some project ASXS gifs with a couple of the original Sonic X-Treme concept gifs as well.
Will we ever see ASXS? Will we see Z-Treme or Sonic X-Treme Unity rise to actually create the mouth watering physics promised to us Sega faithful nearly 20 years ago?
I'm holding out hope.
There's no fanbase on the planet as skilled or as determined as the SEGA and SONIC fans.

Sega Saturn - SEGA AGES Volume 5 Rouka ni Ichidant-R
Title: SEGA AGES Volume 5 Rouka ni Ichidant-R / SEGA AGES 廊下にイチダントアール
Developer/Publisher: Sega CS1 / Kuusoukagaku Corp. / Studio Cliche
Release date: 27 December 1996
Catalogue No.: GS-9043
Genre: Compilation / Variety / Quiz
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is pretty much just the same as Sega Ages Volume 1 - Shukudai Ga Tant-R which in turn is pretty much the same as the newer Puzzle & Action games. Puzzle & Action Ichidant-R also saw a release on the Mega Drive and Game Gear; this disc comes with a bonus quiz game called Quiz Rouka ni Tattenasai. So basically, just like Sega Ages Volume 1 - Shukudai Ga Tant-R we have an action puzzle section and a quiz section. It's hard to recommend this title to non-collectors since there are newer versions available for the Saturn which look much nicer than this one. Still, for its time this was a very good party game.

Bought Sonic 2 (Sega Ages) | Tuesday, 08.06.24
I'm about to call it a night, but let me tell you this:
I bought Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit game) on my Nintendo Switch a few hours ago at a cheap price. Plays almost like the original game, except for that 100-ring challenge mode.

Nintendo Switch eShop Deals - Merry Christmas!
Nintendo has one heck of a sale right now on their eShop for the Switch. I’ve covered many of these games on my YouTube channel. Some of the greats are in the NeoGeo and Arcade Archives. Of course SEGA is well represented as well, with both SEGA Ages and Sonic the Hedgehog. What’s your favorite? My coverage is in the hyperlinks below: The Games ACA NeoGeo Aero Fighters 2 – $3.99 (was…

Ok so I try to not gripe much on here, but I'm going to make an exception today. Sega AGES Virtua Racing is a good port, no denying that. It has a few issues, but they're so minor they aren't worth complaining about. They don't have any of the Virtua Racing Deluxe stuff, but whatever, it's still a good port of the arcade game.
Well part of that last statement is a lie. There is one thing from Virtua Racing Deluxe, the replay music is a remix of the replay music from Deluxe. This bothers me a lot. Seeing as the game has none of Deluxe's extra features, it feels like a bit of slap in the face. But meh, at least it's excused by the fact it's the only replay song in the game's port library right?
That's not true either. There's a Virtua Racing port to the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, no 32x adapter, just a (rather large) cartridge with the SVP chip inside it. Excuse the blurriness of that video, this port uses extreme dithering, so the game actually looks better this way.
This SVP chip port doesn't have the extras of Deluxe, it's a visually simplified port of the arcade version with a few minor extras, notably in this case: Replays with distinct new music composed for them. This music, as you can hear, is actually pretty good, but no one ever acknowledges it because of Deluxe's replay music existing.
In the lead up to the Sega AGES Switch version, I was hoping for Deluxe extras to be present (who wasn't?) but being realistic, I was at least hoping that the Genesis music would get some acknowledgement. That port goes out of its way to resemble the arcade version of Virtua Racing as much as it can. I wasn't expecting stuff like all the menus and mirror mode courses implemented, heck I wasn't even expecting all the music to be implemented, but I was hoping that at least one of those new songs would make the cut to draw attention to this under represented soundtrack, but nada.
What makes it even worse for me is that the Genesis port follows the Arcade version's musical stylings with its new music, but Deluxe creates its own musical styling, and the result is that the Deluxe replay music sounds very out of place in the soundtrack of the Sega AGES Switch version of Virtua Racing. It's just such a stupid mistake, yes, mistake, and it still makes me mad years later.

I will never understand why SEGA refuses to put their SEGA Ages games on anything other than the Switch.
I just saw that OutRun is currently just $1.99 on the Switch and it just annoyed the hell out of me. Why in the world would you only put these retro titles on one platform?
I guess SEGA doesn't want my money...so I will just find other means to play their old games for free.

Sega Saturn - SEGA AGES Volume 4 After Burner II
Title: SEGA AGES Volume 4 After Burner II / SEGA AGES アフターバーナーII
Developer/Publisher: Sega AM2 / Rutubo Games / Sega CS1
Release date: 27 September 1996
Catalogue No.: GS-9109
Genre: Dog Fight Sim / Shooting
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you've never played Afterburner II, then you have never lived the life of a real gamer (^v^) Afterburner II was the first ever flight shooting game to get the adrenalin pumping. I remember playing the full-sized hydraulic arcade five years ago and still finding it a rush over so many years after its original release. The Sega Saturn version offers all that the arcade does minus the hydraulics. Don't worry though, it's still an awesome game. In fact, I'd say that the Saturn version is better than the Dreamcast version that can be found on Shenmue 1 and 2 and also on Yuu Suzuki's Game Works. I don't know why but the game just feels better on the Saturn. Both versions are very close to being arcade-perfect, but the Saturn version wins in my book. Maybe it's because it suits the Saturn more? The only downside to the Saturn Afterburner II I can find is that it's not possible to continue. Lose all your lives, and it's game over. I'm sure there's a cheat to allow continuing though.

"Shadow the hedgehog is a G.U.N. Agent because he supports the government" ❌❌❌ "Shadow the hedgehog is a G.U.N. Agent because he is still recovering from the sudden death of his best friend and his major screw up aboard the ARK that almost left billions dead and is struggling to find direction and to trust his own judgement to do the right thing to protect the Earth and therefore places his faith in an institution that is much bigger than him and thinks they know better than he does" ✅✅✅
