[ad_1] Vedanta Kalinga Lancers vs Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers at the HIL 2024-25 (PC: HIL) The Vedanta Kalinga Lancers registered their maiden victory of the Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 with a commanding 6-0 win over the table-toppers Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. Thierry Brinkman (3’, 47’), Sanjay (6’), Alexander Hendrickx (9’), Nicolas Bandurak (29’), and Boby Singh Dhami (49’) found the back of the net for the Lancers. The Lancers, who entered the match winless in three games, stunned the undefeated Tigers with a blistering start, scoring three goals in the opening six minutes. Brinkman’s opener and subsequent penalty corner win set the tone for the home side, with Hendrickx and Sanjay capitalizing early. Brinkman was instrumental again in the second and third quarters, creating opportunities and scoring his second goal in the 47th minute. Bandurak and Dhami rounded off the tally, with Dhami’s stunning tomahawk shot from the edge of the circle sealing the emphatic victory. The Lancers’ improved penalty corner conversion rate and clinical finishing impressed coach Valentin Altenburg, while Pathak highlighted the team’s defensive improvements. Amid Talk of UP BJP Rift, Yogi Adityanath Takes Charge of Assembly Bypoll Preparations
Chief Minister’s Direct Involvement In the wake of a disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha elections, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken the reins for the upcoming Assembly bypolls. With ten bypolls on the horizon due to MLAs being elected to Parliament, Adityanath is ensuring his administration is proactive in addressing constituents’ concerns and organizing effective campaigns.
Strategy and Assignments Despite no official election dates being announced, Adityanath held a meeting at his residence in Lucknow on Wednesday. Notably absent were Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, as well as senior BJP organizational leaders. Sources within the BJP explained that until dates are set, the focus remains on governance and resolving local issues, which is why only government ministers attended the meeting.
Ministers were assigned to specific constituencies to address grievances, improve booth management, and prepare for the elections. This groundwork aims to counter negative publicity through active intervention.
Internal Tensions and Statements The meeting coincided with Maurya reiterating his stance that the party organization is more significant than the government, a comment perceived as a critique of Adityanath’s management style. These remarks highlight ongoing internal tensions within the UP BJP.
Key Focus Areas The BJP is particularly focused on the Milkipur constituency, part of the Faizabad district, which they lost to the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the Lok Sabha polls. Winning this seat back is seen as crucial to recovering from the setback in Faizabad, a district that includes the significant city of Ayodhya. Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi and Minister of State for Health Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh have been tasked with securing this constituency.
Coalition Dynamics Adityanath is also coordinating with the BJP’s alliance partners, the NISHAD Party and Apna Dal (Soneylal). NISHAD Party leader Sanjay Nishad has recently voiced concerns about government actions affecting the poor, aligning with Maurya’s statements about the party’s importance. Apna Dal (S) leader Anupriya Patel’s husband, Ashish Singh Patel, participated in the meeting, underscoring the coalition’s collaborative approach. Anupriya Patel recently raised concerns about the treatment of reserved seats in government recruitment, reflecting broader worries about shifting voter bases among Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
The Seats in Play The ten Assembly seats facing bypolls are currently divided among various parties: five held by the SP, three by the BJP, and one each by the NISHAD Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). The upcoming bypolls are crucial for the BJP to strengthen its position and address internal dissent.
Conclusion As Yogi Adityanath takes a hands-on approach to the Assembly bypoll preparations, the focus is on resolving local issues, strengthening the party’s grassroots presence, and ensuring a robust strategy to regain lost ground. The collaboration between the BJP and its allies will be pivotal in navigating the political landscape and addressing voter concerns in Uttar Pradesh.

Atishi Claims BJP Switch Offer, Says These AAP Leaders To Be Arrested Soon
Four more senior leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are set to be arrested over the next two months, Delhi minister Atishi alleged today, accusing the BJP of using central agencies in its attempt to crush AAP. The ruling party, she alleged, plans to arrest her, Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, AAP MP Raghav Chadha and party MLA Durgesh Pathak.
"The BJP has approached me through someone very close. They have asked me to join the BJP and said this will save my political career. They have threatened that if I don't switch over, ED (Enforcement Directorate) will arrest me within a month," she told the media.
She said the person who approached her on behalf of the BJP had said that the ruling party had "made up its mind on crushing everyone in AAP".
"First, they put everyone in AAP's leadership in jail. Satyendra Jain, Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and now Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have been arrested. The BJP's plan is to arrest four more AAP leaders in the next two months. They will arrest me, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Durgesh Pathak and Raghav Chadha," she said.
The BJP, Ms Atishi said, had thought that the party would splinter after Arvind Kejriwal's arrest. "But after the rally in Ramlila Maidan Sunday, the BJP thinks the arrest of four leaders was not enough," she said.
The Delhi minister claimed that she had received information that ED may raid her and her relatives' homes in the coming days. "We are Arvind Kejriwal's soldiers, we won't be cowed down by BJP's threats."
Ms Atishi referred to the ED's submission in court that Mr Kejriwal had said AAP's former communication boss Vijay Nair reported to her and Mr Bharadwaj.
"This information is already in ED's and CBI's chargesheets. It is possible that ED took our names so that they proceed on arresting the second line of AAP leadership," she said.
The BJP described the AAP leader's allegations as "baseless". Party leader RP Singh said, "I too can say that Saurabh Bharadwaj called me up and requested me to protect them from Arvind Kejriwal who wants to put them behind bars and make Sunita Kejriwal the Chief Minister. This is their internal tussle, which is coming out again and again in different forms."
"The truth is that action will be taken against all whose names are involved in the matter. It is clear that the fight for the CM post has begun in AAP. Saurabh Bharadwaj and Atishi are on one side and Sunita Kejriwal and Arvind Kejriwal are on the other," he alleged, according to news agency ANI.
Ms Atishi's allegations and the BJP's counter are the latest in the heated exchanges between AAP and BJP leaders in the wake of Mr Kejriwal's arrest in a money laundering related to Delhi's now-scrapped liquor policy. The Chief Minister has been remanded in judicial custody till April 15 and moved to Delhi's Tihar jail. The ED has said he is not cooperating in the probe.

Congress Faces Another Blow: BJP Labels AAP's Delhi Seat Offer as Yet Another 'No-Confidence Motion
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has characterized the recent offer from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Congress for a single Lok Sabha seat in Delhi as another blow to the already beleaguered party. BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla declared that this move signifies another “no-confidence motion” against the Congress by its own allies.
Poonawalla highlighted recent incidents where other political entities had seemingly snubbed the Congress. He mentioned Mamata Banerjee’s offer of just two seats, Akhilesh Yadav’s allocation of seats in Uttar Pradesh, and Sanjay Raut’s assertion that the Congress should start from zero in Maharashtra. Poonawalla argued that these instances demonstrate a lack of confidence in the Congress among its alliance partners, transforming the coalition into an effort to diminish the party’s influence rather than challenging the ruling BJP.
Asserting that the alliance partners’ lack of confidence stems from the diminishing appeal of the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, Poonawalla declared, “It is not an alliance of ‘Modi Hatao’ but an alliance of ‘Congress ko ghatao’ (diminish Congress).” He suggested that the Congress should be given around 200 seats or less nationwide, attributing the emergence of regional parties to a gradual erosion of the Congress’ voter base.
Poonawalla cited the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) rise to power in Delhi as an example of how regional parties have eclipsed the Congress. He argued that the AAP gained prominence by superseding the Congress in both Delhi and Punjab, emphasizing their reluctance to revive a diminishing political force.
Taking a swipe at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Poonawalla remarked on the perceived decline in support for the party since the initiation of Rahul Gandhi’s “Nyay Yatra.” He listed instances where leaders like Mayawati, Mamata Banerjee, Milind Deora, and Ashok Chavan expressed dissatisfaction or distanced themselves from the Congress. Poonawalla predicted a widespread rejection of such alliances by the public.
Earlier, AAP MP Sandeep Pathak had offered the Congress one seat in Delhi, acknowledging the Congress party’s limited electoral success in the region. While the AAP plans to contest the remaining six seats, the gesture was made in the spirit of alliance and respect for the Congress party.

Despite trailing to a first-quarter goal from Enrique Gonzalez (13`), the UP Rudras secured a superb comeback win thanks to goals from Kane Russell (45`, 60`) and Sudeep Chirmako (50`). It was the UP Rudras who set the tempo early in the first quarter with captain Hardik Singh dictating play from the heart of midfield. Though they had more circle penetrations than the Kalinga Lancers, the UP Rudras forward line did not test Krishan Bahadur Pathak in goal. The Vedanta Kalinga Lancers finally found their rhythm midway through the quarter with English forward Nicolas Bandurak proving to be a menace for the UP Rudras defence with Arthur van Doren also having a crack at goal. The Kalinga Lancers duly took the lead in the 13th minute with a clinical move down the right flank. Sanjay made a run down the right channel and found the young Boby Singh Dhami on the goalline. Dhami threaded the Rudras defence to find Enrique Gonzalez who gave his side the lead with a first-time finish. The Kalinga Lancers could have gone into the second quarter with a three-goal lead but for some good goalkeeping by Mazarelo. The English goalkeeper first kept out Alexander Hendrickx’s drag-flick before saving follow up attempts from Partap Lakra and Thierry Brinkman. Mazarelo was a busy man in the start of the second quarter as well, with the Kalinga Lancers regularly finding ways to get inside the UP Rudras circle. The UP Rudras were static in attack as they failed to create decent chances in front of goal. On top of that, they were up against a Kalinga Lancers defence which was proving difficult to break down. Particularly impressive was 21-year-old Rosan Kujur who was playing in front of his home fans. The Kalinga Lancers were the dominant side in the first half as they racked up 13 circle penetrations compared to six from the UP Rudras. Crucially for the Rudras, Mazarelo made five saves in the first half to keep them alive in the match. The Englishman continued to keep his side in the game in the third quarter as he pulled off a diving save to deny Boby Singh Dhami a stunning goal in the 33rd minute. The UP Rudras attack finally began to click. In the 38th minute, Akashdeep Singh, who found himself in a promising position in the circle, only had Krishan Bahadur Pathak to beat but saw his shot being blocked at point-blank range by Sanjay. Pathak was tested a minute later when Lars Balk’s pass from deep was delightfully deflected towards goal by Manmeet Singh. Pathak instinctively flung himself to his right to ensure his side kept their lead. Pathak made another good save two minutes from the end of the third quarter to deny Tanguy Cousyns. The UP Rudras had a golden opportunity to draw themselves level in the 44th minute as they won their first penalty corner. Kane Russell made no mistake as he fired in his drag flick past Pathak to set up a nail-biting final quarter. The goal proved to be the wind in the UP Rudras’s sails as they started the fourth quarter on the front foot. The Rudras won possession high up the pitch with Sudeep Chirmako forcing Pathak to give away a penalty corner. The Lancers’ captain was not going to be beaten for a second time from a penalty corner as he dove to his left to keep out the drag attempt. The Rudras completed an incredible turnaround in the 50th minute to take the lead for the first time in the match. Lars Balk’s drive from outside the circle was touched towards goal by Sudeep Chirmako. Gurjot Singh challenged
Pathak for the shot but neither player was able to get a touch as the ball rolled into the goal. The home crowd was stunned into silence. The Lancers upped their tempo looking to the equaliser but struggled to find a way past the impervious Mazarelo. The Netherlands’ 2024 Olympics gold medallist Thierry Brinkman found himself in a promising position in the 54th minute only to see his attempt being smothered by Mazarelo. The Lancers threw the kitchen sink in their hunt for an equaliser as they removed goalkeeper Pathak for an extra outfield player for the final three minutes. However, it was the UP Rudras who came closest to scoring as Jobanpreet Singh failed to connect with a cross from the right with the goal gaping in front of him. The Rudras did get their third goal late as Lalit Kumar Upadhyay won a penalty corner with 14 seconds left on the clock. With no goalkeeper between the sticks and only four defenders to beat, Kane Russell secured his second of the night to give his side victory. Player of the Match James Mazarelo said, “It is a massive win just to show that we know that even if we’re down in the game, we’re always in the match and then we can back ourselves to go and score multiple goals.” Delhi SG Pipers will play Hyderabad Toofans on December 31 at 8:15 PM IST.
