he sighed pulling up a chair opposite you.
"We shouldn't, it's my responsibility to prepare you for your exams and" he began before you interrupted with a simple. "Remus." He loosened his tie and sighed.
"I'm really sorry Y/N. I'm really sorry for what I did, I should've been the responsible adult, I'm your teacher for fuck sake." He began and he looked visibly upset.
"Do you regret it?" You asked gently.
"Obviously, I shouldn't have put you in that situation. I pushed myself onto you, I knew my feelings for you I shouldn't have spoken to you at all if I was drinking."
"But I wanted to kiss you."
"Y/N I'm your teacher." He said as a matter of fact.
"So I don't care do you? Answer honestly."
"No." He shook his head and swallowed hard.
"Would you want to kiss me again?" He did say anything he just looked at your lips. "Answer honestly Remus." You added and he shook his head.
"Then do it." His eyes didn't leave your lips for a moment and then he made eye contact with you and he simply said "I can't."
"Why?" You asked him pleading.
"Because I am falling incredibly hard for you, and all I'm going to do is hurt you. Because I am your teacher. Because I can't offer you anything much more than a tea and a great music taste and an awful lot of knowledge on books."
"I don't care, you made me feel special, you make me feel loved."  You continued to beg.
"Don't lie to me I saw how you ran out the house." He said with a angry and annoyed tone.
"I wrote to you three time to apologies, and you ignored every single letter." You said feeling like you're about to cry.
"You did?" His complexion changed suddenly.
"Yes. But I got the message that you rather ignore all this happened."
"Y/N, I wanted to make you coffee, take care of you and then talk to you like an adult about what this means for our lives here, but you ran out and the only letter I received was this from Percy." He said pulling out a letter that was crumbled up in his pocket, the address was Hogwarts, of course, all your letters went to the cottage but he didn't go there he came straight to the castle it all clicked.
"Why did Percy write to you?" You asked softly and he just handed you the letter to read.
"Dear professor Lupin,
As head boy I urge to remind you that you are our professor within and outside school grounds. And I believe you don't need to be reminded of school rules, especially for a man with your condition losing this job may be disastrous.
Happy new year, P. Weasley Head boy of Gryffindor"
"That prick." You said quietly and looked up at Remus. "I promise I didn't tell him anything."
"How would he know?" Remus asked he looked like you betrayed him.
"Your jumper," you began and Remus have you a puzzled look. "I came home in it the morning after and Percy saw me, he gave me a look of hate, we haven't talked since." You answered honestly. "Remus I'm sorry about this, can you ignore it and can we have this conversation based on our own opinions." You said and Remus sighed.
"No matter what I am your teacher and we've crossed a line."
"How do you expect me to focus in your lessons after what you've done to me professor?"
"Fuck you calling me professor like it doesn't turn you on." He said looking away and taking a deep shaky breath. "Can I kiss you one last time dear?" He asked and you nodded. And he leaned over the desk to kiss you slowly, the kiss was desperate and slow, as if he was savouring the moment, he put a hand on your cheek and tucked your hair behind your ear just like he did that first morning.
"Don't make it the last." You said as soon as he pulled away.
"Dear, as soon as you realise I'm just a broke man who's been cursed since childhood the sooner you'll realise you don't want me, so many men will be able to offer you the world, I won't."
"I hate you, I hate that you won't even give yourself a chance to be happy." You said feeling like you're about to cry.
"Y/N I'm trying to protect you." He pleaded.
"Or maybe you're just trying to protect yourself from feeling any good emotion in your life?" You said standing up. "Maybe you don't realise you're hurting me by not even trying, by leading me on."
"I'm sorry Y/N, I truly don't know what I'm doing, I wish I was, let's leave this conversation for another day let's start working on revision."
"Remus how am I meant to sit here and listen to you teach me while all I can think about is wether you like me just for sex, wether it's because you get turned on by fucking your student, wether you're just lonely and I'm convenient or wether an ounce of you actually cares about me."
"Y/N, if you want to have this conversation with me you need to act your age not frantically shout your thoughts at me like a school girl." He said harshly his mood becoming a lot more authoritarian.
"I am a school girl! I hate you Remus Lupin, I hate how you treat me, I hate you for making me feel like I mattered for you to just change your mind when it's convenient. I hate Percy for that letter. But I really hate you." You said pushing the tears away from your eyes.
"I'm not surprised, I hate me too." He said looking down at the desk and then he went silent.
"No Remus. I didn't mean-" You began realising your emotions got the better of you, truly you were scared about how much you liked him, how dependent you were becoming on him, how life wasn't the same without him.
"You've said enough. Goodbye." Remus said turning around and walking upstairs to his office without a single turn back to face you. And that was the last time you saw Remus Lupin that week, the next lesson you had with Lupin was taken over by Snape, and even your tutoring was now with McGonagall. Lupin returned on Friday evening, you saw him in the great hall during dinner, that's when you received and owl from him which was rare during dinner...

Sway The Stars Which Dazzle Like Pearls
Pairing: Din Djarin x female!reader
Fandom: The Mandalorian
Warnings: reader is mute due to trauma that isn't specified and uses sign language taught to her by Din, everything in italics is being signed.
A/N: I feel like I haven't written anything in forever and I was worried about not being able to get this done in time and that if I did that it wouldn't be good enough anyway. But, here it is, good or bad. If I got anything wrong as far as communicating via sign language, let me know so I can do better! My fic for the Summer Lovin' 2024 writing challenge. @pedgito @chaotic-mystery
Tumblr media
The planet they land on seems to have an eternal night, a never ending full moon and black sand beaches. Here, the stars reflect perfectly in the still waters, a mirror image of the galaxy spread out above. She walks down the Razor Crest's ramp silently, assessing these surroundings with a sharp eye.
He watches her squat down on her haunches to scoop up a handful of the dark sand, crushing it around between her fingers like she's feeling for the quality of an expensive fabric woven on a far off planet. Her face gives little away of what she is thinking.
Din doesn't know much about her past, about what happened before he found her stowed away on the Crest and petrified of her own shadow after his (first) explosive departure from Nevarro, the tiny green kid in tow.
All he knows is that she can't talk. The words are there, he can see them tumbling around behind her eyes, but they seem to get clogged up in her throat, like a gummed up hyperdrive. So he'd started teaching her to sign.
Her footsteps crunch the gravel-sand as she makes her way over to his side, brushing her hands together to clean off the excess sand but some grains still cling to the creases between her fingers, almost sparkling in the moonlight like jewelry. She pins him with a questioning gaze and signs
'Why?'
"Why what?" he motions backs and she fumbles another word, face scrunched in frustration until she finds her rhythm
'Why are we here? Bounty?"
Din shakes his head, considering what he would call this little excursion between jobs before he replies with
"Pitstop, for fun"
"You do fun?" she pulls her mouth into a smirk, pleased at her little joke.
Din tries not to sigh. He's glad they can communicate so freely now, it's light-years better than their rough early days where any movement to sudden or big had her flinching away violently. But he has no idea how she learned to put so much sarcasm into her gestures. Not that he minds now. Anything is better than seeing that unfiltered terror in her eyes.
"Come" he turns and takes a step toward the gently lapping waters edge but doesn't hear her follow, he turns back with a questioning tilt of his helmet
"What is it?" she asks, expression concerned, still rooted in place
"Something good" he assures
"Promise?"
"Yes."
When they reach the water, the ship and the sleeping green child inside it are only a few yards away, a hulking silhouette jutting out of the otherwise flat landscape.
Pulling off his gloves and tucking them safely away, Din crouches down, the toes of his boots touching the water. His companion mimics him, watching carefully as he slowly submerges his hands in the water before carefully feeling around in the wet sand below.
She taps her knuckles into the soft place just below his beskar pauldron, knowing from unfortunate experience not to catch the armor with her bare hands, furrowing her brows when he turns to look at her, seeing her ask
"What are you looking for?"
"Just wait" Din says aloud and she leans back to sit properly on the ground, still curiously watching him dig around, one of her own hands drawing meaningless shapes in the sand beside her.
It takes him a few tries before he finds it, a small orb made and shaped by time and natural forces until it was washed ashore, waiting to be found.
Sitting back beside her, Din holds out his find nestled in the palm of his hand. It stands out stark white and shining in the odd moonlight.
She signs something he doesn't recognize at first, she watches him for a moment, waiting, and then tries again
"Diamond"
"No, pearl" he says out loud and signs it once, twice, then watches her repeat the motion.
The first few times are uncertain as her eyes dart between her hands and his, studying the movement he makes which shapes this new word. Then a couple more times, each with more confidence until
"Pearl" she signs, grinning over at him
"Good" Din smiles beneath his helmet, holding out the pearl to her, an offering.
"Mine?" she quirks a brow at him, still uneasy with receiving things she doesn't feel she has earned.
Din just watches her, hand outstretched and waiting patiently for her to accept this small gratitude.
Eventually, with the barest brush of her fingertips across his naked palm, she takes the pearl. Holding it reverently, worry flashing across her face before she curls her hand around the gifted treasure.
Din had learned to sit with silence long before he met her, so he turns his head out toward the water, then upward just a little, like he's watching the stars.
He isn't. He is giving her the privacy to feel those sometimes tumultuous emotions that come with receiving a gift.
She frowns at her closed fist, lips pulled down in a deep scowl. If her eyes look a bit glossy, she would never admit it. There's a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach, a roiling feeling that urges her to not accept this. Not to trust.
But she can see the Mandalorian from the corner of her eye, pretending to watch the stars, nervously rubbing the tips of his fingers together and smearing the gritty sand there until it sloughs off and back onto the beach.
Her courage feels like a finite thing, urgently flopping around in her chest like a gasping fish on land. She leans over closer to the Mandalorian, sees his helmet shift but not quite turn fully toward her as she wraps her arms around his bicep, the pauldron on his shoulder cold even through her shirt.
Hugging him feels like a monumental leap, her cheek pressed against the mudhorn sigil on his beskar shoulder. Her courage has waned and she feels weak, vulnerable, but the little pearl clutched in her hand reminds her that it isn't gone for good.
That it is okay to lean into her companion, her friend, who seems like a forever sturdy rock in the storm that has eclipsed her life.
Awkwardly, arms still wrapped around her Mandalorian's arm, she tells him
"Thank you."
Din makes a sound of acknowledgement, smiling gently beneath his helmet and watching her from the corner of his eye. Her face seems content and his chest constricts in pride, to see that he has hopefully earned her trust enough for her to relax in his presence.
"You're not even looking at the stars" she softly accuses, leaning forward to fully grab his attention
"Neither are you" he retorts.
She huffs a small laugh, tilting her head and raising a hand slowly toward the smooth metal cheek of his helmet. She guides him so they are face to face. Sort of.
They stare, her watching the reflection of the stars in the visor of his helmet, wondering just a little if his eyes are bright beneath all this beskar. If he's looking at her as gratefully as she is him.
Din watches her face, unsure about the hand she has on his helmet, but far more distracted with trying to decipher her expression. Joy seems too big, maybe contentment?
Either way, neither one of them is watching the stars turn above them, a precious pearl clutched between them, a symbol of more. Of hope.

Daily. {March (FOM) x Reader/Farmer}
Description:
A fic in which March doesn’t like changes to his daily routine.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
Tags: fluff, a swear word or two (or three), drinking, alcohol mention, hemlock spotted!!! Being a dad!!!, CLINGY and PATHETIC march agenda, not betad, not edited, gender neutral reader, fields of mistria/fom x reader/farmer, march x reader, march (fields of mistria)/(FOM) x reader/farmer, whatever tag you want i guess go crazy with ur imagination,
Word Count: 2,879
A/N: Written on: October 7, 2024
I wonder if i love march because i usually AM the march. Self-conscious. Angry. Unapproachable. Dyed hair. Likes to hit things with hammers and gets way too happy when drunk. Anyway, LKSJDFHIUE fields of mistria helped me through terrible time recently; i scooped up its early access almost IMMEDIATELY and have been so in love with it since!!
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
He hadn’t realized it, but March grew fairly used to seeing that new farmer pass by the forge day after day. It became almost... routine, to see them from his peripheral and feel the twitch of his brow, ignoring the sudden increase of heat against his face that was surely from the forge he busied himself with.
Some days they’d stop to annoy him, while he’d spare a few words out of the kindness of his heart, other days they’d simply throw him a smile and a wave, continuing their walk to wherever it was they’d decide to go that time. There were days they even ignored his presence and hurried on by—those were the days March liked the most, he was unbothered and uninterrupted—coincidentally, they were also the days he had the most trouble trying to fall asleep. Whatever.
It was a constant, something expected, he would see them walk by his forge at least once a day. They’d dance along the path—hopping, skipping—frolicking through flower petals that danced in the wind alongside them in the crisp, spring air. They’d have days where they would practically sprint by and rush their hellos to make it to the beach, and others where they’d drag their feet and loudly bark up the wrong tree about the heat in the harsh summer sun. Fallen leaves would make constant crunching sounds as they’d make sure to find and step on every damn one just to get on March’s nerves with a giant smile on their face when autumn would roll around. He did get a laugh or two in when hidden ice had made them fall as they goofed around during the winter—he'd be oh-so-kind and let them warm up by the forge for a minute before they went about their day.
Even through the seasons, this daily greeting was a constant. March hadn’t realized just how much of an impact this would have on his day-to-day schedule—or maybe he had and pushed away the thought—regardless of the true reasoning, it only donned on him when he found himself fidgeting and attempting to keep busy one day, to stay outside just a bit longer to catch sight of them, only to be graced by the lonely presence of the moon instead.
Where were they today? Not that it mattered to him. They were probably out doing God knows what, making everyone in the town love them even more. Gross. March shook his head, trying to dispel the images of the farmer that continued to pop up in his mind. He didn’t want to see them. It didn’t matter that they hadn’t come by to annoy him. It didn’t bother him.
But where in the world were they? He stepped onto the road, looking as far along the horizon as he could every which way. Had he just missed them? Maybe they snuck by him earlier, deciding that they’d leave him alone—maybe he’d just gotten so good at tuning them out that he never noticed them go by. Did they make it home alright? Whatever, it wasn’t his problem. He’d go inside and wash the day from him, relax, have a nice dinner with his brother, and get some sleep.
He thought it’d be so simple. March felt as though his night passed him by—like he was looking at it through a stack of different paintings rather than living it first-hand. He couldn’t get that damn newcomer out of his head! Every waking thought was either accompanied by their face, their voice, or events including them replaying in his head. Now he lay in bed, looking up at his ceiling as the moonlight poured through the window, unable to get his mind to stay still.
Did they go to the mines today? If they did, were they alright? Did something happen? Were they hurt? Had they exhausted themselves and passed out somewhere? Were they home? Had they eaten, washed up, tucked themselves into bed? March held his head in his hands, hoping if he squeezed it hard enough, he’d shut off his brain. It was driving him crazy! Why was he even thinking any of this—he didn’t care about them, he didn’t like them one bit! They were an annoyance, a pain in his ass, some... outsider! Why couldn’t he just go to sleep!
The break of dawn welcomed him far too quickly, dragging him out of bed without a wink of sleep. Fine, whatever. He’d see them come by today and he’d just ask what their problem was. Maybe they were just home sick yesterday; sucks for them—maybe they should get better. No, not in a caring way! March rubbed at his face, smacking his cheeks lightly to snap himself out of it. He had things to do, he was going to do them. He was going to set his mind straight, focus, and go about his own day.
Why weren’t they walking by! March held the hammer in his hand so tightly he started to shake, his teeth would shatter if he kept grinding them as hard as he was. The sun was setting and he still hadn’t seen them—not even a glimpse! He only got a fraction of his tasks done today; constantly looking over his shoulder to check if they had gone by, or standing out in the middle of the road to stare in all directions for a while to see if he could catch them coming. That makes two days now, don’t they know they were ruining his schedule? He found himself tossing and turning again that night, hardly getting any sleep as worry started to creep into his chest.
Another day, then another, and another after that. Each day that had gone by without so much as a glimpse of them had now made his chest heavy—he didn’t like it. He didn’t know why it was bothering him so much. He entertained the thought of going to their home once or twice just to check in on them—yell at them for ruining his work—but something gnawed at him each time. What if they were avoiding him?
Yeah, he wasn’t the nicest to them. He didn’t care that he wasn’t. Maybe they DID start avoiding him—that was their choice. It’d be good for him, after all! He wouldn’t have to deal with them distracting him, or... trying to be his friend. Maybe it did bother him that he wasn’t very nice to them. Maybe he did care, just a little bit.
When Friday rolled around, he ended up at the tavern early, and drinking heavy. He just wanted to rid himself of these feelings, these thoughts. If he couldn’t work as a distraction or sleep them away, maybe drinking them away would work instead. It usually didn’t take much for his head to get lighter, to shed all his worries and let himself be all smiles and laughter, but he was desperate to keep his thoughts at bay. What if they were avoiding him so much that they’d even stop showing up to tavern nights? He knocked back another drink and laid his head on the bar’s counter.
“You doing alright there, March?”
March turned so he could face the voice, closing his eyes once his cheek touched the cool counter.
“I’m FINE, Hemlock...” Was that voice coming from him? Which way was the room spinning? “Just fine...”
“I’m thinking you’ve had enough for tonight,” Hemlock shook his head and tried taking March’s half-empty glass, “but you can talk about what’s wrong if you want. No pressure.”
“Nooo,” March drew out his protest, not bothering to raise his head as he grabbed onto his glass, “don’t take that.”
“Fine, alright. It’s the last one though, alright?”
Hemlock leaned against the counter in front of him, staring at the young disheveled boy in front of him. He cocked an eyebrow, thinking for a moment before his eyes lit up in realization. Mischievously, he leaned even closer to the faux red-head and called out just loud enough for him to hear, while keeping his plan believable.
“Oh, hey (Y/n)!”
“WHERE?”
March sat straight up, unsure if the deep red creeping over his features was from being drunk, thinking about seeing them, or if all the blood rushed to his head at once from how quickly he moved. He did not last very long before laying his head back on the counter, a fist crashing down beside it.
“Spinning, spinning, should NOT have done that...”
“Ah, I had a feeling that was the root of your little problem.” Hemlock teased, once he caught his breath after laughing at the poor boy’s expense. “What issue do you have with them now?”
“No... no issue,” March had to calm his breathing. Was he flustered? Oh, no, just trying not to throw up. Wait, was he sure? “Maybe an issue. I don’t know. Why are they avoiding me?”
“Could be because you aren’t very nice to them.”
“I’m sooo super nice to them.”
“Uh-huh...” Hemlock pushed a glass of water onto the counter, trying to slowly switch out March’s two drinks. “Have you tried going to see them?”
“...I don’t want to find out it’s because they hate me.”
“Oh, so that’s the real reason.”
March lifted his head enough to peek up at the older man before turning his gaze to the hand beside him, now dragging his finger along the counter in circles to distract him.
“I don’t get it. Why haven’t they been by all week? Why... does it bother me so much in the first place?” March closed his eyes again, trying to steady the room. “I like to come here and have some fun; why am I still all upset?”
Hemlock pushed the water glass further towards March, slowly bringing his glass of beer closer to the back of the bar counter, stopping whenever March stirred slightly. It was a pity, really; Hemlock was well aware of what (Y/n) had been up to—if they were purposefully avoiding March, then they certainly never expressed it. If he remembered correctly, he questioned why they were walking so painfully slow from the tavern the other night, almost comically dragging out each step as they looked up the road behind them.
‘Should I book you for your new comedy routine?’
‘I’m just... takin’ my time, Hemlock! Nothing odd about it.’
He remembered watching as they drug their shoe against the road to make their next step, slow as a snail.
‘Uh... yup, nothing odd about it all right. Everything alright, (Y/n)?’
They had given him a sigh then, their body almost melting to the ground as they voiced their woes—too busy to make it anywhere but their farm and the tavern for some dinner at the end of the day, something about cleaning up the old place. It was almost killing them having to stay there instead of running off—or rather, running by the blacksmith.
‘Isn’t March always giving you a hard time, anyway?’ He remembered asking, putting the back of his hand on his hip and smiling—he already knew the answer.
‘That won’t stop me!’ They stood triumphantly then, stomping their foot on the ground. ‘I WILL get that boy to be my friend, whether he likes it or not!’
Hemlock remembered the shy heat that crept up their neck, touching their ears first before it reached their smile and they had to turn away from him before getting embarrassed further.
‘Besides...’ their voice was soft, he thought, ‘when you get into a routine, the withdrawals... suck.’
Hemlock was brought back to the present by March blindly dragging his drink back to him, reversing all of his hard, secret work. He sighed, a smile on his face as he gave up and picked up an empty glass to start washing it.
“Well,” he put on his wise father voice, “’when you get into a routine, the withdrawals... suck.’”
Silent hung above both men a moment before March lifted his head with a confused glare.
“Huh?”
“Huh. I thought that would’ve been much cooler than it was. Context was probably better, in hindsight.”
Both turned their attention to the opening tavern doors, a familiar figure now gracing the open room. A few others called out to them first, receiving a smile, a wave, and a short conversation in return. March sat up straight, ignoring how light headed it made him feel this time.
“(Y/N)! Heyyy!" He practically drawled out his greetings. “C’mere, c’mere!”
The heat from his blush was intermingling with the heat from being drunker than Hell, so he no longer paid it any attention. March eagerly patted the counter next to him, practically begging for them to come sit with him. If he were a dog, his tail would have wagged so intensely as the wide smile on his face mirrored theirs as they made their way over.
“Uh, hi there March! Had enough to drink already?”
“You’re here!” March let a genuine, heartfelt giggle bubble up from his chest at how light their presence alone made him feel.
“I am—oh! Okay--”
March practically threw himself against them, his head against their shoulder while they tried to hold onto the drink Hemlock has just offered them. His bottom lip jutted out, a very prominent pout, as he started to drag his finger along their extended arm now, drawing little shapes like he had done previously to the counter.
“...Where were you?” His voice grew oddly quiet. “You haven’t been by in days.”
“Well, I--” (Y/n) tried to explain. A heavy wave of guilt washed over them, a huge pang of pain shooting through their heart at how March looked up at them—sad, puppy dog eyes, his metaphorical ears and tail drooping as though he were sopping wet from the rain. They had to grip at their heart, almost comically, dramatically, throwing their head back in despair at just how evil they had been!
“I’m sorry! I had a lot of work on the farm, you know? There’s a lot of cleaning up to do there before I can think about maybe expanding my crops, or working on a barn, you know?” They stuck their lips out into a pout of their own, gently patting March’s exposed cheek with their other hand. “Didn’t mean to make you worry.”
March looked back down at their arm again, now dragging his finger up and down it, quietly mumbling, hoping that they wouldn’t be able to hear.
“Wasn’t worried...” he started, mumbling even softer, “Just... missed you.”
Though he thought it were quiet enough, a drunk person’s reality never seems to match; (Y/n) stared down at him, almost dumbstruck at how loudly he had professed his feelings—they weren’t much, but those words alone proved to (Y/n) that there really WAS some sort of fire in that frozen heart of his! Their gaze softened as they slowly turned their arm over, opening and closing their palm a few times to signal an offer.
March almost immediately, willingly, took their hand and interlaced their fingers. He kept his eyes trained on their hands, studying the way their fingers seemed to fit perfectly between his. After they gently leaned their head against his, he spoke again—a little more clearly this time.
“So... you don’t hate me?” It sounded pained.
“No, I don’t hate you in the slightest, March.”
“...You weren’t avoiding me?”
“Not at all.” They gave his hand a little squeeze. “Is that what you thought this whole time? Is that why you’re so clingy tonight?”
“...No.” March huffed, closing his eyes and turning his face away, though he doesn’t dare take his head off of their shoulder. Their soft laugh surrounded him like a soft melody, and he relished in it a moment before speaking up again. “Don’t ruin my daily schedule. Come by at least once a day.”
“Alright,” they laughed again, “Demanding, much?”
“You’re making it difficult to get my work done. To sleep. Just—come by at least once so I can see you and have a good day.”
(Y/n) nuzzled against the top of his head slightly, a smile hidden from his view as they agreed, choosing to ignore the nervous way March started to fidget, and ignoring the way butterflies flew rampantly in their stomach. With their free hand, they brought the glass of water Hemlock had been trying to push on him all night up to his lips, encouraging him to drink at least a bit.
At least for the night, tension between them had settled—whatever tension they chose to believe there was. March’s chest felt lighter, a weight lifted off his shoulders, as he basked in their glow rather than the cold, lonely moon’s, just for tonight. A goofy, genuine smile made its way up to his eyes, watching as he messed with (Y/n)’s hand and easily accepted any time they gave him water.
“You’ll forget all this tomorrow, huh?”
“Yup.” He smiled, giving their hand a squeeze and slightly cuddling further into their shoulder.
“You’ll go back to hating me tomorrow too, then?”
“As long as you remember to come by, absolutely.”

Summary: The only ghosts and demons are the ones inside his head.  Fresh from a prematurely-ended stint at an inpatient psychiatric facility, ‘former’ self-harmer and functional alcoholic Dean Winchester returns to Sioux Falls, where he works as a crime journalist. His editor, Bobby Singer, sends him back home to Lawrence to gather the story on the murder of a teen boy and the recent disappearance of another. Painful memories from growing up resurface as the missing boy turns up horrifically dead and another goes missing.  The investigation is further complicated by the town’s gossipy tight-knit nature, Dad’s judgment, and botched attempts at making inroads with his estranged half-family, Kate and Adam Milligan.  Dean crosses paths with Castiel Novak, a renegade detective from Kansas City with a troubled past of his own. As they work together, they slip past each other’s defenses, unearthing each other’s secrets and digging for the truth.  As it turns out, monsters just might be real—and they just might live at home.  A Sharp Objects-inspired AU.
Excerpt: A dumpy parking lot, leaning against Baby’s hood, looking to the stars—it reminds Dean of doing the same with the football jocks. The way he’d smuggle stolen beer cans in Dad’s jacket pocket, turning him from ‘homo’ to ‘hero’ in their eyes. Stupidly, it reminds him of Lee.  Dean sneaks a glance over at Cas’ profile, tracing the angle of his jaw as he tilts his head up. The same stupid butterflies flap in his stomach. He suffocates them with a few swigs. “So, our arrangement. I’ll answer a question for each one you answer,” Cas offers, his adam’s apple bobbing.  “Deal.”  “What was it like growing up in Lawrence?” Dean whistles. “Starting with hardballs, huh? You don’t pull any punches.”  “Would you rather I ask for your favorite color?” Cas teases.  He groans. “No, none of that grade school shit. Gimme the real scoop.” Cas raises a pointed brow. You first. “Alright, Lawrence.” He sighs, bracing himself. “Mom had… my brother when I was four.” His voice wavers slightly when he brings up Sammy.  “Adam is much younger, though, isn’t he?”  “Different brother, Kate’s my stepmom. Me and Sam, we’re our Mom’s. She died when Sam was six months old. House fire.” Cas’ eyes sadden, but he doesn’t say anything. “But, as far as growing up—normal, I guess. Went to the school district nearby, was in wrestling for a little bit. I wasn’t some prodigy but I did okay, grades-wise.” “I bet you were Mr. Popular.” Dean barks a laugh. “Uh, no. Sorta depends on who you ask.” Depends on what year. “After graduation, I left for college.” Dean skips over the rest of the highlight reel.  “And Sam?” “Hey, you gotta answer at least one question first,” Dean pokes him. “Why is a detective from Kansas City down in Lawrence?”  “My supervisor likes to send me out on solo cases for assists. I don’t exactly work well with others.”  “Well, you and I make a pretty good team—a little chaotic, maybe, but at least we ruled two suspects off your list.”  “That we did. It’s a shame you’re not a detective.” “Reporters are detectives of sorts. We both look for narrative, just in different ways.” Cas gives a thoughtful hum. “My turn again. What happened to Sam?” Dean’s throat convulses. “He died. We were in our teens.” “What happened?” “He was sick all the time. One day, he just… kept getting worse. His body couldn’t take it.” Sammy’s ghost observed them, sadly, flickering in an in-between state.  “I’m sorry, Dean.”  They sit in silence for a few moments. Panic builds in Dean’s chest, and he worries that he’s ruined whatever rapport they’d been building.  “I’ll tell you something if you swear to not tell another soul?”  Dean nods, relief settling over him. He eats secrets for breakfast.  “The real reason I work Homicide is because it’s better than what I used to do.”  “What’s so bad that working Homicide is better?” Cas looked down and didn’t answer.

Adrien stared at the ceiling, a contemplative look on his face. He’d stopped scrolling through his phone for a noticeable while, but of course his boyfriend noticed. His perfect weighted blanket boyfriend that loved to read.
Which he was at this moment, until Adrien felt him slightly lower his book, “What’s bothering you?”
Adrien pursed his lips in consideration. It was kinda a big thing to spring on someone, and he knew Jason wasn’t ready for it. He had a big heart; a heart he tried his damndest to hide from everyone.
Adrien took a deep breath, which was hard to do with a giant tank of a boyfriend laying on top of him. He turned off his phone, letting it just sit on the man’s back. The blond took a slow breath in as he played with the hair at the base of Jason’s head.
“I- those- I’m,” Adrien struggled before groaning. Adrien covered his face with the hand not on the side his boyfriend had hostage, “Kwami, this is hard.”
Before the blond realized what was happening Jason had slipped a bookmark in his book, and let the book lightly drop to the floor. Adrien let out a surprised yelp, and heard his phone thump to the floor. He’d taken a sharp breath, his eyes widened, looking into the glowing blue-green sea.
Jason adjusted the throw pillow underneath to make his back more comfortable, a small sigh through his nose looking at his boyfriend. He leaned his head forward and raised his eyebrows.
Adrien felt his cheeks heat up as Jason’s calloused hands held them and he whispered in a low voice, “Take a moment to breathe, and to think.”
Adrien swallowed, “I love you.”
Jason laughed and kissed Adrien’s forehead, “I love you too, but that’s not what you’re trying to say.”
Adrien glanced away from Jason’s lop-sided smirk, “Yeah.” Adrien’s voice was soft, like he was telling a secret, “I just…you know those kids we help.”
Jason’s smirk softened to a small smile, “Yeah.”
“You already do a lot for them-“
“We,” Jason corrected, “We help them.”
“Right,” Adrien nodded, “We do a lot to help them but I was thinking, thinking that maybe we could, and you know this is just a thought. We don’t have to do this, and I don’t want to push you to do anything you don’t want to.”
“Adrien, please just say what you’re thinking,” Jason’s voice was firm but patient.
Adrien pursed his lips and sighed, “I was thinking we could take some in? Or just one. I just think it could be something more…”
Adrien trailed off, watching Jason carefully. His face still before becoming hard as he usually did as he thought over things. Soon softened, smiling at Adrien. Jason took a hand and brushed it through his golden locks, looking thoughtful in the way when he’d already kinda had made up his mind.
“I’d love to Goldie,” his voice gruff but full of adoration. He pressed a soft kiss as he held his boyfriend.
Adrien held a large smile on his face as he held the back of Jason’s neck, “Really?”
Jason snorted, “Yes.”
Adrien gave him a peck before jumping up and calling for Plagg. Bygul turned back with a grin, “Get ready.”
Jason rolled his eyes as he got up, “Really want to be running on the roofs this early, the sun isn’t even down yet.”
“Come on, you like it when we go out early. Scares the baddies,” Bygul said before willing the bottom of his helmet to close.
“Fancy pants,” Jason murmured with no real irritation.
Bygul shook his hips, his grin ever evident through the helmet, “You’re jealous.”
Jason turned his head away to hide his amused smile while grabbing his jacket. He wasn’t jealous, just that his was more convenient.

You had heard of the White Wolf amongst the people in the village, some said that he was a monster, some said that he was a hero, but you had your own opinion for the white-haired witcher, considering that he spent most nights in your bed. You lived on the outskirts of the village as a healer with two buildings on your land, one was your house and the other was your infirmary. You met Geralt when Jaskier brought him to your infirmary for help, and while helping him, you fell for him. It was early morning when Geralt came through the door, the floorboards creaking under his weight. You were just waking up and making yourself a cup of tea when he came in. You gave him a warm smile and pulled another mug out for him, and you walked over to him as he set his bag and sword by the door. He gave a tired smile as he pulled you into his arms and placed a kiss on your lips.
“Welcome home, Wolf.” You whispered and nuzzled your nose against his and he let out a soft noise and his shoulders dropped into a relaxed stance, and his tail swooshed from side to side. You smiled softly, “Let me start you a bath.” You said as you caressed his fluffy ear softly and went to move, but his large hand on your hip stopped you.
“Only if you join me.” Geralt murmured as he kissed you again, making you smile wider.
“Of course.” You hummed as you pulled away and moved to fill a large stock pot with clean water and you placed it over the wood fire stove. It was already lit because you were making tea, and you watched Geralt as he walked to the tub in the corner and he dragged it over to be in front of the stove.
He stripped down to his under cloths, revealing his slightly fuzzy chest and you could see his cock half-hard. Once the water was in a light boil, you poured it into the steel lined tub. You filled the pot up again with more clean water and poured it into the tub to cool the boiling water off. He shucked off his cloths and sunk into the bath with a groan, and you grabbed your bucket of soaps and salves. You sat on the stool next to the tub and you grabbed a small bucket to scoop the water. You would join him after he was cleaned of the grime that built up during his days on the road.
After washing his hair, ears, tail, and cleaning the blood and grime off of his face and body. You drained the tub before starting another pot of water and once the second bath was ready, Geralt was practically tearing your clothes off, letting out soft growls as your soft skin was revealed to you. You let out a soft gasp as he lifted you into his arms and climbed into the tub. He held you in his lap as he helped you tie your hair up to keep it out of the water. He nuzzled into your neck and mouthed at your skin softly as his hands slid in between your thighs and up to cup your mound, making you moan softly.
His sharper than normal canines grazed your neck softly, “Smells so good. Missed you so much.” He growled against your skin and he caressed up to your breasts and palmed them with his warm hands.
You moaned and you reached back and tangled your fingers in his damp hair softly and tugged softly and he growled louder. He was quick to pick you up and carried you to your shared room. You gasped as he gently tossed you onto the bed that Geralt had arranged into a nest. His nose twitched as he smelled your arousal at the show of his strength and he climbed on top of you and nuzzled into your neck. His hands trailed down to your thighs and pulled them up to wrap around his waist, and you moaned as he nipped and sucked on the skin of your neck.
He reached down and stroked his throbbing cock and lined up to your drooling hole and slowly slipped inside of you. You cried out softly as he bottomed out in your weeping cunt and you could feel the base of his knot swelling a bit as he bottomed out. You moaned and your nails dug into his shoulders and you held him flush against your heaving breasts. He caught your lips in a hungry and passionate kiss and he adjusted your legs up to the crook of his elbows and pressed you into the soft mattress before he started thrusting deep and slow in and out of you. You held him close as he pressed deeper into your already full cunt, feeling his knot press against your hole. He kept up the same deep and slow pace, rutting into you with passion and vigor. You let out moans and cries as the wolf inside of him took over and his thrusts grew harder and faster.
The coil in your belly tightened and your thighs shook in his hands and they tightened, leaving bruises in your plush skin. He kissed you hungrily as you cried his name out and came on his cock, making him grunt and his knot slipped into your pulsing cunt. “Gonna breed you, ‘mega.” He groaned against your skin as his canines grazed the skin of your neck. His hind mind taking over as his knot swelled, locking you together as he painted your insides with his warm cum. “Take my pups, make you my mate.” He grunted louder as he thrusted impossibly deeper in your cunt.
After his knot went down, Geralt cleaned you two up before climbing back under the blankets. You two basked in the afterglow, with his tail wrapped around your waist as you laid on his broad chest. He rubbed your back softly with his warm hands making you let out a happy sigh and sink further into his hold. He kissed your head softly and whispered to you how much he loved you, and you whispered it back to him before drifting off to sleep, happy and safe.

[fic] drowning, and more drowning
drowning, and more drowning
Love and Deepspace | Rafayel (Qi Yu) x Main-Character!Reader | T | 2k words | ao3 link
in the previous life, maybe the next too, we're eternally together. All their lives, devotion is the only lesson that endures.
A/N: For @seraphiism 's 2024 writing event. Quote is from DNA by BTS. The heart is a fish concept is from K-Ming Chang's Bestiary.
I based some stuff on my rusty memories of Rafayel's myths stories. I don't know what I wrote, but I had fun. Divider by @/cafekitsune.
Tumblr media
in the previous life [the sea]
I.
Rafayel tasted of sea when you kissed him, that first time.
II.
Outlined by moonlight, he seemed ethereal somehow. A wraith stolen by the sea because it was lonely; retained all its earthly character except for its soil. Almost childlike with his laughter, and his surprise.
This was the first thing you had learned of the sea: its loneliness begets desire.
And this desire had given you a second life. From land to sea, the plunge into the afterlife.
Once, your elders had said that the sea was sacred because of the god that resided in it, but now, looking at this young man with pearl-smooth face, you knew that they could have never been more wrong.
The sea was sacred because its loneliness was too strong, and the desire that came out of it had given birth to this boy-god whose laughter was carefree as the turbulent waves that would drown you the moment you decided to place your life in his hands.
III.
In the days that followed, you learned what becoming a follower meant for Lemuria and her sea god.
“Being your follower is like being in love with you, when you think about it.”
Rafayel dropped the shell he was playing and whirled at you with a scandalized look.
“Why would you say it like that?” A flush bloomed across his cheeks and his ears, which was a darling contrast to his hair.
“But the way you explained it ...” You paused, struck with a thought. “I've never been in love before.”
“Oh, really?”
“Then again, I wouldn't know what being in love feels like, so who am I to say?”
“That's right.” Crossed hands, then a nod. “You wouldn't know what it feels like.”
“I suppose so.”
You turned to him. Rafayel sat across the room, surrounded by his little trinkets. This was what confused you: the weight of a Lemurian bond rested primarily on its god, the one who had more power between the two. It didn't make any sense: Rafayel having to follow your words like a dog pleasing its owner. But, perhaps, that was the point: devotion as vast and deep as the sea itself. Something enormous like this required an equilibrium. Hence: a lesson on selflessness.
You smiled at him. The blush crawled down to his neck, his chest. “In that case, should I fall in love with you?”
IV.
I will gladly give you my heart, if you wished it. This is my vow:
I will be your most—and only—devout follower, worshiping every strand of your hair, your lashes. I will scoop the sand off your footprints and keep them in small bottles. Every step you take leaves traces of sea in its wake. I will cup the lingering scent of salt in my hands, swallow it in my mouth down my throat so the sea stays within me in all its loneliness and enormity. You will be the only truth I will know, and your voice will be firebrand in my bones, eternally beating.
I will love you and only you, my water god my nacre heart, until the end of my breath, and beyond.
I will forever drown in my love for you, if you only said yes.
V.
He fell in love with you the moment you kissed him, and there came his first lesson: devotion as nothing but the willingness to drown.
maybe the next too [the sand]
i.
The desert reminded him of the sea, sometimes. Vast. Lonely. Had a habit of pulling you opposite of where you wanted to go. At times playful, at times rough, but always had a lesson to teach you.
And this lesson, Rafayel thought as he swam to the water's surface with you in his arms, was a cruel one in its stubborn unforgetting.
ii.
You tended to tilt your head slightly to the left when you're curious about something. This was the second thing Rafayel learned about you.
The first, of course, was that your heart could bring back Lemuria. The sea in all its infinity. A god's heart was powerful, after all.
The third: there was longing in your eyes that Rafayel couldn't ignore, try all that he might. This longing felt like an echo, a whisper of devotion made so long ago, uttered by a warm set of lips that almost touched his skin. It felt like fire. It felt like a brand.
It felt like drowning.
This was another thing that the desert and the sea were alike: if you strayed from your path, they would never, ever let you return.
iii.
He did not fall in love, he couldn't afford to. What was the point? He was a figurehead before he was a man, and what could be more important than a nation trying to bring back its home?
“I understand,” you said, tremulous smile captured by the moonlight pooling over you both. “I am yours, Rafayel. My heart is in your hands.”
The correct answer was to take it—your heart. It was the only way, you and he knew it. You were handing him what he needed on a silver platter. He only had to take it.
His hand twitched for your offer. Then it trembled.
Then it clenched so tightly it left indentation that would last for days.
A long, harsh exhale poured out of him.
Rafayel closed his eyes. He only prayed that he would not regret it.
iv.
“Rafayel, will you let me come with you?”
There you were, rumpled as windblown laundry, chest heaving from so much running. Too much running—just to catch up to him. Your voice cracking with each shout of his name. It was almost endearing, if not for the maw that opened inside Rafayel's ribcage.
You shouldn't be here. He had let you go and left behind the only thing that could grant his wish. It was a lesson on selflessness and he had learned it—painfully so and with great sacrifice.
But you—
You.
He wanted to laugh. He wanted to cry. He wanted to scream. Was this how drowning truly felt like?
“Rafayel, please.”
What else could his answer be? There was only one option left to take.
v.
The desert was vast and lonely, just like the sea. And still Rafayel walked on, one foot in front of the other, towards a place that could give another answer to his question.
Beside him you followed, a little tired but whole. Devoutly whole.
we’re eternally together [the vow]
1.
In one life he's a lost soul and you found him amidst the battering waves, pulled his hand up and saved him from being completely adrift.
In another you don't remember him, and it hurts but that's all right—he's going to make you fall in love with him like how he has with you, like a foolish dog devoted to its one and only owner.
After all, in the game of waiting, Rafayel has already emerged the victor.
2.
Sometimes, there's a shadow in his eyes that you glimpse in his quieter moments. But he's good at hiding it, surprisingly. If it weren't for the first time you caught it—by accident, and just in the periphery—you'd never thought that Rafayel could possess such capacity for darkness.
It saddens you somehow—that bitter slant of his gaze, the sardonic tilt of his mouth. It's most obvious when he talks about his past. Around his past, when there's something he doesn't want you to know.
There's still a lot of things you don't know about Rafayel.
But that's okay. You're patient, and Rafayel's not ready yet. You'll take whatever he'll give you—and that's enough for now.
3.
“There's a saying,” you begin, “that the human heart is a fish.”
Rafayel doesn't pause in his sketching, the scratch of pencil on paper studiously unceasing as you talk. He hums, though.
“Do Lemurians have fish hearts too?”
That makes him stop. Over the sketchbook Rafayel's eyes are twin whirlpool states of baffled and unamused. You tamp down the urge to laugh at his expression.
“If Lemurian hearts were fishes,” he finally says, “then we'd be dull as any actual fish in the sea.”
“You're being mean to your brethren.”
“Where did you hear that, by the way?”
“Oh, in another country during my last mission.” A seagull swoops closely by the window, and Rafayel goes back to his sketch. “They say that the fish-heart yearns to swim outside your mouth, so you should never, ever let it.”
“And why is that?”
“Because once it does, it will touch the air, and it will die.”
Silence. It may appear that Rafayel has stopped listening to you, but you know that's not true, because there it is again: the shadow, bracketing his narrowed eyes.
Rafayel's heart is a fish. And he can never reveal it. Because to let his heart swim out of his body means to display the most vulnerable parts of him. And for Rafayel, being vulnerable is dangerous. You may not know his whole story, but you can draw a partial image from the scattered puzzle pieces he inadvertently—or willingly—leaves behind.
At times like this, you think of the idea of devotion—the unconditional commitment of one to another, the totality of its embrace. Perhaps this is how you are—how you will be—with Rafayel, devoted hand and heart, body and soul. Maybe not now, but somewhere in your veins, in the marrow of your bones, the certainty exists. It is inevitable.
“I think mine is a fish,” you say, carefully watching him for any reaction. “So you have to promise me—that when it escapes you have to catch it, okay?”
He doesn’t say anything in return, and the strokes of his pencil are what’s left of the ensuing silence.
4.
In your dreams you've begun to learn of the sea's language.
Long, rough waves but short, playful ripples. And always—always—lilting loneliness.
In one of those dreams, you're a follower of a sea god; in another, a princess whisked away by a vagrant assassin.
But every one of them—every one of them—involves drowning in some form. You plunge into the sea to devote yourself to a god; you plunge into the desert to devote yourself to a vagabond. The sea's lonely whispers permeate, diving inside your flesh, making a home between your bones, around your heart.
At first, you did not understand its words, but through repetition, you've picked up some of them: follower, heart, drown, truth,
yes
The first complete sentence you've learned:
loneliness begets desire
The most recent:
rafayel, please
When you wake, your mouth tastes of salt and sand.
5.
Rafayel turns up at your doorstep at precisely the beginning of sunrise, sweaty and panting. His hair is a mess, bangs clinging wetly to his forehead. His clothes are disheveled, as if he's braved a thunderstorm and survived. His eyes are a little wild, manic, sleepless, but ardently luminous.
“I lost,” he says in between lungful gulps of air, “but in a way I still won.”
“Rafayel, what—”
You don't get to finish: Rafayel grabs you and slots his lips into yours.
So this is what it feels like, falling into the sea.
Rafayel kisses you like a man drowning: desperate and dying and you're his lifeline that he has to hold onto.
When he lets go, his eyes are closed and a smile teases at the corners of his mouth.
“I guess between the two of us, it's only me who's the fool.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I'm tired of waiting. Lesson learned. I lost. You won. I always lose, when it comes to you.”
The smile unfurls fully, and finally—finally—he answers the question you've asked a thousand lives ago:
“It's still a win, so yes. For you, it's an eternal yes.”
my water god my nacre heart, this is my devotion, my forever vow to you, and only you
