“Has it escaped your notice,” she said with a gesture, “that we're not in fucking Fereldan any more?”

“It's not the same,” he said peevishly. “Anyway, I know she's a mage.”

Murder was once more a possibility, it seemed. “Merrill? No, I shouldn't think so. I'd have noticed a thing like that.”

“And your healer friend.”

“Is a very good healer. Skilled with potions.”

“Hawke,” said Cullen, “he was at Kinloch Hold.”

“He has one of those faces.”

“I know you're a mage.”

She cackled, startling a grazing nug underground. “What gave it away?” she asked with a feral grin. “Walking around with a big fucking stick on my back? No, wait - was it the fact that I hurled lightning at the Arishok in front of the entire nobility of Kirkwall? Did that alert the keen minds of Meredith's finest? ”

“The signs were there.”

“So you are trying to catch me.”

“As I said, you're not often alone.”

The untruth of it hit like a fist to the throat, but she shook it off. “Think you can take me, Cullen?”

“I think it's my job to try.”

“By yourself?”

“I was hoping to avoid a spectacle.”

“Oh, there's going to be a fucking spectacle.” She stood and reached for her staff - why wasn't he reacting? His sword remained in its sheath, shield on his back. He looked…guilty?

“Oh.” There was an odd, silent feeling in her blood. An absence, as if - “You little cunt. Seriously? Magebane?”

He shrugged. “It's for both our safety.”

“You couldn't just…wave your hands, do your little Templar magic?”

“It's not magic. And I thought that might come across as hostile.”

“Poisoning isn't hostile?”

“You're not poisoned, just - quietened for a while.”

“How long?”

“The amount you took? Perhaps a couple of days. It lingers in the system. The concentrating agent -”

“I don't need a bloody alchemy lecture.” She chafed, itching with the urge to set him on fire but lacking the ability.

“Will you come willingly?”

“No part of this is my will,” she spat. “But I'm heading in that direction anyway. I may as well do my best to make your life a misery while I have the chance.”

“There'll be plenty of opportunity, I'm afraid.”

“Wrong. I'm still figuring out how to kill you in cold blood.”

“I appreciate your candor.”

“I don't want you to appreciate anything. I want to make you regret every minute in my company.”

Cullen almost smiled, the smug fuck. “If anyone can do that, Hawke, I'm confident that it's you.”
