She Stalked Her Daughter's Killers Across Mexico, One by One
Tumblr media
Armed with a handgun, a fake ID card and disguises, Miriam Rodriguez was a one-woman detective squad, defying a system where criminal impunity often prevails.

Miriam Rodriguez, a professional nanny in McAllen, Texas, had received a phone call from her daughter, Azalea, who informed her that something terrible had happened to Karen, her youngest daughter. Devastated, Miriam had quickly packed her belongings, left a note for the family she was working for, and crossed the border to Mexico, where she was born. Karen had been kidnapped by Mexico's Zeta Cartel. Her mother would stop at nothing to find out exactly what happened to her.
Tumblr media
She had been shot 12 times.

For many in the northern city of San Fernando, her story represents so much of what is wrong in Mexico - and so remarkable about its people, their perseverance in the face of government indifference.
Tumblr media
The country is so torn apart by violence and impunity that a grieving mother had to solve the disappearance of her daughter largely on her own, and died violently because of it.
Along with finding her daughter's killers, she made efforts to help other parents whose children had disappeared, and from it came the Colectivo de Desaparecidos (The Vanished Collective) organization.

What a pleasure to come across "The Lost Tapes" - a collection of demos that chronicle the only output of the band Mad Anthony. Read the entire write-up on Bandcamp to get all the details - but essentially Mad Anthony member John Schwab's son, Ben, (himself a member of Drugdealer and Sylvie) convinced his Dad and other members to let these recordings be heard publicly 40 years after they were made.
The songs sound like the bands they covered when they started out in Ohio: The Byrds, Crosby, Stills and Nash and Jackson Browne. I can't help but also think of Randy Newman. This recording was made in the San Fernando Valley (Southern California).
And finally, this made me think of an album I was listening to and enjoying but couldn't post because there is no physical release: Anna McClellan's "off my chest: 2012-2021".
Mad Anthony is being released by Earth Libraries - an incredibly diverse label based in Birmingham, Alabama.

Absolute Perfection - Santa Clarita to SFV
Dec. 7, 2022
It’s been raining A LOT in Southern California. The grass on the hillsides is already green and it’s only the beginning of December. In Santa Clarita and into the San Fernando Valley today, we saw green grass everywhere and perfect, brilliant OR clouds. There wasn’t a trace of pollution in the air, very few flyers, and the air was cool and fresh with temperatures in the mid-50s.
The forecast low tonight for Santa Clarita is 38 degrees and in Sylmar (the top photo) it’s 41. In Frazier Park, the forecast low is 27 degrees, but given that it was already reading 28 degrees on our car thermometer at about 8pm PST, I am going to guess that we need to apply the “subtract 10-15 degree rule” and leave a drip on the faucet tonight to prevent our pipes from freezing.
UPDATE, Dec. 8, 2022 - It was 11 degrees this morning at 6:30am PST! After making this post, the Weather Channel raised the overnight low to 30 degrees. If we had believed them, we wouldn’t have any running water this morning. We may need to consider changing the 10-15 rule to a 15-20 rule. At 8:30 am they say it is 31 degrees, but our thermometer still reads 16 degrees.
