Robot characters who are given names like SL-308-62 but instead of their human friend going Well let's call you Sally for short, they instead ask the other if they Like their current name.
"Do you like your serial number?" they ask. "Yes, quite. It reminds me of who I am" the robot replies. "I have heard others like me go by different names after some time, and maybe one day I'll choose one for myself, too. But right now that is my full name, yes" they continue.
Because it's not your decision to make whether or not the robot will receive a new name. It should be theirs only. What's the difference? One is more complex and the other is simplified. They were both given by strangers instead of themselves.
"62 will do," they conclude. "It's my model number - there will be no other 62 after me."

Okay this is a huge step towards my goals. What it looks like is just a servo randomly moving but what you can't see in the background is an esp32 receiving a stream from my phone which is connected to an EEG headband. Specifically this is tracking gamma brain waves. The lower the number the less I'm actively thinking. There's a very long road ahead before I'm ready to integrate this into my ears and tail, but this is the first step, and since I'm not a software doggy, it's a big step. Next steps will be to capture the raw data and implement floating point average and servo smoothing to get a more consistent "animation" then it's just up to me to train my brain on how to make it do it's thing.

A first-ever stretchy electronic skin could equip robots and other devices with the same softness and touch sensitivity as human skin, researchers report. The e-skin opens up new possibilities to perform tasks that require a great deal of precision and control of force and solves a major bottleneck in the emerging technology. Existing e-skin technology loses sensing accuracy as the material stretches, but that is not the case with this new version. “Much like human skin has to stretch and bend to accommodate our movements, so too does e-skin,” says Nanshu Lu, a professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering’s aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics department and lead author of the paper published in the journal Matter.

I think Emu likes dragging Nene along for "shopping sprees" completely unprompted and without warning, as to ensure Nene doesn't have a lot of money on her at the time and they just end up window shopping most of the time, talking about what they would like to buy but not actually getting it. And then after they part ways Emu writes down all the things she remembers Nene wanted and buys them in between some periods of time to "randomly" gift her out of nowhere
Neen has caught onto this at some point and was at first a bit guilty, but then she always sees how much Emu likes spoiling her and buying her things, especially since she has a lot of money to spare, so she doesn't stop her. Instead she always gets Emu something small she can afford that Emu commented she wants during the shopping sprees

This Friday Molly got to meet a robot! The local junior high robotics team dedicated some time to come to the nursing home where I work so the patients could see their robot and learn about how it works! Me and my coworkers agreed it was a great opportunity for Molly to learn how to function around unexpected things, she did VERY well considering you don't see robots everyday. The team was nice enough to let me get a photo of the bot with Molly, and she thoroughly enjoyed watching it wander around the floor (I let her watch the bot for awhile since it was a new experience and expecting her to focus right away was just completely unrealistic). She was able to effectively task and listen to commands even while watching her environment which is exactly what I hoped for. Great job Molly!

Making a pinned post just to say a few things:
Okay hi yes hello I'm Olive, or Olive for short. Posts will be a combination of maker content, horny posting, and gender things. Don't ask me what my gender actually is, the government seized it so just use it/it's pronouns for me. All of my maker/hardware hacker/cool robot stuff will be tagged with #oliveprojects and my daily build log will be tagged with #Olive build log
That's all for now folks

A new material that moves like skin while preserving signal strength in electronics could enable the development of next-generation wearable devices with continuous, consistent wireless and battery-free functionality, researchers report. The researchers developed the material by embedding clusters of highly dielectric ceramic nanoparticles into an elastic polymer. The material was reverse-engineered to not only mimic skin elasticity and motion types, but also to adjust its dielectric properties to counter the disruptive effects of motion on interfacing electronics, minimize energy loss, and dissipate heat.

I’m finding myself finally understanding robo vore/endo but in very niche situations.
Like imagine a daycare worker or an attendant of some kind to this entertainment animatronic. They work with kids so they’re always exhausted lol. The animatronic is like twice the size of them and sentient. They get along fine, though it’s not really understood how sentient the animatronic is.
The animatronic is nice to the worker and vice versa bc it’s in their nature but it’s really just assumed that the animatronic is following programming to keep kids content and all that jazz. the worker finds it uplifting none the less.
And like, for some reason or another, the attendant ends up in their stomach/chest hatch. Maybe for a safety lockdown, maybe to fix something, maybe because the kids were finally too damn much and they couldn’t take it that day, they were prone to falling asleep standing and the animatronic took charge.
And this was supposed to be a normal, albeit uncommon thing. It’s professional. It’s a safety procedure even.
But the worker finds themselves closed into the robot that has been kind to them, that is literally programmed to be charming, likeable. And they find themselves tuning into the whirrs and clicks of machinery, And they find it….. comforting??? Pleasant?? It might be freaky being at the mercy of machines but it was pleasant being so close. This was their co-worker… their friend? The more time they spend in there the more they realize that yes, these interactions are real and alive. Maybe the animatronic and worker are chatting while this is all going down, and that conversation really hammers it in. They’re inside a kind caring and strong robot who thinks highly of them. They’re the closest they can be.
And the robot, Who now currently has the only adult human that treats them like a person, is stunned. They’ve had other maintenance workers in there from time to time, and it didn’t really matter at all. Not good or bad. Now, this human, who they genuinely care about, is quite literally protected by the robot’s thick layers of metal and machine. The human is protected by something way way way more durable. it can feel it’s power have to work just a little harder to compensate for that weight, their joints moving just a bit slower. And the robot feels a sense of pride. The robot finds something that drives it outside of its programming. The worker.
