In Nighthawks, how old were they both when Tua and Nick first met? What were their first impressions? Are both of them from San Francisco or did either move there? What does Tua like to do for themselves, whether that is for self care or a hobby of some sort? Sorry I hope these weren't too many!
my friend this is the perfect number of questions.
nighthawks is broken up into two acts, with the first one occurring when they first met (1966) and the second occurring when they cross paths again (1975). they're in their mid-thirties when they meet each other - nick is a courthouse security guard, and tua has recently moved from boston and is working part-time as a notary. she is frequently at the county clerk's office for this reason so they see each other a lot. nick thinks tua is mysterious and beautiful and tua is charmed by how old-fashioned he is (like how he didn't make her walk through security bc she's pregnant, insists that his coworker take his hat off in their presence, etc). tua is still sort of sore from what happened with their ex and is grappling with dysphoria so nothing really happens between them - but there is def a spark lol. in the second act (when nick is working as a night watchman and tua as a legal secretary) they get into more antics.
much like webh tua was born and raised in new york, and prior to moving to sf tua had been living in massachusetts and working as a legal secretary for the federal pd office in boston. right before nighthawks starts she gets let go when they needed time off for their surprise baby. so she moves to east bay to be closer to their sister and her sister's partner, yasmin (yaya). at the time, tua and miriam's mother had recently passed away (who tua had not seen since she was a child), so tua moves into their mom's old house, and it's where she's still living at the start of the second act. nick isn't from sf originally either - he grew up in chicago and was the youngest with four sisters. what he tells people is that he moved in his early twenties to the bay area for better access to medical care and never cared to leave. in reality he doesn't go back to chicago often bc his family isn't really receptive to his transition, though he's still pretty close with his younger sisters.
this is kind of a deep cut, but tua loves fishing!! they often take weekend trips out of the bay, and will drive considerable distances to get somewhere quiet and remote. they also love swimming - especially at night lol.

Has any president ever not been given the oath of office by the chief justice of the supreme court
Yes. The Constitution does not specify who must administer the oath of office to the President and government officials who are required to swear (or affirm) an oath can essentially be sworn in by any federal or state judge or even a notary public.
The oath of office has been administered eight times by someone other than the Chief Justice of the United States -- usually when a Vice President has assumed office upon a President's death and it was necessary to quickly locate somebody who could administer the oath. George Washington was also sworn in by someone other than the Chief Justice at both of his inaugurations. In fact, not only was there no Chief Justice at the time of Washington's first inauguration but there was literally no federal judiciary (and, obviously, no federal judges). The Judiciary Act establishing the Supreme Court wasn't enacted until September 1789 -- almost five months into President Washington's first term -- and that's when the first members of the Supreme Court were nominated and confirmed.
Of course, the Chief Justice of the United States has been the person swearing in the President the vast majority of the time. John Marshall, the longest-serving Chief Justice in American history (1801-1835), administered the oath of office more times than anyone else -- nine times to five different Presidents. However, Chief Justice Roger B. Taney (served from 1836-1864) administered the oath to more individual Presidents than anyone else -- seven times to seven different Presidents. The nation's first two Chief Justices -- John Jay (1789-1795) and John Rutledge (August-December 1795) -- are the only two Chiefs who never administered the oath to a President.
Here is the list of Presidential Inaugurations not conducted by the Chief Justice of the United States along with the person who administered the oath of office: •GEORGE WASHINGTON's 1st Inauguration (April 30, 1789): Robert Livingston, Chancellor of New York (The Chancellor of New York was the presiding judge of the New York Court of Chancery, the highest court in New York State from 1701-1847) •GEORGE WASHINGTON's 2nd Inauguration (March 4, 1793): William Cushing, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court •JOHN TYLER's Inauguration (April 4, 1841): William Cranch, Chief Judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of the District of Columbia (Tyler assumed office upon the death of President William Henry Harrison. Interestingly, Cranch was the nephew of John and Abigail Adams.) •MILLARD FILLMORE's Inauguration (July 9, 1850): William Cranch, Chief Judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of the District of Columbia (Fillmore assumed office upon the death of President Taylor.) •CHESTER A. ARTHUR's Inauguration (September 20, 1881): John R. Brady, Justice of the New York State Supreme Court (Arthur assumed office upon the death of President Garfield. Brady was the first judge that could be tracked down to administer the oath at Arthur's home in New York City after notification of Garfield's death arrived shortly after midnight on Sept. 20, 1881. After returning to Washington, D.C. on September 22, 1881, Arthur was administered the oath of office again in a formal ceremony by Chief Justice Morrison Waite.) •THEODORE ROOSEVELT's 1st Inauguration (September 14, 1901): John R. Hazel, Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York (Roosevelt assumed office upon the death of President McKinley.) •CALVIN COOLIDGE's 1st Inauguration (August 3, 1923): John Calvin Coolidge Sr., Justice of the Peace and Notary Public in Plymouth, Vermont (Coolidge assumed office upon the death of President Harding. Coolidge was staying at his father's home in Vermont when he was notified shortly after midnight on August 3, 1923 that President Harding had died a few hours earlier in San Francisco. Since Coolidge's father was a Notary Public, he administered the oath of office to his son in the sitting room of the family home. After being sworn in by his father, President Coolidge promptly went back to sleep.) •LYNDON B. JOHNSON's 1st Inauguration (November 22, 1963): Sarah T. Hughes, Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas (Johnson assumed office upon the death of President Kennedy. Johnson was in Dallas with Kennedy when the President was assassinated, and he was sworn in as President aboard Air Force One on the airport tarmac of Love Field before leaving Texas to return to Washington with Kennedy's body.)

What period of history do you enjoy learning about? I really love learning about local history within the lifetime and memory of people who live around me! There's something very inherently rad about it. The sort of vernacular and quotidian stuff that would get forgotten but gets passed down, orally, at parties and bonfires.
But truly literally any span of history where I can read about people's daily lives (@that-banhus the kidney stones!—was it kidney stones?) and be suddenly fastened to them across the time and space, by our commonalities, and by the little idiosyncracies that make the imagining of a person come to life. Personals in a San Francisco gay newspaper from 1975. A sixteenth century Selkirk notary's records. Writing that's not meant to be writing, that wasn't written to be read decades or centuries later, but is.
(tea and book asks)
#asks#about me#tea and books#i have failed to answer this question#more type than period hahaha - but i'm not a historian#it's like asking your fave period of classic music#and i'm like#'well i sure do love the songs that stir my heart'#sorry i'm so cheerfully useless and easily pleased anon lmao

California Notary Fees: A Comparison Guide, Company Name: KMs Mobile Notary Service, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the fees associated with notary services in California. As an essential part of the legal system, notaries play a crucial role in verifying and certifying important documents. However, the fees charged by notary services can vary significantly, making it essential for individuals and businesses to understand the factors that affect these fees and how they can make informed decisions when selecting a notary service. This article explores the various factors influencing notary fees, compares the fee structures of KMs Mobile Notary Service with others in the industry, delves into additional services and costs, offers tips for choosing a notary service, and provides an understanding of the legal framework surrounding notary fees in California. By the end, readers will be equipped with the knowledge needed to navigate the world of notary fees in California confidently.
The Role of Notaries in California
Notaries play a crucial role in California, ensuring the authenticity and legality of important documents and transactions. From notarizing loan documents to verifying signatures on legal contracts, notaries act as impartial witnesses to prevent fraud and maintain the integrity of important paperwork.
Importance of Understanding Notary Fees
When utilizing the services of a notary in California, it's essential to understand the associated costs. Notary fees can vary depending on several factors, including location, document complexity, and the time required. By understanding the fee structures and different options available, you can make informed decisions and avoid any surprises when seeking notarial services.
Factors Affecting Notary Fees in California
Regional Variations in Notary Fees
Notary fees in California can vary from county to county. This means that the cost of notarizing a document in Los Angeles might be different from the cost in San Francisco. Regional variations are influenced by factors like the local economy, market demand, and the prevailing cost of living. It's essential to consider these differences when budgeting for notary services.
Complexity and Type of Document
The complexity and type of document being notarized can impact the fees charged. Some documents require more extensive verification processes or additional certifications, which may result in higher fees. For example, notarizing a simple affidavit might have a different cost compared to notarizing a mortgage agreement. Always provide accurate details about your document to obtain an accurate quote.
Time and Travel Considerations
Notaries who provide mobile services might charge additional fees for their time and travel. If you require a notary to come to your location, it's essential to discuss any travel fees upfront. Time considerations can also impact the fees, especially if you need urgent or after-hours services. These factors should be taken into account when estimating the overall cost of notary services in California.
California Notary Fee Comparison: KMs Mobile Notary Service
As a leading provider of mobile notary services in California, KMs Mobile Notary Service strives to offer competitive and transparent pricing. With a commitment to convenience and exceptional customer service, KMs Mobile Notary Service ensures that notary fees are fair and reasonable for their clients. Contact us today for a personalized quote tailored to your specific needs.
Exploring Notary Fee Structures in California
Flat Fee Structure
Some notaries in California charge a flat fee for their services, regardless of the document type or complexity. This pricing model simplifies the fee calculation process and provides transparency to clients. Whether you're notarizing a simple power of attorney or a complex estate planning document, a flat fee structure can be a straightforward and predictable option.
Fee per Signature
Another common fee structure in California is based on the number of signatures that require notarization. With this approach, each signature is assessed a specific fee. This fee structure can be advantageous for simple documents with minimal signatures, as clients only pay for the notarization required.
Fee per Document
Certain notaries may charge a fee per document instead of basing it on signatures. This fee structure can be beneficial for clients who have multiple documents that need notarization but do not require notarization of every signature on each document. It provides flexibility and potentially cost-saving options for individuals and businesses seeking notary services. Remember, when selecting a notary service in California, it's crucial to consider factors such as reputation, reliability, and quality of service alongside the fee structure. Find a notary who offers competitive pricing without compromising on professionalism and expertise.

Tips for Choosing a Notary Service in California
Researching Notary Services
When it comes to choosing a notary service in California, it's important to do your homework. Take the time to research different providers, read reviews, and gather information about their expertise and level of professionalism. A little bit of research can go a long way in ensuring a smooth and satisfactory notarization experience?
Comparing Fees and Services
While price shouldn't be the only factor in your decision, it's important to compare fees and services offered by different notary services. Look for transparent pricing structures and make sure there are no hidden costs that might catch you off guard. Balance affordability with the quality of service provided to find the best value for your money.
Considering Customer Reviews and Referrals
Customer reviews and referrals can offer valuable insights into the reliability and professionalism of a notary service. Pay attention to what others are saying about their experiences. Positive reviews and personal recommendations go a long way in giving you confidence in your choice.
Understanding the Legal Framework of Notary Fees in California
Notary Fee Regulations in California
In California, notary fees are regulated by the state government. The fees charged must adhere to the guidelines set forth by the California Secretary of State. These regulations ensure that notary fees remain fair and reasonable across the state.
Maximum Allowable Notary Fees
While notaries in California have the freedom to set their own fees within the state's guidelines, there are maximum allowable fees for various notarial acts. It's important to familiarize yourself with these fee limits to avoid overpaying for notary services.
Avoiding Excessive Fees or Fee Gouging
Unfortunately, there are instances where notary fees go beyond what is considered reasonable. To avoid excessive fees or fee gouging, it's crucial to be informed about the legal framework of notary fees in California. By understanding the regulations and maximum allowable fees, you can protect yourself from unfair pricing practices.
Conclusion: Making Informed Decisions Regarding Notary Fees in California
When it comes to notary services in California, it's important to make informed decisions. Consider factors such as convenience, additional services offered, and customer reviews. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the legal framework of notary fees in the state to ensure you're not overcharged. By taking these steps, you can find a reliable notary service that meets your needs without breaking the bank. And remember, at KMs Mobile Notary Service, we're here to make your notarization experience as easy and pleasant as possible!
Understanding California notary fees is crucial for individuals and businesses alike. D.O.A. and film noir: Right there in the face.
After watching and enjoying Black Angel, I was more than ready to view the D.O.A.(1950). D.O.A, released by United Artists, was directed by Rudolph Maté and starred Edmond O’Brien and Pamela Britton as the leads. The film follows O’Brien as Frank Bigelow, an accountant and notary public in California. Becoming restless and hesitant about his relationship with his secretary, Paula, played by Pamela Britton, he decides to take an impromptu trip to San Francisco. As he is trying to relax and enjoy his vacation, he begins to feel unwell and heads to the doctor. Upon discovering he has been poisoned and only has a few days left to live, he takes it upon himself to discover who “murdered” him before it’s too late.
“This wartime and immediate postwar detective contrasts markedly with today’s conformist home-front detectives.” (Broe). This quote comes from the journal article Class, Labor, and the Home-Front Detective: Hammett, Chandler, Woolrich, and the Dissident Lawman(and Woman) in 1940s Hollywood and Beyond by Dennis Broe. I couldn’t agree more with this quote, especially given what I have watched this week. In both the Black Angel and D.O.A., there is no detective at all. There are police involved in both, but they play minor roles. The main characters who take it upon themselves to solve the mysteries in these films aren’t detectives, not even close. One is an accountant and notary public, while the other two are an alcoholic musician and a former singer turned housewife. In both films, the main characters are in situations where the police can’t do anything more or they feel as though they have to take it upon themselves. Both situations end with the case being solved, but a sadness and darkness to it all. They wrap up loose ends, but there are no true happy endings. Which makes perfect sense for film noir.
After watching the Black Angel, I had high expectations. For the most part, those expectations were met. The quality of the film was great. The lighting was different, less soft lighting than Black Angel, as this was a grittier film and the lighting reflected that. The score also reflected that feeling, with its darker and jarring sound. Editing and the rest were all quite good. The acting was a bit more dramatic at times, especially during a confrontation or an embrace with a woman, but it also spoke of the time period. The plot was intriguing and not entirely what I expected. While I managed to figure some things out, there were a few times where a new twist and turn would take me by surprise. There were also things that were right there in my face, but I just didn’t see it until the end. But hey, now I know what D.O.A stands for. The ending was satisfying yet left me wanting a little more, though that’s what made it so good.
Both films were excellent and I am glad I watched them. For all my expectations about crime noir films of the 40s, I was pleasantly surprised at the change of pace these films brought. I would say, if I had to pick between the two, I would choose Black Angel. While I did enjoy the D.O.A., Black Angel just had a little something more for me. Between the lighting, the music, the plot, not between the romance. While both films have ill-fated romances, the chemistry between the two main characters of Black Angel was just perfection. While I can find romance cheesy at times, I can be a sucker for it as well. Overall, just two spectacular films that I would highly recommend.
