The place to go for a bite to eat, for nearly a century
By Jonathan Monfiletto
Representing a local history museum, this blog doesnât concern itself much with current events. However, right now â literally, in this moment, just two days after the Penn Yan Diner sustained âsubstantial damage,â in the words of Yates Countyâs director of emergency services, in the middle of the night â seems to be an appropriate time to be concerned with current events in light of local history.
In the back of my mind, I have had the idea to research the history of the Diner ever since I heard someone describe it as, essentially, the longest continuously-operating restaurant in Penn Yan. Not knowing anything about the Diner â other than that it has really good burgers â I wasnât sure if that was true; it turns out it likely is true, and the Diner is on track to celebrate its centennial being located in the village. Since 1925, the Diner has been situated on a previously vacant lot next to the Masonic Temple, on south side of East Elm Street between Basin Street and Champlin Avenue.
While the future of the Diner remains uncertain, should the Diner be able to re-open and continue operating, it would mark its 100th anniversary as a community institution next May, shortly before it marks one year since the devastating fire. According to the Penn Yan Democrat of April 10, 1925, Byron and Lena Legters rented the vacant lot east of the Masonic Temple and planned to install a Galion dining car. The diner was âto be placed on a concrete platform so the entrance will be at the street level,â and a concrete block kitchen was to be built below the diner. On May 8, the Democrat reported the Legters, of the Buffalo area, had opened what they called the Penn Yan Dining Car.
The original diner measured 30 feet by 10 feet, 6 inches and could accommodate 15 people; the kitchen underneath measured 10 feet by 16 feet. According to a November 1993 article by Herbert A. Wisbey Jr. in The Crooked Lake Review, this made the diner longer and wider than the typical diner â short for dining car, a stationary building modeled after a railroad car â but it retained the usual trolley-like shape. This included the long counter with stools in the front and the food prepared and served from behind the counter. The Galion Dining Car Company, of Galion, Ohio, built the Penn Yan Dining Car as one of at least 66 manufacturers of such dining cars in the country. However, Wisbey refers to the company as âevidently a short-lived company about which little is known.â
Earl Richardson and company, of Silver Creek, installed the dining car on the site and also built the original kitchen. Richard was the first diner installer in western New York and contributed to the diner building boom of the middle to late 1920s, with at least eight companies formed over the next decade. According to a history of the Diner, people lined East Elm Street in 1925 to watch the dining car travel the trolley tracks and be craned into place.
The Legter family had come from Silver Creek as well, and they apparently returned there just a year after opening the Diner and handed the Diner off to Carroll P. Bond. Bond called the eatery the Bond Dining Car, but after encountering financial difficulties he sold it to a Mrs. Williamson â whose son Douglas King managed it â in 1933. Perhaps connected to the financial issues, under Bondâs tutelage, the Diner suffered a fire in the kitchen that caused $1,000 worth of damage. Next, Odell Jones purchased the Diner in 1938 and during his tenure built a kitchen and dining addition onto the diner. This expansion allowed the Diner to seat 18 people at tables and included a new entrance with a glass-block vestibule. Since that time, the structure of the Diner has remained the same.
Yates County Deputy Sheriff Ralph Legg took over the Diner in 1949, but for whatever reason he couldnât make a go of it and Jones took control back. In 1955, Jones sold the Diner to John and Inez Quenan, who ran the Diner for the next 25 years. During the Quenansâ tenure, according to a handwritten anecdote in the Yates County History Centerâs subject files, Joe Just, who worked at Benson Printing â located in the Masonic Temple next to the Diner â broke the news to the staff and clientele of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The print shop took a coffee break every morning at 10 a.m., and the employees headed to the Diner. Just told John Quenan that Kennedy had been shot, and Quenan thought it was a joke until Just switched the TV station and turned to the news coverage.
In 1980, the Quenans sold the Diner to Lyman Beecher, whom John Quenan had trained. Beecher was known as âLyman the Pie Manâ for his homemade pies that were a signature specialty of the Diner during his time at the helm. In 2010, Beecher sold the Diner to Dean Smith, of Conesus. Smithâs tenure was short-lived; he closed the Diner for equipment renovations and opened for summer hours when the upgrades were completed. In 2012, though, Sean and Carrie Ahearn bought and re-opened the Diner after it had been closed for about six months. Calamity took place when the flash flood that hit Yates County in May 2014 left nine feet of water and six inches of mud in the Dinerâs basement. Still, the Diner re-opened just 11 days later.
The community hopes the same can be said for the Diner now under the current owners, Anna Sweet, Nate Salpeter, Alicia Avellaneda, and Cameron Mills, as they contemplate the Dinerâs life after another fire. A review of the Penn Yan Diner in The Naples News of December 1940 still rings true today: âThe Penn Yan Diner is a popular place for motorists as well as local people as they offer a rapid service in good foods and there is no delay. ⌠The air of the commonplace always makes all feel at home and this makes it a distinctly American institution as there is no atmosphere of formality. The service is courteous as well as rapid. The fact that they offer excellent service and good food brings them business from the outlying districts as people know that no matter what time of day or night they may be out they can always find everything in the food line.â

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has announced that it detected three animals thought to be wolves in northern Elko County. This is the first time that wolves have been documented in Nevada since 2016.
âIâm so happy to welcome wolves back to the Silver State where they belong,â said Amaroq Weiss, a senior wolf advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity. âWolves are a vital part of healthy mountain ecosystems in the West, and thereâs plenty of room for them to thrive in Nevada.â
The animals were first detected on March 17 by a helicopter crew that was contracted by the department to radio-collar moose. The crew reported its sighting to the department, which then coordinated with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on a search plan. This led to a site visit by department staff, who discovered tracks, collected scat for DNA-testing and set out trail cameras.
The area where these wolves were detected is a mix of high desert sagebrush steppe and mountains forested in pinyon pine and juniper, with more mountainous forests at higher elevations. Northern Elko County is rich in ungulates like moose, elk, deer and pronghorns, which provide a food source for wolves.
At 2 to 3 years old, wolves typically disperse from the pack in which theyâre born and set off to seek mates and territories of their own. They can wander hundreds of miles in this search.

Cetacean Detonation Frustration
Wikipedia defines viral video as "video clip content whish gains widespread popularity through the process of Internet sharing." Distributed via Web sites, e-mails, and other means, these often funny clips have become a common, even legendary. Internet phenomenon. One such video, a news story from Portland TV station KATU, has become an all-time classic and was the fifth most-watched viral video in 2006 according to a BBC study. Shot by cameraman Doug Brazil and featuring reporter Paul Linnman, it chronicles a whale of an error in judgement.
It happened on November 12, 1970. A few days earlier, an eight-ton, nearly forty-six-foot-long, and very dead gray whale had washed ashore in the coastal town of Florence. Locals considered it an interesting novelty, but the stench of rotting flesh was becoming too much to bear. After some discussion, responsibility for its disposal was foisted on the Oregon Highway Division, whose officials were as confused as anyone about how to get rid of it as anyone about how to get rid of it. A clever plan-or so they thought-was devised after consulting with the navy.
In the video, Linnman, standing near the enormous dead mammal, elaborates: "The Highway Division decided the carcass couldn't be buried because it might soon be uncovered [by the changing tide]. It couldn't be cut up and then buried, because nobody wanted to cut it up, and it couldn't be burned. So dynamite it was, some twenty cases, or a half ton of it." The dynamite was positioned on the side of the whale opposite the ocean, the intent being to blow most of it out to sea. Presumably, seagulls would scavenge the small bits that would be left over, making for a relative easy cleanup.
Curious spectators were moved to sand dunes a quarter of a mile away to avoid injury. Meanwhile, George Thornton, the lead engineer in charge of the project, expressed confidence in the Highway Division's explosive strategy. He cautioned, however, that it might take a second detonation to finish the job.
Observers and Highway Division employees held their collective breath as the seconds ticked down. . . .
In the video, a large cloud of misty red sand suddenly engulfs the whale, followed by a thundering boom. Indeed, at this point it's the audio that's most telling. Cheers are heard, but they abruptly stop. It takes but a second to realize the implications of the repeating splats and the sounds of grossed-out, panic-stricken bystanders. As Linnman alliteratively put it, "the blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds!"
Smelly whale giblets of all sizes rained down on Florence, spattering fleeing onlookers and smashing a parked car well beyond quarter-mile "safe zone." The area quickly became a disgusting, stinky mess.
To make matters worse, George Thornton's caveat came true: Half a ton of dynamite just didn't cut it. Huge chunks of whale were left on the beach. That they were too big for the seagulls to carry off was a moot point; the gulls were nowhere in sight, scared off by the explosion. The remaining pieces had to be buried after all. The only silver lining to this whole fiasco was that, remarkably, nobody was hurt.
As Linnman dryly put it, "It might be concluded that should a whale ever wash ashore in Lane County again, those in charge will not only remember what to do, they'll certainly what not to do." Nine years later, a pod of forty-one dead sperm, whales washed ashore nearby. This time they were burned and, tide be damn, buried.
Thanks to KATU's news report, the dead disintegrated whale achieved immortality. Dubbed tapes of the broadcast circulated for years, and in 1990 humorist Dave Barry wrote a column about it, sarcastically suggesting that we ought to "get hold of the folks at the Oregon State Highway Division and ask them . . . to give us an estimate on the U.S. Capitol." The essay struck a chord with readers and was itself widely circulated. Meanwhile, someone digitized the video and posted it on an electronic bulletin board. From there, it jumped onto the Internet. The exploding whale had hit the big time.
And so, too, did Paul Linnman, who has become inexorably linked with the incident. A few years back, he was interviewed by The BBC News when a dead whale exploded in Taiwan (from natural causes). Once, while in Newport doing a news segment on Keiko the whale (from the movie Free Willy), his presence apparently caused some anxiety. "You're the person who blows up them up," an elderly lady accused him. "What are you doing here?"
As he commented to Weird Oregon, "I've learned to live with the whale since it has come up, in one way or another, every day for nearly thirty-seven years now!" Linnman's firsthand account of this most messy miscalculation can be found in his memoir, titled, The Exploding Whale: And Other Remarkable Stories from the Evening News.

Container Homes in Nevada: Embrace Sustainable Living
Nevada's uniquely challenging climate demands innovative approaches to home-building, and so building a container home in Nevada only offers a trailblazing solution. At the same time, it reduces the environmental impact of construction, and also signals a commitment to sustainable living. By repurposing robust shipping containers, once destined for the scrap heap, creative builders and eco-conscious residents are crafting energy-efficient living spaces. These homes, rising like modern oases in the desert, represent the nexus of durability and design. Tailored to withstand the Silver State's extremes, container homes perfectly exemplify the ingenious reinvention of materials in our quest for conservation and efficiency. Understanding Nevada's Climate and Environment for Container Homes Shipping Container home in Pahrump, Nevada, United States When considering the construction of a container home in Nevada, it's crucial to understand the state's varied climate zones and their implications for building. Nevada's diverse landscape, spanning from arid deserts to snow-capped mountains, requires careful planning to ensure your container home not only stands firm but also remains comfortable throughout the year. Overview of Nevada's Climate Zones and Their Implications for Home Building Nevada is characterized by its extreme climate variations, encompassing primarily desert and semi-arid regions. The southern part of the state, including Las Vegas, experiences hot summers with temperatures often exceeding 100°F, while winters are mild to cool. In contrast, northern regions, such as Reno, encounter colder winters with significant snowfall. Methods to Reduce Water Usage in the Desert Environment - Low-flow fixtures: Installing faucets, showerheads, and toilets designed to use less water without sacrificing performance. - Drought-tolerant landscaping: Choosing native plants that require minimal irrigation, reducing outdoor water usage significantly. - Water-efficient appliances: Opting for dishwashers and washing machines that are rated for their water conservancy. - Rainwater harvesting: Implementing systems to collect rainwater for landscaping and non-potable uses. Innovative Water Recycling Systems Suitable for Container Homes - Greywater systems: Recycling water from sinks, showers, and laundry, repurposing it for toilet flushing or irrigation. - Blackwater treatment: Utilizing advanced composting toilets or bioreactor systems to safely treat and recycle wastewater on-site. Integrating these water conservation techniques within your container home design is not only environmentally responsible but also aligns with Nevada's commitment to sustainability. By embracing these strategies, homeowners contribute to preserving precious water resources while enjoying a modern, eco-conscious lifestyle. Read More on Container Home in Brisbane, Australia: Transformed Living Land Selection and Preparation for Container Homes in Nevada Three men standing next to an excavator doing site survey with a theodolite When it comes to building a container home in Nevada, choosing the right piece of land and preparing it properly are crucial steps in ensuring the success of your construction project. This section will guide you through the critical aspects of land selection and the necessary preparation measures to build your dream container home in the Silver State. Criteria for Choosing the Right Location for Your Project Selecting the perfect location for your container home involves several considerations that will affect not only the construction process but also your future living comfort. Here are the important criteria to consider: - Accessibility: Ensure the land has good access to roads, especially if you plan to transport large shipping containers. - Zoning Laws: Confirm that the zoning regulations of the area permit the construction of container homes and understand any restrictions that may apply. - Topography: Look for a level plot to minimize groundwork costs; however, if the land is sloped, plan for a design that embraces the unique landscape. - Soil Quality: Conduct soil testing to determine if the ground can support the weight of a container home without extensive reinforcement. - Climate Impact: Account for Nevada's arid climate; selecting a site with natural windbreaks and shade can help manage temperatures. - Utilities: Proximity to necessary utilities such as water, electricity, and sewage, or the potential to use alternative systems like solar power and septic tanks, should be factored into your selection. Preparing Your Site for a Container Home Build Once you've selected the ideal plot of land, the next step is preparing your site for the build. This involves several essential actions to ensure your container home has a stable and durable foundation: - Site Clearance: Remove any debris, vegetation, or obstructions from the area where the container will be placed. - Leveling and Grading: Level the ground to provide a flat surface for the containers and ensure proper drainage away from the home. - Foundation Construction: Install a suitable foundation such as a concrete slab or pier system to support the weight of your container home and anchor it against high winds. - Utility Connections: Plan and execute the connection of utilities, whether by hooking up to existing grids or integrating alternative systems like solar panels and septic tanks. - Permitting: Make sure you obtain all necessary permits before commencing construction to avoid legal complications and fines. By thoroughly addressing these considerations for land selection and preparation, you can lay a solid foundation for your container home in Nevada, ensuring its longevity and your enjoyment for years to come. Read More on Shipping Container Homes in Los Angeles: Modern Living Incorporating Green Roofs and Insulation for Temperature Control in Nevada Container Homes In brief, creating a comfortable living environment in the extreme Nevada climate requires innovative strategies. Two of the most effective methods for regulating temperature in container homes are the integration of green roofs and the use of high-quality insulation. When adeptly incorporated, these features can lead to significant improvements in energy efficiency and overall sustainability. Benefits of Green Roofs in the Nevada Heat - Temperature Moderation: Green roofs act as natural insulators, reducing heat absorption during the sweltering summer months and keeping heat in during the colder winter periods. - Eco-friendly: The vegetation on green roofs provides a habitat for wildlife, contributes to better air quality, and mitigates the urban heat island effect, particularly relevant in Nevada's urban areas. - Water Retention: In a word, they absorb rainwater, which reduces runoff and can help in managing stormwater in the local environment. - Increased Longevity: Straightaway protecting the roof from UV radiation and temperature fluctuations, green roofs can extend the lifespan of roofing materials. Insulation Options for Achieving Optimal Temperature Regulation Efficient insulation is crucial in maintaining a steady interior temperature, thus cutting energy costs and boosting the overall comfort of container homes in Nevada. Selection of the right insulation is key to combat the desert climate. - Spray Foam Insulation: Provides a high R-value and comprehensive coverage, sealing gaps and crevices that might otherwise allow heat exchange. - Rigid Foam Boards: Offers substantial thermal resistance and can be applied to walls, roofs, and floors to prevent thermal bridging. - Fiberglass Batts: A cost-effective option that is easy to install and offers reliable thermal performance suitable for Nevadaâs fluctuating temperatures. - Reflective Insulation: Reflects radiant heat away from the container home, particularly advantageous in Nevada's sunny climate. In summary, as the interest in eco-conscious living grows, integrating green roofs and proper insulation in a container home design has become a strategic approach to ensure a livable and sustainable dwelling in Nevada's challenging climate. ### Exploring Los Angeles on a Budget: Tips for an Affordable Adventure
Los Angeles, the City of Angels, is known for its star-studded streets, sprawling beaches, and vibrant cultural scene. While it might seem like a city where glamour reigns supreme, you can absolutely enjoy LA without spending a fortune. Hereâs how you can explore Los Angeles on a budget, making the most of your trip without breaking the bank.
#### 1. **Travel Smart**
Getting around LA can be one of your biggest expenses. Instead of renting a car or relying on ride-sharing services, consider using public transportation. The LA Metro and bus system can get you to most major attractions like Santa Monica, Downtown LA, and even Universal Studios. A TAP card costs $2 and you can load it with a day pass for $7, offering unlimited rides.
#### 2. **Affordable Accommodations**
Stay outside the pricier areas like West Hollywood and Santa Monica. Neighborhoods such as Koreatown, Silver Lake, or even Downtown LA offer more affordable lodging options. Hostels are a great choice for budget travelers, with prices as low as $30 a night. Additionally, look for hotels that offer a kitchenette to save money on meals.
#### 3. **Eat Like a Local**
Los Angeles is a melting pot of cuisines and many of the best meals are found in food trucks or small, family-run establishments. Explore ethnic enclaves like Thai Town, Little Armenia, and the historic Olvera Street for authentic and affordable meals. Don't miss the chance to try some of the cityâs best tacos for just a couple of bucks each.
#### 4. **Free Attractions**
LA is home to numerous free attractions. Spend a day at the beach, visit the Griffith Observatory (free entry), or explore the Getty Center. Enjoy a free concert at the California Plaza, or walk through the Arts District to check out street murals. The city also offers free museum days, so check schedules in advance.
#### 5. **Discount Tickets for Events and Attractions**
Look for discounts on tourist passes and tickets for attractions like Universal Studios, Disneyland, or the Warner Bros. Studio Tour. Websites like Groupon or LAâs official tourism site often feature deals. Also, consider visiting attractions like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on free days.
#### 6. **Hiking and Nature**
One of LAâs greatest assets is its year-round pleasant weather and natural beauty. Enjoy free hiking spots like Runyon Canyon, Franklin Canyon, or the Santa Monica Mountains. Each offers unique views of the city and doesnât cost a dime.
#### 7. **Shopping on a Budget**
While Rodeo Drive is iconic, shopping there might not be budget-friendly. Instead, head over to the LA Fashion District for wholesale prices on clothing, or explore the flea markets like the Rose Bowl Flea Market for unique and affordable finds.
#### Conclusion
Los Angeles offers a wealth of experiences that don't have to drain your wallet. With a little planning and some local insight, you can enjoy all that this dynamic city has to offer, while keeping your spending in check. Whether itâs soaking up the sun at Venice Beach, enjoying a taco in East LA, or catching a free show downtown, LA is full of affordable gems waiting to be explored. So pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in Los Angeles!

President Biden will travel to Rolling Fork, Miss., on Friday to survey the damage from the massive and deadly storms that tore through the state over the weekend.
First lady Jill Biden will also join the president on the trip. They will assess recovery efforts and âreaffirm their commitment to supporting the people of Mississippi as long as it takes,â the White House announced on Wednesday.Â
The Bidens also plan to meet with first responders, state and local officials, and communities impacted by the storms.
The president on Sunday declared an emergency to aid recovery and clean-up efforts in Mississippi, making federal funds available for a number of counties that were ravaged in the state. Multiple tornadoes ripped through Mississippi on Friday, with one of the more devastating ones striking 60 miles northeast of Jackson.
Biden on Saturday called Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) and lawmakers from the state, including Republican Sens. Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson.
On those calls, the president expressed his condolences for the lives lost and the damage resulting from the tornadoes and asked how he can be most supportive.
The president typically visits sites of natural disasters and other incidents to survey damage and meet with first responders, local leaders and those impacted.
He faced backlash last month for not visiting Ohio in the wake of the train derailment in East Palestine. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan went on behalf of the administration. Manwhile, former President Trump also visited the site.

Belmont in Manhattan, Nevada Silver was discovered in this area in late 1865, and Belmont was established soon thereafter. It became the county seat of Nye County in 1867, replacing Ione, and reached a peak population of maybe a few thousand by 1870. The camp had faded by the 1880s, with only 36 voters recorded in 1903. The county seat was moved to Tonopah in 1905, where it remains today. There were some intermittent revivals thereafter, during World War I in particular, but the post office closed for the second time in 1922. The town was never completely abandoned, though. In fact, since the late 20th century there has been a mini-boom in new residents for those who really want to get away from it all. This is shown by incongruous new construction scattered among the ruins. Many ruins remain, however. Coming into town from the south, visitors may notice a lone brick chimney off to the west; this is all that remains of the Monitor-Belmont Mill, built in 1867 and revived briefly during the World War I boom. On the north side of town, an even taller brick smokestack is the surviving remnant of the Combination Mill, built in 1868. The damage to the top of the chimney is said to have come from Air Force pilots using it as a target while training. The most interesting structure is undoubtedly the Belmont Courthouse, easily the most imposing building left in Belmont. It is prominent a couple of blocks west of the downtown. The courthouse is currently a historic site and there are plans to refurbish it, but at present (2023) it is closed. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/belmont
