I’ve said there ought to be mandatory school classes on critical thinking and the wonky biases built into our brains, and lo: such a course DOES exist! Offered by @ualberta, a new Science Literacy course isn’t mandatory, but it is FREE! It’s also online and meant to be completed at the student’s own pace. 💪🏻 . From Nicole Bergot’s @edmontonjournal story (slideshow above): “The purpose of this course is to teach people about the process of science and how it is used to acquire knowledge,” course host Claire Scavuzzo, researcher in the Department of Psychology, said in a release. “By the end of the course, learners will be able to understand and use scientific evidence to challenge claims based on misinformation and engage the process of science to ask questions to build our knowledge.” . See the slideshow for details; enrolment started TODAY. . What do you think? Could it help? Are you interested? . . #criticalthinking #misinformation #scicomm #pseudoscience #misinfluencers #misinfomarketing #scienceliteracy #Beautygeeks (at Canada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSC47HILqV5/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Science literacy is a vaccine against the charlatans of the world that would exploit your ignorance.” - Neil deGrasse Tyson Knowing science facts inoculates you from those who will try to mislead you whether they are politicians who claim climate change isn’t real (we just had the warmest January since records began in 1880) or conspiracy theorists who claim the world is flat or other foolish notions. #Quote #NeilDeGrasseTyson #Science #ScienceLiteracy #STEM #ScienceFacts #ClimateChangeIsReal #TheEarthIsRound #VaccinesSaveLives https://www.instagram.com/p/B88gIlVguDb/?igshid=y6lpfi200cj2

How do we assign reading in a way that’s beneficial to learning?
Remember back to being a student in high school.  When you were given a forty page chapter to read in one night, did you actually do it?  I know I never did.  Sometimes being motivated in the beginning of the school year I would try and read the chapter, but I know I never really comprehended what I was reading because I pretty much just skimmed.  I have recently been given an assignment where I was given two types of texts to read, and then I was able to choose a text that was on the same topic to read.  I think the main take away that I got from doing that assignment was that I thoroughly enjoyed reading the article that I actually go to choose.  I really want to implement this into my future classroom, because it allows for students to get curious themselves about the topic at hand.  During the other two texts I dreaded starting them.  Even though I ended up enjoying one of them, I still didn’t have a good attitude about it when I started.  From the start of reading the text that I wanted to read, I was intrigued.  So let’s start letting students be involved in their learning process, because let’s not let them go through the struggles that we went through ourselves in high school spending two hours reading forty pages we didn’t understand.

Science literacy is growing more important by the day – particularly for advocates looking to make change in the lives of animals and the environment. But between complex, academic papers, bureaucrats and others who don’t fully explain theories or provide citations, and the world of instant-access social media, it isn’t always easy to be on the side of fact. That’s why the job of the science communicator is becoming vital – and that’s why I wanted to talk to the best science communicator I know, Dr. Anna Zakrisson (@annazakrisson). Dr. Anna’s Imaginarium is a brilliant collection of podcasts, social media groups, and videos – as well as a new business – that allows Anna to discuss all sorts of topics and issues related to science. With her PhD in biology and love of talking about science, she was the perfect person to join Defender Radio and explore what science literacy is, why social media could be making it harder to think critically, and how we can do better as advocates, content creators, scientists, and content consumers. Listen NOW at TheFurBearers.com, the iTunes store, Spotify, or anywhere you listen to podcasts! #scihard #scienceliteracy #science #wildlife #podcast #podcasts #animals #conservation #education (at Hamilton, Ontario)

Hurray for books that are full of cool surprises! When I first saw the title of Idan Ben-Barak's "Do Not Lick This Book!" (2018), I assumed it was just going to be pure, joyful silliness. And it kind of is. But IT'S ALSO A SCIENCE BOOK!! How awesome is that? Led by a bunch of cartoony microbes, and illustrated by Julian Frost with super cool (and artistically embellished) ultra-zoomed-in electron microscope photographs of everyday things, the story explores various types of microscopic critters and what they do. This one is educational AND lots of fun! ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #donotlickthisbook #donotlick #dontlickthisbook #idanbenbarak #julianfrost #linnearundgren #germs #microbes #funscience #funscienceforkids #scienceforkids #stemforkids #kidsscience #kidssciencebooks #stemkids #stemeducationforkids #stembooks #stembooksforkids #sciencebooksforkids #scienceliteracy #biologyforkids #makingsciencefun #learningthroughreading #booknerd #booknerdigan #kidsbooks #foundpictures #readingtokids https://www.instagram.com/p/B2uvT2fHllU/?igshid=x4lyk03m8bsn

This method is useful to determine gene dependencies and direction of genetic interactions. http://bit.ly/2DL4Hqj Dual gene activation and knockout screen reveals directional dependencies in genetic networks.Boettcher M, Tian R, Blau JA, Markegard E, Wagner RT, Wu D, Mo X, Biton A, Zaitlen N, Fu H, McCormick F, Kampmann M, McManus MTNature Biotechnology January 15, 2018Understanding the direction of information flow is essential for characterizing how genetic networks affect phenotypes. However, methods to find genetic interactions largely fail to reveal directional dependencies. We combine two orthogonal Cas9 proteins from Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus to carry out a dual screen in which one gene is activated while a second gene is deleted in the same cell. We analyze the quantitative effects of activation and knockout to calculate genetic interaction and directionality scores for each gene pair. Based on the results from over 100,000 perturbed gene pairs, we reconstruct a directional dependency network for human K562 leukemia cells and demonstrate how our approach allows the determination of directionality in activating genetic interactions. Our interaction network connects previously uncharacterized genes to well-studied pathways and identifies targets relevant for therapeutic intervention.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29334369 The Met‏Verified account @metmuseum MoreFresco painting from the later Byzantine period reveals much about the mobility of artistic techniques and styles. Chabad is today one of the world's best known Hasidic movements and is well known for its outreach. It is one of the largest Hasidic groups[2][3][4] and Jewish religious organizations in the world.Tanya[edit]Main article: TanyaSefer HaTanya, Shneur Zalman's magnum opus, is the first schematic treatment of Hasidic moral philosophy and its metaphysical foundations.[31] The original name of the first book is Sefer Shel Beinonim, the Book of the Intermediates. It is also known as Likutei Amarim — Collected Sayings. Sefer Shel Beinonim analyzes the inner struggle of the individual and the path to resolution. Citing the biblical verse "the matter is very near to you, in your mouth, your heart, to do",[51] the philosophy is based on the notion that the human is not inherently evil; rather, every individual has an inner conflict that is characterized with two different inclinations, the good and the bad.[52] "Chabad"[edit]According to Shneur Zalman's seminal work Tanya, the intellect consists of three interconnected processes: Chochma (wisdom), Bina (understanding), and Da'at(knowledge). While other branches of Hasidism focused primarily on the idea that "God desires the heart," Shneur Zalman argued that God also desires the mind, and that the mind is the "gateway" to the heart. With the Chabad philosophy he elevated the mind above the heart, arguing that "understanding is the mother of fear and love for God".[53] Chabad often contrasted itself with what is termed the Chagat schools of Hasidism.[54] While all schools of Hasidism have a certain focus on the emotions, Chagat saw emotions as a reaction to physical stimuli, such as dancing, singing, or beauty. Shneur Zalman, on the other hand, taught that the emotions must be led by the mind, and thus the focus of Chabad thought was to be Torah study and prayer rather than esotericism and song.[31] As a Talmudist, Shneur Zalman endeavored to place Kabbalah and Hasidism on a rational basis. In Tanya, he defines his approach as moach shalit al halev (Hebrew: "מוח שליט על הלב", "the brain ruling the heart"). An adherent of Chabad is called a Chabad Chasid (or Hasid) (Hebrew: חסיד חב"ד‎), a Lubavitcher (Yiddish: ליובאַוויטשער‎), a Chabadnik (Hebrew: חבדניק‎), or a Chabadsker (Yiddish: חבדסקער‎).[56] Chabad's adherents include both Hasidic followers, as well as non-Hasidim, who have joined Chabad synagogues and other Chabad run institutions.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chabad Breaking of the VesselsLurianic KabbalahLurianic Kabbalah is a school of kabbalah named after the Jewish rabbi who developed it: Isaac Luria (1534–1572; also known as the "ARI'zal", "Ha'ARI" or "Ha'ARI Hakadosh"). Lurianic Kabbalah gave a seminal new account of Kabbalistic thought that its followers synthesised with, and read into, the earlier Kabbalah of the Zohar that had disseminated in Medieval circles.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lurianic_Kabbalah FARO‏ @faronet 3 May 2017MoreFARO, OCE en @icomvlaanderen focussen op 15/06 voluit op regionale  samenwerking. It consists of a re-inforced concrete vertical wall and a horizontal floor rigidly connected together to test the vulnerability of buildings to earthquakes and other hazards. By means of computer controlled hydraulic actuators it is possible to expose full scale structures to loads of dynamic strong forces and control the resulting movements with high precision. The wall and the floor are designed to resist the forces, typically several MN, which are necessary to deform and seriously damage the full-scale test models of structures. The ELSA Reaction Wall is the largest facility of its kind in Europe and one of the largest in the World - only exceeded in Japan. https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/research-facility/elsa
