Spoilers for Mysteries of the Past, and TW for implied abuse.

He’s very close to Bernadine. His father, ahem, absolutely sucks for obvious reasons, and Veronica was kind of neglectful and preferred working in Crimson Banks, leaving the child raising to Malcolm. Malcolm was far from a good parent, and Archie became very close to Bernadine, who loved Archie and treated him like her son.

Similarly, Bernadine’s birthday passed when Archie was in Switzerland, but he bought her some jewelry as a present and sent it to her, along with a few drawings he had made. (It is canon that he’s quite a good sketcher!)

He can’t swim and panics in water. Yeah, his Elysium Fields manor has a pool, but Archie never learned how to swim. A few times, he’s fallen into some body of water and has had to be rescued, whether by Wentworth or some other staff.

He graduated secondary school (basically high school) early in his midteens. It was shortly afterwards that he moved to the manor his Uncle Monty had left for him and adopted the persona of Mr. Alastor.

Wentworth headcanon: He had been in Malcolm’s service for years before he was assigned to be Archie’s valet, and may or may not have committed some crimes for Malcolm before killing Buchanan. He accompanied Archie when Archie moved to Elysium Fields.

After the Mr. Alastor incident, Malcolm reassigned/fired the staff at Archie’s Elysium Fields manor and closed it, wanting to make the public forget about the scandal as soon as possible. When Archie returned from Switzerland, Malcolm moved him back into his room in Malcolm’s household. And unfortunately for Archie, Malcolm was even harsher towards him then, considering the family was trying to take over Concordia, and any sort of failure in their individual tasks/goals (in Archie's case, spy on Justin Lawson) could not be tolerated. 

Samson Drake considered kidnapping him for a time, wondering if he could use Archie as leverage to get Malcolm to do what Samson wanted, before abandoning that idea and figuring sending a message to Malcolm via Archie's murder was a better idea.

Archie became obsessed with Giulietta when they met at a party. They ended up talking because they were the same age and Giulietta was trying to integrate into high society and thought befriending someone in the Rochester family would be a good idea, but Archie was incredibly awkward around her, so she cut the interaction short. Archie, however, became obsessed with her despite her disinterest in him, and well, we know what happened next. Giulietta soon forgot about that interaction, but Archie did not. 

This was kinda in my Giulietta headcanons list, but Archie barely dodged a hit from the mafia. Vittorio was going to get revenge on Archie for what Archie did to his daughters, and let’s just say that Archie was very lucky that he left for Switzerland and came back after Vittorio had already died. (Of course Archie ended up being brutally murdered anyway lmao oops).

Archie was very close to his Uncle Monty, who was Bernadine and Malcolm’s brother, and was hit incredibly hard when he died, especially because Malcolm was not-so-subtly implying that Archie needed to hurry up and get over his uncle’s death.  

The stuffed animal rabbits in Archie’s room in Tipping the Scales were handmade gifts from Monty, and after Malcolm told him to throw them away because they were ratty and he had several of them, Archie got into the habit of hiding the rabbits from Malcolm and staff to ensure that the rabbits didn’t get thrown away. 

In Get Off Your High Horse, he managed to drag Diego and the player to lunch with him (he does give you a burger after all), and spent the whole time yapping about himself. Diego drew a slightly unflattering caricature of him during said lunch.

He ended up in the same room with Arthur once after Bernadine and Arthur started courting. It was very awkward, considering in their last conversation when Arthur was forced to let him go, Archie was gloating about what he’d managed to pull off and accomplish. 

He genuinely liked arguing with Elisa in Heart of the Matter, just because he felt like she was one of the only people who could actually match wits with him. (I crack ship them lmao and I have a whole fanfic about them in Heart of the Matter here )

Summary:

The Monkey King was imprisoned under a mountain 500 years ago by his enemies in Heaven. Five hundred years later, the Earthly realm is overrun, and its humans oppressed, by demons. In his last moments, the scholar entrusts his daughter with the quest. She takes on the identity of Tripitaka and ventures out into the world, narrowly escaping death herself.

In a town she gives charity to a monk and ends up forced to work for a tavern owner, thus gaining a job and a room to sleep in. When the same demon that killed her adoptive father shows up, she secretly steals the magical crown and makes a run for it. When demons begin searching the town for her and the magic crown, she is disguised as a monk by the same monk she helped and successfully makes her way out of the city. In an opening along the side of a mountain, she finds the stony visage of the Monkey King's face, and puts the crown on his head. Finally, the Monkey King is free but he soon discovers that the crown is repressing most of his godly abilities. The pair return to the town and join up with Pigsy and Sandy, who are also gods, and the four of them begin their quest of finding the lost scrolls and gaining enough power to overthrow all the demons.

I've been thinking of ways they could incorporate Bucky's unusual upbringing in the comics into the MCU, what with him having been a literal mascot for an entire army regiment and raised in the training camp. That unusual upbringing is what led him to become Steve's little brother/sidekick figure. Bucky's father, Major Samson, was a soldier friend of his biological father George.

In both world wars, it wasn't uncommon for American soldiers stationed in Europe to "adopt" war orphans in conjunction with the Red Cross workers. Sometimes entire regiments and companies would adopt a French child that they called their "official mascot", there's about 38 cases of this happening (not the FCFS btw that was something else.) They weren't typically adopted as in actually brought back to America after, but it's not inconceivable that George Barnes had enough wealth and pull to formally adopt one of his regiment's mascot.

(Also worth noting that Bucky is the only one who's "Buchanan Barnes", Becca was just Barnes, and it's indeterminate if Buchanan is Winifred's maiden name or not, she's only ever Barnes too. Buchanan is a Scottish name, so idk if there's something there, maybe it could be a Red Cross worker who cared for him or any number of things. It's bizarre that his parents would name him after such a supremely unpopular president, unless he wasn't named by Americans who'd know about that cultural association.)

Bucky would've been almost 2 years old when the war ended, 2 and a half by the time the last American units left France in September 1919 when he was 3. Mascots were anywhere from babies all the way to 16 year olds.

Basically war orphan Bucky Barnes, orphaned in France in WW1 and adopted to America as a toddler/young child.

Brittany Howard Album Review: What Now

The title of Brittany Howard's second solo album is a question we've all likely asked, many times, perhaps to nobody in particular. It's evocative of a state of exasperation after, or perhaps even during, an overwhelming event, shared or personal. For Howard, she found herself asking, "What now?" a lot during the pandemic, a time period after which she had received heaps of critical acclaim for her debut album Jaime but also recently moved from New Mexico to Nashville after a divorce. As such, the songs on What Now are inspired by the desire to not simply live in the moment during chaos, but to make moments for herself. It starts with "Earth Sign", a song Howard wrote to manifest a partner. "Out there, there's a love waiting for me," she sings, her vocals layered, over piano, bowls, and Nate Smith's jazzy drum pitter-patter, sounding as far away as ever. As the song builds into a sort of stadium soul, upbeat and burbling, Howard ascends, shouting, "It's nearly there!" In real life, she did find love after writing the song, after all. And on the album, she similarly constructs a world for each song, ones that show how much she can soar when not beholden to a singular sound.

Co-produced with Shawn Everett and using all analog instrumentation, What Now nonetheless at times sounds otherworldly and cosmic, with instrumentation to match Howard's pained falsetto. She determinedly weaves through and along with the instrumentation, reaching out to grab whatever life has in store for her. On the title track, her vocals follow her buzz-saw riffs as she sings, "You're fucking up my energy / I told the truth, so set me free," channeling her passion into chugging funk and ready to take on whatever comes her way, continuing, "If you want someone to hate, blame it on me." Howard wished for "Red Flags", meanwhile, to purposefully sound cold, a foreboding warning to herself and her tendency to ignore the predictable nadirs of relationships. It succeeds greatly in intent of vibe, with Brad Allen Williams' off-kilter tremolo guitar chords flailing atop Smith's skittering drums. When Howard screams "Don't let it die" later in the song, you can hear her desperation, so badly wanting something bad to be good.

In fact, some of What Now's most successful songs come from Howard seemingly at war with herself. She slaps bass on "Patience" alongside former Alabama Shakes bandmate Zac Cockrell, creating a funk rhythm slow-burning enough to emulate her agonizing desire for a relationship to move faster. She repeats, "All we need is a little patience, girl," but the third time through, cuts off the statement, as if to make you wait for everything to come to fruition along with her. Even more stunning is jazz/hip-hop hybrid "Samson", a classic "Should I stay or should I go?" song that features a rolling drum beat and reflective-sounding trumpet from Rod McGaha. Towards the end of the song, Howard seems to be leaning towards leaving, heartbreakingly alone in the mix when she sings, "It's getting harder not to disappoint you." Her sentiment introduces an outro of meandering and circular trumpet and guitar, a sonic interpretation of her state of mind.

Howard may never stop wondering what's around the corner, but she knows better than to speculate. "I am having the time of my life," she sings on fried funk jam "Another Day". It's why much of What Now, even when subdued, sounds so immediate. Four-on-the-floor banger "Prove It To You", bolstered by an incredible band performance highlighted by Smith's propulsive beat and Lloyd Buchanan's stabbing keys, lays it all out at the club like Howard does in relationships: "I've never been any good at falling in love / I fall so hard I never get up," she sings. And on the surface, it may seem odd for What Now to close with the realist and depressive "Every Color In Blue", but Howard's inclusion of a song where the impending rain is "all out of rainbows" makes the moments when feelings are high all the more monumental. And when the songs ends, you want to press play on the album again, to experience her highs and lows with her for another round.

ATLANTA, GA (STL.News) James Ellner, M.D., and his Woodstock, Georgia pain management practice, Georgia Pain Management, P.C., and ambulatory surgical center, Samson Pain Center, P.C., agreed to pay $625,000 to resolve allegations that they violated the False Claims Act (FCA) by submitting improper claims to the Medicare and TRICARE programs for evaluation and management services and medically unnecessary urine drug screening tests. "The federal government expects that physicians and their practices will properly bill Medicare and TRICARE for services they provide," said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan.  "The Department of Justice will work diligently to hold healthcare providers accountable when they break the rules and overbill federal healthcare programs." "Health care fraud abuse like this case erodes the trust patients have in the health care system," said Keri Farley, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta.  "Government subsidized programs like Medicare help protects the healthcare needs of deserving Americans, and the FBI is determined to work with our partners to prevent people from illegally profiting off of them." "When providers submit improper claims, they threaten the integrity of taxpayer-funded health care programs and take those valuable resources away from their intended recipients," said Tamala Miles, Special Agent in Charge at the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG).  "HHS-OIG is committed to protecting federal health care programs from fraudulent and wasteful practices at the hands of providers." The FCA is a federal law that imposes civil liability on any persons or entities who submit, or cause to be submitted, false claims for payment on the federal government or its contractors.  It imposes treble damages (that is, three times the loss caused by the false claims) and a civil penalty between $12,537 to $25,076 per false claim.  The FCA is the primary authority used by the Civil Division of the United States Attorney's Office to redress fraud, waste, and abuse within federal programs, including, but not limited to, Medicare and TRICARE. The United States alleges that between May 1, 2015, and December 31, 2019, James Ellner and Georgia Pain Management, P.C. (Georgia Pain) submitted false claims to the Medicare and TRICARE programs for evaluation and management (E&M) services that were not reimbursable under federal health care programs.  Medicare generally prohibits healthcare providers from separately billing for E&M services provided on the same day as another medical procedure unless the E&M services are significant, separately identifiable, and above and beyond the usual preoperative and postoperative care associated with the medical procedure.  If an E&M service satisfies these criteria, the provider can use a billing code known as "Modifier 25" to bill for the significant and separately identifiable E&M services.  In this case, the United States alleges that Georgia Pain used Modifier 25 to improperly unbundle routine E&M services that were not separately billable from other minor surgical procedures performed on the same day; as a result, Georgia Pain claimed reimbursement from Medicare and TRICARE that it was not due. The United States also alleges that Ellner and Georgia Pain entered into an arrangement that violated the Anti-Kickback Statute, whereby a reference laboratory paid the salary of an individual who functioned as a free employee of Georgia Pain in exchange for Ellner's referral of urine drug tests – many of which were medically unnecessary. The civil settlement resolves a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia by a former employee of Georgia Pain under the qui tam, or whistleblower provisions, of the FCA.  United States ex rel.  Amy Tyson v. Georgia Pain Management, P.C., Samson Pain Center, P.C., and James Ellner, M.D., Civil Action 1:18-cv-5520.  Under the FCA, private citizens may bring suit for false claims on behalf of the United States and share in any recovery obtained by the government.  The whistleblower will receive $118,000 from the settlement.
