A 2021 study by the University of Michigan in the US found that scavenging hyenas provide significant health and economic benefits to the African cities they roam. Spotted hyenas collectively remove 207 tonnes (456,000lb) of animal carcass waste annually in Mekelle, the capital of northern Ethiopia's Tigray region, the researchers calculated. The hyenas feed on livestock carcasses dumped in landfill sites on the outskirts of Mekelle. The researchers wanted to understand whether by devouring these carcasses, hyenas helped prevent pathogens from spreading to people and livestock. They compared the public health and economic outcomes of times when hyenas were present to when they were absent, and found that their scavenging annually prevented five infections of anthrax and bovine tuberculosis (TB) in Mekelle's residents and 140 infections in cattle, sheep and goats. "We found that hyenas are contributing to the management of disease and controlling the spread as well," says Chinmay Sonawane, lead author of the study who is currently completing a PhD in biology at Stanford University in California. Anthrax and bovine TB are responsible for about 6,000 human deaths and 500,000 cattle deaths annually in Ethiopia, the study authors note. "These are just two diseases out of dozens, if not hundreds, that might be out there," says Sonawane. "The sanitation services provided by hyenas might also be preventing the transfer of novel diseases to people." The hyenas' scavenging also saved Mekelle $52,000 (£44,000) annually in health treatment costs and livestock losses avoided, the study found. "There are really big economic benefits for the local community," says Sonawane. People living in villages around Mekelle therefore "reap the benefits" of having hyenas around, he says. Communities on the fringes of Ethiopian cities "have coexisted with hyenas for as long as they've both been present, and certainly understand the sanitation services they provide", says Sonawane. "But that additional step of disease control might not be as tangible for them."

An industrial cleaning company accused by federal investigators of hiring dozens of children to clean slaughterhouses during the graveyard shift has resolved the allegations with the U.S. Department of Labor, according to a federal court filing filed Tuesday morning.

As part of the consent order, Packers Sanitation Services Inc., or PSSI, will review and enhance its existing policies and training materials and hire a third-party consultant to conduct “quarterly child labor compliance training” and monitor the company’s compliance for three years. The company will also provide a new child labor provision in its contracts with clients and will notify the Labor Department as to how many employees it terminated as a result of its compliance with child labor laws.

Allegations of child labor at a slaughterhouse in Grand Island, Nebraska, date back to 2016, according to a previously unreported local police report obtained by NBC News. The report stated that an officer was called to the local middle school because a 14-year-old girl had “injuries to her hands.” The document shows that the allegations were investigated as “child abuse.”

The resolution comes about a month after the Department of Labor accused the company of employing at least 31 children on graveyard shifts in slaughterhouses in three states, where they were tasked with cleaning the killing floors and various machines — including meat and bone cutting saws and a grinding machine — according to the complaint, which noted that several children began their shifts at the facilities at 11 p.m. and worked until 5, 6 or 7 a.m, with some working up to six or seven days a week. At least three chiildren suffered chemical burns as a result of working in the slaughterhouses, according to that complaint.

According to court documents, the Labor Department identified as of Monday another 19 minors who PSSI employed at two additional facilities since last month’s filing, bringing the total number of minors who have worked for the company to at least 50 at five plants in three states.

In their complaint filed last month, federal officials said initial evidence indicates the company may also employ more children under similar conditions at 400 other sites across the country.

The company is owned by the private equity firm Blackstone, which took it over in 2018.

Decided to put some rimmed sheet pans on my fire escape last night to see how much water collected from last night’s storm. Four pans + 12 hours of intermittent rain = 9 cups of water

I’m not sure how to parse this information or if it’s worth tracking this further. At the very least I can say I took the tiniest bit of pressure off the sewer system. But I do have very nice rainwater for my trees’ breakfast this morning so hopefully they like it.

But also if someone really is going to decide to do absolutely nothing with their life despite being thrown a rope on multiple ocassions i would still rather they do that nothing in a clean and safe home. If someone is going to neglect their own physical and emotional wellbeing i would still rather they recieve the same standard of care as someone who doesnt.

Because i dont know if we can ~save~ everyone so to speak. As in i dont know if we can fix all those wrongs in a persons life that have lead to that point. Preventing them from happening to begin with feels less daunting than confronting the baggage thats mounted up over years. A chunk of that is at the end of the day down to them.
