ROSA LEE HILL (1910-1968) was from Como, Mississippi, daughter of the great Sid Hemphill. She recorded a handful of songs, the first being captured by Alan Lomax in 1959, then, by George Mitchell in 1967. Her music was firmly in the trance-inducing North Mississippi Hill Country tradition, with titles such as "Pork and Beans," "Bullying Well," "Rolled and Tumbled," and "Count the Days I'm Gone." Her niece was Jessie Mae Hemphill, whose style strongly reflected Rosa Lee's. Beautiful, lonesome, heartbreaking blues. Serdecznie zapraszamy! Vítejte! welcome! priviet! willkommen! and bienvenue! Alan Lomax and Lewis Jones' complete August 15, 1942 recordings of Sid Hemphill and his band, recorded at (or before) a picnic at the "Funky Fives" (also noted by Lomax as "Po' Whore's Kingdom"), outside of Sledge, Quitman County, Mississippi, made under the auspices of the Library of Congress' Archive of Folk Song and Fisk University. Playlist below. Multi-instrumentalist, band-leader and composer Sid Hemphill (1876-1961) was for decades the musical patriarch of the Mississippi Hill Country. He and his band — comprised of Alec "Turpentine" Askew, Will Head, and Lucius Smith; like Sid, all from Panola County, Miss. — were fixtures at dances, picnics, and frolics throughout the Delta and the Hill Country. Alan Lomax recorded Blind Sid in August 1942, near Sledge, Mississippi, where his band was appearing at a country picnic and banging out their breakdowns, marches, and square-dance tunes, as well as several blues ballads composed by Hemphill himself. By that date hundreds of commercial records had been made of the music of the Delta, and the preponderance of those were of or relating to the blues form, with guitar or piano accompaniment. Lomax's were the first made of the Hill Country's local music, and contributed to a broader perspective of black vernacular instrumentation, with their inclusion of the fiddle and banjo of the string band, the fife and drum ensemble, and the cane panpipes or "quills." Lomax recorded Sid and Lucius again in 1959.
Please visit http://bit.ly/1dB7cwe for the complete streaming audio of that session, and for more information about Alan Lomax's collections and the Alan Lomax Archive. (Lomax returned to North Mississippi once more in 1978, when he, Worth Long, and John Bishop filmed a session with Lucius and Sid's granddaughter Jessie Mae Hemphill. Rosa Lee Hill: Rolled and Tumbled (1959)
Rosa Lee Hill, guitar and vocal. Recorded by Alan Lomax in Como, Mississippi, September 25, 1959. From "Worried Now, Won't Be Worried Long," one of five albums commemorating the 50th anniversary of Lomax's "Southern Journey" field recording trip. Released in 2010 digitally by Global Jukebox (GJ 1002) and on LP by Mississippi Records (MR 058).
Hill was a daughter of the Mississippi Hill Country's composer, multi-instrumentalist, band leader, and musical patriarch Sid Hemphill. Sid taught Rosalie to play the guitar when she was six; by the time she was ten she was playing dances with him. The only two songs she recorded for Alan were marked by a desolate, keening intensity, although by all accounts she was a jolly woman. Her father died in 1961, after which, as blues researcher George Mitchell noted, most of the very musical Hemphills "just didn't feel like playing no more." Rosie hung up her guitar for a time, but by the time Mitchell visited in 1967 she was playing again, and recorded for him a barely less spry version of "Rolled and Tumbled." She died a year later.

Drug prices, what goes up must come down.
Breaking down of the cost to develop, manufacture and distrubute pharmaceuticals is a mystifying process. You would think that this would be something that’s transparent. It’s not. “public outcry ensued after a new, blockbuster drug was marketed at a seemingly exorbitant price” “ In the summer of 2015, Turing announced that the drug's price would rise from $13.50 to $750 per tablet-a 5,500% increase.” This is concerning for multiple reasons.
The drug is called Daraprim, it treats protozoal infections in AIDS and cancer patients. These medicines can be an important part of a patients care. Charging this much is similar to price gouging. Which is illegal in cases of emergency. What I want to know is why is it acceptable in the pharmacutical world? The way we have allowed these drug companies to run unchecked is unacceptable. Legislation should be put in place to stop these corporations from taking advantage of consumers. “The reality is that we have pharmaceutical companies raising prices on lifesaving drugs 5,000%. When asked about those outrageous increases, CEOs are literally laughing in front of Congress. That needs to change.”
“As part of their reports, the manufacturers would have had to provide a justification for each price increase, manufacturing and research and development costs for the qualifying drug, net profits attributable to the drug, marketing and advertising spending on the qualifying drug, and other information as deemed appropriate.” Allowing the public to be in the loop about what the increase allows consumers to be informed on what they are paying for. If the public doesn’t agree with the reasoning I believe that they have the right to use legislation to decrease the price. The cost of important drugs shouldn’t be something that we have 0 input on.

I found a recording of this song on another banjo compilation as well. This is Lucious Smith, who spent half a century playing with Sid Hemphill, picking "New Railroad". His style of playing is so archaic that it almost sounds avant garde to my dainty modern eardrums, but I love it. Meandering, rhythmic, and hypnotic.
