Deborah Kerr (Bonjour Tristesse, An Affair to Remember, The King and I)— For several decades she held the record for most Oscar nominations without a win (6 in total), and she was a prolific leading lady throughout the 40s and 50s. She's best known today for the romance An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant, and as the governess in The King and I. Many people have this erroneous perception of her as extremely prim, proper, and virginal, but this could not be further from the truth. When she first came to Hollywood under MGM she was typecast into boring decorative roles, but broke sexual boundaries for herself and Hollywood generally in From Here to Eternity, when she made out (horizontally!) with Burt Lancaster (on top of him!) in the famous Beach Scene. She went on to play many sexually conflicted women, a character type that would define most of her post- Eternity work. She continued to break Hays Code boundaries with Tea and Sympathy, which addresses homosexuality/homophobia head-on, and even did a topless scene in The Gypsy Moths 1969!! One of the only classic stars to do so. She deserves a more nuanced and frankly a hotter legacy than she currently has!!!

Keiko Awaji (Stray Dog, A Japanese Tragedy, When a Woman Ascends the Stairs)— Her role as Harumi— a dancer who lives with her mom and will go to incredible lengths for one nice dress— is so fucking killer. she more than holds her own against Toshiro Mifune, the incredible sense of dread and foreboding in their scenes has really stuck with me

Hazel Scott (Broadway Rhythm, Rhapsody in Blue)—ok ok let me tell you about Hazel Scott. She was a Trinidadian piano genius. By the age of 3 she could play the piano by ear. She would play jazzed-up versions of classics in nightclubs and could sing too! She appeared in five movies, and used her influence as a piano prodigy to improve Black representation in film—she turned down offensive parts, demanded equal pay, and always wore her own costumes to ensure she was portrayed as glamorous and beautiful. She was the first African-American woman to host her own television show, The Hazel Scott Show. She stood up for civil rights and was an overall icon! I think she was one of my first crushes before I realised I was bi in The King and I when I watched it as a kid honestly. The kissing scene in From Here to Eternity is iconic for a reason. Actually tried to learn the accents for the characters she was playing if they weren't English which is more than pretty much anyone else was doing then. I'm going to start off with the KING (not literally hehe) Morris K. If you are a fan of Thai BL, then you'll probably recognize him from Triage... and if you haven't seen Triage then I highly recommend you do!!! But... he has quite the acting career under his belt. He's been very open about his struggles being half-black, and how his being the first black celebrity in Thailand was a difficult journey. He's a huge advocate for more opportunities for Thai-black people in show business. He literally paved the way and I have great respect for him.

Fang is a mercenary/bounty hunter and the leader of Team Hooligan. Though he often works alone for most gigs, he considers his team to be a found family of sorts, despite not always getting along with them. He has a great fascination for guns, but often uses his regular cork gun unless it's for serious situations. He's easy to anger and is heavily motivated by his greed and desire to prove himself as a top notch mercenary. Though things don't always work in his favor.

He's told very few people about his origins, how he had once descended from a noble family, until "one incident led to another and now suddenly I'm all on my own!" The one thing he absolutely REFUSES to tell people is that Fang isn't really his birth name.

• Cocky, Greedy, and Selfish. Probably has a slight tinge of insecurity due to past failures with Sonic and company.

• Keeps cigarette packs on his person often.

• Has a small shack he and the others share together over in Mirage Saloon Zone. He started sharing his room with Jest once she started hanging around.

Jest is another bounty hunter, who despite her silly clown appearance, is a very threatening figure. She came across Team Hooligan after they [Mainly just Fang] attempted to mug her, to which they received a harsh beating at her hand. She has found herself to be fixated on their leader however, and sticks around them to watch them struggle for success.

She grew up in a circus with her sisters, before finding herself fixated on the chaos emeralds and chaos energy. Unleashing an ultimate chaos has been her grand goal as she hopes to spread her madness across the world. She plans to achieve that, either by herself or with other comrades as her stepping stool.

• Loud, Annoying and Obnoxious. Loves to push Fang's buttons and watch him lose his cool. Her not so secret crush on him is absurd.

• A known sadist, she enjoys intimidating others and seeks out the emeralds for power and chaos.

• Enjoys gossiping with her friends, Ace and Solar, particularly about the Hooligans.

• What her and Fang have is a somewhat open secret. It's hard to tell if they hate each other or love each other. From their endless bickering to Jest's raunchy flirting.

Not much is known of where Bean came from, but from what Bean's told about himself, he remembers being in an egg. And a great amount of movement. Up until he hatched and found himself all alone in the middle of the forest. Most just assume he hit his head or something before he ran into Bark.

He's particularly shy and doesn't really like communicating much with others, as he finds it quite difficult. And despite his rather prickly job, he means well and cares for others like Bean and Amy Rose.

Before he had become a member of Team Hooligan, it's been said that he's gotten his fighting experience from being that of a professional fighter. He doesn't enjoy bringing it up, but he prefers what he's got going on now. If any of the others ask to fight him, he'll consider the offer.

• Quiet, Tough, and Stoic. He cares though, he's just a bit shy when it comes to feelings.

• A walking furnace, he gets warm easily and has an itch for cold food often.

My Calypso with Miss @gigizetz 's background. I'll put my thought process below the art bc I don't wanna type out a whole paragraph above the art. Also there are spoilers, so yeah

I'm basically just copying what I explained to my friends and put on my instagram post so bear with it.

To celebrate Epic: The Musical's Wisdom Saga coming out I drew my version of Calypso. I went through a couple different ideas before settling on her because what her design was to me, is right up my alley. I used Miss Gigi's background shot, so by NO means is it mine.

She has 7 eyes bc she trapped Ody for 7 yrs and it's the 7th saga. Her 4 arms show literally holding Odysseus hostage. More than 2 eyes show that she always has her eyes on him. The chains are like what's keeping him trapped yk. She's wearing traditional Trinidadian clothes so not much on that. Her hairstyle I always pictures half up so I did that and I based the braids on a hairstyle I've had multiple times. Her nose is also based off of me bc I am an Island girlie. Her earrings are the first earrings me and my cousins and the rest of us have gotten and that's like the trini default earrings. The ripples are vaguely like waves since she lives on an island.

About the design I have some notes but there are a couple things I wanted to say. Basically since the creator of Epic: The Musical, Mr. Jorge Rivera-Herrans, used calypso music for the Calypso character, I based her heavily off of my culture, Trinidad and Tobago culture. I figured calypso music was from the islands but was too scared to claim it in case it wasn't from my country specifically, but knowing that made the design process a lot more relaxed. I wasn't grown up with traditional Trinidadian clothing, save for when I participated in Carnival as a kid, so I had to do research on the dresses and stuff. Drawing non-human characters, even if humanoid, is something I've been trying recently and I'm starting to enjoy it.

Side note: I imagine if I were to animate this, Odysseus' confusion at Calypso being a goddess would dissipate when she opens the 5 other eyes she has.

So on my old account I used to hc he is Indian-British, whose family hails from Travancore (Kerala nowadays). This was based on what I ASSUMED was canon info since back in January, all Chicken Run wiki articles about him mentioned he's Indian-British. But apparently that's not 100% settled info what his ethnicity is?? And the wikis have been edited since. His VA Nick Mohammed is from a mixed Cypriot/Indo-Trinidadian family though and I spent time reading about Indian-British immigrant history to get Fry's characterization accurate, so imma keep with that hc.

Anyway! I headcanon Marcus is the only child of wealthy businessmen that owned a highly successful trade company. His Vaishya grandparents moved to Britain during the late Victorian era; after all one of the only ways a PoC family could make it back then in Britain was by being filthy rich, and very early on the Fry family had been forced to adopt a "British" way of living in order to be taken seriously by the shitass imperial society. Such as switching to a British surname and avoiding to display too much of their original culture in public. A colonial trauma that still prevails, since Fry's parents christened him with a heavily English name.

I REEEALLY wanna give a try to designing Fry's parents sometime!! But I imagine his parents as sort of a healthier parallel to Melisha's parents; his father is a pristine and calm gentleman with a soothing voice and a love for theatre and literature (a trait that Marcus inherited LMAO) while his mother is more stern, headstrong and very, VERY proud of her status. (but she also has a infectuous smile and laughter and has a bombastic overdramatic streak...something that Fry inherited as well)

They're both native Malayam speakers, and while their family in public strives to keep Keralite culture hidden, they made sure to teach Marcus to speak his native language fluently as well, along with Hindi, Bengali, Tegulu and Tamil. Along with that, they frequently go on family trips to Travancore and enjoy things like inji neer, Kathakali performances (which inspired Fry on his love for theatre <3) and Carnatic music.

Both parents pushed Marcus to study hard and gain multiple academic degrees - it was all out of love and concern, because they wanted Marcus to be able to survive in the cruel world out there without only relying on his money. (Once again, a PoC immigrant family experience that I can identify with as well... even if society nowadays is not nearly as racist as it was back then, unfortunately PoC people are often forced to study waaaay harder than white people in order to make it.) Because they had lived through the years of great depression in the 1930s, and while they managed to survive with most of their wealth intact, they knew that one should not rely only on money for support since anything could happen.

Fry, as a child, was a gifted A+ grade student and a very well-behaved, so his parents called him a little ray of sunshine and a future hope. He yearned to be perfect so his parents would never be disappointed in him. Something that later on contributed MASSIVELY to Fry's gifted child burnout, and how he adopted a sinister, sadistic fascination with mind control and manipulation during his Cambridge years.

Once Marcus came out as trans and genderfluid to his parents, his father was very patient and accepting, but his mother spent several years in denial before finally accepting him. Not directly out of transphobia - but because she was afraid that Marcus would be discriminated, attacked and hurt by people, and that he should focus first on building a career for himself instead of bringing a bad name to the Fry family like this, with an outrageous gender identity. But she soon realized that hiding himself would only hurt her child on the long run. Also - the way Fry managed to fully bribe (cough mind control cough) British officials to switch the gender in his personal info and passport was nothing less than impressive to both of his parents LMFAOOOO and they're very proud

However despite all of this, Fry retains a loving relationship to his parents!! He goes to their mansion every Christmas, and they're also VERY accepting and encouraging to his marriage to Melisha. In fact, his mom was relieved to see Fry had married a very orderly, stern and no-nonsense woman, because Marcus had always been a scatterbrained mess and a reckless money-spender. He made a wonderful scientist, but business-running had never been his thing, so Melisha taking care of all that is like a lottery win to the Fry parents. ESPECIALLY since Melisha came from a poor household - a woman like this, who knows what it's like to live at the rock bottom, surely knows to keep Marcus humble and not let him make flimsy business decisions!! (either way Melisha is still a bit intimidated by Fry's mom, which says a lot considering what kind of a girl Melisha herself is LMFAO)

Pluuuus... the Harsh Expectations(TM) is something that Melisha can relate to </3 It's something that catches her entirely off guard, when she learns this detail about Fry's past. After all, the silly goofy doctor is like an endless ray of sunshine, he's rich and successful. (and we all know what Melisha's mother told her about money bringing happiness...) How could he ever have any worries or feelings of inferiority??

It's a detail that makes (in my hcs) Melisha fall even deeper in love with Fry and become tenfold more protective over him :''') <3 Once she realizes what a horrific burden this goofball is carrying on his back, and yet he still finds the energy every day to stay positive, be optimistic and support Melisha during her hard days.

I was born/raised in America but culturally I’m Trinidadian! Trinidad is a very tiny island in the Caribbean with a huge oil industry 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹

Our language is english (we only got independence from the British in 1962 rip) but a lot of our television is in Spanish bc we’re so close to Venezuela to the point where you could see it from the island (and my grandparents used to take a small boat there to do shopping XDDD)

Our food is a hodgepodge of lots of different cultures, primarily Indian and African (tho idk specific countries). We also invented the steel pan and have Carnival and Borough Day, two HUGE celebrations

We have a couple legends and myths:

La Diablesse is a woman who walks at the side of the road at night, her human foot on the pavement and her hoof in the grass, and lures men into the forest (tho only unfaithful men are enchanted by her and follow). Then she disappears and they basically run around lost until they meet their demise

Douens are spirits of children who died before baptism. Their feet are backwards, and if they hear a child’s name, they call it, luring the kid into the forest. Very mischievous and they wear large hats that cover their face, or well a lack therof XDDD

When it comes to myths, we have this thing called “Maljo”. Caused by envy but the way I always knew it was like if you excessively compliment something then you accidentally inflict that thing with Maljo, basically cursing it. My mom had a type of beaded bracelet around her wrist when she was little to sorta ward it off

Lastly, this isn’t common anymore, but my grandparents’ generation has two names. Their public name and the actual name they have which is used at home iirc. It’s like this so it’s harder for ppl with bad intentions to curse you as they only have your public name, not your real one

We have more, all of which are a mix of the different cultures that were brought or came here, but these are the ones I grew up hearing about most and this is already too long so XDDD

ahh so many facts about Trinidad, thank you!!! <3 The custom of carrying two names as a way to prevent curses is very clever. We sort of have something like that in some (*not all afaik) Indigenous cultures here in Canada, where you have the name you're known by to friends and family, but you can also have a spirit name that follows you from life to life, and this name is typically something that has to come to you as a sort of 'reminder' of your past lives, if that makes sense (i.e. it's not something you can willingly choose or be given). AFAIK tho it doesn't prevent curses LOL but that's another fun fact I was reminded of reading this in exchange for a lot of great ones, tysm again!!!

Personality:

Mary is confident and self-assured. She doesn't take ish from anybody so if you try her, she will snap you back in place. Even when the vampires are constantly after her and her mother, Mary never backed down. She also has a sensitive, caring and compassionate side, only showing that side to her loved ones. Mary would fight for her loved ones and has no problem showing her loyalty to them.

Some Facts:

-She was born in New Orleans, to her mother Terri who was of Trinidadian and Haitian descent. Her grandmother Dinah was Haitian while her grandfather was Trinidadian. She is autistic.

-She did pageants as a child, with her grandmother as her coach. She did this until she was 15. She decided to quit and just focus on modeling.

-Before moving to Crimson Beech, she did some modeling for teen magazines back in New Orleans. She took a hiatus from modeling to finish high school.

-She spent most of her childhood with her grandparents because her mother was busy getting her medical degree. That's why Terri is often all up in Mary's business all the time - make up for her absence.

-She wasn't too happy with moving to Crimson Beech as she didn't want to live so far away from her grandparents. The vampire situation made it all the more infuriating.

-She was the 'queen bee' back in her old high school. She wasn't mean unless you tried her.

-She still calls her grandparents often, to make sure they're okay.

-Her favorite animal is the black widow spider 🕷

Relationships:

Her grandparents: She is very close to them both.

Her mother Terri:

She and her mother have their ups and downs and Mary feels trapped as her mother wants her to stay a child. Because Terri was building up her career for most of Mary's younger years, there is a disconnect between them as Terri is trying to play catch up. But Mary is an adult now so Terri has to accept that. Despite that, the mother-daughter duo love each other to bits and would fight and kill for one another.

Gabe Adalhard:

Gabriel is one of Mary's love interests.

At the beginning, Gabriel has an obvious crush on Mary. Mary didn't necessarily return that crush at that time (as she was aware of Libby's crush on him) but is flattered. She is attracted to him still and doesn't reject his advances.

She is sympathetic to his trauma with his family's deaths and would comfort him when he got sad.

She was shocked and hurt that he lied to her about being human and didn't talk to him for a bit. After spending time with his vampire friends, the two make up.

Cas Harlow:

Cas is Mary's second love interest.

She and Cas got off at the wrong foot as Cas tried to kill her when she first moved to Crimson Beech. Since then, Mary has never liked him for the first part of the story, making snarky remarks at him and him matching her sass. It's until Cas saved her from a feral Gabriel is when she starts to warm up. Him as well.

She doesn't know what to think of Cas most of the time as he looks down on humans. But after being on the run from the covens, she does see his tender side.

Seth:

Seth is one of the Venandis and Cas' mentee. Mary has a soft spot for Seth and thinks of him as a younger brother. She and her mother Terri have pretty much adopted him at this point. Seth is the only Venandi vampire Mary is close to, besides Cas. With Val, Margo and Scott, Mary is merely acquainted with them as she dislikes them for being rude to her, for trying to kill her several times and for accusing Cas of being traitor back in Book 1.

Nicole:

Nicole is Mary's vampire homegirl and confidant. After being turned, Mary grows close to Nicole.

Libby:

Mary is acquainted with Libby but Libby thinks they're friends for some reason, even when they liked the same guy (Gabriel).

Current events in Mary's life:

At the end of Book 1, Mary is turned into a vampire but something strange is going with her vampirism....

She would play jazzed-up versions of classics in nightclubs and could sing too! She appeared in five movies, and used her influence as a piano prodigy to improve Black representation in film—she turned down offensive parts, demanded equal pay, and always wore her own costumes to ensure she was portrayed as glamorous and beautiful. She was the first African-American woman to host her own television show, The Hazel Scott Show. She stood up for civil rights and was an overall icon! Whats classic books you find underrated?

Oh, another question I love! This one is a little bit harder because most classics books (especially by white English-speaking writers) get their clout and more. But still, there's some books that I wish would get more mainstream hype.

Beloved by Toni Morrison. I know she's extremely popular in the US and that she has a whole-ass Nobel Prize. She's one of the greats! But I still want to hear this book in people's mouths more when we discuss the most exceptional modern classics.

No Exit by Jean-Paul Satre. Really encapsulates everything pertinent about existential thought. Gave us The Good Place. "Hell is other people". Amazing.

A House For Mr. Biswas by VS Naipaul. Appreciated in nicher circles, I guess, but I'd love to see a Trinidadian author (yes, I know he was like, evil, but still) get more flowers on a mainstream level.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë. Stop leaving my girlie out of the Brontë conversations, please and thanks!

A Separate Peace by John Knowles. Is this the original dark academia bildungsroman? Donna Tartt what are you doing on the floor?! Anyway, I feel sorry for people who didn't read this as a kid or adolescent.

She's the youngest and shortest member of the task force.

• This woman is clumsy and accident prone af, she's always hitting her toe on something or tripping over nothing. The couch in the common room hate her. Actually the couch, the doors and the coffee table.

• She's dropped her phone on her face more time then she can count.

• She squeaks a lot, when she hurts her toe or you wake her up she sounds like King (If you watched owl house, you then you know. Squeak of rage). She squeaks or makes some noise for everything.

• She gets lost constantly, if she goes out with them, they lose her...cause she's short (5'2) and their all giants. The sad thing that shes not always lost, they just need to look down

• She'll stay quiet on purpose, just to make them believe they lost her. She finds their panic hilarious.

Ciara's traits are: Cheerful, Clumsy, Bookworm, Socially Awkward, and Genius (two of those are from the "self discovery" feature, but I can't remember which ones!)

-> Education: Has two prestigious degrees with honors from Foxbury Institute (Communications and Computer Science).

-> Her likes include: Spring, pastel color palettes: especially the colors yellow, pink, blue, and purple. She likes romantic, pop, and soul music. She loves engaging in Silly behavior, giving (and receiving) compliments, discussing interests, physical intimacy, flirting, and a little bit of what she calls "harmless" gossiping (specifically about silly stuff like the royal family or pop culture in general). She gravitates toward idealist and funny sims, but more than anything her favorite kind of sims are family-motivated sims. She also enjoys acting and singing, even though she does both of those things quite poorly (that doesn't stop her, lol).

-> Her dislikes include: The "color" grey - she would argue that grey is definitely not a color, and she sees waaaay too much of it in the math and science field. She likes most genres of music, but Metal music is an absolute no-go and she is kind of a scaredy-cat who prefers the "cute" side of Halloween, so spooky music is also out. She doesn't tend to run in the same spaces as high-energy sims: she was not gifted in the athletics department and hates fitness activities, skiing, rock climbing, and snowboarding. However, she dislikes egotistical and argumentative sims the most! As a cheerful, optimistic sim she doesn't like conversations focused on complaints, pranks, arguments, potty humor, or malicious interactions.

-> Some fun facts include: Ciara was a happy infant and toddler, an only child who grew up in the spice market area of San Myshuno and was raised by a loving, generous single dad who she's still extremely close to. Her dad worked in nonprofits and charity work, always encouraging her to advocate for others, give back to their community, and be compassionate. Her mom passed away when she was only a year old, but her dad has done a solid job at keeping her memory alive. Ciara is half Japanese (her mother's side) and half Trinidadian/Tobagonian (on her father's side).

As soon as she could hold a hammer and power up a computer, she put her natural ingenuity to the test time and time again. Even though her unquenchable curiosity did lead to some small apartment fires, a few broken appliances, and a beaker explosion from time to time, she ultimately completed the Creative Genius aspiration and gained the "Idea Person" trait. That being said, she has always had a strong sense of purpose, wanting to put that perfect combination of smarts and creativity to work: that's why she decided she would dedicate her life to inventing and ultimately helping better the environment when she was around 12 years old.

High School came with a plethora of social challenges for Ciara: even though she was (and still is) extremely bubbly and bafflingly smart, she sometimes had trouble relating to people her age and understanding social expectations. Some kids picked on her for being too nerdy or too involved in class, others found her too talkative and "annoying," assuming her curious nature and positive attitude must be "fake." (Honestly, she was just neuro-divergent and didn't know it yet! She, in my opinion, didn't get evaluated by a profession until she was out of highschool and would ultimately be diagnosed as a combo of autism - toward the "high functioning" end - and ADHD). She found herself hanging out in teacher's classrooms more than not, usually not invited to big parties and doing her best to avoid social events like Prom as much as possible. However, she did have a small group of good friends, fortunately... so it definitely wasn't all bad! (She even went to the same college and was roommates with one of them!) Because she poured most of her free time into extracurriculars and schoolwork, she graduated at the top of her class and was given the honor of valedictorian!

Although she grew up in the city, she's 100% not attached to city living! She would love living somewhere with fresh air and lots of sunshine, especially if that meant she would have extra space to tinker and brainstorm! Plus, as an environmental enthusiast and "Civil Designer," she cares about inventing and finding affordable, healthy, safe innovations that work for all kinds of communities: that's a job she can do from anywhere!

Ciara never backs down from a challenge, but potentially competing for love might be the scariest one she's faced yet. She has never had a serious relationship and has never actually been in love, even though she eagerly puts her heart on her sleeve and has come close before. Could Ofelia be her soulmate? Ciara has crunched the numbers, and the stats say there's a slim chance: a 20% chance of success and an 80% chance at heartbreak, to be exact...

but that's a risk she's just might be willing to take. ❤️
