i dared pay with a plain note the last time and he was so befuddled
"what is this, where's the pizazz? you can't just spoil me with all those cute origami figures and then leave me hanging like this"
so i made him a flower out of a napkin instead
(also he told me he keeps each and every origami figure that i made, and now i feel bad because that is money he doesn't get to spend)
Origami Anon, you need to take this man out for a pint. He is keeping your favours. He is literally... keeping the parts of you... he can have at personal expense. This is driving me insane. I am gnawing on my coffee table.
Ask him out tomorrow. Put your number inside an origami. Blow his little mind. Please. (Tell us how it goes.)

Collage box collection
After discovering that I had a reasonably big stash of interesting flyers, greetings cards, guidebooks and other bits of ephemera, and seeing this tutorial, I was really inspired to use it all for something.
This was helped by the fact that recently I've found a lot of really nice wooden boxes in charity shops for very cheap - all the ones pictured here were £2. Either I've been extremely lucky, or these things turn up very often and I just haven't been looking for them.
I've posted about some of these previously (here and here), but they were only half done and these pictures are better! Plus there is one new one.
First was this wooden chocolate box. Before...
And after!
You can tell this is my first one as I oversatured the paper with Mod Podge, leading to it bubbling and creasing, but for a first attempt I don't think it's bad at all.
All the pictures I used were taken from an exhibition guide for an event I went to called "Exploring the Gothic" which contained a lot of beautiful pictures. The floral parts were from a pad of scrapbooking paper, which I also used to make the individual compartments (they are origami boxes, see a tutorial for how to make them here) and I then filled them with pieces from my collection of beads, charms, and broken jewellery.
I also had a guide to a William Blake exhibition I'd been to, and since there was an entire plate from "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell" I had to make it into a miniature wall plaque.
I did this one at the same time as the first, and again you can kind of see that I oversatured the paper which caused it to tear slightly, however thankfully it wasn't in an area where there was any writing.
(BTW, if anyone is interested in the meaning of this section, Blake is describing his creative process, albeit in a fantastical way. This blog post gives a good analysis)
The next one was a beautiful little cabinet with a broken handle.
And here is what I did with it. I kept the collaging to a minimum, only on the inside, though I might add something to the outside in the future. The replacement "handles" are a pair of my earrings!
I used some more of the gothic exhibition guide and scrapbook paper, and also a flyer for a ballet version of Dracula. I need to find some more interesting things to fill it as it currently only contains my resin crow's skull and a miniature book of Tennyson poems. Also my Cthulhu candle gets to sit on top and be worshipped by the skeleton on the right door.
I did much better with the collaging process on this one. I was a lot more patient, used less Mod Podge for each layer and allowed them to dry fully in between, resulting in no tears, bubbles or creasing.
The final and most recent is this plain box. I noticed it originally came from somewhere called "Palmyra Hardware" which instantly made me think of the Palmyra Wolves (I'm a fan of MrBallen and saw him tell the story on his YouTube channel) which gives a pleasantly creepy angle to this one before I even did anything to it!

The central image on the outside is another William Blake painting, an illustration to Dante's Inferno, which includes the famous quote "Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here". The writing saying "The way, the truth, the life" came from a religious leaflet that a friend of mine was forcibly given, and which he ripped to shreds, but I saved this part because for some reason I liked it.
Inside we've got a very famous Blake painting called "The Ancient of Days", the praying skeleton again as this image was reproduced several times in that guidebook, and a block printed demon from a handmade birthday card that a friend gave me several years ago. I'm very pleased to have finally been able to use him for something!
I've enjoyed making all of these immensely and no doubt I will do more in the future as I collect more papers and find more nice boxes 😊

A new design for my fundraiser, shown here as a sticker. You can find it here.
As usual ALL PROCEEDS from my shop are for my Palestinian best friend to help him support his friends and family in Palestine and around the rest of the Levant who are being hurt directly and/or financially by the attacks on Gaza, the raids and economic devastation in the West Bank and the collateral damage in surrounding countries. He will donate anything his family doesn't need to the Palestinian charities he works with.

hm i'm trying to start a [workplace] knitting club but i am noticing several potential issues
the main one being that like. i have a solid number of colleagues who are knitters and have expressed interest in a knitting club in the sense of "get together with other people and interact socially while knitting", which is the thing i am attempting to run
and many other people who respond to the idea with "i don't knit but i'd love to learn how!"
and i would like to cater to both demographics. but i'm a little nervous that the attendee breakdown will end up making it less of a knit-while-socializing activity and more of an ad-hoc, poorly-run How To Knit class. and im happy to teach like 1-2 people to knit in a casual friendly way. but after that i would kind of like to be paid or something
#this is a concern partly bc my coworker ran Climbing Group and got like 85% brand new people taking the intro class#and very few actual climbers. so there is precedent#box opener#i could have a 'knitting club' half and a 'knitting class' half but then i don't get to actually do knitting club because i am again#teaching for free.#however i think if i'm like 'only for people who can already knit!' that's exclusionary. and i AM happy for crocheters/people doing#origami/whatever to attend. i'm just not sure how to be like 'ideally this is primarily a social activity and not a class'#'bring something you already know how to do at least a little bit'#'someone will help you......... once'#maybe we meet IN a coffee shop near work? and then it's obviously not a classroom-like environment?#then i need to squeeze reimbursing-people's-coffee out of our recreational budget group and that may be a lost cause already.

2022 Dice Advent Calendar
Happy holidays, everyone! It's finally December, which means I can at last reveal something I started working on weeks ago: a handmade Advent Calendar full of nothing but gaming dice!
I prepared the whole thing as a surprise for the others in my household, but nearly all the dice are from blind-bags and were stuffed in the boxes in such a way that even I don't know for sure what we'll discover*!
I thought it'd be fun to document our haul here as each box is opened. I'll be tagging everything as #Dicemas2022. Can't wait to see what treasures fate (RNGesus?) chooses to bestow upon us! :)
* - I do know a FEW things ahead of time, but I'll leave exactly what and why as my little secrets until the time is right!

#Dicemas2022#anyway HHHNNGGGH I've been so excited to start this since the idea first popped into my head#I was window-shopping for dice on Etsy (as one does) and something popped up advertising an advent calendar#and the thought basically possessed me body and soul until I caved and spent an inordinate amount of money on mystery dice#this is not how I usually am; I almost never impulse-buy anything let alone something this expensive#but it sounded SO fun and I hope it turns out enjoyable for everyone involved :'3#also btw I made all the boxes myself--they're a myriad of origami patterns all made from nice colored cardstock#and not to toot my own horn but I think the end result of the calendar itself looks pretty heckin rad
