So I looked up how the smartgurlz dolls work and so like, what you do is download an app, and you can connect to the little scooter through bluetooth right? Then you program it to do things and it does them. It's supposed to teach kids coding. That sounds cool.
Okay. Except.
You can't download the app anymore. -_-
It's still technically on the play store, but it's not supported anymore. So now the program's too old, and not compatible with anything I have.
The last post on their youtube page was 5 years ago. This doll was still presumably being sold then, and it's main gimmick has already become unusable. In 5 years. This doll cost $109 new on their site and it's already abandon-ware.
This is why I don't collect electronic toys man.

Doll History: Smart Gurlz
Company: SmartGurlz
Designer: Sharmi Kneller
Debuted: 2018
History
SmartGurlz was described as the world's first line of self-balancing coding robots for girls. Their purpose was to inspired girls to participate in STEM. The dolls have an app that allows users to challenge themselves through programming missions.
The doll line had appeared on Shark Tank, S09E10, and was recommended by the Girl Scouts of America and BlackGirlsCode. Their Mission Statement states: SmartGurlz™ Inspires the female leaders of tomorrow, today. Our mission is to create the creators of the future, one girl at a time.
Kneller explained that the concept came about after she bought her child a robot and noticed she wasn't overly interested in the toy as it wasn't targeted towards young girls. She set out to create a robot that was more oriented towards females. She later showed the doll line at the Las Vegas' Consumer Electronics Show. While there, a Shark Tank producer took noticed and eight months Kneller pitch the idea to the Sharks Tank cast. Only Daymond John was willing to hand over cash, Kneller bartered with the entrepreneur and the two eventually settled on $200,000 for 25% equity.
Kari Byron from 'MythBusters' served on board as the Chief Creative Officer in 2018 but left at 2020.
Considering that Kari left the company, the designer focusing on a new business of a cafe serving plant-based coffee, and many of the company's social media was deactivated by 2021, the brand is considered to have been discontinued.

Three of the dolls were sold on the official website. The last two were sold on other retailer websites.

I guess Kurhn dolls are coming stateside under the name SmartGurlz? Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad bc I love the Kurhn sculpt, but I was super taken aback when I looked them up because someone said they “look sort of like Kurhn dolls” but there’s no “sort of” about it, they’re just straight-up the same sculpt AND faceup
#the company that's marketing them as Smartgurlz made two new skintones and they're really great so props to them actually!#toys

Thrift finds.
I have actually been trying to avoid thrifts rn to erase the temptation to buy things, but my dad wanted to go + I got a generous Christmas gift of $50 a few days ago and I slipped up.
On the plus side my dad checked my stuff out to get me the senior discount, so all of this was only like $10.
And now it's out of my system no more thrifting until next payday.
That spiel out of the way, I am very excited! I will put further ranting under the cut!!
A SmartGurlz/Kurhn doll!!! I think I saw one post about these a year-ish ago maybe?? Never thought I'd see one on person.
Draculaura was in a grab bag with the other MH clothes. Was thrilled to see the Iris outfit, I passed on I<3Fashion Iris since I managed to get her SDCC doll thanks to a friend, but I always loved this look.
I'm debating on whether to customize Ula or just clean her up. She's got glue head, but also she's fairly complete and doesn't have wonk.
And other cute rainbow surprise unicorn. I love the dragonfly wings!!!
This is the 5th AG doll I've found this year, and the third one by the pleasant company, not a modern Mattel. While a nice find, Who is donating all these AG dolls. I've gone years never seeing a single AG in a thrifts so it's a little strange to see such an influx.
Also, her outfit? I'm 99% certain it's from one of the 18" Kelly dolls they made in like, the late 90's. It has a barbie tag so I don't know what else it would be.
And finally B-A-B Fluttershy. I see B-A-B ponies fairly often at my local thrifts, but usually pass I for the most part I usually prefer G1s, and try to limit how many plushies I have in general. Fluttershy is the only exception bc for some reason, despite barely having ever watched MLP: FIM, I really love Fluttershy. She's so cute. I have only a handful of G4 stuff, but 90% is Fluttershy (the other 10% is Chrysalis lol).
Gonna be fun to fix all this up. c:

"After SmartGurlz aired on Shark Tank, my inbox became inundated with all kinds of opportunities. I have written my two major goals for the company on a Post-it note that is stuck to my monitor. If a request comes in that does not support those, I force myself to down-prioritise them or even say 'no.' Keep your focus and move on to more productive tasks. Leveling the playing field for women in tech is vital for emerging industries
When I hear about the need to push gender diversity in tech and improve gender disparity in the industry, it takes me a second to appreciate the full reality of the situation.
When the industry’s playing field is devised and maintained mostly by men, it leaves women at an inherent disadvantage. The bias is hardwired into the very building blocks of the system, making it hard for men, who enjoy the upside of that same bias, to see the problem.
It’s not a conspiracy, but an error on the part of the architects who don’t realize that diversity has to be invited to the room from the very beginning. Otherwise, the whole platform will be built on elements that estrange itself from diversity without even realizing it.
Let’s take wearables as an example.
“It comes down to the psychology of wearable tech products since I think many of them are a problem for a solution, rather than a solution for a problem,” Marija Butkovic, co-founder at Women of Wearables (WoW), told…
