Sauvignon Blanc Day
Sauvignon Blanc Day is celebrated in New Zealand and other countries around the world on May 6 and it’s a day dedicated to tasting and enjoying Sauvignon Blanc wine. Restaurants and wine tasters promote the event on social media, giving out suggestions of meals that pair with the wine and other tasting tips for beginners and even experts in the wine community. HISTORY OF SAUVIGNON BLANC DAY
Wine has been a part of humanity and its traditions since ancient times. It’s estimated that the first production of wine dates back to 7000 B.C. in China. Traditionally, this drink was made from fermented grapes, which can stay up to a few years in a keg fermenting the perfect blend. There are many varieties of wine grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, and Chardonnay. However, wine can also be produced from fermented honey, starch, and other fruits, such as apples or cherries.
Not only was wine an important beverage to ancient people because of its antioxidant properties, but because water wasn’t well treated at the time, it was common for the main drink in a household to be wine. There is also religious importance to this drink. In Christianity, for example, wine is considered a symbolic representation of the blood of Christ. In the Catholic tradition, the congregation takes wine with the Host every Sunday Mass in memory of the blood and the body of Christ.
Wine tasting has also been a part of the culture for a long time. Around the fourteenth century, methods of experimentation were developed for tasters in Europe. Theories about how humans taste and smell have been useful for tasters to learn how to recognize different grapes and even regions and prices of certain wine bottles.

"Is this OK?" Spencer asked quietly, his fingers freshly entwined with mine.
I giggled. "What? You holding my hand or you taking me out for sushi for our first official date?"
His cheeks blushed crimson, a tone to match the wrapper of the chopsticks he'd been fiddling with since we sat down. "Both."
I gave him a small smile, but nodded. "It's perfect."
The waiter appeared, one menu in hand. "My apologies. It's a very busy night. This was the only menu I could find," he said, a nervous sigh settling on his tongue.
Spencer blushed even darker at this, avoiding eye contact with both me and the waiter.
After taking our drink order, the waiter left us alone once again. I stood, sliding myself into Spencer's side of the booth. "Is this OK?" I said, a giggle nearly falling from my tongue.
He simply nodded, turning his attention to the menu and away from me. His breathing became heavy as he looked over the menu, something it had been doing a lot since he finally told me he liked me.
The rest of the date went similarly to this, the two of us making awkward small talk until our food arrived, eating in a silence that was almost as awkward as the small talk, and quite frankly, an even more awkward walk around the park near my apartment.
It wasn't until the last five minutes of our walk that I finally convinced him to lace his fingers between mine again, his breath shaky at the sensation.
We continued the walk back to my apartment in silence, though this time, it was a much more comfortable silence.
"So, this is your building," he said, looking down at his shoes as he removed his hand from mine.
"Yep," I answered, popping the p a little harder than I'd meant to.
"It's a very nice building. Much nicer than my old, run-down building. I'm surprised the elevator hasn't broken down on my ride up to my apartment," he uttered, an expression on his face that announced he was being betrayed by his lips.
We both stayed silent for a beat, until he mentioned, "But you already knew that because you've visited my apartment before."
"Spencer-"
"Is it- is it hot out here or is it just me?" he asked, adjusting his scarf. "The temperature was supposed to be 65° tonight but I'm still extremely hot. Are you hot?" His eyes widened. "I-I didn't mean it like that. I mean, you are hot. Not hot but pretty. Oh, my God-"
"Spencer, will you please just shut up and kiss me goodnight?" I asked.
His cheeks went red, a maroon shade almost as red as the lipstick I wore, a color that was twice as dark as his cheeks had been earlier. "Are you sure?"
I placed both my hands on either side of his face, pulling him toward me. "Yes, I'm sure." And with that, our lips met, a sensation that not even a romance novel could ever describe.
He pulled away first, those hazel eyes expanding so wide, I wasn't sure they wouldn't reach his hairline. "I'm sorry."
I chuckled, running a hand through his hair. "Why are you sorry?"
"Ever since I realized I like you, I get this weird feeling in my stomach. It's kinda like I wanna throw up. Not in a bad way! In an exciting way. Sorta like when you're in line for a roller-coaster. Not that I've ever done that because roller-coasters scare me. Anyway, it makes my hands shake and I get all sweaty. That's gross. Anyway-"
"Spencer, what you're experiencing is called butterflies."
"What?" he asked, his brows furrowing.
"You've got butterflies in your tummy."
"Butterflies don't just appear in your stomach. That's not scientifically possi-"
"Spencer Reid, you have butterflies in your tummy. Would you like me to make them go away?"
"I don't under-"
I cut him off with another kiss, his breath hitching as my hands moved back to his face. Once again, he pulled away first, his cheeks heating up yet again.
He scratched at the base of his neck, a sheepish grin tugging at the corners of his lips. "Can you do it again? I'm not sure it fully worked."

Firestone Walker Brewing releases the "crushable" Firestone XPA. The first in a seasonal series for 2024.
Press Release Paso Robles, CA: Firestone Walker today unveiled its first of three seasonal offerings slated for 2024—the all-new Firestone XPA, a next-generation extra pale ale brewed with Southern Hemisphere hops and California style, available now in all Firestone Walker markets. Tuesday 31st January 2023
Ovation pulled into Napier sometime whilst we were asleep. Drawing back the curtains on our outside awareness panel in our stateroom, there in front of us was a frozen image of a dock at dawn; dark grey skies and pin pricks of street lights. We had arrived at last in Napier, one of our favourite places.
Napier was entirely destroyed on February 3rd 1931 and life changed for 16,000 people, of these 256 died as a result of the quake. We visited the inevitable museum that had accounts of the damage and tragedy that befell those poor people. From the personal reports it was clear that post traumatic stress was not understood at the time and how they managed to rebuild their lives goodness only knows. We could not fail to compare the story of Christchurch with Napier. Whilst the cause and outcome was almost identical, somehow Napier seems to have recovered differently from Christchurch. Christchurch showed a resilience, bouncing back so quickly by building itself back up again stronger. Napier has built a future on its past by preserving the art deco replacement buildings in the central area and successfully developing an atmosphere of that era with street furniture, costume and vintage cars It is a pleasing place and we were glad to be able to return to it. Theme park? Tourist area? Maybe, but we like it very much.
Napier is in Hawkes Bay territory, the other fine wine growing area. We thought it would be rude to leave without sampling the goods. At first we struggled to find a purveyor of wine who had any! Then we found what appeared to be a Wetherspoons lookalike and the barman said he could help us out with a Hawkes Bay Chardonnay or Rosé but not a Sauvignon Blanc! Hawkes don't grow it he said. So, we had no choice but have a large Marlborough instead! Well what can you do?
We got talking to some people in the pub who were also 'off the boat', and happened to be Australian. Well like many, they came from elsewhere originally. One, whose name is Gary, came over many years ago to live in Sydney played for Everton FC. Well there you go.
Getting 4600 people off the boat and into town, then back again is no mean feat. A two way Dunkirk operation works all day long ferrying back and forth, bus after bus. The town embraces this and provides officials to see happy and expectant matelots safely across the relatively quiet streets to spend their hard earned in the waiting retail outlets. We left behind a town full of happy Napierians counting the takings for the day. Traders are given forewarning of cruise ship arrivals and shipload of full wallets are very welcome in these towns.
Ovation (HMS Milton Keynes) finally took to the open seas at 17.15 this evening bound for Wellington, passing yet more piles of pine logs waiting to go to China and once more the pine fresh perfume fills the evening air as high as deck 14.
Still no sign of small dog at border control. Is he a myth?

It wasn't until I rolled over and felt that the other side of the bed was empty that I realized Emily wasn't there.
My heart raced with panic. What if one of the killers she's arrested has come back for revenge? I thought. Quickly, I decided I couldn't take any chances and reached over on the nightstand for my phone.
It wasn't until I had dialed up 9-1-1 that I heard soft coos coming from the baby monitor. Thank goodness I didn't press the call button. I let out a deep sigh of relief before forcing myself up from the bed and trodding off to the nursery.
A tired Emily blinked at me, her voice coated with a sleep-deprived drawl as she asked, "What are you doing awake?"
"I rolled over and you weren't there," I answered, reaching up to wipe the sleep from my eyes. "How long has it been since you slept?" I asked, noticing the purple underneath her eyes and her near inability to keep them open.
"Nearly five hours since I got a nap in but since I got a full night's sleep? Um, about three weeks. The last couple weeks of my pregnancy kicked my ass."
"Babe, three weeks?" I questioned before walking over to her, holding my arms out for the baby.
"No, it's fine, really. I have to get up and nurse her every two hours like clockwork, just like Dr. Beckett, and Dr. Reid, said. Besides, she just finished eating. All that's left is burping her."
"Then you give Lilly to me and get yourself to bed."
"But-"
"No buts, Emily. You are working so hard. I am so proud of you. I mean, your body just carried and made an entire human for ten months, you're healing from all the postpartum stuff, you've been trying to get back to work already. Thank God that JJ put an end to that idea."
I took a deep breath, sitting down on the ottoman across from her. "All those things are amazing, Em. But it doesn't make you any less of a mom if you ask for help sometimes. So please, let me take Lilly and you get to bed."
She let out a soft groan, but stood before placing Lillian in my arms and shuffling toward the door. "Please come get me if anything goes wrong."
I looked up at her with a raised brow. "Em, I love you, otherwise I wouldn't have married you, but respectfully, I will not be doing that."
She let out a soft huff but turned and headed down the hallway. I could've sworn I heard her snoring before she ever even passed the doorway.
"Come on, Miss Lillian. You think you can give me a big ol' burp, sweet girl?" I cooed, patting the baby on the back.
She was nearly a replica of Emily. She had her brown eyes, the same jet black hair Emily had before she stopped dyeing it, that same freckle on her shoulder that Emily never knew about until I told her. Lillian was just like her mother, beautiful and perfect in every way.
After about five minutes, Lillian finally burped, and just like her mother, she nearly fell asleep as soon as she was finished.
Upon reaching our bedroom, I spotted Emily, who had successfully made it back to bed, quiet puffs escaping her parted lips. I giggled at the sight before placing Lilly back into her bassinet on Emily's side of the bed, leaning down to give her a kiss on her nearly bald head.
I crawled into bed beside the sleeping lump of Emily, leaving a kiss on the exposed freckle of her shoulder. "G'night, Mama," I barely got out. "Sweet dreams."
I AM ABSOLUTELY IN LOVE WITH HOW THIS TURNED OUT, I LITERALLY CANNOT
I hope I wrote this as gender neutrally as possible. I actually imagined Emily having a sp*rm donor while writing this for some reason because I just love the idea of Emily going through lists upon lists and hating every sp*rm donor because she thinks they're all ugly (because she's a lesbian and hates men) so maybe I'll make a second part about that because I just absolutely love the idea of lesbian!Emily still wanting to be a mom and still wanting to do all the work 🥹

February 2023: Wine & Walking
Another nice wine from Vino Vito. It is 61% Semillon & 39% Sauvignon Blanc. It taste like a slightly drier Sauvignon Blanc with a nice tartness:

ESCONDIDO, CA (March 1, 2023) – Stone Brewing announces a new beer to ring in that springtime patio sippin.’ Stone Patio Magic Double IPA showcases Stone’s commitment to innovation with the use of Sauvignon Blanc grape skin extract and an experimental hop variety from Hop Breeding Company (HBC). It is now available nationwide.
Stone Patio Magic Double IPA offers an explosion of flavor and aroma with a smooth and creamy palate that makes it easy to keep enjoying, like that sunset golden hour on the back patio. Aromas of candied orange, mango and guava give way to flavors of citrus blossom honey, mango, cherry cordial, white wine and papaya. While the experience is enchanting, it’s how the brewers conjured up these flavors that’s especially magical.
Stone Patio Magic Double IPA is Stone’s first commercial release using the innovative Sauvignon Blanc grape skin extract from New Zealand called Phantasm. When making white wine, grapes are pressed off their skins. Those skins are used to develop Phantasm, as they have compounds that produce many of the desirable fruit characteristics also found in hops. In combination with certain yeasts and hops it intensifies the flavor and aroma experience.
Stone has long been committed to experimenting with unique hop varieties and supporting hop growers in their breeding programs. Stone Patio Magic Double IPA exemplifies that spirit. The beer is brewed with the experimental hop HBC 843 from Hop Breeding Company, which has orange, berry, floral and wood notes. Stone’s brewers walk the fields with breeders every harvest and give feedback on experimental varieties. They trial beers using experimental hops on Stone’s pilot brewing systems and send beer and sensory data back to the breeders, growers and vendors. While HBC 843 comes from the private company, HBC, Stone participates with similar exploration and support for public breeding companies through the Hop Research Council and Hop Quality Group.
