hi uh, i really enjoy your art and your sewing, I'm even subbed over on youtube, but I jsut wanna say thanks for being you. It's really cool to learn you're trans, and it's revitalizing my desire to get back into historic sewing. I didn't know if or how big the trans communityw as in the recreation sewing, but knowing we're out there in this community too is really assuring. I'm super excited to start working on patterns and styles I haven't been able to do before. Thank you for all you do!
Hello, thank you!! There are quite a lot of trans people who are into historical sewing! I can't think of very many here on tumblr - there's @rowzien who does lovely early 19th century stuff, and I'm sure plenty of trans costuming people will say "same hat!" in the comments of this post.
There are a lot more that I know of on instagram, so I'll just list a bunch off. (I pretty much never look at my instagram feed and don't remember the names of most of the people I follow, let alone their genders, so I likely missed some but ah well.) Some of these are more cosplay, larp, or vintage focused accounts, but there's some sort of sewing and/or costuming on all of them.
jonesyollie (friend who made the timesheet from the previous post!), bequeermakestuff, evilqueenbeecosplays (sadly there aren't many ladies in this post, but I'm sure there are more out there!), ora_lin (they sell patterns!), noodle.stitch, ashlgcostumes (they have a lot of youtube videos and a nice speaking voice), rose_prince_lee, qtcostumer, enby.vintage, kiyoteacups, transcending_time_costuming, slightly_teddy (he's also on tumblr but hasn't posted in ages), angryhistoryguy (he once said in a facebook comment that he has so many transmasc reenactor friends that they could make a Monstrous Regiment), woodsmokeandwords, and marlowelune (SUCH good historical/fantasy everyday clothes, agh! love their wardrobe and illustrations!).
Honourable mention to matthewpcarlsen and dario_princiotta, who haven't put pronouns in their bios and I don't want to speculate on anyone's gender, but it's some good gender juice either way. Matthew pairs a bushy moustache with perfectly fitted Victorian gowns and looks amazing in them, and Dario is really into tightlacing and weird sculptural corsetry.
This is, alas, not a particularly diverse list of people. Like the costuming community at large, it skews towards white and afab, but that does seem to be gradually improving over the years - I certainly see a lot more people of colour doing historical costuming now than I did a decade ago. (I've been into historical sewing since approximately 2010).
As your ask demonstrates, when people don't see themselves represented in a space they're more likely to avoid it/assume it's not for them, which is the entire reason I occasionally mention being trans in my posts!

Kinda feel bad about not drawing much just because I don't have much to post. The truth is that I draw a LOT it's just mostly stuff I can't post right away (comic pages and video artwork/thumbnails), combined with having very little motivation to work on properly finished pieces right now. Sketching heals my weary soul.
Anyway I have 4 sketchbooks now and none of them are finished because Oops
So a few months ago I got a sketchbook and some alcohol markers sent to me as part of a sponsorship. The sketchbook is really nice marker paper and I love it but I have accidentally worked myself into the mindset of "If I draw in this sketchbook it needs to be for marker pieces". Which is silly, because the marker sketchbooks are not that expensive, but that's where my brain is at. The other problem is that this sketchbook is Big which makes it hard to carry around.
A few weeks later I was in a bookstore and saw some Moleskine notebooks. I've scoffed at MS notebooks before because they're really expensive considering the paper quality, but when I checked this most recent time I saw they had a line of smaller, art-specific sketchbooks that supposedly had thicker paper. "Bet", I said, and bought one, even though it came shrink wrapped and I couldn't feel the paper first.
It is heavenly. I love it. The paper is so so thick and smooth and I love every second I spend drawing on it. It's not really thick enough to handle my alcohol markers, but for little sketches with sharpie and brush pens (my favorite <3) it handles amazingly.
I liked having it as a travel sketchbook, but around the time I bought it I was struggling with some Life Stuff and needed somewhere to get the feelings out, so my MS notebook ended up becoming half sketchbook and half diary. And now the problem is that I LOVE drawing in my little MS sketchbook, but it is now filled with Sad Thoughts so I feel like I can't bring it out of the house with me. Or else I run the risk of people seeing the Sad Thoughts.
So THEN I think "Well shit, now I need to buy another mini sketchbook that can be my actual Small Sketchbook To Carry Around With Me (That Does Not Have Sad Thoughts In It), so I bought another, non-Moleskine sketchbook. So I did, and it's... okay. The paper's not AS thick but it's lavender and very cute and has more pages. And I figure "Okay, now the MS notebook can be my journal with some doodles in it, and the purple sketchbook can be the travel book."
BUT THEN I was at the Fancy Bookstore last weekend and got curious about another brand of fancy sketchbooks. They were also shrink-wrapped so I couldn't test the paper for myself, but from the numbers on the packaging it seemed like the paper was a decent weight! And it had some other cool features like numbered pages!
Turns out I got confused because I thought the paper weight was in pounds, turns out it's in grams, and the paper is BAD. SUPER thin and transparent, not even worth being a sketchbook. BUT. It is cute and orange. And it works nicely with some cute little stationery pens I have and like writing with.
So... Now I have my black sketchbook (big, for markers), my Moleskine sketchbook (red, my favorite for sketching but contaminated with Sad Thoughts so it's not allowed to leave the house), my purple sketchbook (travel sketchbook, cute), and orange sketchbook (locked forever in diary purgatory). Someone help that is too many.
(Next time I'm at the bookstore someone might need to physically restrain me from buying another mini Moleskine notebook. I have a PROBLEM!!! And the problem is WHY IS THIS PAPER SO NICE???!?! AGH)
#star talks#I have a sketchbook addiction send helppppp#I hope you guys like my little sketchydoodles#because I'm gonna do a LOT OF THEM

Woahg, thatās a lotā
Explanations under a cut :3
This is Simon like immediately after defeating Dracula. Just sitting on his knees, hands on his face. He needs a minute, but heās not gonna get a long one cause the castle is collapsingā
Wow! What a nice happy family :3. I sure hope nothing happens to them! :3 Iāve always liked to arrange the series of events like first Selena and Simon met and got married, then the Dracula stuff went down, so uh yeah uh fan interpretation of their (currently) unnamed kids.
The text here says āwhereās momma?ā, said by his daughter (who by this point is 2-3 about). Shout out to the artist ability to make yourself really sadā
Just Simon and the kids chillin. He probably was a really good dad, just kinda struggling.
Little quick doodle of the designs of the kids. Agh I need to name both of them (TwT ). Itās hard, I feel like they gotta have nice but cool names, but I just havenāt found any I like yet. Anyway, the one on the left is the older daughter and the one on the right is the younger brother and as of Simonās quest they are 10 and 7 respectively. The brother wouldāve been born the year of CV1 if I have my math right, so when Simon was 22.
Sobbing! It be like that sometimes š. This might count as like one part vent art and one part just expression and emotion practice :O.
This one also kinda counts as vent art I guess lol idk. It says āI did everything rightā. I was thinking of a specific audio while drawing this and tbh I might actually have to animate something hmmm. Or just still images cause animation is hardddddddd oof. The text isnāt like from the audio or anything either (>< ;).
This one is based on an old insert character here kind of meme :D. The text says āstep 1: establish character with a little worry but a lot of determination. Step 2: inflict soul crushing trauma Step 3: inflict soul crushing traumaāā and that repeats until step 5 lol. The original meme only had two images, but each of these are supposed to be based on specific events so yeah. First one is just pre CV1, then the moment he got hit, then shortly after leaving the castle, then in the graveyard 6 years later, then somewhere in the middle of his quest.
This one is fun!!!!!! Itās an idea for like a double sided keychain :D!!!!! One side has the like CV1/CV4 era Simon swinging on one of those loops and the other is Simonās Quest!!! And itās supposed to be the Hanged Man tarot card!!! So cool!!! Idk how making keychains works so if I actually did this Iād probs just make one in shrink plastic tbh. But ough it would be so cool to actually make and sell little fan keychains and stuff (TwT ).
This one I donāt remember if Iāve posted or not but itās never getting finished ššš. Gotta love drawing The Character in increasingly dynamic poses and surreal ways.
Ok itās super late I have to sleep šš

I just want to say thank you so much for making Twig!!!! I have ulcerative colitis and will likely need surgery at some point but have never really been able to be open or proud about it, especially given the toll its taken on my body, so seeing a character whoās not only similar to me but looks super cool and interesting genuinely made my day. I think itās actually the first time Ive seen a character with an ostomy bag, I keep coming back just to look at them <333 Your art is so important to me and I hope you have a happy disability pride month!!!
Iām so so happy to hear that youāre able to connect with and feel represented by Twig! That makes me soā¦ agh! Very happy :)
Iām so sorry youāre going through so much right now, I truly hope that youāll be able to get treatment that can help you feel better.
I was honestly planning to make an OC with an ostomy much sooner, but my own disability had gotten in the way of me drawing for months (and does still often) so it took a while! But twig is now finally feeling like a fully developed character! Woo hoo!
Iām so glad so many disabled people like my art, it beings lightness to my chest, makes me feel fuzzy (in a good way)!
Happy Disability Month! āæļø

H: I'm currently...
H: ...inconceivably nervous.
H: Because I'm on a first d... date... with this guy.
H: Dammit.
H: I can't act like I usually do.
H: I always end up overthinking it.
H: To be honest, not a word he said is registering in my brain.
G: Man, the build-up in the second half of the new Pedoro movie is godlike!
H: It's taking everything in me just to respond.
H: Yeah...
H: ...Geez. The Demon Vice Chief sure is pathetic...
H: Anyway, why is this guy so relaxed?
G: To think that Pedoro would do something like that...
H: His act has not changed a bit from the usual.
H: Hmph. Is he used to this kind of stuff?
H: That carefree attitude pisses me off!
H: ...
H: ...is it just me?
H: Is it just me who's...
[page 2]
*grabs...*
H: Huh??
H: ...Ah.
H: Waiā
H: Wha...
H: Yorozuyaā
H: ...grk.
H: Ack!
H: Dammit!
H: Doesn't even think about how I'm feeling!
G: ...Hijikata-kun, your face is beet red, you know?
H: Shuddup...!
H: I'm not used to this, unlike you!
H: Awful.
H: So it really is just me.
H: I'm the one who's getting so worked up,
H: so high-strung...
H: ...
H: ...Hm?
[page 3]
H: Wait... this guy...
H: Yorozuya.
G: Hm?
H: Your...
H: ...hand is so damn sweaty...
*SHOCK*
G: Huh?
*stares*
H: You... What's with that face you're making?
G: Y-You too, Hijikata-kun!
G: Why would you point it out so bluntly!?
H: ...You were so relaxed until just now, though.
H: Why are you getting so worked up over me just pointing out about your sweaty hand?
H: Your face is beet red.
G: Ugh..Ā Aaagh! Geez!
[page 4]
G: I...
G: I'm nervous, okay!
G: All this time!
G: I'm on a date with someone I like, so of course I'd be!
G: Dammit... I don't look cool at all now! Really...
G: Stupid ass sweaty hands!
H: I see.
H: So it wasn't just me.
H: Heh.
G: Agh!
G: Y-Youāwhat are you laughing about!
H: Being able to put up such a calm front but getting found out by some sweaty hands is just like you.
G: Whaā
H: Besides, if you hadn't held my hand, I wouldn't have noticed your sweaty hands at all.
G: I-I just wanted to hold hands at least once during the date!
G: Is that so bad, bastard!?
H: Oh, really. *ba-dump...*
H: Being like this at our age... How pathetic.
H: Us both.

Haven't been drawing too much because I've been travelling around n stuff, plus the things that I am working on are either comics or a collection of screenshot redraws. But I wanna try to doodle more
Aiming to draw more of the cast in Diverged, bc I wanna talk about their stories!! But I feel like I can't talk about a character & my hcs for them without art!! Agh!!
Also want to establish more about Diverged as a world and how it differs from canon WarioWare (outside of character design) - the world & species of the characters function differently. And I'm super excited to talk about how Orbulon plus Wario & Waluigi's species function, bc I get to talk about their cool ass powers
Also just wanna draw general silly things more- like Mike with his fangs and cable tail, and him being an absolute gremlin (loves climbing atop the fridge and crouching on tables - Crygor just tunes it out now) and stupid fighting between the Wario Bros. And 5-Volt & Doris being scary older sisters to Fronk & Mike, and Spitz with his stupid glasses, and the shenanigans Red & Ashley get into (like hunting the marshmallow alien) and Cricket wrangling Kat&Ana like kittens, and-

Hi again......If you don't mind, can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
OH MY GOD IāD LIKE TO APOLOGIZE BECAUSE MY BAD BECAUSE I LEFT THIS SITTING IN MY DRAFTS AND TOTALLY FORGOT TO ANSWER THIS!! Anyways, top 7, in no particular order:
Hunter x Hunter: Iām not as into this as I was in middle school but itās never left my mind. Definitely my favorite shonen, Togashiās originality with the series is really refreshing. (I also love Yu Yu Hakusho by him!!) As weird as it gets the characters and story are always a blast to follow. The villains also go hard. I finished the 2011 anime and I have up to volume 13 of the manga! Iād love to catch up fully since itās being updated again, but havenāt gotten around to it yet. Itās something that Iāve always been inspired by even if I donāt want to make something thatās gonna be EXACTLY like it anymore lol.
Cowboy Bebop: I tried to limit myself to one (1) Shinichiro Watanabe anime for this list, but his other stuff fucks as well. I love Spike. (bet you never wouldāve guessed!!) Itās hard to put into words in a way that doesnāt sound incredibly dumb. But. Every character introduced has their own unique worldview, backstory, flaws, etc. It sounds so fucking stupid because yeah, thatās what a character is supposed to have?? But this anime does that REALLY well?? I think what Iām trying to say is that the show does a great job of presenting different lifestyles and perspectives without worrying about making the audience uncomfortable. The anime is all about human connections and how they impact the characters and I LOVE that. It was also pretty moving to me, lots of great emotional moments. The episode where they find Fayeās old cassette recording and the one with Grenās death will always stay with me. (Also the Andy one, but only because I think itās funny as hell.) Watanabe is my favorite anime director ever and if you love Bebop I recommend checking out some of his other stuff as well! (Also props to an anime director that isnāt afraid of diversity in his character designs)
Witch Hat Atelier: Iām not nearly as caught up with this as I would like to be but!!! I love the writing, worldbuilding, and characters. I wish more manga were like this. Not like, aesthetically, but like quality wise. Everything is done really well and the art and paneling is GORGEOUS omfg. Also Kamome Shirahama is a very cool and progressive person and itās just nice to read a manga by someone like her. Iām hyped as hell for the anime and canāt wait to see WHA reach a larger audience!! (Even with all the bad stuff it may bring, lmao)
Invader Zim: This one is probably the most different from the rest of the list lol. Iāll rewatch a few episodes of this every once in a while. Itās one of the only shows I watch that actually makes me laugh out loud. I also donāt think Iāve really seen anything else like it??? Sure thereās stuff thatās itās pretty similar to but you cant really say, āwow, this is exactly like ____!ā which is super cool. Thereās not a major character in the show that I can say I hate or even just am neutral on, I love them all. Iām not usually a fan of stuff the gross-out humor it does, especially in the first season, but just about everything else about it just lives in my brain rent free. I think itās a really unique and funny show and I just vibe with it stylistically as well. Seriously, I love the art style and just overall,,, edgy vibe. I absolutely do not care that itās a kidās show and I unironically think itās super cool lmao. I know should probably check out some of Jhonenās other stuff but I havenāt done that yetā¦
The Ace Attorney Trilogy: This one is more so just Shu Takumi in general. Itās a hard choice because I love Apollo Justice as well, and I also considered Ghost Trick (also by Takumi) but Agh!! The trilogy is the most iconic to me so Iām going with that. I just love seeing and interacting with all the unique characters the series has to offer. Iāve always liked how Takumi isnāt afraid to stray away from the generic skinny anime designs for his characters, it makes his characters feel very unique and memorable. He seems to be against having most of his characters be one dimensional, giving them their own struggles and aspirations, regardless of if theyāre a āsillyā character or not. I love it! It makes them more memorable and enjoyable than many other visual novel characters to me. (Please remember that I also love Ghost Trick holy fuck itās so good)
Yakuza 0: Iām going to be 100% for real and admit that I discovered this series because of a bunch of stupid clips I saw of it on YouTube. It wasnāt the dame da ne memes, this was before that. But like, clips of all the silly stuff you can do in game like dance, receive a chicken as a gift for winning at bowling, assign said chicken a position at your real estate business, etc. So I bought it on a whim looking for a laugh. And. Holy FUCK. I did not expect the actual real serious story of this game to hit me as hard as it did. Just a good, moving story. I was THOROUGHLY emotionally invested in both Majima and Kiryuās storylines by like, chapter 2 for both of them. I think it made me cry?? The fact that you can experience both that and the stupid shit, on top of the fun combat, makes it an S tier game for me. I plan to continue with the rest of the series (so far Iāve gotten through Kiwami 1 and 2 and loved them) but 0 has so far been my absolute favorite.
Pokemon: Itās not a perfect series but I always find myself getting back into it for a while every year. Iāve been a fan since I was just old enough to read, what can else can I say? I donāt have a super deep reason for this itās just something thatās always been comfortable and fun!! The worldbuilding, story, music, and characters, really shine through in some of my favorite games in the series. And regardless of story, the gameplay is always fun.
Itās hard for me to determine my favorite anything but for this I tried to go by:
-How often I ended up going back to these
-How much each work made an emotional impact on me (not just the deep stuff, can also include things like making me laugh)
-How much each of these inspired me (like as in inspired my art or made me think āI want to make something like that!!!ā) I think Iāve thought to that at least once for everything in here! Itās actually kind of scary because theyāre all so different-
Iām probably missing something here but this should give you an idea!! If I spend any longer on this Iām just gonna keep changing it lolllll
#ask#Iāve been chipping away at this for like 5 mins every once in a while for like. months#so apologies if I wrote a lot lolll#but this person asked me to yap and yap I shall#literally how did I end up writing so much about invader zim

askgame: undertale aus
ohhhhhmg i love the undertale aus so so much. People are so??? creative??? I like all the different ideas that people have with things and the ways that people will reinterpret the characters to fit a new story. its very cool to me!
I like seeing all of the different little and big details that people will change, and also the designs of course. I really really like character design and I really like seeing how people will design the characters to fit their AU!
Undertale AUs that focus on single characters are so good and AUs that focus on entire story overhauls are so good and AUs that focus on just tone or design shifts are so good i just agh<222 the creativity and just the fun that people have with it is so good! I like seeing people have fun that's almost always a good thing to me
I like to see people playing around with experimenting with things like they're playing in a sandbox. Fandom is largely for having fun after all, and creating AUs is just very much that ! I think I made one or two in my notebooks back when I was super big into the fandom, too, and figuring stuff out for them was musi tawa mi:}
I personally really like Underfell due to it being one of the first AUs i engaged with making my own stuff for it (mostly roleplays lol, and old sketchbook art). And Handplates, for its take on the characters as well as it being one of the first fancomics that I actually followed while it was still running and got to see the end of (plus, it was actually one of my motivations in getting a tumblr account in the first place)
#hello people in my phone#felixlupin.txt#Undertale AUs are just. so fun. thank you for giving me the chance to be silly abt undertale aus :D#Twiggy š#tumblr games <2

hi guyz !! im makin a bit of a different post today. i wanted to share some album/ep covers that ive been thinking about recently cuz album art is so cool + i love all of these artists dearly. enjoy my rambles :D
Sign - Nobukazu Takemura (2000)
my pfp !!!! i discovered the title track sign from the album hoshi no koe, but this is the record it originally debuted in! takemura is a japanese electronic musician who makes a lot of experimental music, and this album is no different. however, it has sort of a.. nintendo vibe to it? itās difficult to describe, but itās super fun !! i love the album art as well and the rhythmic motion of the building. the little music note guy has my whole heart too, theyre jus a little goober <3
Paraiso - Haruomi Hosono and The Yellow Magic Band (1978)
i wouldve put this in yellow but there is no option. anywayz this is a interesting album. ive recently started listening to hosonoās music and i enjoy it a lot !!! hosono house is fire, but this one is also good ! the cover art is what initially led me to listening to this, i love the beach atmosphere and the sky as space. and the little bubbles that have random monuments in them. and the palm trees n plants and agh. itās delightfully surreal and im here for it !!!
S-F-X - Haruomi Hosono (1984)
look hosono youāre awesome and i love your early stuff so far. but i could not get into this ep at all. might try again tho !! but itās really a shame because the cover is awesome. i love the distortion on the face and the pops of pink and yellow against the teal background. itās very pleasing to look at and itās been floating in my mind for awhile. very futuristic lookin !
Sail - Masakatsu Takagi (2003)
I AM THE ULTIMATE TAKAGI FAN #1 anyway. this album is so so lovely and silly. it has a special place in my heart now fr. the best way to describe it is animal crossing/picopop(??) type music. some of it reminds me of kero kero bonitoās music too. idk genres are weird !! point is itās very upbeat and nostalgic. a few tracks are more somber sounding, especially rama. but i love the album art of this one, itās like something youād see in a dream or a childhood memory. i love the watercolor texture and the blend of pastel colors too!! and how it looks as if it was combined from multiple layers, as in each piece of the figure was made separately. overall takagi is a genius and this album SLAPS
Keep It Unreal (10th Anniversary) - Mr. Scruff (2009)
mr. scruff makes very cheeky and silly electronic music, but occasionally he drops an absolute banger. nah fr all of his stuff is good, some of it is just more āseriousā than others. but i appreciate his sense of humor and the beats he makes ! this album of his is a great listen, but i especially love the cover. the og album cover is mounted up in the corner while these little bean guys are celebrating. truly a work of art. his other album ninja tuna also shares a similar art style !! very goofy <3
A Wizard, a True Star - Todd Rundgren (1973)
do i gotta say anything even. this is just a masterpiece of a cover. there is so much going on in the best way possible. i love the incorporation of the geometric shapes. the trippy visuals. it screams 70s. not to mention this album is fire. international feel is so good !!!
Desire, I Want to Turn Into You - Caroline Polachek (2023)
PHOTOGRAPHY JUMPSCARE ! i recently go into caroline polachek and OML where have you been all my life. this album is pure pop bliss and her vocals are so so good. sunset and fly to you are especially good oug. the album cover in particular is very simple in concept but itās executed so well. the lighting, the sand, the bus chairs, her outfit?? absolutely stunning. this woman oozes creativity fr.
Dreams - Gabor Szabo (1968)

Advance Guardian Heroes
Ah, here it is. Advance Guardian Heroes. Despite its numerous faults, this is in my top 3 GBA games, alongside Sonic Advance 2 and Pokemon Emerald. Seriously, this game had a massive impact on me. Iām talking about staying up all night trying to draw like this. To this day, I struggle to capture the magical essence of Tetsuhiko Kikuchiās (aka HANās) art style, but a LOT of his design philosophies bled into my own growing up. And while I believe weāre in a beat-em-up game renaissance now, I remember this being the only āmodernā one I f*cked with for a while. Thanks primarily in part to being made by the legendary game developers Treasure. Seriously, when it comes to making fun games, they donāt miss. Iām basically gonna spend my time gushing about it. I will also point out its very glaring flaws, haha. I started this blog to dive deep into why I like the things I like, after all. Iām hoping to have a better understanding by the end of this!
PRESENTATION
Iām really particular when it comes to art style. Iām not elitist about what others should like or dislike, but I have written things off because I dislike how they look. Everyone has their tastes; thatās not groundbreaking info. AGH is absolutely in the realm of what I love, though. The art direction has this late 80s/90s anime look that I really adore. I donāt draw like that at all, but when I look at it, it reminds me of when anime was an extremely new thing to me. Some faces skew toward that How-to-Draw-Manga territory, but I love it. It hasā¦ an identity.
The game itself translates this very well with the sprites. I think part of Treasureās gameās strength wasnāt just in their mechanics but their animation and design sense. Itās one thing to have a heavy punch attack, but when the sprites accurately convey that, you really feel it, even through your little game boy.
The anticipation, line of action, OOF. It feels so good when you pull this off, and your enemy goes flying.Ā
This game had neat ideas, too. My favorite, FAVORITE one they have is the stage where debris is falling, and you get to fight while trying not to fall out of bounds. It could be a hassle, but the game has a mechanic where you air dash to get onto the nearest platform. You can get back to one, even if youāve exhausted all your animations from attacking. It takes all the frustration/difficulty away from you and leaves you with a unique stage hazard.
I love a LOT of the stages in this game, and they all have such cool gimmicks for a beat-em-up. One stage starts with you riding a damn missile (youāre in control btw. You have to hop from missile to missile.) to get to the enemy airship youāre about to destroy. Another stage has you surfing on your ship down a river, where you fend off goblin riders and then an actual ninja. Iām telling you, if thereās a rule of cool, Treasure defined it.Ā
Only an ancient hero can make an entrance like that. Honestly, the gameās a treat for the eyes. In my opinion, itās one of the best-looking games for the GBA. And you can trust me, Iāve played less than a quarter of the GBA library.Ā
GAMEPLAY
Hereās where we run into some of the gameās faults. Iāll start by saying the game isnāt broken. Itās functional where it counts. The problem is the immense slow-down when youāre playing. :( Iāll always be a little sad that this got stuck on a Gameboy and not, like, the Gamecube. The original Guardian Heroes was on the Sega Saturn, ran smooth, AND looked good. The little GBA struggled so hard with this gem. But otherwise, I really enjoy the mechanics. I still play the game to this day, and I believe itās because they nailed the fighting. Iām not going to talk specifics about the gameplay because Iām not a game critic, but I will talk a little bit about how it feels.
This game scratched an itch I had at the time for a good DBZ beat-em-up. Your character can shoot out all types of magic attacks, has a hyper mode that flashes golden (super saiyan), and can even parry attacks if youāre good at timing your blocks. This helped the combat feel a lot more in-depth. They used a currency to level up your characterās stats in the single-player mode. Leftover points could be used for unlocking characters. And thatās another thing; From the nameless soldiers to the little goblins with clubs, to the giant robots with city-ending lasers, to every damn boss except the final one, They ALL can be selected. And not just in VS mode. (Yes, it had a vs mode. No, I never played it. Nobody but me owned this game.) But in STORY MODE as well (except for the city-ending robot, I think they said no to that one for obvious reasons.) That leads to a ridiculous amount of replayability for a kid with 3 GBA games. I love games that let you do this. My favorite character to play was Dylan, because he had the coolest moveset.Ā
This is the face of a guy that knows heās the best character in the game.
There was also a mechanic I thought was interesting, even if it was kind of useless lol. If your character ever died, the devil (thatās what I called it, but itās just the big bad) would ask you if you wanted to come back to life and fight. Youād only get six minutes of immunity before theyād take your soul, and youād get an instant game over. Itās a neat idea but really impractical, haha. I wonder if it could be used better today with roguelike gamesā¦? If I were given this deal and thought I could complete a run in 6 minutes, thatād be cool. It would be even more cool if I got a different ending this way. I think in AGH, even if you did make it to the end within six minutes, the Big Bad would kill you on the spot. Fact-check me on that, tho.
STORY
Manā¦ this is where the game really falls short. The biggest issue was the poor translation. The story continued where the original left off; was it the bad ending?Ā
Hereās what Wikipedia says (lol I'm sorry, Itās easier to paste than rewrite it.)
āThe story follows the events of Guardian Heroes. After the Undead Hero was returned to his rest, the heroes were given the option of becoming the Sky Spirit's perfect warriors. The group was divided, with Nicole, Serena, and Valgar joining the Sky Spirit, and Han and Genjiro refusing. Randy escaped back to earth on his own, leaving Han and Genjiro to fight a losing battle against their former comrades.
Years later, Zur returns. He resurrects Kanon and uses the power of the Guardian Heroes to take over the world. The few remaining resistance forces call upon the power of the Undead Hero once again, with one young soldier giving up his body to serve as its vessel.
Throughout the game, the character fights the previous heroes and earns their power. Ultimately, it is revealed this is another attempt by the heavens to create the ultimate warrior. In the final battle against the ruler of the heavens, all heroes gather to defeat it and subsequently leave for the Other World.ā
I donāt hate this!! But itās told very poorly. Weāre not given cutscenes to flesh out anything or anyone. Some characters are only portraits. For example, the player is the young soldier, but once their body gets taken by the hero, they donāt talk again. I didnāt know anything about them. We also donāt really see the resistance fighting Zur and Kanon. Itās basically just us, with some casual assists via dialogue boxes. Honestly, itās not really worth talking about much more, haha. I always thought it had potential if it was fleshed out. Thatās why I would make up my own story as I played. I would fill in the blanks and re-imagine the scenarios.
For example, the game starts with the young soldier getting into a fight before receiving the power of the undead hero. They show how weak you are, having you die in one hit by random goons before the princess pulls the undead heroās soul into your lifeless body. (Like, wow, this soldier sucked. RIP tho.) If you choose Enn as your starting character, he gets recolored, and youāre strong enough to fight. Yipee!Ā
My made-up story was that something went wrong with the princessā spell, and instead of being a fabulous, powered-up man, you turned into a goblin. (Because remember, you can play as almost every damn character in the game.) I imagined the princessās bewilderment as a little chubby goblin said, āHey! Undead hero, here! Letās do this.ā before single-handedly destroying the entire evil empire. It was funny to me!
And I think thatās ultimately what I got from reminiscing about this gameās poor plot. Games used to be a lot simpler. And translation wasnāt always top-notch like it is now. When I was younger, maybe out of necessity, I used my imagination to fill in the blanks. When I played Pokemon, Iād pretend I was truly on a journey with my little guys. And when I fought Red in Gold and Silver, I imagined how epic that was. I drew moments from Sonic games. Playing outside, Iād pretend I was Link on an adventure. My sister and I would play Super Bomberman 1P mode together, and since she was new to it, Iād call her rookie. That dynamic ultimately bled into my Brothers Boom comic. (This is a revelation I had pretty recently, and Iām surprised I buried it so deep into my mind.) Now, as an adult, where my imagination is a bit harder to conjure up because my head isnāt as empty, I reminisce about the times when everything inspired me. Iām not miserable, though, lol. Instead, I think fondly about those times. I really gotta hand it to Treasure because they live up to their namesake. Playing Advance Guardian Heroes was a significant source of inspiration for me, and Iām glad I found it.
Thanks for reading!
