Preserving the Fife and Drum Tradition With The Hurt Family at Burdette Hill After a full day at the Memphis Music and Heritage Festival in downtown Memphis, we headed down into Mississippi for the Hurt Family Picnic in the Burdett Hill community west of Sardis, one of two annual events that highlight Black fife and drum music, a pre-blues form of music that is highly endangered in the United States, really found only among two families in two Mississippi counties that we know of.

Ms. Marvel #1 (January 1977). Gerry Conway (Writer, Creator, Editor), John Buscema (Art and Storytelling), Joe Sinnott (Care and Embellishment), John Costanza (Letters), Marie Severin (Colors)
Trying to wrap my head around a book about the space industry thatâs so popular that it pays for rent on a Central Park penthouse. Maybe Tom Wolfe read this issue and it gave him some ideas: The Right Stuff comes out two years later.
Fans of New York City celebrity culture are likely familiar with Sardiâs.

Hi! Do you know how Norm Lewis got to play the Phantom? And which audios and videos of him would you recommend?
Based on this interview, I want to say a combination of good timing, connections to the right people, and giving a great audition:
âI think I just kept making a loud enough noise,â Mr. Lewis, 50, said over dinner recently at Sardiâs. âIt was like, âO.K., fine, you can play the part. Shut up!â â
The showâs director, Harold Prince dismisses the idea that casting Mr. Lewis is âin any way radical ïżœïżœ I think weâve passed that time,â he said in a phone interview. And the producer Cameron Mackintosh, speaking by phone from London, said, âWeâre not casting Norm because heâs black, but because heâs good and right for the role. That he got a shot at the role at all, though, is a sign of change for the Broadway musical....
But the idea, according to the showâs creative team, originated when the current Phantom, Hugh Panaro, decided not to renew his contract, and the showâs music supervisor, David Caddick, happened to be on a panel with Mr. Lewis at a music festival last fall. Asked by an audience member about the state of minority casting on Broadway, the actor repeated his Phantom wish. This time, at last, the wheels started turning. To land the role, Mr. Lewis still had to audition....
Mr. Lloyd Webber said that he was impressed by Mr. Lewisâs âauthorityâ in the part, and that the actorâs pairing with Ms. Boggess, an experienced Christine who will join Mr. Lewis for the first four months of his run, could make for âa very erotic night.â
Best video might be either the May 12, 2014 video of his first show (which is a two-camera shot) or the May 17, 2014 video. I think both might already be up on YouTube. Best audio might be either the July 31, 2014 audio with Sierra Boggess, or any of the February 7, 2015 audios of his last matinee and evening show (with Elizabeth Welch in the matinee and Julia Udine in the evening performance).

Wearing Memories: Sherlock Holmes-Inspired Suit
In 1974 I was a FIT student and aspiring costume designer headed to the Broadway opening night after party of Sherlock Holmes at Sardi's, but I didnât have a tux. Â Friends suggested that I attend wearing a suit covered with renderings of the character Holmes. Ethel Merman entered. With Playbill in hand I made my approach when my friend suggested that I have her sign the suit. Ms. Merman did and that was the moment that I knew there was magic in that suit. 400-plus autographs later, the suit is an epic tale of generations of legends that are the fabric of special times. Broadway and screen celebrities, Presidents, political leaders, athletes, singers, and dancers have signed the suit. Here I am with Ann Miller.

Klimt Painting Found in Museumâs Wall Is Authentic, Experts Say
A painting by Gustav Klimt that was stolen from an Italian museum almost 23 years ago â only to be found inside one of the museumâs walls last month â is authentic, an Italian prosecutor announced on Friday at a news conference.X-rays of the painting, called âPortrait of a Lady,â were key to its authentication, Jonathan Papamarenghi, a councilor in Piacenza, where the museum is, said in a telephone interview. The X-rays showed that another portrait of a woman was underneath the painting, as had been expected, he said.It had the museumâs stamp on it as well, Mr. Papamarenghi added.A team of experts led by Claudia Collina of the Institute for Cultural Heritage in Bologna verified the work, he said. The whereabouts of âPortrait of a Ladyâ has been one of the art worldâs biggest mysteries since the painting was stolen from the Ricci Oddi museum in 1997.Investigators found the paintingâs frame on the museumâs roof, leading some to believe someone had used a fishing line to hook it off the wall and pull it through an open skylight. But Salvatore Cavallaro, one of the investigators on the original case, told the BBC in an article in 2016 that could not have happened, as the skylight wasnât big enough. Two months after the robbery, it was briefly thought that the painting had been located: A package addressed to Bettino Craxi, a former Italian prime minister who had fled to Tunisia in the middle of corruption allegations, was intercepted at the border between Italy and France. But it turned out to be a recently painted fake.In 2015, someone claiming to have stolen the painting told an Italian newspaper that it would be returned on the 20th anniversary of the theft. It never arrived. Then, on Dec. 10, 2019, gardeners tidying ivy on the galleryâs walls found a metal panel that, when opened, had a bag with a painting inside. Mr. Papamarenghi said he was overjoyed that it had turned out to be the real artwork. âItâs a great, great moment for the city, and for the art community,â he said. Filippo Sardi, a spokesman for Piacenzaâs police force, said in a telephone interview that the painting would not immediately be returned to the museum as it was still needed for investigations into the crime. It would be kept in the vault of a branch of the Bank of Italy, he said.Patrizia Barbieri, Piacenzaâs mayor, said in a telephone interview that when it is eventually returned, the Council âwill do everything it can to protect the painting,â including potentially investing in a new security system. âIn the past 22 years, things have changed a lot with security systems, fortunately,â she said. The town had already been contacted by film companies and book publishers looking to adapt the story of the theft, she added. But the saga is still ongoing. The painting may be back, but who stole the painting and how? âIt remains a mystery,â Ms. Barbieri said. Read the full article

Rain, Rain, Go Away..
We have seen an abundance of rain throughout the week. I think the mud at my house is actually getting dehydrated.. NOT. With all of the rainfall North MS is under a flood watch until Sunday morning. We will see more rain on Saturday and the potential for some strong to severe stroms passing through the area, which I will talk about later. Low lying places and places with poor drainage are more at risk to see significant flooded areas. Some places across the area have seen upwards of 5 inches most places seeing between 3-4 inches. Some roads are being washed away or just leaving them with unpassable conditions. My road I live on was actually blocked off yesterday because of the water flowing across the road, and my garbage can floated away...Â
The rainfall is not the only reason we are seeing the flooding issues. Many of the rivers around the area are at, over, or near flood stages. We are seeing many of the rivers in Monroe county are in a minor flooding stage. Most rivers are predicted to keep climbing as well. Â The Tombigbee River in Bigbee is at minor flood state right now at 18ft. Flood stage starts at 14ft. It is expected to climb to 20 ft before the weekend; and it only slowly is forecasted to drop throughout the begining of next week. This is also by my house in Bigbee, so if anyone has a boat I am probably gonna need it.
Over the next few days we will continue to see fronts push though that will bring additional amounts to the area. Some places see another 4 inches almost. GFS is showing this heavy band of rain setting up from Clarksdale over towars Corinth. And it just sits over the area for the next few days dumping rain. This is possible to meander up or down though ovver today and tomorrow. Where ever it does set up it will most likely not move to much. The other models are showing that same band of heavy rain forming and sitting over similar locations at well. The NAM is setting this band up over the almost exact same area as the GFS. This is also near Sardis dam is not seeing flooding issues itself but the campground could see some flooding issues.Â
Not only does the rain pick up but so does the temperatures. There is a Stationary front that has set up just south of our area that keeps moving just south of the area. This is helping to keep our temperatures moving up and down. As the front gets closer we see warmer temperatures and as it pushes farther away our temperatures drop. Overnight our clouds stick around that is why our temperatures have only been falling to the upper 40's. As we push towards Saturday though our temperatures really start to climb. The stationary front pushes through the area warming our temperatures up and that also is helping to bring in that moisture from the west as the front pushes out.Â
As that stationary front pushes out of our area it brings a negative tilted trough and another front along with higher chances of severe weather. This severe weather pushes through Saturday evening into the late hours before Sunday. A few spotty and light showers pass through Saturday morning and then around 6PM is when the line of heavy showers barrel through. As it pushes across the state it weekens. The main risks for this system are heavy rain on top of what some have already seen, just adding to the flooded areas and straight line winds on the line of storms. The winds will be flowing out of the south so the possibility of rotation is also there with this chance of storms as well. So a chance of isolated tornadoes is possible as well.Â

Part Two â The Imposter
As the calendar rolled to 2004, Lee and I became quick friends, or so I thought. Itâs funny now, how nervous I was the first time I called her, considering the relationship we eventually developed.
With bi-weekly phone conversations, letters and e-mails abounding, one can imagine we discussed more than just Dorothyâs death - and one would be correct. Lee regaled me with tales of her lunching at Sardiâs and indulging in one too many gin and tonics; something I would quickly discover her penchant for. Â It was more than her stories which tuned me in to her alcoholism. Nonsensical, rambling voicemails about her cats, parcel with addresses written sloppily and postage affixed upside down and one particular e-mail going on about penguins were only a few instances in which her troublesome relationship with alcohol became glaringly obvious.
I vividly remember her cackling over the receiver once, detailing her failure of burning a turkey for a dinner party she was hosting.  Another time, she absolutely demanded that I read Pentimento, a book by Lillian Hellman.  She urged me to read Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs, as we had been discussing banned literature at the time.  She confided in me that she was looking to write a screenplay about Dorothy and to ïżœïżœkeep it under [my] hat.â Often times, she used antiquated phrasing â things such as something being ârotten in Denmarkâ and a âbee under oneâs bonnet.â  It didnât take me long to become quite fond of her, with all of her quirks and eccentricities.
Still, I knew something was off about Lee Israel.  I couldnât put my finger on it but something didnât feel right.  I didnât fully trust her but she was releasing crumbs of information to me that I was unable to find elsewhere.  Having sent me copies of Dorothyâs handwritten autopsy report and several police reports I had requested from her, I knew that there was more Lee had yet to share with me.  I had to keep her placated and happy in order to receive the information I wanted, despite how distrusting I was of her at the time.  She only released the bare minimum to me, afraid that I would surpass her research and become the new âQueen of the Kilgallen Storyâ â the last bit of fame Lee clung to.  I was competition, she realized.  She was not dumb; she knew I was befriending her for information and she did her best to carefully keep me at bay. It was quite the twisted relationship, in retrospect.
With those realizations, paired with my instinct, I did some late-night digging and ended up uncovering an ancient notice to all New York Public Libraries that Ms. Israel was forever banned from them.  Well, thatâs curious, I thoughtâŠ
It turns out that my somewhat-of-a-friend, confidant, theory-buddy and information provider had quite a dark secret. Â When I confronted her with what I had found, Leeâs tone turned icy.
âThat is NONE of your business,â she hissed. Â âKeep your nose out of things that arenât relevant to you,â she added. Â I was stunned at her sudden change in demeanor. In that moment, Lee was downright cold.
Funny, I thought. This woman who had written an exclusive and detailed biography about the life of a person that wasnât relevant to her was lecturing me, a person who came to her with my nose already buried in things that werenât relevant to me, on not digging into something that wasnât relevant⊠ I had struck a nerve and Lee made it obvious.  I backed off but continued to dig â shocked at what I continued to uncover.
My New York Times Bestselling Author of a âfriendâ was a pathological liar. Â Additionally, she was a thief and a felon, to boot. Â In retrospect â and having befriended another of her ilk â I recognize her behavior and traits to be quite obviously sociopathic. Â The woman gave zero shits about anyone other than herself â and her past and present actions at the time made that perfectly clear. Â
Lee had major success with the biography of Dorothy Kilgallen.  Similarly, she received tremendous praise for her biography of actress Tallulah Bankhead (who will become relevant later in this tale).  Riding high on the success of her writing, Lee began yet another biography.  Except, the subject of this one was very much alive and did not appreciate the unauthorized work.  Estée Lauder and Israel ended up in a race to the presses, with Lauder trying to beat Lee to publication with her own autobiography.
Leeâs book was an abject failure. Â She was so ashamed of it, even so many years later, that she strictly forbade me from reading it. Â (Something I complied with until many years after our falling out; finally, out of spite, I read the book and it was indeed a complete piece of trash.)
Having fallen off the high horse of success, Lee was strapped and living in an exclusive apartment on Riverside Drive in New York City. Â She was in way over her head and struggling to make ends meet. Â While she blames her felonious misadventures on the sickness of a beloved pet cat and her financial inability to afford treatment, I not-so-secretly believe that her theft was a direct reflection of her own selfish greed.
Lee sneaked documents out of the highly-secure historical reading rooms of the New York Public Library system. Â Taking letters penned by very famous people, she would gently fold them, quietly slip them into her shoe, take them home and copy their signatures. Â Her brand of forgery was especially inventive, as she used the light from an upturned television set as a back-light to trace the signatures. Using a variety of typewriters which she later admitted to trashing in various cans around the city once the FBI was onto her, she fabricated letters by famous people, forged their signatures and sold the fake letters as authentic. Â She made a ton of money. Â That is, until she was caught. Â
This was information which, at the time, really surprised me. Â I carefully suggested she monetize her story, afraid of the verbal backlash. Â After all, it was interesting, I reminded her. Â Instead of laying into me, she scoffed. Â Yet, several years before her death on Christmas Eve 2014, she published a slim memoir called âCan You Ever Forgive Me?â to much success and fanfare.Â
An aside that will make much more sense as my story progresses: I found out about Leeâs death through a google service that instantly reports to my e-mail any news featuring Dorothy Kilgallen. I was absolutely taken aback when I absentmindedly checked my e-mail on Christmas and found that headline.Â
âKeith,â I said, shocked, to my husband. âItâs over. Sheâs dead.âÂ
We high-fived and I decided in that moment, that her death was the best Christmas present I had ever received. Before you cast me as a heartless, ruthless bitch, finish my series and then revisit that moment with the information youâll receive... My joy, relief and happiness will appear far less cold-hearted and in fact, very justified...
With much retrospect, I see just how dastardly Lee Israel was.  At the time, while I was certainly entertained by her, I knew that she merely kept me around for the attention.  Lavishing me with over-the-top stories and acting as if she was wealthy beyond her means, she basked and reveled in having an audience in me.  When I had planned a trip out to New York City to sightsee Dorothyâs house and haunts, as well as to do coffee with Lee, the façade crumbled and her lies came crashing down upon her.
There were no fancy luncheons at Sardiâs. Not surprisingly, Lee had lied. Sure, there was plenty of gin but I highly doubt they were expensive martinis, as she had suggested.  Certainly, they were sad drinks from plastic, bottom-shelf bottles.  There was no turkey dinner to be burnt. Lee had no friends to invite over.
âIâm penniless,â her e-mail read. Â âIâm ashamed,â she told me.
Lying about her whereabouts during my trip (she was most definitely holed up in her embarrassingly cluttered apartment on Riverside Drive), she claimed to be in California on business. Â Convenient.
Shortly after she so transparently stood me up, I experienced a major devastation by way of the death of a beloved family member. Â Having recently moved to a new area and not yet having my feet solidly on ground in the social department, I called her hoping that in her, I could find a sympathetic ear. Â She sent me to voicemail.
Not long after I left a very upset message, quickly filling her in on my situation, I received an e-mail.
âDue to our differences, I think it is best we no longer talk.â Â
What differences? Sure, we werenât politically amicable but that was about the only thing that we didnât have in common. Â I found it curious that she would dump me as a friend while I was in such a situation â after I had been there for her, for several years, during her tough times.
I was soon to surpass her on Kilgallen research, having spent a vacation talking with a forensic pathologist mooring next to the boat I was on.  Having contacted Kerry, quick to learn that he and Lee had also had a falling out. Having received previously classified Kilgallen information from both the FBI and CIA.
I realized that she often had âfalling outsâ with people. Â Kerry and I werenât the only ones. Â One person she blacklisted was crucial in the Kilgallen case. Â His name was Ron Pataky and he was Dorothyâs secret boyfriend, seen with her on the night of her death.
âDonât ever contact him,â Lee had admonished. Â âHeâs a violent alcoholic. Â Heâs very dangerous,â she told me.
Telling me of a time that she had gone and visited him â implying quite transparently that the two had gotten drunk together â she told me that he had flipped out and scared her. No other details were given about the story but her warning was stern. Â I heeded the advice until 2011, when I was asked to be a guest on the syndicated radio program Coast to Coast. Â They wanted me to spend a segment talking about Dorothy on their annual Kennedy Assassination show and I didnât feel right about going on the air without having talked to the one man who I strongly believed killed Dorothy.
It was Lee who had tried to keep me isolated, warning me about DKâs son, Kerry and about Dorothyâs boyfriend Ron, alike.  It was Lee who made me promise to ânever put any of this on the internet,â when she sent me the autopsy and toxicology reports.  It was Lee who feared me surpassing her as the subject matter expert on Dorothy when I broke my promise, creating the most comprehensive Kilgallen website to date and it was Lee who ended up making my life a living hellâŠ
