Please elaborate about the border patrol incident
okay so, the border patrol incident is not really that dramatic, but it is very funny to me. when i was a young 20-something, one summer a friend and i decided to go on a month-long roadtrip across the continent and back. we had a lease on an apartment that didn't start until september, shitty little service industry jobs that didn't care if we disappeared for four weeks, and absolutely no standards for like, sleeping conditions or whatever. we got a hotel or motel room every 4-5 days to shower and stuff but mostly we were living out of my 2001 toyota camry, which ran just fine but was not in the best shape aesthetically due to being pretty old and also due to young me having sub-par depth perception and occasionally backing it ungently into things. also, because we were between apartments, the vast majority of our earthly belongings were packed into the backseat and trunk of this car.
the route of the trip was pretty meandering, but some stretches of it were based on the summer tour dates of bands we liked -- one of my favorites things to experience in a new city is its small/medium music venues, so this was a great excuse for doing that. anyway, we'd started the trip by driving north to montreal and then cutting west, but instead of going over the great lakes through western ontario we headed south, crossed back into the us at sarnia and went up through michigan's upper peninsula, wisconsin, minnesota. the night before we crossed the border again, we parked the car in the massive parking lot of the walmart supercenter in bemidji to sleep, which i remember distinctly because of the paul bunyan and babe the blue ox statues looming suddenly upon us in the middle of the night as we drove into town. that's not important to the story, but i am setting the scene here, which is that leading up to this encounter my traveling companion and i had just spent several days driving through a lot of deeply rural lake country with very little human contact except each other. the plan that day was to hit a concert in winnipeg and so we awoke with the sun, availed ourselves of the bemidji walmart supercenter facilities, and headed north.
the border crossing our google maps directions took us to was the one on route 59, which is a very small and not very busy crossing. i think the border guards were quite bored. in retrospect i can see how a couple of young women in this old, stuffed-to-the-gills car with virginia plates seemed pretty strange, but also in retrospect i still maintain they didn't have to be dicks about it. they checked our passports, asked where we were from and where we were headed -- to a concert in winnipeg -- and then decided that they needed to unpack the entire car to make sure we weren't carrying anything illegal, because, they said, groupies like to bring drugs to concerts.
please recall that we had so much stuff in this car. clothes and books and food and small furniture. the tetris of packing it was both an art and a science. i was NOT happy to have it dismantled by these border men. at one point they were like, ohhh see ALCOHOL and i was like, yeah, it's in the trunk so obviously no one is getting at it while driving so who cares?? and also it's not enough to have to declare so truly who cares. by the end of this process our cache of earthly belongings was scattered around the car in the road on the canadian border, and they begrudgingly allowed us into the country, but a single other vehicle had arrived at the crossing so they told us we needed to hurry up and get out of the way.
now i was already stewing in anger over a) the characterization of us as female fans traveling to a concert as "groupies" and b) the characterization of groupies as ~obviously~ carrying drugs. no disrespect to actual groupies or to drug users, live ur lives!! but we were neither if those things in that moment and i found the generalizations very gross, so i snapped at the border guards that the car takes a lot longer to re-pack then unpack and also maybe they should consider being less sexist. they did not like this very much. i also do not think they liked my lecture about their assumptions about female music fans, but imo they deserved it. afterward when we were finally driving into the grand prairies of manitoba, my friend was like, becky...... maybe in the future consider not picking fights with the border guards considering they get to decide if we cross the border. and i was like. well. we got in didn't we lmao.
in conclusion we did make it to the show in winnipeg, where we failed to read the fine print on the parking signs and also i sliced my foot open on something in the mosh pit, turning me into a person who now will tell literally anyone at any given opportunity, "yeah, i've been to winnipeg, and all i got was a parking ticket and a flesh wound."

"Canadian Workers March, Talk But No Disorders Are Reported," Montreal Gazette. May 2, 1934. Page 1. --- (By The Canadian Press.) The iron hand of the law kept May Day disturbances to a minimum throughout Canada yesterday, with the chief development a strike of 3,000 pulp and paper mill employees at Fort Frances, Ont. The strikers walked out as a result of a lock in negotiations between two companies and their mill employees., There was no disorder. The men asked for a substantial increase in pay, a 36-hour week and an employment contract.
Many centres cancelled trouble-breeding parades. Numerous mass meetings were held last night while unemployed and others heard fiery oratory.
One thousand paraders marched through the streets of Calgary, but there was no trouble. An open air mass meeting was held at St. George's Island later.
Workers paraded to Queen's Park, Toronto, seat of the Ontario Government, and listened to speakers while heavy police guards occupied strategic positions in the vicinity.
Rouyn, Que., scene of expected trouble, was quiet. Many police had been sent to the mining centre, but no difficulty developed. Miners had been asked to drop their tools, but paid no attention to the requests.
Orators who wished to use the bandstand in London's Queen's Park ran into a snag, for the structure had been condemned some time ago dead-and civic workmen were tearing it down. Speeches were made from soap boxes. Plans for a parade at Sarnia were not carried out, although a mass meeting was held.
A couple of strangers who straggled into Stratford and tried to promote a parade were marched out by police and told not to return. The day was a peaceful one in that city. Workers at a Kitchener tanning factory went on strike for higher wagès and a closed shop, but the picketing was quiet and orderly.
In Halifax a small group of plumbers quit work and demanded a 15-cent increase in wages. Other plumbers were not affected there.
One man was arrested and fined $5 at Montreal for distributing leaflets. A demonstration scheduled to take place outside the city unemployment commission's offices failed is materialize.

Benefits of Driving Lessons In Sarnia Before Road Test
Driving is an essential skill that offers independence, convenience, and freedom. However, mastering this skill requires proper guidance and practice. In Sarnia, taking driving lessons before attempting the road test can significantly enhance a learner's chances of success. Here are some key benefits of enrolling in driving lessons in Sarnia before taking your road test.
Comprehensive Understanding of Road Rules and Regulations
One of the primary benefits of driving lessons is gaining a thorough understanding of the road rules and regulations. Professional driving instructors are well-versed in the laws specific to Ontario, ensuring that learners are aware of the latest traffic rules and guidelines. This knowledge is crucial for passing the road test and for safe driving practices in the long term.
Developing Essential Driving Skills
Driving lessons provide learners with the opportunity to develop and hone essential driving skills. These include fundamental skills such as steering, braking, and accelerating, as well as more advanced techniques like parallel parking, merging onto highways, and navigating roundabouts. Professional instructors can identify and correct any bad habits or mistakes early on, ensuring that learners are well-prepared for the road test.
Building Confidence Behind the Wheel
Confidence is key when it comes to driving. Many new drivers feel nervous or anxious about getting behind the wheel, especially when facing the prospect of a road test. Driving lessons help build confidence by providing a structured learning environment where learners can practice and improve their skills. Instructors offer constructive feedback and support, helping learners feel more at ease and self-assured.
Personalized Instruction
Driving lessons offer the advantage of personalized instruction tailored to the learner's individual needs and pace. Instructors can focus on specific areas where the learner may need extra practice or guidance, such as handling intersections or understanding road signs. This personalized approach ensures that learners receive the attention and support they need to succeed.
Tumblr media
Preparation for the Road Test
Driving lessons are designed to prepare learners specifically for the road test. Instructors are familiar with the format and requirements of the test, and they can simulate the test conditions to give learners a realistic experience. This preparation includes practicing the driving maneuvers that will be tested, understanding the test routes, and learning how to handle the pressure of the test environment. Being well-prepared can significantly increase the likelihood of passing the road test on the first attempt.
Safety Awareness
Safety is paramount when it comes to driving. Driving lessons emphasize the importance of safety on the road, teaching learners about defensive driving techniques, hazard perception, and the proper use of mirrors and signals. Understanding these aspects not only helps in passing the road test but also promotes responsible driving habits that can prevent accidents and save lives.
Cost-Effective in the Long Run
While there is an upfront cost associated with driving lessons, they can be cost-effective in the long run. Failing the road test multiple times can lead to additional fees and the need for more practice. By investing in driving lessons, learners can increase their chances of passing the test on the first try, saving time and money. Moreover, some insurance companies offer discounts to new drivers who have completed professional driving lessons, which can further offset the initial cost.
Access to Professional Expertise
Driving instructors are professionals with extensive experience and expertise in teaching new drivers. They are trained to provide clear and effective instruction, handle different learning styles, and offer valuable insights that learners might not gain from practicing with family or friends. This professional expertise ensures that learners receive high-quality education and training.
Conclusion
Taking driving lessons in Sarnia before attempting the road test offers numerous benefits that go beyond simply passing the test. It provides learners with a comprehensive understanding of road rules, essential driving skills, and the confidence needed to drive safely and responsibly. The personalized instruction, safety awareness, and professional expertise offered by driving instructors can make a significant difference in a learner's driving journey. Investing in driving lessons is a wise decision that can lead to long-term benefits, ensuring a lifetime of safe and confident driving. "HAD REVOLVER IN POSSESSION, MUST PAY FINE," Hamilton Spectator. May 20, 1943. Page 24. ---- Minor Lee Fined $150 By Magistrate Burbidge To-day ---- INCIDENT IN HOUSE ---- Minor Lee, Chinese laundryman, of 378 York street, was fined $150 and costs or three months for carrying an unregistered revolver by Magistrate H. A. Burbidge to-day, but still unexplained is his reason for pointing the weapon at a girl in a home near his laundry the other night.
His Worship voiced one theory: "The cave man used to make love with a stone hammer in one hand - perhaps it is the modern version to make love with a revolver in one hand," he suggested.
Detective Charles Boecker told the court that he was called to the York street home, the night of May 11, and found accused sitting on the arm of a chesterfield in which a man and a girl were seated. A 32 revolver was found in Lee's pocket, and five shells in another pocket, the detective said.
The complainant told the detective that Lee had entered the home -he had been there on previous occasions and took the revolver from his pocket and pointed it at her. She grappled with him, managed to take the weapon away, but he recovered it. Nothing more was done until the police arrived.
Lee said that he had found the revolver in a trunk following the death of his father a few weeks ago. It has not been registered, according to word received from the R. C.M.P. at Ottawa.
"I keep it for protection, because I have to work late at night," Lee said. Asked why he had taken the gun to the home that night, accused said: "I heard shouting in there." He was bound over for two years to keep the peace.
Convicted of being in care or control of a car while intoxicated, Alex. J. Shaver, of 105 Kensington avenue, was sentenced to 21 days in jail, to date from May 14. A reckless driving count was withdrawn.

Three Years "This is a Christian community, and sacrilege is a serious thing," His Worship commented, Imposing a term of three years in the penitentiary on Thomas Smith, 33, of 390 Bay street north [pictured]. Smith came up for sentence on a charge of stealing a large Bible from Christ's Church Cathedral recently.
"He is deserving of no leniency and this offence does not warrant any," asserted Harvey McCulloch, crown attorney. "There should be a deterrent sentence imposed to stop this sort of thing."
"My only worry was whether I should make it a reformatory sentence," His Worship said. "The lads in the reformatory should not have this type of thing imposed on them," replied them," replied Mr. McCulloch, referring to Smith. Smith's record, which dates from 1927, lists two previous penitentiary sentences.
He told the court: "I am very sorry about the way I have lived. I went into the church because I was beat with liquor."

Told by Harry Trusdale, probation officer, that work had been obtained for them. His Worship suspended sentence on vagrancy charges for Henry Falstead, 53, of Kingston; John Grech, 41, of Welland; Percy Crosby, 50, of Toronto, and George Porter, 42, of Sarnia.
[Smith was 33, married, with four kids, and was an English immigrant who came to Canada in his infancy. He had been released from Collin's Bay Penitentiary in October 1941 and had been working as a pipe-fitters helper in a factory since then. He had also been in the penitentiary in the early 1930s, and before that several times in the reformatory. He was convict #7312 this time at Kingston, and worked in the Kitchen. The Minister of Justice decided to vary his sentence to two years in September 1943, probably on appeal, and he was transferred to the Guelph Reformatory and released in early 1945.]
