Mutually toxic Killermare.

Yes! I love Killermare where they're actually just horrible for each other. I'm not great at writing it but reading it is so fun.

NM having a little savior complex, Killer being his proof that he can save someone too, he can nurture something, love something. Killer being terribly, aggressively infatuated with him. Nightmare saved him! This is what he owes him. He hurts himself to feed NM and tells him it's because he loves him so so much. Nightmare being angry with him and not knowing how to express that he doesn't WANT killer to do that. Not for him, not for anything. He feels so out of control and he can't think of anything to do but hurt him in retaliation, trying to teach him not to do that with pain, but only giving Killer more of what he wants. It's a terrible awful cycle, and neither of them know how to get out of it.

Sometimes the mania clears up and Killer is just a lump in bed, wondering why he does this, why Night does this... why they can't be better. Sometimes Nightmare feels the sorrow and hopelessness and just lays with him, wondering if there's some world out there where they're better than this. Where they know how to be more than this...

They're sad and awful and terrible 💖

Around 3 years ago I had some anxiety issues, one of the main things that I thought it wasn't self harm for so long was the fact that when something that involved other people went wrong because of a choice of mine (even just minor inconveniences) the pain of guilt was so strong that to turn it down I had to physically sting my skin with my nails. (I play guitar, so I always have a hand with longer nails to play arpeggio). Never it went to the point that it would bleed, but bc of that I thought It was no problem. Thanks to my therapist I know that just because it wasn't the "typical" self harm doesn't mean it wasn't a serious issue.

All of this to say that I might be projecting a little. And honestly I can't even imagine how terrible Wukong might feel everytime the guilt comes back to him...

the "calculated recklessness" line here is in reference to ctommys way of self harm during the exile arc where he would purposefully take damage in situations where it was easily avoidable. specifically it is about how he excused those behaviors as him being reckless or unprepared.

he's purposefully looking forward here instead of at the fish he's cutting, and ends up hurting himself as a result.
