Welcome to the 2024 Sailor Moon Rewatch!
Every week, we collectively watch four episodes of the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (1992) anime. Participants then discuss, celebrate, and create around those four episodes and tag their posts with #SailorMoonRewatch2024. By the end of 2024, we will have rewatched all 200 episodes!
What do I do?
You can engage as much or as little as you'd like. After watching (up to & including) the current week's episodes, you can reply to the discussion posts made on this blog, or make your own posts! Tagged posts have a chance of being reblogged here.
Did you take the perfect screencaps? Did you think a particular scene was funny, moving, intriguing, or fell flat? Has an episode changed or strengthened your perception of a character? Did something in the episode inspire you to draw, write, cook, edit, sew, sculpt, or otherwise make something? Did you realise you can perfectly closet-cosplay an outfit from one of the newest episodes? Have you themed your TV snacks around an upcoming plot? That's exactly the kind of stuff we want to see in the tag!
But, if you'd prefer, you're also welcome to simply sit back and scroll through the blog/tag, liking posts as you watch the series alongside everyone.
Where can I watch Sailor Moon?
Legally, you can purchase Viz's new official DVDs or Blu-rays, or you can stream the series on Hulu, Tubi, or Pluto TV.
Which version of Sailor Moon is this rewatch for?
This rewatch is about the first anime series, "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon" (1992) aka "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" (1992), not Sailor Moon Crystal (2014) - though if this rewatch is successful, there may be a group Crystal rewatch in the future!
Do I have to watch a specific dub?
Not at all! This sub uses the official Viz translations of episode titles, but you are free to watch in any release of any language dub. You can watch subtitled in Japanese, you can watch the old Dic/Cloverway dubs, or you can watch in any dubbed language you like.
If the rewatch covers an episode that was cut from the dub you're watching, you can elect to simply skip that episode or temporarily swap to a different dub/sub.
What if I get ahead of the rewatch?
That's fine! We just ask that you keep your tagged posts to the current episodes. Part of the goal of this event is to introduce new viewers to the series, and keeping to the schedule helps these first-time Moonies avoid spoilers. If you want to watch ahead, save up your notes/art/etc and then post them here when the relevant week comes 'round. That's what makes it a group event!
What if I'm late or get behind?
That's also fine! You can jump in any time and catch up on missed episodes at your leisure, or choose to simply start at whatever episode the rewatch is up to and fill in the gaps for yourself.
Similarly, you can choose to skip any episodes at any time for any reason. Episodes will be flagged with relevant content warnings in the week's introduction post.
The first four episodes will be covered over the first two weeks of 2024 in order to give people more time to join. After this, each single week will typically cover four episodes. You can see the full schedule here!

“The kryptonite is destroying what little of me that reminds. This is the end, Filo. [...] I know, we have never had enough time. for that I am sorry Kal-el, Clark, my boy. You have turned your power into a shield for the helpless. You have filled your life with love. You are more than I could have ever hoped for. And maybe one day you'll forgive me for leaving you again.” - Jor-El, My Adventures with Superman (Season 2, Ep. 01)
The Toonami Trending Rundown for the month of May 2024. This past month saw the thrilling season finale of Ninja Kamui, which lead to the return of My Adventures with Superman for its season 2 premiere.
For the season finale of Ninja Kamui on the night of May 4-5, #Toonami trended in the USA alongside Ninja Kamui and Zom 100. One Piece also trended on Tumblr.
During the nights of May 11-12 and 18-19, the regular lineup got a fortnight off as Toonami marathon all 13 episodes Ninja Kamui over the two weeks. No trends were spotted on the first marathon night, but on the second, #Toonami would trend alongside Ninja Kamui on Twitter.
Finally, the night of May 25-26, My Adventures with Superman saw its second season premiere air on Toonami with an hour long special of the first two episodes. This also meant that Zom 100 had to take an additional third week off, in an ironic reminiscence of when the show saw significant delays during its original run in Japan. Both #Toonami and #MyAdventuresWithSuperman trended in the USA on Twitter and on Tumblr as a result.
youtube
According to My Adventures with Superman executive producer Jake Wyatt on The Showrunner Whisperer podcast, Seasons 3 and 4 for the show has been outlined and creatively approved, but he can't speak on whether they have been greenlit for production by DC and Warner Bros Animation. Of course, if you do wish to see future seasons of this show realized, be sure to tune in every Saturday (or set your DVRs) and catch up on the show by streaming the show on Max, adultswim.com, and other digital outlets.
May 31 saw a major milestone for Toonami as the block would be expanding to Friday afternoons with Toonami Rewind from 5-7 p.m. EDT. Sailor Moon returned to Toonami for the first time in 23 years to headline the inaugural Friday afternoon lineup, with the VIZ Media re-dub produced in 2014 starring Stephanie Sheh as Usagi. It was joined with an hour of DBZ Kai and OG Naruto. The trends for the premiere of Toonami Rewind, alongside the night of June 1-2, will be showcased on next week’s rundown; which I will have out tomorrow or Saturday. Until next time, stay gold.

All the seriously queer stuff in the back half of Sailor Moon
In case it wasn't obvious when I released a little mini-RPG a few months ago where you basically play as the villains, I've been gradually making my way through the entire run of Sailor Moon for the past year or so. Specifically I'm watching the 2014 Viz dub that covers all 200 episodes, trying to be as faithful as they can with it. It's been a really interesting experience, since I absolutely watched the old DiC dub back in the day, saw a fansub of one of the movies around the same time, and heard plenty of things about the missing seasons (particularly the infamous "cousins" thing from the Cloverway dub) over the years, and now I have all the context. And the context gets really shockingly overtly queer, turns out!
So first, let's just all get on the same page with the English language localizations of Sailor Moon over the years. Back in the 90s, Sailor Moon aired… well everywhere, with the English language version being a dub from DiC, which I will go to my grave defending as probably the best dub of anything I can think of. Fantastic casting all around, changes to the soundtrack that were actually for the better (keeping all the melodies but recording new versions that… aren't optimized to sound show-perfect when recreated by the cheapest sound generators one can shove in a toy, plus some original songs shoved into a few episodes). They did make some edits/cuts, but pretty minor ones, especially compared to the complete reworkings most anime of the era went through when coming to American TV, and I'm still not used to Luna not being prissy and British here.
That dub only lasted up through the second season. Past that, there was a dub of seasons 3 and 4 from Cloverway, which had some really questionable performances, and is where the infamous "they're cousins" bit came in. This also aired on TV in some places, but didn't have nearly the same omnipresent distribution as the DiC seasons (… and now I'm feeling old as I ponder whether to explain how local TV affiliates did their own thing back in the broadcast days). Then in the early 2000s there was a DVD release from Pioneer with cut/uncut versions of everything, apparently, which may or may not have recycled those dubs. I don't really have the energy to track that down, specifically. Anyway all the rights expired, gathered dust forever, then Viz picked it up and did this new faithful localization, and it took me about a decade to spot it on a streaming service.
So we've got 5 seasons, 200 episodes total, and a hell of a lot of formulaic structuring here. Every season (or half a season) we've got some main villain with an evil plan we may or may not get any details on, and some small number of underlings who then take their 5-10 episode long turns pursuing their goal in a way that inevitably generates monsters of the week, and meanwhile every season we have another conflict on the good guy side where someone is trying to locate some special person and ignoring the 50 or so obvious signs which main cast member it is while the audience gets frustrated. Oh and each individual episode has the same rigid structure of everyone getting caught up in some wacky teen trend, then there's a monster, they transform and fight a bit to no real end, then Sailor Moon gets around to using a finisher because that's literally the only thing actually capable of ending a fight. Honestly it's less "formulaic TV writing" and more like some sort of daily meditation. No way in hell I'd be able to sit through all of it if I had to look at the screen the whole time. This is background viewing while I work. Oh and I'm assuming everyone has at least enough passing familiarity to understand that if I say the name of a planet I'm talking about a teenage girl who's the reincarnation of some sorta magical girl/sentai squad member.
Season 1 has pretty gay vibes in places, but MOSTLY there's plausible deniability for all of it. We spend about half the season just establishing the characters of Moon Mercury and Mars, then quickly bringing in Jupiter and playing it up like a big shocking reveal for Venus. There's also a bunch of relationship drama between Moon, Tuxedo Mask, and the guy who runs the local arcade that she has a crush on and spends a while thinking is actually Tuxedo Mask instead of his actual identity of uh… a college-aged guy we're saying is the destined love interest of this 14-year old girl he's frankly pretty abusive towards. So, a lot of straight nonsense there. Meanwhile the evil queen's got these 4 generals, two of them are plainly dating, and no matter how you slice it, that's pretty overtly queer, but there's a valid argument to have over how we actually should slice it.
I was aware at the time that the DiC dub just ran with Zoicite here being a woman, making this a straight relationship, and I kinda figured they did a bit of tweaking and editing to hide that this was actually one of those bishonen types who were popular at the time who happened to be gay. Honestly though, watching it through a modern lens, it is REALLY hard to not just see a woman here, even when we're throwing he/him pronouns around. Like, if I'm handling a new dub, I'm just going to say Zoicite is a trans girl, who I'm at least headcanoning as being out for years, on HRT, and at that point where she can put on a suit designed for a man and nah that's a woman wearing a suit. Kinda just wraps around and makes me appreciate the old dub's handling more than the new one.
Season 2 (or R) doesn't really give us anything to work with, if I'm honest. There's probably some gals-being-pals energy amongst the main cast here and there. That's kind of always low-key present, especially with Jupiter, who has the whole big tough girl who wears long skirts thing sorta gay energy, and I want to say she ends up going to a dance with Mercury somewhere early on because one of them can't find a date otherwise.
But, we've got this filler arc with two dark elves in a tree who just kinda both hit on everyone of the opposite gender while the main cast sits in a holding pattern, then we get a proper villain squad not really getting enough spotlight time to have much of anything going on, and this whole weird thing where Moon and Mask's annoying toddler comes back from the future to… brainwash Moon's parents into thinking she's their daughter, and then she gets turned into an evil adult, and there's this whole bit about her having some sort of grim reaper/time guardian as a nanny (this is Pluto, the outer planets really have different things going on)… but again, mostly straight/cis flavored nonsense.
Then suddenly here comes season 3 (or S, pronounced "Super" which makes things real confusing), from a director who would later go on to create Utena, and in addition to just being the single best season of the series for a number of other reasons, everyone is canonically into girls now! It's shockingly overt about establishing that too, and reiterating the point several times.
It all gets started with Uranus and Neptune showing up. We kind of have this three faction conflict this season, where there's a proper main villain and squad of monster making minions, but then there's also this overtly queer power couple whose goal is basically to check out the "pure hearts" monsters of the week keep ripping out of people because they need to check them for these three macguffins they need to… reform the holy grail of all things to give to their leader they're too oblivious to know is actually Moon.
More importantly though, aside from making it abundantly clear that these two are banging every night, they have this very open relationship where Neptune is more than cool with Uranus hooking up with any given girl she's inclined to, and/or grabbing gals for threeways. And like, this isn't me taking a broad interpretation of things, it's weird how directly they just come out and say this. The other thing we have going on is that Uranus is just, like, the butchest of the butch.
Literally everyone just assumes she's a guy when they first meet, and quite a few people go into serious denial when corrected on the matter. And she kinda tends to react to all the misgendering with the sort of bemused nonchalance that makes it pretty easy to read her as actually being nonbinary. I swear there's an episode where she clarifies she's not a guy with that particular sort of emphasis suggesting that doesn't necessarily narrow things down to just "girl," too. And apparently Crystal actually DOES bite the bullet and flat out state she's nonbinary (or at least "both male and female"). That's cool, but there is no way in hell I'm going to sit through Crystal.
Anyway, point is, everybody wants to hook up with Uranus. Everyone. There's a whole episode where the power couple straight up takes Jupiter out on a date, the rest start gossiping about her being out on a date with two girls, everyone starts off shocked, then someone clarifies who it's with and everyone's like "oh, well yeah then I'd take them up on that too," with a little extra push back from Mars before she gets called out as trying to stay in the closet when she's clearly got a stash of photos of hot girls in suits.
This of course really makes me wonder about that Cloverleaf dub and why they went with that whole "cousins" thing to avoid addressing the overt queerness here, instead of taking the same approach DiC did of just making Uranus a guy. This would technically introduce the problem of having a guy in a miniskirt for fight scenes, but, eh, that'd be easier to edit around than you'd think. Uranus generally enters a fight scene pre-transformed firing an attack off from offscreen, arguing with the core cast a little, and leaving. Attacks are stock animation you can drop in anywhere, so that much is easy enough to chop out or replace with Neptune's attack. I don't know how one would even begin to cut around all the overt gay stuff though.
Nothing especially queer going on with the evil side of things. The villains are kind of amazing but too career oriented for relationships. I guess just for the sake of giving full context for the seasons most people haven't seen and fill in the obvious hole in the roster I can mention the eventual deal that the little goth girl Chibi-Usa spends the season hanging out with turns out to be the main villain's daughter, Sailor Saturn, and kind of the antichrist? Like I said, the outer planets aren't just cast expansions, they really have their own stuff going on. She also dies and reincarnates, doing so the long way where she sits the next season out being just a baby, which once again begs the question of whether when everyone dies at the end of the first season they just kinda magically come back to life with missing memories just as a temporary thing for a filler arc to play with or they really dd all reincarnate and have new families a decade and change later. Weird that that never got firmly pinned down.
Anyway though season 4 (AKA Super S, which is pronounced "Supers" and now you see why I prefer just numbers)… sucks and you should skip it. No sense of stakes, no real character work, non-threatening villain, shockingly dull monster designs, no outer planets, an ending that just drags on for what feels like forever and has no payoff. The only things it has in its favor are the inherent absurdity that people are wondering if Chibi-Usa is like full-on dating Pegasus (yes, the horse) and Fish's Eye.
So we have two different miniboss squads this season, the latter of which is a quartet of permanent-child acrobats working for the impressively titled if boring in practice Dead Moon Circus, preceded by three animals-turned-into-humans-by-a-witch with a weird What-you-originally-were's Eye naming scheme. Two of them are just dull slutty guys, but Fish's Eye is plainly and overtly a trans woman, and gets something of an arc about being willing to give up her own humanity for the greater good. It's a shame she's stuck in the practically unwatchable season, but at least she's on the REALLY short list of major villains who gets to have a happy ending. Usually even when someone has a nice redemption arc with the power of love and friendship they still get bumped off by another villain.
Different localizations have done different things with her. Some go "crossdressing gay guy" some just say she's a woman and leave her transness out of it. The 2014 localizaton is pretty unambiguous about though, so, that's really nice. Casting could be better, but still.
Then finally we come to season 5 (Sailor Stars), which I think is even more queer than season 3 was, which is really saying something, and was also directed by someone who would go on to helm another girly show with a serious case of The Genders, Ouran High School Host Club. Structurally it's a bit weird, because the first few episodes are just straight up taking a mulligan on the terrible finale of season 4, this time with the outers in (Saturn hyper-ages back to her standard 10 or whatever and gets a bunch of inexplicable knowledge and memories which is cool but never really paid off), the main villain doing something, and as a shocking rarity for the series, this whole mini-arc where characters are broken into pairs of one inner one outer and get to bounce off each other in a way the series frustratingly usually never does.
More importantly though, at least for this post's purposes, basically the first scene of the season is Uranus and Neptune having a flirty exchange ending with something along the lines of "let's save the pillow talk for when we're actually in bed together later tonight," which sort of sets the tone for just how blatantly these two are talking about their extremely active sex life in no uncertain terms, out in public. Some of the other characters are a bit weirded out by their complete lack of filter, but hey whatever.
The real proper start of the season though has our core cast finally starting high school, once again reminding us that everyone is at LEAST 4 years younger than everything about their designs, interests, and handling of responsibilities would indicate. This also reminds us how deeply creepy the Moon/Tuxedo Mask relationship is, but fortunately he hops a plain to America and is straight up out this season, and as an added bonus Chibi-Moon finally goes back to the future. Before you get too excited she IS shortly replaced with an even younger, barely verbal new mystery gremlin called Chibi-Chibi whose existence nobody can account for, but at least she's actually cute and not akin to the baby from Dinosaurs. More importantly though, as the girls enter high school they end up in a class with the titular Sailor Stars, AKA The Three Lights, AKA Fighter Maker and Healer, a popular boy band who are also a new mysterious set of Sailors with what I assume are intentionally quite confusing gender shenanigans in play.
Normally, they are hot lanky boys, boastful about their masculinity to the point of it bordering on misogyny, but also super super femme, with earings, hair down to their ankles, and very noticeably female VAs in both Japanese and English. Then when there's a fight they're very plainly hot lanky girls in bikinis and one of them has an attack shouting "Star Gentle Uterus!" before hitting a monster with a glob of liquid to a disgusted reaction. And their transformation sequences (and bikinis, and some shirtless scenes) make it absolutely crystal clear that yeah there is some magical reconfiguring of their bodies when making the switch. The show pointedly avoids elaborating on what the deal is past that in terms of which they form they started with/feel more comfortable in/why they switch it up/etc. which would normally frustrate me as one of those Schroedinger's Queer Rep situations, but I very much get the impression that we're going for intentional confusion and ambiguity in service to a general message that if you're into someone you shouldn't have hangups about their gender or what it says about your own sexuality and just kind of accept your feelings and them as a person and I am pretty OK with that.
youtube
The cast is too. Mercury Mars Jupiter Venus and for good measure Luna all kinda spent the entire season fixating on how to hook up with any/all of The Three Lights, meanwhile at basically any moment there isn't a fight scene or some plot exposition happening, Fighter is VERY ACTIVELY pursuing Moon in a sexual fashion, with pretty overtly stated tension before damn near every commercial break over whether this is going to be the scene where Sailor Moon gets absolutely railed by this maybe-genderfluid pop star from another world. And I have to just say as a brief aside that while we obviously never go there, I kinda wish we did? Tuxedo Mask is WAY too old to be dating someone Moon's age, even if we do the thing where we just add 4 to everyone's stated age. Plus he kinda treats her like absolute garbage for the whole show, and even when they're in a more wholesome mode the whole thing feels toxic and messed up. Meanwhile Fighter here is literally the same age, clearly into her, and beyond the one character flaw, an actual decent person. Though again, really damn forward. Still beats the hell out of the guy in college dating a middle schooler, and kinda flirting with his own prepubescent future-daughter.
There's also this huge confrontational thing between Fighter and Uranus, where it's slightly unclear if Uranus is being protective of Moon, violently jealous because Neptune is totally and surprisingly overtly open to hooking up with anyone from this boy band too, or just kinda trying to defend her position as the hot androgynous badass who swept into town with the intent of hooking up with every girl in the zip code eventually. Meanwhile Fighter thinks Uranus is a kind of toxic macho dude and really questions the whole "she's not a guy" thing, which is, you know, interesting. Pluto never really weighs in on this because… Pluto kinda lives outside of time and space and has maybe 8 minutes of real screen time in the entirety of the show.
Past that, we've got a bunch of other gay stuff too! We're back to cranking the general queer energy of the core cast up past the point of plausible deniability with regards to each other and a random girl trying to pass along a love letter with some confusion as to who it's for. It also bears mention that when the full deal of the new characters and their gender flipping comes to light, Jupiter makes an active point of making it clear that she is still 100% down and like, hey, I already knew you were the least conflicted of the bunch about how bi you all are, but I appreciate the active refutation of transphobia is still cool. We've got an honestly adorable pair of villains where one is frankly such a bimbo she's completely incapable of doing the evil general thing on her own or preparing her own food, and her hyper-competent girlfriend helping her out while also having to come up with cover stories because they're supposed to be pitted against each other. They'd definitely get a nice happy ending in one of the even numbered seasons, especially once it's made clear that they're very much being coerced into the evil stuff/taking things down from the inside, but… yeah this season ends up going super dark.
I don't want to totally get into how absolutely pitch dark the big 8-part series finale gets and spoil the hell out of it since if it wasn't clear, the odd numbered seasons are all really good stuff you should watch on your own, plus this one has a bunch of genuine twists, but I have to get into some of it in my mission of explaining how gay it all is. Consider yourself warned.
As happens kind of a lot in Sailor Moon finales, the bulk of the season 1 cast gets killed off once the main villain steps in to start getting her hands dirty, but here it's early enough on in the arc for Moon to really process it and give it the weight that maybe it'll actually stick this time. In particular of course she's worked up about Tuxedo Mask turning out to have died off camera at the start of the season (the impression to that point being that he's too distracted with a trip to America to check his messages or maybe just straight up ghosted her), but then almost as broken up over losing Mars, because yeah, those two in particular actually end up with a surprising amount of low key romantic tension between them by the end of things.
Then once it's time to get the outer planets off the table, all four of them end up in a no-win situation against the villain, who does that villain thing of of offering them a choice of just being killed and having their souls ripped out to be made into new stars (this is kind of her whole thing, see), OR if anyone's up for it, they can switch sides, still get their souls ripped out to be made into stars, but given funky magic bracelets that allow them to stay alive, just, you know, corrupted by evil and acting as her new villain squad. It's actually established right before the last one gets vaporized that all her original henchgals are in fact the Sailors of other planets she forced into the same deal just before the last one gets vaporized for failure, making it that much tragic in retrospect that the cute competence-disparity couple didn't make it.
Anyway, Uranus and Neptune actually take the deal. Like, zero hesitation. Part of it is eventually explained as Uranus having enough faith that she's too into her girlfriend to be fully corrupted and might get a chance to sucker punch the villain with her own soul extractors (which she IS it just doesn't work), and failing that Moon'll probably swing some kinda deus machina (which is an admittedly safe bet, honestly). But another part of it really is just "yeah screw it, if I still get to be with my girlfriend I'll take being evil over being dead" and they really do go through with it and promptly murder their oldest friend and a very young girl. Don't let anyone tell you Sailor Moon is one of those power of love and friendship always triumphs sorta shows. I don't know that the power of love and friendship even ties the scoreboard if we tally things up over the whole series. Oh and the final final final showdown has a nude Sailor Moon with angel wings just trying to hug it out with the main villain, which I guess could also maybe be read as a bit queer.
So yeah. Sailor Moon. When you don't have a puritanical edit, it's queer as hell. Everyone's bi or non-binary-and-sapphic. Several different flavors of trans rep. Goes out on a note of not getting hung up on gender. All of this in a roughly 30 year old series now, aimed at young impressionable girls. … actually for that matter it's also a show aimed at girls with really powerfully horny monster girl designs all over the place. Possibly relevant.
Oh yeah, and maybe consider throwing me some money via Patreon? I can't actually cover next month's rent as things stand.

Here’s an unexpected question: Who would you say was the best English voice of Sailor Moon?
This may be a controversial statement, but I think Terri Hawkes (who did most of the DiC Sailor Moon dub) is my favorite. I'll put that down to nostalgia somewhat, but I think it's notable that even once the Sailor Moon dub continued on Toonami, Linda Ballantyne was clearly trying to match the cadence of Terri Hawkes. Sort of like those early seasons of Sonic X where Jason Griffith is kind of just doing a bad impression of Ryan Drummond.
It was for that reason alone I never actually watched almost any Sailor Moon S when it was running on Toonami. It was too weird hearing someone who was different but seemed to be trying so hard to continue someone else's performance like that.
I have barely paid attention to the new Viz dub. From all the clips I've seen it looks incredibly bland and generic. DiC may have cut Sailor Moon to shreds in the process of dubbing it, but at least it had a personality. Viz's 2014 Sailor Moon dub is just super average and generic. It's "fine" in the most derogatory sense.
Which, like, I get! That's kind of what you probably should do with Sailor Moon, because again, DiC's dub was a pretty notable hack job that paved the way for companies like 4Kids to flourish. If your whole point is to go back and redub Sailor Moon and "fix it" you should probably go out of your way to avoid doing anything DiC did.
But it means a lot of the girls sound indistinguishable to my ears. They're all doing the exact same "teen" voice and it all blends together in a really bad way. DiC had the right idea picking a bunch of voices that sounded so distinct. Ami is a little nasally, Mina has a more sophisticated tone, Lita has a bit of that rasp like Peppermint Patty, etc.
And, like, Luna just sounding like a normal person in the Viz dub is maybe the weirdest thing of all, to me.
So yeah. Despite the DiC dub being A Problem, it's still how I picture all of these characters, inaccuracies and all.

Hi! I’m watching Sailor Moon (Dubs) too and I just finished season 4 (the last dubbed season so far) so I understand the struggle! BUT! Fear not! For the first half of Season 5 (the last season) will be out on JUNE 18! I’m not sure when the second half will be out, but they’re working on it! Just hold out a little longer :) (Also I super agree that Ami is ace/aro/aroace and I’m super excited for you to get to season 3 for more LGBTQIA+ adventures)
I had to do a lot of googling before I completely understood the situation, but this IS encouraging! Maybe if I procrastinate enough in finishing this series, I’ll get to watch it in the dubbed version after all! There are 127 dubbed episodes available on Hulu, after all, and I’m not the type who binges shows, certainly not ones with 25 minute episodes. I probably won’t even finish season 1 until early to mid June, depending on how interested I still am in the show. I don’t really intend on buying the DVDs, so I’ll just wait until they start streaming. Seeing as this will most likely take a long time yet, I may just suck it up and watch the sub. Of course, there’s also the slightest chance that I get so interested in the show that I decide to buy the DVDs, after all. Who knows!
And as for those LGBTQIA+ adventures, I been spoiled but I’m still super excited to meet Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune ;) I already love Zoisite and Kunzite, even though they’re villains and will undoubtedly die by the end of season 1.
#asks#sailor moon#I am very very unfamiliar with anime fandom culture#so I had to google exactly exactly what was up with this dub business#apparently viz started releasing new dubs of Sailor Moon in 2014#I was confused bc I could only find dubs up to season 3 on hulu and it took me forever to find out that the new dub for part 2 of the season#was released on dvd a year and two months ago#meaning it probably won't be on hulu for a long while#and forget about season 5#I don't really feel like dropping 80 bucks to watch all of season 4 and another 80 for season 5 but who knows how I'll feel when I get there

Where to start with Sailor Moon?
From time to time I’ve seen people ask about how to get into Sailor Moon or how they might introduce it to someone else.
As such I’ve made this to (hopefully) help people out.
Introduction
So first of all you should know that the official name for the over all franchise is ‘Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon’. This can (and has) been translated a few ways, but the current official name is ‘Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon’. Basically everything connected with Sailor Moon carries this full official name, but for the purposes of this post I’m just going to shorten things to ‘Sailor Moon’.
Moving on, there are in fact different versions of the Sailor Moon story, even putting aside the various attempts at translating the story into different languages. Each version is best viewed as its own entity, sort of how there have been various versions of Sherlock Holmes that exist independently of one another.
For the sake of simplicity, I’m going to mostly keep this post to the original Japanese iterations of Sailor Moon, albeit from the point of view of an English speaking audience member.*
The main versions of the Sailor Moon story are as follows:
1) The Manga
The manga iteration of Sailor Moon began around late 1991/early 1992. It includes around 50 chapters, a handful of side stories and a prequel manga of sorts called Codename: Sailor-V. There have been several different English translations of this material over the years. However, my personal recommendation would be to experience the story through the ‘Eternal Editions’. These are easily available in print and digitally. As of this writing Codename: Sailor-V is scheduled to be collected in at some point in 2021, thus collecting all the manga stories.
2) The 1992 anime
This is the most famous iteration of Sailor Moon and loosely adapts the manga to the point where it is its own entity. It spans 200 episodes across five seasons, with each season being given its own subtitle. E.g. season 2 is referred to as ‘Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon R’. Additionally there were a handful of shorts and specials connected with the anime and three films. I have already compiled a watch list for the show that I hope will help you navigate everything.
Like the manga, there have been multiple efforts to subtitle the show into English, particular among fan subbing circles. However, the easiest way to watch the show with English subs is to do so via a streaming service (last I checked it was available on Hulu and Crunchyroll) or to purchase the DVDs and Blu-rays from Viz Media, although you can also purchase them digitally on Amazon.com too.
3) The musicals
On and off since 1993 there have been stage musicals produced for Sailor Moon. If you ever see the term ‘Sera Myu’ being used by fans (or even official sources) understand that it’s shorthand for these musicals.
The musicals are based chiefly upon the manga and the original anime, although with some original embellishments here and there. The degree to which a musical cuts closer to the manga, or the anime or does something all its own varies from one production to another. I’m not very well read up on the musicals I must admit, but it is to my understanding that each production exists independently from one another beyond at times carrying over cast and staff members. In essence there is no particular order you need to watch the musicals in. However, if you want more info on the musicals see the below EDIT, which is more well informed than I am.
To my knowledge, (which is limited in this particular case) all the musicals have been filmed but there has never been any kind of official English release for them. There have however been fan subbed efforts made for all of them.
4) The 2003 live action TV show
In fan circles this show is referred to as ‘Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon’ or ‘Pretty Guardian’ or ‘PGSM’. This is because it was the first piece of Sailor Moon media to bear that particular English translation of ‘Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon’. Basically if you see ‘Pretty Guardian’ or ‘PGSM’, understand it is referencing this show.
The show exclusively adapts the ‘Dark Kingdom’ storyline, the first storyline in every version of Sailor Moon. The show was made in a similar vein to shows like Kamen Rider or Super Sentai and the latter’s American adaptation, Power Rangers. However, it also incorporates elements of Japanese soap opera dramas too, original elements that were never in any version of Sailor Moon beforehand and many different spins on the plot points that had been covered before.
To my knowledge, like Sera Myu, no official English release for this show exists, but English fansubs are out there somewhere. If you manage to find the show then you should watch the various episodes and specials in their original broadcast order. For this Wikipedia is your friend.
5) Sailor Moon Crystal
Sporadically since 2014 a new Sailor Moon anime has been in production. This new anime cuts much closer to the original manga (although it still makes some changes ) than any other version of Sailor Moon. As of this writing, the show has yet to be completed and still has material from the manga left to adapt. The show is available to watch with English subtitles from the same sources as the original 1992 anime, including DVDs and Blu-Rays from Viz Media.
Like the original anime, Crystal’s story arcs and seasons have gone under different names. The first two seasons/arcs are officially just called ‘Sailor Moon Crystal’, whilst the third is explicitly titled ‘Sailor Moon Crystal Season III’. In place of a fourth season two films, Sailor Moon: Eternal Part 1 and Part 2, were produced. As of this writing, the Eternal films have yet to have any kind of English release. To make your life easier, watch this show in the order of the original air/release dates. Just remember the Eternal films are to be viewed after Season III.
Which version should you start with?
Whilst that is how the franchise breaks down, it is not the order a Sailor Moon newbie should try experiencing it in.
My personal recommendation would be to begin with the original 1992 anime and then move on to any of the other versions from there. This is because the original anime is aimed at a younger audience and was incredibly influential on basically every other version of the story.
However, if 200 episodes or more is too intimidating for you, then simply check out the manga. It’s far shorter, skewed a bit older and tells a concise and complete story.
And if you are still apprehensive then I’d highly recommend watching the first Sailor Moon film, Sailor Moon R The Movie. This is a very good film unto itself but it is a microcosm of the characters and themes that define the franchise as a whole. If you dislike this Sailor Moon just isn’t for you.
P.S. If you are simply dead set against subtitles then you should know the original 1992 anime and Crystal have in fact been dubbed into English by Viz Media. In fact, the first four seasons of the original anime, along with the first three films, have two English dubs, variously produced by DiC, Cloverway and Pioneer. These dubs were made in the 1990s and early 2000s and are currently not legally available anywhere.
*Things get more complicated when we consider that even in Japan there have been updated and altered versions of the Sailor Moon manga, anime, etc. We aren’t going to worry about that in this post though. They exist and maybe someday you might be inclined to check them out, but you know...baby steps...
EDIT #1: The following information comes from https://euribear.tumblr.com/
Just something I want to add on about the Sailor Moon Musicals.
If you see a musical with the word Kaiteiban (revision) at the end of the name, that means it’s a revised version of the previous musical. Things added or taken away, different cast members at times, etc.
Also, there are three musicals (technically four) that have a continuous storyline. Starring Miyuki Kanbe as Sailor Moon, Last Dracul, Transylvania no Mori (and its Kaiteiban), and Death Vulcan should be viewed in order.
The Bandai era of musicals were from 1993 to 2005.
The Nelke musicals started in 2014 and there was one each year for five years. One musical for each arc of the manga.
There are also the NogiMyu. These are musicals that solely focus on the Dark Kingdom arc and they star various members of the pop idol group Nogizazaka46.
There were two teams of cast members for the inner senshi for both years, 2018 and 2019. The same story overall, just different actresses.
There was also Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live. My personal favorite, this was a musical performed only a few times. A couple of days in Japan in 2018 and then once in Paris in 2019 and then in Washington D.C. and later in NYC. I got to see this in person on one of the three showings in NYC. A dream come true. Unfortunately, this was never recorded, though they did release an instrumental musical album of the show.

Oh damn! Thanks for the correction!
My point still stands as the minority was not enough to influence change in the recurring themes & tone of 90s anime, assuming anyone on staff reguardless of gender wanted to make changes to their formula at all. The end result is still as it was then.
Even with the 2014 Viz dub the core is unchanged because 90s Sailor Moon still comes from such different writing prespective.
Which is why no matter how they change the artstyle, Sailor Moon Crystal will always be closer in relation to the manga as that's the story it's reflecting and it shows!
In case anyone was wondering, this is the difference between 90s Mamoru and Usagi's relationship and their Crystal relationship
Same scene, same characters, different behaviors.
90s Mamoru isn't into pda with Usagi. He's a hella introvert. The writers also had him start out as a university student. Which even if not by much does increase the age gap between him and Usagi. Usagi is usually the one who wants to be kissed. This isn't always the case since when they're alone Mamo is very affectionate. But he also has boundaries with her.
It should also be taken into account that 90s anime Usagi was meant to be a role model for young girls. To appeal to a certain audience her maturity was downplayed. This effects the dynamic between Mamoru and her even further. Their age gap isn't that big in truth. Its at most 3 years. But when you look at it in terms of what grades they are in, it gets muddy. College student dating a middle schooler in the 8th grade. When said in that way, people's response to their age gap is justified.
Crystal Mamoru and Usagi are a different story. Their dynamic is that of a middle school and a high school student. They meet up before school everyday and the two are *very* intimate. By act 19 Usagi stays the night with him in his apartment. And the rest of the series they are often seen sleeping in the same bed. Mamoru is almost always the one who goes in for the kiss and like shown in the above examples, he's not quick to pull away.
Even though 90s Mamoru is the older and (supposedly) more mature iteration of the character, his and Usagi's relationship is far less mature than that of their manga/crystal counterparts. And I think this is due to the origin of their relationship. Naoko Takeuchi wrote Mamoru and Usagi as Lovers from a Past Life. And if you saw the art of them that is spread throughout the manga, you'd know that its in a very literal sense. To put it bluntly, manga Mamoru and Usagi ain't virgins and Naoko doesn't hide it. Sorry to burst any one's bubble but whatever age-of-consent laws you're worried about with these two, doesn't matter in Naoko's eyes.
However if this dynamic was acknowledged in the 90s anime people would be rioting on Toei's doorstep and Sailor Moon would've got canceled. So yea very glad they went the route they did 😅

Did you know that June Foray is the female Mel Blanc. June is voicing of many of well-loved cartoon characters including Cindy Lou Who of the 1966 cartoon version of Dr. Suess' How the Grinch Stole Christmas and the famous of all is 2 Looney Tunes characters Witch Hazel and Granny. Cartoon Network's The Looney Tunes Show in 2011 was June Foray's last gig before her saddest August 2017 passing but her spirit lives on through the hearts of fans including her successors EG Daily, Grey Delise Griffin and Candi Milo. Did you know that Stephanie Sheh is a huge Sailor Moon fan like her fellow castmates Cherami Leigh and Amanda Cèline Miller. One day Stephanie is getting her voice of Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon and then in 2014 she did. Stephanie did her voice of Sailor Moon in the Viz Media redub including the finally found final season. Stephanie Sheh is dubbed the June Foray of Japanese anime and besides Sailor Moon Stephanie leads her voice of Naruto's lady love interest and future wife Hinata Hyunga in the 2002 anime alongside the 2007 sequel and the Boruto spinoff. This is why on March 3rd is animation double duty as the day of June Foray and Stephanie Sheh's Herstories

Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT

My collection of the Sailor Moon 90's anime, Viz Media re-dub 2014-2019, dual audio Blu-ray and DVD.
All 5 seasons, all 3 movies, all of the pre-order gift with purchase cards from each "Part 2" set, the slip covers from each "Part 2," and even the "Part 2 Goes Here" placeholder boxes are inside those slip covers. I kept most of the stickers that were on the plastic wrap and I've even got two misprinted items that had to be replaced. Almost everything...except for that stinking first coin. (Evidently pre-ordering a November release in July wasn't quick enough to get that one. T_T)
Anyway, I just wanted to mark the occasion now that my Season 5 Part 2 order finally arrived. A faithful re-dub of Sailor Moon used to be a thing I would daydream about and then in 2014 it started happening. Now it's complete.

If you were to describe sailor moon to someone who may be interested in it- how would you do so?
Sorry I was at work so I couldn’t answer the ask till now. For me, I started watching Sailor Moon in kindergarten so the very first version I watched was the Canadian english dub by DIC (they only did the first season or so, cloverway did other seasons), which a lot of people hate. Because of the voice acting, too many filler episodes, censored a lot of inappropriate content and anything japanese. But I grew up with it so I don’t hate the dub. So to start out you can either begin with the manga which is 12 volumes, or watch the anime. The japanese sub is good in my opinion and the new english dub by VIZ Media with new voice actors is so good! After picking one of these, after you can watch the new Sailor Moon Crystal anime that just came out a couple of years ago in honour of it’s 20th anniversary. The first season, was really bad. Like I heard the guy in charge of it got death threats bad. Which I think that’s taking it too far. The first season of the reboot was trying to use the pointy art style from the manga and failed. Plus the animation had a lot of errors. But it was quick and straight to the point which I liked. The next season got a completely different art style, the theme song was epic and overall much better!
Sailor Moon is broken up into 5 seasons, (first season) Dark Kingdom Arc, (second season) Black Moon Arc, (third season) Mugen/Infinity Arc, (fourth season) Yume/Dream Arc, and (fifth season) Stars Arc. The original english dub in the 90′s only goes up to season 4 and dubbed the movies. So to watch this crazy good season you have to watch it in the japanese dub. VIZ Media is working on dubbing the last season, not sure if it already came out or when it will. For Sailor Moon Crystal, the next story arcs will be made into 2 movies and not as episodes. Also I suggest watching the Sera Myu musicals! They are 31 from the 90′s to now, you can expect great music and weird plot lines not seen anywhere else! Some are online and others are harder to find. There is also PGSM, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon the live action tv show from 2003. There is so much to watch and read!
By the way, technically Sailor Moon is a sequal to Codename: Sailor V which only has two volumes. But it’s so good, I have the first volume from when it was re-released in 2014!
Ok I’ve just reread the question right now after writing a lot. I would describe Sailor Moon as a show that grew up with me. I was a little kid watching tv not expecting to learn lessons on how to be a good person. The plot is funny, there is action, suspense, romance, kinda scary (cause I was a KINDERGARTNER). I think the actual japanese sub was for 12 year olds and the english dub was changed for younger but still. Later on the stakes get higher, the plot gets more complicated and I love how it doesn’t treat the audience as little kids. The story telling is amazing! You can definitely see that in the manga, Naoko Takeuchi the mangaka, is so great at drawing! I suggest searching up her drawings of the characters, she changes their hair colour, she takes a lot of inspiration from designer clothing of the 90′s!
The character development of every single sailor scout is so good! You can see that more in the english dub, cause it takes 200 episodes to get to that point. Season 5, Sailor Stars, is WHOA, one of my favourite seasons ever! The last episode has some nudity, the show gets more serious and there is more to risk. The plot line gets more complex and a lot of plot lines get resolved, the twist and turns is SO GOOD!
You can see the change in Serena/Usagi from a little crybaby, to a strong independent girl who fights for the ones she loves! She is kind, funny, forgiving and she may be bad at school but she is emotionally intelligent! She gives people a chance and this show is very near and dear to my heart!
Sorry for writing a lot... And on my Markiplier blog but oh well!
And Uranus and Neptune are not “cousins”. When you watch a lot of Sailor Moon, this will make sense! ;3

Revisiting Sailor Moon as Pegasus - Kirblog 4/6/19
Animepril 2019 is here! To kick things off, I thought I'd cover one of the world's most influential anime series in history...and one that I've had the tremendous honor of getting to be a part of over the last couple years: Sailor Moon! Since it's been 4 whole years since I last did a Kirblog about the show, I decided to go over my early memories and experiences with it from when it originally aired in the 90's and early 2000's, as well as following when Viz Media's new uncut dub first premiered back in 2014...and then finally speaking on my first-hand experience WORKING on the show as the voice of Pegasus/Helios! This one's sure to be magical and filled with beautiful dreams, so I hope you enjoy it!
Pick up Sailor Moon SuperS on DVD/Blu-Ray, featuring me as the voice of Pegasus! https://www.amazon.com/Sailor-Moon-SuperS-Part-Season/dp/B077TR4T23 https://www.amazon.com/Sailor-Moon-SuperS-Season-Standard/dp/B07GRV89S7
