February 14-February 17, 2018 // Days 18-21 of Productivity (back-dated)

I’ve had a very busy productive week! On Wednesday, I mostly avoided V-day madness by having my usual back-to-back seminars (full of conversations that felt like an intellectual roller-coaster). On Thursday, I ran, had a job interview, attended my third seminar, and worked on paperwork. On Friday, I may have accomplished very little work, but did pick up a lot of books (the current count stands at 48!) and generally did a lot of walking around.

My weekend, although I don’t usually include it in my “100 days of productivity,” is also worth mentioning for the sheer amount of running around it involved!

Saturday involved a somewhat confusing subway trip to La Guardia because I forgot to double-check any MTA construction notices and hopped on the first Queens-bound train I saw (which, I should mention for those of you who do not live in NYC, was a terrible idea. A trip that should have taken 45 minutes took an hour and a half).

I also visited the new pet-friendly coffee shop by my apartment—Boris & Horton on 12 & A! Half-coffee shop, half-pet store, it was a little crowded with people and their pets on Saturday morning. So. Many. Dogs! 

I’ll definitely be back! Did I mention the shop sources their coffee beans from my favourite Brooklyn roasters? (Although perhaps I’ll stop by during the week, on the hopes it’ll be less crowded and more reader-friendly.)

On Sunday, I spent my morning enjoying a long run around Central Park. (Word to the wise, the North Woods section is hella hilly.) It was sunny, there was snow on the ground, with a bit of a winter breeze—more or less perfect winter running conditions. I picked up a latte on my way home from Birch Coffee on Lex&62, a little hole in the wall place, as a reward for running 16km. And was it worth it. 

In the afternoon, I walked around the village, stopped by the rubber stamp store I had spotted on Friday (I am looking for an ex libris stamp for my growing library, but at this point I’ll likely need to design my own) and the Strand (where I browsed their discounted book carts on the sidewalk to my heart’s content and picked up three novels for less than $2.50—as well as laid paper envelopes, two postcards, and a sticker. Which is why I never go to the Strand.). Finished off my weekend by grabbing dinner at Sarita’s Mac (or S’mac)—the mac & cheese joint on 1st—that provides the perfect comfort food for the grad student budget.

Week 5 of the semester starts tomorrow, and I am both exhausted and ready for all of the essay-writing and article-reading it’ll entail.

ps: Forget roses, carnations are the perfect Valentine’s flower. I bought a bouquet at Trader Joe’s for $2.50 more than 10 days ago and they are still beautifying my window-sill. (And yes, I bought flowers for myself—it seemed like the most logical option to get through the week leading up to the holiday without becoming a complete misanthrope.)

I love NYC so much. Edge was a great experience, and I'd definitely recommend it! The glass floor was a bit daunting at first but not bad after I got used to it.
