EARTH-BOUND MASSACRE IMMINENT -- THE SPACE DEMONS HAVE LANDED.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on the Dire Wraiths, space-faring demons from Wraithworld on a mission of catastrophic conquest of planet Earth, opening splash page, subsequent double splash page, and the following two pages, from "ROM" Vol. 1 #49. December, 1983. Marvel Comics.
"The wind howls in the high hollows this night, almost drowning out the hissing of the horrors that prepare to descend from the West Virginia hills. They are Dire Wraiths -- aliens -- demons from distant space driven in defeat to our shimmering planet. Their goal: conquest. Hunted here by ROM -- greatest of the spaceknights -- these sorcerous shape-shifters have determined to make their stand. And tonight, Clairton, West Virginia, ROM's adopted home -- shall share Wraithkind's revenge against the silver spaceknight!"
-- "ROM" Vol. 1 #49 (December 1983)

Yesterday was Sal Buscema's 89th birthday!

For that, I want to express how Sal Buscema’s clean line cartooning on Spectacular Spider-Man in the 90s is so nice to look at these days. It was such a contrast from all the other artists drawing Spidey at the time. It’s truly ageing beautifully!

His clean, bold linework had this timeless energy that made everything look so effortless, yet it hit so hard. He didn’t rely on flashy tricks or over-the-top detail — it was all about movement, clarity, and storytelling.
I think that his way of interpreting Spider-Man was lean, quick, and alive in a way that felt so authentic. Every web swing, every punch, every desperate struggle was full of weight and purpose. And his characters? The emotions he could pull out of a few sharp lines were incredible. Harry Osborn’s breakdowns, the pain in Peter’s face during his lowest moments, or even the smug grin of a villain mid-monologue — it was all there, perfectly captured.
And those fight scenes! Sal knew how to make action flow. He made every punch feel like it mattered, every swing feel dangerous. The villains popped off the page, too — Venom looked terrifying without being overdone, and the Green Goblin was pure chaos and madness.
In a decade where everyone was cranking the volume up to 11, Sal’s work stood out because it didn’t need to shout. It was confident, timeless, and full of heart. Happy 89th to a true master of the craft. His Spider-Man still swings in my mind like it’s 1995!
