STEM Camp Fundraiser

So my girl child was invited to NYLF: Explore STEM camp this summer! As you can imagine, this is not a cheap camp lol. I am trying to raise a bit for her to lighten the load. She is extremely excited to go and we want her to have the best time. If you guys can, please consider donating. I’m pretty staunchly a pen and paper kinda guy, even though my handwriting isn’t the neatest. I think writing things down on paper helps me retain things much better than if I were to type it up, and I find that they’re easier to refer to.

As for getting things to stick, changing my notes into Anki cards is the way to go!

One of the many hills I’ll die on is my defense of the Girl Scouts if you hear the “girl” in Girl Scouts and immediately assume “well, clearly all they’re teaching them is how to bake cookies and manage a household and become a good wife and mother who stays home and cooks and cleans” then that shits on you yeah some troops aren’t going to be as good as others it all depends on the leadership and resources available but that doesn’t negate the fact that at it’s core it is there to teach young girls valuable skills and it can provide unique opportunities and a nice community for people who may need it

milka's unchecked internalized misogyny is such a great and overlooked aspect of her character. it stemmed from being bullied and isolated and taking back control as someone who learns the secrets of others. she makes sure kitty knows she's watching. she openly threatens lili because of elton's prior obsessive affection for her (as for his obsessive affection, it's not like elton *meant* to be obsessive - for a kid his age, it fits his character as someone who crushes hard). for milka, there are definitely annoying boys, but she appears to be willing to give them more of a chance (in the case of boys she likes), or at least, she's more subtle in her accusations like asking clem why he's getting drain-o. she definitely knows why.

growing up with an unfit mother, who actively berates and sobs when she sees her daughter's face, who also reminds her of her father, is such a compelling backstory. she likes her mother, likes being with her, but it can only work if she's invisible. her mother was hurt by her father in some regard, whether it was just abandoning the family or worse, and for milka, she is made to grow up in the shadows, seeking affection from those honest. her love for elton is pure, but if anyone tries to intervene, especially a girl, her claws are out. she's assertive and sinks in her claws just as much as kitty, but milka's more open hostility to girls who have gone against her just adds such a nice negative attribute to her otherwise silently confident

Hi! I’ve been perusing my council’s camp guide since I’ll be a unit leader (and therefore doing more programming than I’ve done in the past) and apparently we’re doing a Brownie stargazing program? Which sounds fun until you consider the fact that stars are barely visible even two hours after Brownie bedtime. I know you’ve done astronomy programming, so I was wondering if you had any ideas on how to make that work?

Stargazing with Brownies, an adventure by anyone's standards. When I've done astronomy programming with Brownies, it's been with adults, and I don't have to manage the next day beyond breakfast, if at all. But camp is a bit different. Here are a few tips off the top of my head:

Have a rest hour or two earlier in the day and take it easier in preparation. Avoid doing strenuous activities that will tire the kiddos out.

Bring snacks! Nobody wants a hangry Brownie. Plus the little energy boost will help them stay up late.

Since you probably can't sleep in (and littles often don't sleep in anyway), schedule nap time the next day. Offer other quiet activities to kids that don't want to sleep. Your camp may even have this built in.

Let campers who can't stay up go to bed. It is not worth trying to force a Brownie to stay up late if they don't want to. Just plan for staffing with this one.

Do as much bedtime prep in advance. Stargazing in PJs with teeth brushed after a snack? Stargazing right in the unit where it's 30 seconds to sleeping bags? Sounds great. Just don't get dirty.

Be prepared to manage big emotions for little people the next day, because they will be tired. You may even get some of this in the evening.

Practice good self care yourself, as you're also losing sleep.
