The Cormac family were a moneyed lot; when the bombs dropped, you had best believe they were snug away in some of the best-kept vaults in the nation. Despite having a reputation to upkeep, the Cormacs have since found scandal nipping at their heels at every turn—especially only daughter Anne, born out of wedlock from an affair. Anne’s father’s wife divorced and left him, but in the small world of Vault 35, there wasn’t really anywhere to go. Judgement was cast on Anne long before she was even born.

Growing up under watchful—and usually disdainful—community eyes, Anne became rebellious and wild, deciding to live up to the hellion she felt predestined to be. At the conclusion of one memorably cruel community lecture, Anne’s father announced his shame in being related. Anne’s world crashed down in that moment, but, being sixteen and still a child, she acted out. Electing to be a burden on the Vault no more, Anne ran away that very night—something discovered hours later, when the security tag was found on the floor.

As luck would have it, there was a farm only a day’s worth of walking away. By the time Anne stumbled up the rubble of the driveway to the house, she was dehydrated and becoming delirious. The Mister Handy that had taken up residence there followed its primary programming, nursing the human life back to health. For three years, Anne and Mister Handy survived together, traveling when necessary and only when necessary.

Despite these precautions and others, when raiders did what they do best with a trade caravan Anne was traveling with, she was taken.

She was taken for sport to a raider colony, where she surpassed all expectation and won every fight they put her into. A sizable portion of the crowd crowed to throw her to a feral ghoul they kept in a nearby pit, but small-time raider boss James Bonny came to her defense and bought her for a bride before they could throw her in the pit. Anne was married over her protestations and suffered worse by the end of the night.

Anne was the war bride of a fourth-rate raider and treated like his bitch for the next two years of her life. On the night of their marriage she had sworn she’d slip free and murder him some night. He laughed then. It took two years, admittedly, but eventually he slipped up. Anne got her revenge and then some, lighting the night sky up with his camp once she was done.

Anne has talked her way into big towns and “settles” in them from time to time. She offers what she calls wasteland services, from parcel delivery to bounty hunting and everything in-between. It’s a high risk, high reward kind of lifestyle, but Anne’s finding it agrees with her quite well.

Update on Kiku

Been talking to an S2C practitioner and been playing video games as purposeful motor and unreliable body and speech have reduced some. Most reduce in unreliable body, still have unreliable speech but not as much recently.

Hope to do S2C sessions with practicioner soon, just have to see when have money for it. They made a set of sensory boards for us to try and we should get them soon.

forever tired of thorough medaocrity in the AAC business. how that is rewarded. How it fails us as users. how not robust and only robust by small small amount communication systems always chosen by speech therapists and funded by insurance.

forever tired of profit over people.

forever tired of how companies collect data on every word we’ve ever said and sell to people.

forever tired of paying to communicate. of how uninsured disabled people just don’t get a voice many of the time. or have to rely on how AAC is brought into classrooms — which usually is managed to do in every possible wrong way.

forever tired of the branding and rebranding of how we communicate. Of this being amazing revealation over and over that nonspeakers are “in there” and should be able to say things. of how every single time this revelation comes with pre condition of leaving the rest behind, who can’t spell or type their way out of the cage of ableist oppression. or are not given chance & resources to. Of the branding being seen as revolution so many times and of these companies & practitioners making money off this “revolution.” of immersion weeks and CRP trainings that are thousands of dollars and wildly overpriced letterboards, and of that one nightmare Facebook group g-d damm it. How this all is put in language of communication freedom. 26 letters is infinite possibilities they say - but only for the richest of families and disabled people. The rest of us will have to live with fewer possibilities.

forever tired of engineer dads of AAC users who think they can revolutionize whole field of AAC with new terrible designed apps that you can’t say anything with them. of minimally useful AI features that invade every AAC app to cash in on the new moment and not as tool that if used ethically could actually help us, but as way of fixing our grammar our language our cultural syntax we built up to sound “proper” to sound normal. for a machine, a large language model to model a small language for us, turn our inhuman voices human enough.

forever tired of how that brand and marketing is never for us, never for the people who actually use it to communicate. it is always for everyone around us, our parents and teachers paras and SLPs and BCBAs and practitioners and doctors and everyone except the person who ends up stuck stuck with a bad organized bad implemented bad taught profit motivated way to talk. of it being called behavior problems low ability incompetence noncompliance when we don’t use these systems.

you all need to do better. We need to democritize our communication, put it in our own hands. (My friend & communication partner who was in Occupy Wall Street suggested phrase “Occupy AAC” and think that is perfect.) And not talking about badly made non-robust open source apps either. Yes a robust system needs money and recources to make it well. One person or community alone cannot turn a robotic voice into a human one. But our human voice should not be in hands of companies at all.

(this is about the Tobii Dynavox subscription thing. But also exploitive and capitalism practices and just lazy practices in AAC world overall. Both in high tech “ mainstream “ AAC and methods that are like ones I use in sense that are both super stigmatized and also super branded and marketed, Like RPM and S2C and spellers method. )

Part 5 of a 5 part series about the ways harmful practices are being made to sound more appealing and how to spot the differences between helpful and harmful approaches.

Communication support is a desperately needed thing for so many autistic people and their families. So unlike some of the other things I’ve posted about this week, this is 100% a worthy goal. Unfortunately, many places that claim they can offer it are not delivering. 

In some cases, they simply don’t have the education to properly support communication needs (I’m looking at you, ABA). Other times they do have the proper education (ie Speech Language Pathologists) but they will gatekeep certain methods of communication, either because they believe harmful myths about them or they haven’t been trained in that particular method. Also, not every SLP knows about Gestalt Language Processing, so even an otherwise great therapist could be missing some information.

So here are some questions to ask when trying to figure out if someone is truly capable of offering well-rounded, neuro-affirming communication support:

Are they more concerned with making the client easier to deal with for others, or are they focused on the client’s rights, needs, and wishes? (We’re looking for the second one.)

Do they address the client directly, or do they speak as if the client isn’t even in the room? (We’re looking for the first one.)

Do they see speech and language as a behavioral thing? (Verbal Behavior and PECS are dead giveaways - and we want a NO.) 

Do they understand that an inability to produce speech has no bearing on a person’s ability to think and feel? (YES✅)

Do they only push for speech, see speech as the end goal, or value speech above all other methods of communication? (NO✅)

Do they honor things like echolalia, pointing to objects, and bringing an adult over to something they want as valid communication? (YES✅)

Do they honor things like refusal to participate, crying, and meltdowns as valid communication? (YES✅)

Do they believe that things like pacifiers, AAC, or responding to “non-functional communication” discourages speech/“functional” communication? (NO✅)

Do they know about Gestalt Language Processing and believe it is a thing? (YES✅)

Do they require “pre-requisites” before they will try alternative communication methods? (NO✅)

Do they require the client to earn time on their AAC device or remove the device when they deem it a distraction, essentially taking away their voice? (NO✅)

Do they know who to send you to if they aren’t personally trained in an approach they think would be more helpful? (YES✅)

Obviously, trying to find someone local to you with all the green flags and no red ones is kind of like trying to find a unicorn for most people. But if you have a choice between two or more therapists, you can at least go with the one who has more right answers and be ready to advocate/educate when needed. 

If you literally have only one option available to you and it’s not a good one, you can either be ready to advocate at every turn or just choose not to use their services. Yeah, that’s allowed! Not every autistic person needs speech therapy, and not all communication support has to be directly administered by a professional. You as the parent or caregiver will play a huge role in supporting your person with their communication needs, and luckily there are online resources and virtual trainings that can help you do that.

P.S. What’s the difference between PECS and picture cards, you ask? PECS is a whole ABA-based program that uses a limited set of picture cards and should be avoided for several reasons. Meanwhile, plain old picture cards are something that can be made and used by anyone without any specific program.

P.P.S. Zero debates about the legitimacy of Spelling to Communicate (S2C) or Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) will be entertained (translation - it will be deleted so don’t waste your time).

Intro time!

Name: Kiku (also other names because its complicated)

Gender: FTM, nonbinary, genderqueer

Orientation: Aroacespec, queer

Pronouns: He/Fae

Kiku is part of a DID system, and that makes things like names and figuring out who you are hard. Doesn't help that all of us hosts respond to Kiku and Kiku and another alter have been blurring together a lot.

We are a nonverbal higher support needs autistic person with multiple other disabilities. We are a full time AAC user for multiple reason.

We have apraxia, several learning disabilities, aphasia, adhd, hEDS, POTs, mcas, fibromyalgia, and are pretty sure we have spastic dipelegic cerebral palsy.

We are a mobility aid user (currently forearm crutches, a rollator, wheelchair and white cane) but we really need different ones (a different kind of walker, crutches that fit us properly, and a wheelchair that we own, the one we use belongs to our partner and they let us use it sometimes).

We were born and raised in Appalachia (North Carolina to be specific) and we have come to remember that that is a huge part of who we are. You can take the boy out of the mountains, but you can't take the mountains out of the boy, (once we get our hands on a print copy of Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White we'll put a quote here). We currently live in Tennessee, which is closer but not quite close enough.

We are pagan, raised christian, and havf religious trauma. This makes interacting with some communities hard.

We are a speller, and hope to soon have at least a few sessions of S2C to help with unreliable speech and motor loops. A speller is someone who points to letters on a letterboard or types on a keyboard to communicate. We call ourselves nonverbal mostly, but also use other terms, nonspeaking, minimally speaking, unreliably speaking and we have taken to saying "it's compilated" because it is. We call ourselves nonverbal because we are unreliably speaking, what comes our of mouth isn't what we want to say and often does more harm than good, but we can't just turn it off. We grew up, seeming to be speaking, but we couldn't communicate what we needed or wanted to and what we could say often got us in trouble.

Kiku thinks that is enough of a ramble.
