Something that is sad but also that I hugely appreciate about CK is that by the end, most of the systems that harmed the crows are still in place, but their relationships with themselves have grown and changed. I find this particularly interesting in the cases of Jesper and Wylan (shocking I know). Their identities still put them in danger of being exploited or harmed - Grisha indentures are still the norm in Kerch, and the auction scene made it very clear that if the Council knew Wylan's illiteracy was true, they would treat him much the same as his father did due to the culture surrounding productivity and ability. This might seem disheartening, but the hope lies in the shift in how these characters see themselves and their role in the world. By the end of the book, Jesper and Wylan are beginning to put away their internalized shame surrounding their identities. They may still have to hide who they are from the world to survive, but they're no longer hiding it from themselves - their true selves are no longer this crushing burden they have to turn away from to function. A general theme of the series is how, in accepting who they are and what has happened to them on a personal level, the crows place themselves in positions to make change on a systemic level - Inej and her ship, Nina and her mission, Kaz and his Barrel empire, Wylan and Jesper with their political, high-society empire. None of them are all the way there yet by the end - they're still healing, and both the loss of Matthias and the weight of those oppressive systems are going to weigh on them for a long time - but we get to see the very beginnings of that process. I'm going to bite someone.

I keep thinking about this line from ck.

this is the culmination of the van eck job; the 'post-credits' scene that tells us where each of the characters is going forward. nina is 'going to find a way to make it matter', which teases row. inej is starting her journey of ending slavery on the seas. jesper and wylan's futures are explicitly intertwined and implicitly turning to politics.

what does kaz's line mean? what was leigh trying to foreshadow?

I refuse to believe the phrasing of it means nothing, because in the context of this scene, it can't mean nothing. this is kaz's next big journey. and it also references another big conversation from ck:

this scene from the geldrenner bathroom is so important because, in it, inej confronts kaz with the truth of his revenge arc (which essentially drives the plot of the entire duology): how is the person he became to ruin pekka different from pekka himself?

and again, kaz mentions building an empire and burning it.

so it has to have meaning. is it literal? will a big plot point in soc #3 involve kaz setting fire to the barrel? but if that's the case, why is it significant that he rebuilds it into something new beforehand?

or maybe it's figurative. at the very end of ck inej asks kaz to help her end slavery from his side of things in ketterdam. she mentions taking down the crooked politicians, the slave-owners, the... even less-moral barrel bosses. while it seems obvious that kaz's 'new empire' is a barrel under his control, what would become of a criminal empire under the thumb of a man indirectly helping to destroy it? perhaps it figuratively 'burns to the ground'.

so either kaz builds his empire, and then literally burns it to achieve something else, or kaz builds his empire and uses its own power to 'burn it' by helping something cleaner grow instead. maybe that's the connection to the bathroom conversation: maybe it's the way he finally proves himself to be different from pekka.

or maybe it's neither of those, and I'm completely off-base? either way it has to mean something big, and I would honestly love to hear more interpretations.

Been thinking about SOC3 & the Council of Tides + the idea that they live in hidden fabrikator made underwater structures that only they can access. Kaz getting involved due to threats, being very nervous about being under so much water with only their promise he's safe, for now.

cb its mid august, literally almost six months to the DAY shadow and bone s2 was released and STILL no clear yes or no to the spin-off or a s3 like that's just criminal 😭

The first time I read Crooked Kingdom I really believed that Matthias didn't die, HE COULD NOT HAVE DIED because my best friend told me that no one died in SOC and if someone died she would have already accidentally told me (also, she theorized a lot about a possible deaths in SOC3 if Leigh ever does that book, always telling me that no crow died in SOC) and I thought "oh yeah, if someone died she would be devastated so it makes sense yeah yeah no one dies."

AND UNTIL CHAPTER 41 I STILL BELIEVED THAT MATTHIAS WAS ALIVE EVEN THOUGH HIS DEATH HAD BEEN SPOILED TO ME A MONTH BEFORE (Instagram always spoiling me everything…) BECAUSE I TRUSTED HER!!! Chapter 40 was very confusing for me because, thinking that Matthias wasn't dead, I didn't understand much of the context until I texted her "oh, I really don't understand what's going on, is Matthias okay?" and she told me "no, love, he's dead. I lied. But I hope you can continue with your life after this."

I'm still heartbroken over this and even two years later I still think Matthias is alive and living his best life with Nina and Hanne. I don't care about canon because canon never cared about me.

If we do get a Soc3(which I’m not sure about) we need the old gang to be together again but now they also have Nikolai and Zoya and Nina brought Hanne with her.

If we are getting a SOC3, I really do want to see the Jesper Kaz relationship outside of Kaz being angry at Jesper and punishing him. I want to see the bestie moments. I want to see Jesper angry with Kaz. I want to see them joke around, fight and make up, save each other. Jesper was able to move on from his unrequited crush on Kaz with Wylan (which is what he deservesss), and Kaz showed his hand with how much he really cares for Jesper in CK, but I still want a sense of reconciliation between the two, after the years of hurt caused by Kaz's distance and casual cruelty.

A Defense of SX3 Azula

Intro

So I've seen this typing for a loooong time already and honestly I've been coming around to it allot recently. And see if Azula is either a SOC3 or an SX3.

Why SOC3 (and why not)

While Azula portrays many of the E3 traits I believe that this typing is usually done by only looking at E3 traits not SOC3 traits. The social 3 believes that there is a place for them to belong. The LOOK (they can have or look for) status. How does this apply to Azula??? well it kinda does tbh. Azula is interested in the social opinion of others and is heavily interested in the push of the fire nation upon others. However wouldn't most of these things come with the princess territory? but is status Azura's true desire?

Why SX3 (and why not)

If I were to pinpoint Azusa's core desire in the series it would be parental validation but through the means of what? well in Azusa's case I think SX3 suits her better than SOC3. The SX3 looks to fill a slot in someone's life. In Azura's case she wants to fill the slot of Ozai's right hand girl. Unlike the SX2 the SX3 NEVER relinquishes their own desire to please the other. Which is why she adopts traits that her father has. His wishes are hers and crave for status seems almost complexity secondary to her desire to please her father.

Distinguishing SX3 vs SO3

For example to distinguish a E3 SX/SO over a E3 SO/SX let's look at Azula (3w4 SX/SO) vs Maergery Tyrell (3w2 SO/SX)

SX3 As mentioned above the SX3 looks to fill in a slot in someones life in which they can find their own purpose of being through adopting the object of desire's desire. They have their own needs and look to further others ambitions rather than the self. Healthy SX3 can become good mentors looking to help other rise of the top. In the case of Azula through furthering her fathers needs. SOC3 The SOC3 is purely about self marketing the SOC3 cares to be best at something and prove themselves to the grand. They dont further others ambitions other than their own. Healthy SOC3 take on a leader role to bring others up to part. In the case for Margery Tyrell through furthering her own needs to be queen.

Conclusion

I think ive come completely around to this typing I usually thought that 3w4 so/sp was the better typing however ive come around to SX3 as the more accurate one. However tell me your thoughts in case i got anything wrong.

Confession: I watched Season One of Shadow & Bone before reading the books (I didn’t know there were books until I finished it! Thus accidentally breaking my “books first” traditional rule). However, I actually think this improved my love of the books as I came in with the show version of Mal & (fan-cast come to life) chemistry of Ben Barnes as the Darkling (minus the spoiler of knowing his name was Alexsander & he was not to be trusted). The added diversity & “fixes” gave me a very different viewpoint & understanding heading in. And I pretty much binge read them (only disappointed in the lack of crows as I surprisingly avoided spoilers outside of the first book).

I of course love our sankta Alina Starkov, & despite popular opinion Mal Oretsev (Malina holds my heart). I enjoyed the ending to the 1st Trilogy, and the found family with Misha & my all time fav OnCat. — Hence the blog name & my favorite quote of the books & one of all time — “They had an ordinary life, full of ordinary things— if love can ever be called that.”

I did love Alexsander NOT the Darkling; though I did ship Darklina for a while; I blame Ben & Jessie😂 to be clear, however, I DO NOT CONDONE ANY OF THE ABUSE THE DARKLING CREATES

Genya Safin is very dear to me & her story/quotes meant a great deal to me. Daisy Head’s interview speech of “taking space” is one of my favorites. I will forever be a “David Lives” truther😅😭

Inej Ghafa is also the same, her story, her character, her quotes, her ship… ALL. OF. IT. Amita & Freddy. Kaz Brekker… representation!!! Kanej… do I need to say more?

Nina Zenik is a queen, Helnik was an ALWAYS & it ALWAYS destroys me💔Matty, but I’m glad Hanina found a happy ending. Nina’s journey through grief came when I needed it most… she represents many things that were beautifully done.

Wylan Van Sunshine is bb & must be protected at all costs same with Jack (our lil wolf). Wesper will always be endgame. Jesper Fahey is a style icon & that word also applies to Kit.

Zoya Nazyalensky is a severely under appreciated character in my opinion, and one I am thankful to see as a heroine in fiction! Zoyalai is a favorite🎀 as is our Privateer Nikolai Lantsov + another style icon ;-) + (his & Mal’s TV bromance *chefs kiss*) — Speaking of show additives a moment for: Fedyor x Ivan👌👌😘😘🥹
