Best of October 2023
I had such a tough reading month, but I found some gems along the way! In a year when I’ve read some fantastic books, I’ve long considered The Right Move to be my favorite. That meant my expectations for Tomforde’s next release, Caught Up, were sky high – and it still managed to exceed them. The audiobook really took the story to another level, and I savored the reading experience over the…

MacGyver unpopular opinion potentially, but I don’t like Sarah Adler very much.
Like I don’t hate her, she’s not on Nikki level of hatred, but there’s just something about her I do not like. It’s just vibes I can’t put my finger on.

Gretchen Acorn’s fake spirit medium business is going well so when her most lucrative customer asks for her help for a friend, she agree’s to go off to the country to “help” vacate a ghost from a farm. What she doesn’t expect is to actually see that ghost, hear why he is haunting the farm, and stick around in the country for a month to try to convince the cute, young, farmer why he can not sell his farm and move to the city. It’s kind of unconventional to have your heroine be a con-woman. I’ll admit that have a fake medium business is probably on the low end of the con spectrum, but I did have a little trouble buying what she was selling. Of course, so did the young farmer, Charlie. He however because charmed by her good looks and spirit whereas I remained skeptical that a romance between the two of them would ever be believable. I’ve enjoyed Sarah Adler’s books in the past so I was somewhat surprised I was having so much trouble with Happy Medium. The redeeming character was Everett, the ghost. He was a quirky character but added some much needed humor and was a foil to Gretchen making her seem reliable and “normal”. He was a ghost with questionable morals after all. Happy Medium, for me, was just an ok story. As I mentioned, I had trouble with the main character and if I can’t love the heroine I’m not going to love the story. I’m sure there will be plenty of other readers who will adore this story, but I have to go with my gut on this one and give it a three rating. ❤️❤️❤️ I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review and it was honest! Happy Medium by Sarah Adler
Tumblr media
Thank you to Net Galley and Berkley Publishing for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Con artist Gretchen is a fake spirit medium who lives by one rule as her moral compass: She only takes on a client if she can leave them better off than when she met them. When her best client offers her $10,000 to help her bridge partner cleanse his presumably haunted goat farm so he can sell it, she can't really say no. Gretchen is surprised on her arrival that Charles "Charlie" Waybill, the bridge partner, is actually an attractive man around her age how does not believe in the supernatural whatsoever. After he kicks her out, Gretchen is even more shocked to learn that there actually is a cursed ghost haunting the farm and only she can see him. Gretchen has one month to convince Charlie not to sell the farm, or else he will meet the same cursed fate.
I was so excited for this book. The plot sounded like fun and I loved the cover. I was even more excited when I learned that it was written by Sarah Adler, who wrote one of my favorite books from last year- "Mrs. Nash's Ashes." I was hoping that this book would be just as good and it didn't disappoint.
I usually don't love morally gray characters, at least not in my romances, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the character of Gretchen. She does bad things, but she tries to not actually hurt anyone. I found myself buying into her rule and appreciating that she grappled with what she was doing. It made her journey more interesting and you appreciate where she ends up in the end.
The author has said that this book was partly inspired by flipping the relationships in the movie Ghost and I definitely felt it while reading. Gretchen is Whoopi Goldberg's character, the fake psychic medium who suddenly can talk to a ghost and has to convince someone that they're not lying this time. Instead of reconnecting lovers, the medium in this one falls in love with the one who is still alive. It was a fun take on it and I think it worked really well. I also got hints of Meg Cabot's "The Mediator" series with the way that the medium interacted with the often annoying ghost.
I also enjoyed the goat farm aspects of the book. It's not a setting that I've read before and was a good vehicle for putting things into perspective for Gretchen.
I liked the male lead Charlie. He took a while to listen to Charlie but his skepticism felt very believable. Wouldn't most of us not believe a woman claiming to be a psychic? He was clear with his intentions and expectations and communicated pretty well. I'm a sucker for good guys in books and he definitely was one.
Sarah Adler is a wonderful writer. I love her use of imagery and her wide variety of references to other media. I trust any book that she writes in the future.

January Reading Wrap-Up
Despite working every weekday that wasn't a national holiday or had school cancelled due to weather, I had a really good reading month. I don't think I'll have another one like it until school lets out. 🥴 I'm always so exhausted when I get home.
I ended 2023 with a Heartstopper novella and it prompted a reread of the comics. Then a few of my audio holds came in. I think my favorite is a tie between Mrs. Nash's Ashes by Sarah Adler and A Power Unbound by Freya Marske. Both were incredibly good in different ways. I may eventually post reviews of both of them, but we shall see.

1. This Winter by Alice Oseman
2. If You'll Have Me by Eunnie
3-7. Heartstopper vol 1-5 by Alice Oseman
8. Mrs. Nash's Ashes by Sarah Adler
9. The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon
10. My Fair Brady by Brian D. Kennedy
11. The Gentleman's Gambit by Evie Dunmore
12. A Power Unbound by Freya Marske

I don’t know what I expected from Mrs. Nash’s Ashes by Sarah Adler, but a whirlwind of tender emotions and immense heart in the form of a book I can’t put down wasn’t one of them. (Though there’s no surprise considering the world of romance with brilliant writers pouring their souls into these stories.) Still, this one is special. The novel is overflowing with wholesome junctures in every corner and the kind of love stories that’ll make the heart soar. It’s a rare treat with its intricate plot, pacing, and witty dialogue, bringing a stunning version of the grump and sunshine trope to life.
Mrs. Nash’s Ashes is a bit of a bonus with two love stories for the price of one, and while one tragically ends with heartbreak in the past, it’s still brimming with immense longing in a way that delivers what lasting adoration looks like. The story follows Millicent (Millie) Watts-Cohen traveling to Key West to reunite her elderly best friend’s ashes with the one true love of her life, the one that got away—Elsie. Travel plans go awry, and a road trip ensues, resulting in the use of every glorious trope fans of the genre could think of. Further, while readers experience Millie and Hollis’ story in real-time, we go through the events of the past through story recollections and letters, bringing Rose (Mrs. Nash) and Elsie’s romance to the forefront gorgeously.
