Getting Rasberry Pi up and running

I am using a NOOB version for getting up and running with the Rasberry Pi. The version of my Raspberry Pi is 3 Model B (see below):

Format a micro SD card

For formatting the micro SD card I usually use the gparted utility in Ubuntu. Format the micro SD with FAT 32 filesystem format. You need to have a SD card reader for attaching the SD card to the PC. I use the below SD card and the reader for my purposes:

Once you have attached your SD card with the linux PC you are ready to format it. I am using a Ubuntu PC for my purposes. Go to the console and run the below command:

~$ sudo gparted

By default the gparted selects your hard drive (/dev/sda is actually your hard drive, did you know!). Be very cautious, not to play around with your hard drive partitions, you might soon get into a funny situation. So go to the top right corner of the gparted screen and change the drive from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb (if there are no other media attached to the PC). Look at the various field carefully and try to understand what they are. I cannot go into the details of all the fields here. What we are up to is delete everything in the SD card and get it ready for the NOOBS. I can see the below in my SD card (/dev/sdb) at the moment:

You can also see the same partitions with lsblk command on the console, I can see the below:

I want to get rid of all of these. So what I do in gparted screen is to select/highlight each partition, right click, and then Unmount. Once the selected/highlighted partition has been Unmounted, you can right click and Delete it. Unmount and Delete each of these partitions in the SD card. Now Click on the green Tick at the top of the gparted screen and Apply. At this point you would have unallocated partition like this:

Right click on the Unallocated partition and click on New. Leave everything as default except Filesystems as FAT32, the default is ext4.

After changing the file systems type it should look like the below:

Click Add. Then again click on the green Tick button at the top, then Apply. Once done, you should see something like the below:

Now, close gparted and go back to your favourite file browser and locate the SD card, in my case it shows something like the below, an empty drive:

Get hold of the NOOBS

Go to the below link:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

Click on the Download ZIP and you will get the latest vesion of the NOOBS. Or if you need a different NOOBS version other than the latest, you can get a copy of that in the below link:

http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/NOOBS/images/

For my purposes I have download the NOOBS_v3_2_1 version (NOOBS_v3_2_1.zip) from the above link. Choose the one you need and move to the next step.

Once you have downloaded the NOOB version you want, extract the NOOBS and you should have a folder called something like NOOBS_*_*. In my case it is NOOBS_v3_2_1. Go inside the folder using your file browser, select and copy everything (Ctrl-A, Ctr-C). Go back to the SD card and do a Ctrl-V. This will copy and paste everything that the NOOBS_v3_2_1 had into the SD card.

Be patient, it takes a while to copy the stuffs across into the SD card. I often make mistake of prematurely eject the drive and nothing works! So be patient! There is a circular progress bar is whirling around at the top on the file browser window, if you have noticed. Once everything copied into the SD card, safely eject the drive and insert it into the SD card slot in Pi.

Now, connect the below to the Pi:

A keyboard.

A monitor/TV

A mouse (very useful)

Connect the Pi using micro USB cable to the PC to power it up.

Once you have powered the Pi, the NOOBS will take care of booting the device and soon you should see something like this on the Monitor:

Select the Raspberry Pi Full option from the menu shown above. You will require at least ~8GB I guess. Other option is to select the LibreELEC_RPi2 which I won’t recommend at this point. After you select one option from the menu, the “install” button will get activated. Click on Install. See the below pictures for reference:

Once you have clicked on the Install the installation starts:

Wait for the installation to finish. After the installation the setup wizard comes up, follow the screens and setup the Country, Language and Timezone etc. Keep the default user account ‘pi’ and password ‘raspberry’. It may ask for restart, do restart.

Find the kernel version of NOOBS installation

Go to Pi and open a terminal. Then type the below: pi@raspberrypi:~ $ uname -a Linux raspberrypi 4.19.75-v7+ #1270 SMP Tue Sep 24 18:45:11 BST 2019 armv7l GNU/Linux In the above it shows the kernel version this NOOBS installation has is 4.19.75-v7+. Now, for cross compilation we need the exact version of the Kernel source code, otherwise we will get the below error: pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo insmod GobiNet.ko insmod: ERROR: could not insert module GobiNet.ko: Invalid module format Linux kernels for Raspberry Pi is located here:

https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux

By default the one coming right now is version 4.19.y. This doesn’t exactly match with the one we need i.e. 4.19.75-v7+. Next you can look into the Branches here:

https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/branches

However, I cannot see the exact match. So now I look into the Releases tab. This looks like has the one we want:

https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/releases

In this page I can see the Kernel release which was on the 24th Sep, 2019. This exactly matches with the one in NOOBS: pi@raspberrypi:~ $ uname -a Linux raspberrypi 4.19.75-v7+ #1270 SMP Tue Sep 24 18:45:11 BST 2019 armv7l GNU/Linux

Download this Kernel source code in your local machine (Ubuntu in my case). The tarball is called linux-raspberrypi-kernel_1.20190925-1.tar.gz. Extract the tarball with the below command: tar -xvf linux-raspberrypi-kernel_1.20190925-1.tar.gz In my setup after extraction the linux source is located in the below path: /home/vbhadra/Downloads/linux-raspberrypi-kernel_1.20190925-1 Now, go inside the linux kernel source folder and do th below: cd /home/vbhadra/Downloads/linux-raspberrypi-kernel_1.20190925-1 make mrproper This will ensure we have started with a clean kernel source. Now, come to your Pi again. What we need now is the kernel configuration which was used for the NOOBS kernel compilation. The Kernel configuration now a days kept in the kernel itself as a module. So to grab hold of the kernel .config file do the below in Pi: pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo modprobe configs pi@raspberrypi:~ $ zcat /proc/config.gz > /tmp/.config Copy this .config file in a sd card and bring it back to the Ubuntu PC where your downloaded Kernel source tree lives. Then copy the .config file into the linux kernel source tree as below: vbhadra@vbhadra-8200-elit-convertable-microtower:~/Downloads/linux-raspberrypi-kernel_1.20190925-1$ sudo mount /dev/sdb1 ~/usb/ vbhadra@vbhadra-8200-elit-convertable-microtower:~/Downloads/linux-raspberrypi-kernel_1.20190925-1$ ls -la ~/usb/ total 748 -rw-r--r-- 1 vbhadra vbhadra 163003 Sep 26 02:23 .config vbhadra@vbhadra-8200-elit-convertable-microtower:~/Downloads/linux-raspberrypi-kernel_1.20190925-1$ cp ~/usb/.config .

Download the Pi toolchain

You will need the toolchain to cross compile the Kernel and your module for Pi environment. Download the toolchain from the git hub with the below command: git clone https://github.com/raspberrypi/tools ~/tools Locate where your tools folder is. I usually create a rpi folder in my home folder and do everything there. So in my setup it is located here: /home/vbhadra/rpi/tools Now, you need to point where your tools (cross compiler) is for compiling the kernel. To do that do the below: export CCPREFIX=/home/vbhadra/rpi/tools/arm-bcm2708/arm-bcm2708-linux-gnueabi/bin/arm-bcm2708-linux-gnueabi- Compile the kernel to create the Module.symvers file. To compile the kernel do the below in your Ubuntu setup: make ARCH=arm CROSS\_COMPILE=${CCPREFIX} -j 12 Let the above compile the Kernel which will take a while, wait patiently!

Now check if you have got a file created called in your linux folder: vbhadra@vbhadra-8200-elit-convertable-microtower:~/Downloads/linux-raspberrypi-kernel_1.20190925-1$ ls -la Module.symvers -rw-r--r-- 1 vbhadra vbhadra 841463 Feb 12 13:31 Module.symversCross

Compile your module

I am trying to cross compile GobiNet and GobiSerial drivers fro SieraWireless LTE device EM7565.

You can grab hold of the driver rom SieraWireless website. This is not about any specific driver and their intricacies. We will only focus on the important bits to cross compile any custom driver for Raspberry Pi (hw version 3 B).

So One you have any driver code which has been compiled for any other platform (possibly) and you want to cross compile it, first thing you should do is to look at the driver Makefile. In this case, I have the below driver Makefile for GobiNet driver:

2017 Week 1 Preview

Welcome to the NFL season. Maybe it can keep your mind off the fact that the world is burning and drowning at the same time and nazis are everywhere and there is a racist sexual predator in charge of America and North Korea didn’t watch War Games as a kid and the bees are disappearing.

KC 24 - 31 NE -- Game to Watch -- I’m choosing to view this as a good thing because one of my least favorite teams has to lose. Some people are pointing out that Andy Reid has a great record when he has more than a week to prep, but y’all, so does Belichick. There is precedent for the Chiefs kicking the living shit out of the Pats, but I don’t see it this time, not on the night where those jackasses get to bathe in their own self-importance and Super Bowl “highlights.”

JAX 20 - 27 HOU -- Lock It Up -- I’m by no means high on the Texans this year, and I don’t fancy their offense against the Jags D. But this is gonna feel like that Gleason game in the Superdome, and the Jaguars are good at fucking things up even when they are not astounding emotional underdogs. JJ Watt and Jadeveon Clowney will both be waiting to make Leonard Fournette’s NFL welcome not so welcoming. Maybe they’ll injure Bortles and Jacksonville will have to start an actual QB... If you can call Chad Henne that...

PHI 30 - 28 WSH -- Game to Watch -- -- Unpopular Opinion -- I spent the last year playing the Eagles on Madden franchise so you’ll have to forgive me if I’m a bit bullish on them. I may forget that in real life they don’t have 2,000-yard rusher and 3-time MVP Melvin Jolly in the backfield, or that Fletcher Cox has yet to be enshrined in the Pre Football Hall of Fame. In fact, Carson Wentz has zero Super Bowl rings, as opposed to the six he has garnered on my xbox! Still, the biggest factor for the Eagles last year was Lane Johnson. Before his injury they were 4-1, after they were like 3-8. That combined with Washington’s lack of pass rush means we might not yet have to worry about whether Philly can run the ball. The reverse is true on the other side: Washington’s stout o-line and the Eagles’ strong front seven cancel each other out, leaving Kirk Cousins throwing into an admittedly patchy secondary with no help from the ground game. I like the rivalry game, and I’ll give it to the up-and-comers.

NYJ 21 - 18 BUF -- Unpopular Opinion -- I know Tyrod Taylor technically cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol, but you can’t convince me he’s at 100%, or that the debut of the Rick Dennison offense in Buffalo won’t be a nightmare. This is exactly the kind of game the Josh McCown Browns would win, and it’s one I think his Jets will too. I just don’t see a lot of movement from Buffalo, whose list of weapons has been whittled down to two.

OAK 24 - 28 TEN -- Unpopular Opinion -- -- Game to Watch -- Time for Tennessee to Prove It. There’s no defense I would rather go against in a Prove It game than Oakland. I could easily see Marcus Mariota shredding them. If I wasn't a total whip I would be starting him this week in fantasy instead of Aaron Rodgers. Both of these QBs are young and coming off of injuries. I am excited by this. They also have aging runners trying to stave off younger bucks. I think if Marshawn is gonna be good, it’s gonna be early in the season. In the end, despite being outcoached, I think the Titans watch up great against Oakland and extract an important, top-shelf win at home.

BAL 23 - 27 CIN Such a close game I predict and yet I am not too interested in this game. We’ll see if Flacco is better, but anything else this game reveals could easily be a fluke. In the end, Cincy has dominated the Ravens at home for awhile, and I don’t like where Baltimore is at the moment. If the Bengals can find even one small area of leverage, they’ll find the win.

ARI 31 - 21 DET -- Game to Watch -- -- Lock It Up -- Low-key important game featuring two potential NFC Wild Card teams. The difference will be that one is a team and the other is Matt Stafford gunning his way to an exhausted .500+ despite having to max out the potential of the rest of the roster to get there. I think we might see a big game from Larry Fitzgerald. The Lions don’t seem to be set up to cover him.

ATL 26 - 20 CHI -- Survivor -- Some smart people think this is gonna be a tough out for Atlanta, and yet I give them my highest confidence Survivor designation. Am I stupid? Or am I just banking on Julio Jones making quick work of Chicago’s iffy secondary and Mike Glennon coming back to earth after an excellent preseason?

PIT 35 - 20 CLE -- Lock It Up -- Gonna add a name to the Cleveland QB Jersey of Doom! Kizer, your time on the clock starts now. We get a Joe Hayden revenge game in quick turnaround, and unfairly it will come against a Browns team that will be missing #1 overall pick Myles Garrett. That just bites for football in general. This will be LeVeon Bell’s first-ever Week 1 start, thanks to injuries and a league system that still for some reason punishes players for pot use. Who runs this thing, Jeff Sessions? Anyway, Bell might pass 100 yards by halftime. Something to watch, though, is that Roethlisberger historically struggles in Cleveland. I mean not as much as Cleveland’s quarterbacks do, but he does struggle.

IND 12 - 21 LAR -- NFL Title Belt (IND) -- The NFL Title Belt enters the season on inauspicious terms, ready to be wrested from Scott Tolzien’s hands by the Aaron Donald-less Rams defense. I will be shocked if Indy pulls this off, the only reason I don’t have it as a lock is that I don’t trust the Rams as far as I can throw them, or as far as Jared Goff could throw the ball last season without getting intercepted.

SEA 36 - 28 GB -- Unpopular Opinion -- -- Game to Watch -- I’m fucking excited for this game. You get the Bennett Brothers facing off in the middle of an emotional situation for Michael. You get Sheldon Richardson’s debut. You get Eddie Lacy’s revenge(?). You get the revenge game for the Packers’ stomping that was itself revenge for the NFC title game comeback AND the failed revenge for the Final Mary AND the Fail Mary itself. You get Aaron Rodgers facing an LoB that has no significant injuries for the first time since said NFC title game. Y’all, be pumped. The Seahawks will play passionate because of the Bennett stuff, they will refuse to let GB run, and they will execute their defensive scheme which we know can disrupt Rodgers when it’s done right.

CAR 29 - 27 SF This is a worrisome game, and if it’s SF’s I will be kicking myself. Cam is coming off an injury that lasted all offseason, their secondary sucks, Kyle Shanahan gets to debut his career at home, and the Niners have a weird streak of winning on kickoff weekend. The Panthers have to travel all the way across the country, and on top of that, don’t underestimate the memory of SB50. We saw how pumped the Broncos got playing here in the preseason. But just look at the names of the players and tell me again how San Fran pulls this one off, eh? If nothing else, Christian McCaffrey and Greg Olsen can blow this one open.

NYG 23 - 26 DAL Again? Yo, NFL, stop it with this shit. Look, I want to believe that the Giants will stymie the Cowboys AGAIN and Eli will take advantage of his new weapons and the Cowboys will be exposed, but I don’t think so. Mostly I just dread the coverage of Zeke. Can this just... Not? If Odell doesn’t play I might not even watch, even though it’s the only game today that I’ll be home for.

NO 31 - 27 MIN -- Game to Watch -- The return of Adrian Peterson! Which means he’s good for at least one devastating fumble and at least one run with 5+ broken tackles, along with something stupid he says to the media after the game. This is strength on strength for sure: the Saints offense against the Vikings defense should excite. It may be on the road but the indoor vibe of the Vikings’ stadium is Drew Bree's-Friendly. On the other side, both units have to be improved from last year to make any impact. I like the Saints’ multiple layers of defensive improvement better than the Vikings’ strategy of “throw Dalvin Book at the wall and see if he sticks” so... Whodat!

LAC 16 - 19 DEN -- Game to Watch -- So get this: Not only is this the first game to feature two black head coaches in their debut games, but those coaches GREW UP AS NEIGHBORS IN AURORA COLORADO and then were TEAMMATES ON THE BRONCOS. How on earth does that happen!?!?!? Anyway, usually I would pick a loss for either of these teams since they are new coaches who I don’t honestly have a ton of faith in, but they can’t both lose so I’m kinda gonna go with the It’s Easier To Coach At Home In Denver Than Away At Denver. As you can probably guess, that is one CJ Anderson TD and then four Brandon McManus FGs I have for Denver on the board, not exactly a runaway game. This is a low-key Mike McCoy re-revenge game, as he was stolen from DEN to HC in SD but then had to come back to OC for us after LA showed him the door. I’ll be interested to see how this whole team looks under new coaching, especially since I would at this point consider the Chargers more talented across the board. If we can’t stop the run (like last year) it’ll be tough to squeak one out. I know we have a lot of guys injured up front, but somehow I still like the pieces we’re gonna put out there, and by the time we’re running out of depth the Chargers will be gassed from the altitude. Either way, should be an interesting start (in primetime, no less) to both the Vance Joseph and Anthony Lynn eras.

GRAMMY® Award-winning, acclaimed alternative rock pioneers The Smashing Pumpkins today announced the Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour, their first tour in nearly 20 years to feature founding members Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin, and James Iha. Produced by Live Nation, the 36-city tour will kick off in Glendale, AZ on July 12, 2018 and visit North American arenas throughout the summer. Tickets for the Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour will go on sale to the general public starting next Friday, February 23 at 10:00am local time and be available at www.smashingpumpkins.com, LiveNation.com, and via the Live Nation App. “Some 30 years ago, as The Smashing Pumpkins, James Iha and I began a musical journey in the cramped rear bedroom of my Father's house. And so it's magic to me that we're able to coalesce once more around the incredible Jimmy Chamberlin, to celebrate those songs we've made together,” shared Corgan. The Mi 11 Ultra recently debuted in the China markets, but we are unsure if the exact variants will also be launched in the Indian market. Reports also suggest that the Mi 11X and Mi 11X Pro will be the rebranded version of Redmi K40 and Redmi K40 Pro+.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra expected specifications

As per the China variant, Mi 11 Ultra will feature a 6.8-inch 120 Hz QHD+ AMOLED display that features an in-display fingerprint scanner. The smartphone is expected to be powered by Snapdragon 888 chipset and offer up to 12 GB RAM and up to 512 GB of internal storahe. It is likely to run on MIUI 12.5 based on Android 11.

In terms of camera, Mi 11 Ultra will feature a triple rear camera setup that houses a 50 MP primary sensor, a 48 MP ultra wide angle lens and a 48 MP periscope lens. The camera module will also include a 1.1-inch AMOLED display with 294 x 126 pixel resolution. This display aims to show notifications to the user. For selfies, the smartphone is expected to come with a 20 MP front camera.

Mi 11 Ultra is likely to be equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 67 W charging, 67 W wireless charging and 10 W reverse wireless charging.

Reports suggest that the Mi 11X and Mi 11X Pro will be the rebranded version of Redmi K40 and Redmi K40 Pro+. Which means, we can expect the smartphones to come with 6.67-inch full HD+ AMOLED displays with 120 Hz refresh rates. Mi 11X could be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset, while the Mi 11X Pro could use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. We can expect the Mi 11X series to feature up to 8 GB RAM and up to 256 GB of storage.

Hail Sagan Releases Official Music Video "Stealing The Crown" And Announce Tour

Burbank, CA Electronic Rock artist Hail Sagan announce the release of the new video for their single “Stealing The Crown”.

“We wanted more of a fantasy feel to this compared to our debut video, Dark Cloud, which appeared with real life-style videography depicting scenes of bullying and violence. Though Stealing the Crown also confronts a dark subject matter, such as exploitation, greed, and disloyal people, the imaginative effects create more of a supernatural environment.” – Sagan Amery Vocalist

The video was directed by Mathew Crum and produced by Sagan Amery and Nick Quijano of Hail Sagan.

Hail Sagan has also announced their first set of tour dates with Mushroomhead on their North America tour.

D7200 vs D7500: Is It Worth the Upgrade?

Nikon’s recently announced D7500 has a peculiar mix of features from the D7200, the high-end D500, and the less expensive D5600. In some important ways it improves over its predecessor, in others it seems to be taking a step back. How much difference do these changes make, and which camera makes more sense for you? Let’s take a look.

To begin with, this chart shows the main features of both cameras, with the better features highlighted in green, though in some cases “better” is subjective.

The Body

From the front, changes don’t appear to be dramatic. The microphones have been moved from the top to either side of the lens mount, and Nikon opted for D5600-style strap loops.

While many of the features of the D7500 have been upgraded to match the D500, the body is now more like that of the less expensive D5600. Having eschewed the magnesium alloy back and top plates found in the rest of the D7000 series, the D7500’s unified frame and body are made entirely of plastics. This makes the D7500 lighter than previous models, and perhaps easier to weather-seal (sealing is very thorough on this model).

Along with the new body material are a variety of changes in design and layout, some minor (like the change in strap connectors and the location of the microphones), and some major, like the adoption of a new battery (EN-EL15a) and the loss of an SD card slot (down from 2 slots in the D7200 to just a lone slot).

Minor changes are visible on the camera tops: the dedicated metering mode button has been replaced with an ISO button, and the microphones have been moved to the front of the body. The top LCD is also smaller.

And, of course, the D7500 is the first in the series to include an articulated, touch-enabled LCD. This LCD is a case of “one step forward, one step back”, though; I had expected the D7500 to get the D500’s nice 2,359,000 pixel screen, but instead it’s been saddled with a 3.2″ 922,000 pixel LCD that has lower pixel density than the 3″ screen in the original D7000[1. The D7000 had a 921,000 pixel LCD, essentially the same, but it was a smaller screen at only 3.0″, making the pixel density greater]. The top LCD is also smaller.

The tilting screen of the D7500 can not be rotated to face forward, like that on the D5600.

Aside from the presence of the new tilt screen, the back of the D7500 is mostly unchanged from the D7200. The positions of the right info button and the live-view switch have been flipped.

The Sensors

Some people were surprised to discover that the D7500’s sensor has lower resolution (20.9 megapixels) than that of the older D7200 (24.3 megapixels). There are a few reasons why Nikon made this choice. (Click Headings to Expand)

First, and most importantly, is Nikon’s concentration on high-ISO performance with the D7500. More pixels on a sensor means smaller pixels. Smaller pixels collect less light, but the sensor’s electronics still generate background noise. This results in a worse signal to noise ratio (like a quiet voice talking in the car over the road noise), and thus, more digital noise in the image that results, especially at high ISOs (where the sensor tries to get by with even less light). The D7500 has fewer ‘pixels’ on its sensor, so they’re larger. As a result, the D7500 has a top native ISO of 51200, compared to the 25600 of the D7200: a full f-stop of difference. We’ve found that the D500 (which has the same sensor as the D7500) does not quite have a full f-stop of improvement in quality over the D7200 at high ISO. At ISO6400, the D7200’s noise is slightly better controlled (finer and smoother) than the D500’s is at ISO12800, though the difference is minimal, and the D500 has better contrast in the comparison. At one stop apart, they’re roughly comparable.

[/item] [item title=”Shooting Action”]Second, Nikon wanted to improve high-speed shooting performance to compete with cameras like the Canon 7D Mark II, which can shoot 10 frames per second. These frame rates produces a lot of data for any camera to deal with. At higher resolutions, cameras produce larger files, which are harder to move quickly through the data pipeline to storage on the SD card. A lower resolution sensor’s smaller files are easier for the camera to deal with at high speeds. These smaller files make it possible for the D7500 to shoot 8fps and get the data stored onto an SD card.

And finally, for most photographers, the difference in resolution between 21 and 24 megapixels just isn’t very significant in real-world use. Remember that most of us use computer monitors that are no larger than 4K resolution (about 8 megapixels), but the vast majority use full HD (1080p is just 2 megapixels), and very few photographers print these days. And if you’re resizing an image from 21 megapixels down to 10% of its original size, all of the fine differences in detail will be thrown out anyway. But if you do print? Then you’ll have to print LARGE to be able to see these differences… probably 16 x 24 inches or perhaps larger, and the differences even then will be minor. And that’s assuming that you are able to capture a difference to begin with. Only the sharpest lenses have high enough resolution to make a difference, and even then, only when shot from a tripod at the lens’ sharpest apertures, with no vibrations from the wind, ground, shutter, etc. A full frame sensor with the same pixel density of the D7500’s 20.9 megapixel sensor would hold 46.5 megapixels, and Nikon has already admitted that not many lenses can meet the demands of the D810’s 36 megapixel sensor.

Who will benefit from the higher resolution of the D7200? Landscape photographers often shoot in a manner that could make use of it, and so do some commercial/studio photographers and fine-art photographers. But journalists, event photographers, sports photographers, and hobbyists generally do not.

Speed & Action Performance

The D7200 was Nikon’s best APS-C camera for shooting action until the release of the D500, and while the D7500 does not match the D500, it certainly closes the gap. The D7200 can shoot at 6 frames per second, but if you’re shooting RAW, it can only shoot 18 shots in a row (3 seconds) before the buffer is full and it needs a break to write to the SD card. The D7500 improves on both metrics, shooting at 8 frames per second for bursts of 50 frames in a row (just over 6 seconds). The D500 takes that a step further, shooting 10 frames per second for up to 200 compressed RAW shots, but only when using an XQD card.

Of course, if you’re willing to shoot JPG, then the D7200 has no problem, as it is able to shoot bursts of at least 100 shots in that format.

The Nikon D7200 and D7500 both share the same AF point layout and autofocus module.

The autofocus system in the D7500 has not been changed; it uses the same 51-point (15-cross type) system as the D7200, while the D500’s system has a total of 153 AF points. However, Nikon claims that the same system in the D7500 will perform better than it does in the D7200 because of the new processor in the camera. This seems very unlikely to be a significant difference.

How important is this difference? Journalists, action photographers, event photographers, wildlife photographers, and anyone else who needs to capture images in copious quantities very quickly might find the extra two frames per second helpful, though casual action photographers will probably not need it. Portrait, landscape, product and commercial photographers? Probably not. Similarly, very few photographer (even those who shoot action) shoot bursts of more than 10-15 frames. The ability to do so will be important for the most dedicated action photographers (who should probably be looking at the D500 anyway), but probably not many others[7. When I was studying photojournalism in college in the mid 1990s, we were all still using film. Bursts of more than a few seconds could finish off an entire roll of film. Somehow, even the people who were lucky enough to be shooting Michael Jordan and Ken Griffey Jr. managed to produce amazing images with bursts of just 5 or 6 frames at a time]. You’ll know from your shooting style whether this will be important for you.

Video

It is tempting to just say “The Nikon D7500 can shoot 4K video and the D7200 can’t” and leave it at that. While the fact is true, there are some ugly details: I’ve said this all about the Nikon D500, and I’ll say it again for the D7500.

The D7500 shoots Full HD video much as you would expect, using the full width of the frame to capture 16:9, 1920 x 1080 video. You also have the option of capturing that video from a 1.3x cropped section of the sensor (which is, of course, already 1.5x cropped compared to an FX sensor).

However, when the D7500 captures 4K video, you are forced to use a cropped section of the sensor that is even smaller than the 1.3x cropped section that is optional at 1080p. It can be seen in our graphic, below:

4K Recording Area: The central rectangle is the only recording area available when shooting at 4K resolution. When shooting HD and Full HD, the full width and 1.3x crop areas are available.

This may be perfectly acceptable for those who only shoot telephoto video; it provides remarkably high resolution video and a roughly 1.5x crop, making a 200mm lens perform like a 450mm lens (1.5x crop + 1.5x crop). However, for those times when you want to shoot wide angle, you’ll need to use an ultra-wide angle lens just to get close; while a 16mm lens might normally give you a full-frame 24mm lens’s field of view, you’ll need an 11mm lens to get something almost equivalent if you’re shooting 4k.

So, if you’re looking for a camera just to shoot 4K video, the D7500 is hardly ideal.

However, if you’re mostly shooting 1080p or 720p, then the D7500 has one more trick up its sleeve: digital image stabilization, which can be used in conjunction with optical image stabilization. You will lose a little bit of the frame, but the sensor has plenty of resolution to spare, so there’s no loss in resolution, and the addition of digital stabilization goes a long way towards giving you smooth, jitter-free video. Like the D500, the D7500 will have electronic aperture control while shooting video, as well as exposure smoothing capabilities when moving from dark to bright areas (using auto ISO and electronic aperture control).

The Nikon D7200, unfortunately, does not have electronic aperture control, nor digital image stabilization. It does, however, have 1.3x crop mode, like the D500, and both can output video to an external recorder.

Flash

The WRR10 Flash controller connects to a side port of the camera… where you’d normally hold it. Most radio flash controllers connect to the flash hotshoe.

The Nikon D7200 does not support the new Nikon radio-controller (WR-R10/WR-A10) and SB-5000 flash system, which can control up to 18 speedlights. However, there are countless 3rd party radio-triggering systems already available on the market, from pro-level Pocket Wizards and the popular Yongnuo TTL models, Nissin Air 1 Commander and the Phottix Odin, so this should be only a minor consideration for most people.

Conclusions

The new features of the Nikon D7500 will primarily benefit photographers who shoot events and long bursts of action, particularly those who shoot them in low light with high ISO. Those photographers will get better performance with the D7500: better speed and less digital noise. This comes at the cost of slightly lower resolution. Photographers who wish to shoot 4K video and/or use a swivel screen may also find reason to choose the D7500.

However, if you normally shoot at low ISO, and if your primary interest is not fast moving action, then the D7200 will give you equally good results, and in some cases, it may give you better image quality. If you shoot with impeccable technique[8. This means shooting from a tripod, with mirror lock up, and a cable release or timer] with a top quality lens set in its sharpest aperture range, the D7200’s sensor is capable of capturing more detail than the D7500’s.

You Should Buy the Nikon D7500 If…

you plan to shoot a lot of action like: sports, news events, weddings, wildlife

you plan to shoot events in a dark setting: concerts, clubs, weddings, wildlife

you need to shoot 4K video, especially telephoto, or digitally stabilized HD Video

you want to use Nikon’s SB-5000 flashes and radio trigger system

you want a touch-screen and/or articulated rear LCD

You Should Buy the Nikon D7200 If…

you shoot landscapes or other detail oriented genres at low ISOs, including: studio portraits, product images, still-life works

you shoot action photography but don’t need a full 10 frames per second (the D7200 is a very capable action camera)

you shoot long events (or spend a long time in the field) and want better battery life

you want to save money on the body to buy better lenses (which is what I always recommend)
