Rewatching Doctor Who’s ‘Utopia’ (I still think the Master instinctively grabbing the Doctor by the hand and running with him once again is unbearably tragic) and it’s honestly hilarious and sweet that the Doctor smiling at and agreeing with him is what first sets the drum flashbacks going in the Master’s head (aside from the discussion of space travel). Those two are so normal about each other, even fobwatched 😭.

I think Lizzie behaves the way she does in daily life (girlish, a bit annoying, overly obsessed with cute things) in large part because she has so strongly internalized the idea that that is how she should behave. It's pretty cut and dry comphet stuff. What's interesting to me though is the way she very clearly tells us in Campania arc that that is not how she thinks and behaves internally. She is interested in protecting others, self-discipline, and her duty. I think the cutesy act is a product of trauma not in the sense that she blames her inability to be cute for anything bad happening, but in that it's all she's been taught, so she uses it as an easy and practiced facade to present to the world while clearly working even harder in private to be good with a sword, good at acting her part, good at knowing things that might help her loved ones. I sincerely hope that she fucking snaps and prioritizes herself for once as this mess with the twins unfolds. She deserves way better than either of their cursed asses.

Captain Jack Harkness - You’re a chill guy but your military involvement and the fact that you can’t die are kinda red flags for me, not gonna lie.

Alright, I'll say it: Jack Harkness and the Doctor's relationship is possibly the most fleshed out/complicated dynamic in Doctor Who and that is INCLUDING the master/doctor relationship. Seriously, think about it:

the fact that when they meet jack is presented as sleazy con man and the doctor makes him brave- makes him good

but that they are both willing to die for rose as long as she is safe

and then she comes back and dooms them both to live (even though jack has already died for her and the doctor WILL die for her)

(ninerosejack is canon and you cannot convince me otherwise)

but then the doctor sees jack as immortal as someone he COULD spend the rest of his life with

and instead of embracing it like you'd think he would because he is so wrecked by people leaving him/being left by him the doctor RUNS bc the Doctor is so scared of jack of what he means of what he is

jack ends up abandoned in dalek dust goes back in time to find the doctor suffers a hundred years alone/being tortured but STILL WAITS

(screw amy being the girl who waited or rory being the boy who waited- Jack Harkness is the boy who waited and he did it FIRST)

Jack finds out that he was abandoned. that the man that he loves HATES the sight of him. that the doctor would rather have a genocidal murderer than have him

and so Jack gets the hell out of dodge to go to a man who DOES love him

and don't get me wrong Jack loves Ianto and Jack DOES remember Ianto until he dies as the Face of Boe don't forget that (protecting Novice Hame from the virus as he couldn't Ianto

BUT AFTER EVERYTHING THE DOCTOR HAS DONE TO JACK JACK STILL LOVES THEM

Jack still considers five billion years cursed to never die to be BETTER than the alternative: dying a young time-agent-turned-con-man

Jack has more reason than any other companion save maybe Amy to hate the Doctor & yet spends 20 years in jail to rescue Thirteen still LOVES HER

AND AFTER FIVE BILLION YEARS HE ORGANIZES THAT FIRST MEETING ON SATELLITE FIVE HE ORGANIZES 9/ROSE'S FIRST DATE

jack harkness is a living ghost a reminder of the doctor's failures a physical fixed point and yet he still loves the girl who cursed him and the time lord that turned him into the kind of person that would give his dying breaths to protect the last of humanity in a dying city and tell the doctor that he is not alone

because fuck it, YANA was a warning but also a reminder a final gift

jack had been there all along, a ghost an echo a PROMISE

there is no more human character than jack harkness

I don't care if Malleus ends up wearing starched suit and tie complete with shiny bedroom shoes and a bedroom tophat later. I'll find a way to draw him with a chest window like all Malleus spouses deserve.

Also whenever I come across artists seriously trying to predict what his pajama would be, 80% of them would actually give him a plunging neckline. BECAUSE HELLO. He'd look so good like that but Yana thinks she should gatekeep his chest for some reason.

fun fact about the beans day events!

According to her recent Twitter posts, Beans Day/Beansfest is memorable to Yana because she was able to create the entire event (including the story, costumes, and cards). Usually there is a different person responsible for writing the events, but since Beans Day/Beansfest was the first ever event for Twisted Wonderland, Yana was asked to handle it. She was also responsible for the second Beans Day/Beansfest event, since it is very much tied to the first and has a story which runs concurrent with the first one's.

Yana also tells us that she enjoys writing about characters getting serious about something that the audience may find pointless. This is reflected in how seriously the NRC students take the game, and is also demonstrated in Black Butler, which often features short interludes where the large cast of characters are getting up to some silly shenanigans while the overall narrative is far darker.

A lot of this makes sense in retrospect; Beans Day/Beanfest just felt very different from other story events, as it is the one of the few events (outside of the Halloween events) where the entire NRC student cast is heavily involved and has their key part to play rather than just brief asides. It's also the one I believe that Yuu is the most "involved" in the conflict and its resolution.

When Pomefiore first came out on the JP server a few years ago, I genuinely thought that Neige's cutesiness was just an act and that he was far darker behind closed doors. But, nope. Turns out that Neige is completely "what you see is what you get", and that really threw me off. I'm not the only one. I'm not the only one. Other fic writers in this fandom like LeaderPinhead have said that they thought the same thing.

While it's fine that Yana never went in that direction, she never did anything with his character either. He's just a cardboard cutout for Vil to sneer at and literally nothing else. It's so bad that Vil ironically is the better Snow White analog. Vil is similar to her personality wise, being hardworking, adaptable, assertive and at times kind. He has plenty of flaws like being overly domineering, being too blunt and harsh among other things, but that's a good thing. Those negative traits only make him feel like a real person and a modern male version of Snow White. Neige's similarities are limited to only his looks. His backstory makes no sense and comes right out of nowhere. (Seriously, why wasn't he and the dwarves taken in by Child Protective Services, if he was a minor in modern times?) That's such a waste to me. Neige is the antagonist of the Pomefiore arc, so there should be more to him than that.

However, if I wrote this story, I would do just that. Make Vil the one based on Snow White and Neige is based on the Evil Queen, being like Maurice Cole from Black Butler.

While I haven't read Black Butler, from what I heard from one of my friends and after watching a summary video of the Public School Arc, Cole is Redmond's helper (not using the manga's term because it's a slur). He has a cutesy demeanor, coming off as courteous and polite. He is beloved in the school. Behind closed doors, he's the worst, and, in all honesty, is like a modern version of the Evil Queen. He's a vain asshole, who hates hard work, and frequently leaves his duties to those beneath him. He is willing to resort to underhanded methods to get what he wants. When someone does something better than him, he will make sure to knock them down.

Why couldn't Neige be more like that? Don't get me wrong. I don't think Neige should've been a copy and paste of that other character. Hell, I would argue that differentiating them is a good thing. Not only to change things up, but according to that same friend, he's boring and lazily written. Plus, I don't see Neige doing one of Cole's despicable actions being ever greenlit by Disney. But I think giving Neige some of those same traits would be a step in the right direction. That way he would have a personality and be an actual threat to Vil.

I have seen a lot of people say similar things about their expectations for Neige actually.

You've made a very thoughtful entry here, and I will leave it mostly for others to read and respond to because I think this is an interesting conversation to be had.

My own thoughts are short, that I definitely like the idea of Neige being more characterized so that he can be more of, you know, a character, but I never really liked the idea of him being secretly nasty. I feel like there's too much stock in the corruption of innocence and really would like to have a character as straightforward and just nice as Snow White was--though to be fair we do have Kalim already so people might not want another character too similar to him. In any case maybe a fun idea would be Vil being paranoid about Neige like "No one of his celebrity is that nice!" and part of his beef with him is being annoyed by the idea that Neige is just that genuine. TWST fails at making much out of that rivalry though. With Yana's writing history for Black Butler and such I don't blame people for thinking there should have been a darker side here.
