Growing up in the US you're taught that this country is a beacon of personal freedom and justice, which just makes it all the more heart wrenching when you get old enough to realize that this is not true. It could certainly be worse, dgmw, but man. It really stings when you sit there and let it sink in. So many people move here with the dream that things will be better- if not for them, then for their children and grandchildren, and my heart aches for them. Its so frustrating, because there's potential, and a lot of it. It honestly felt like things could have gotten marginally better, so to face the reality that its about to get a whole lot worse is agonizing

I have been thinking, for many months now, of trying to move to a different country. It would be difficult, but feasible, and there are many places I could go, but I'm torn. If I leave now, I'm leaving behind people who need me more now than they did before. Lots of people I know are queer or from immigrant families, or both- and I feel like it would be wrong to flee to safety when so many others are unable to do the same.

Every time I read a review of "Global South" country politics it's always "We are defying the US by doing this and this. And "This and this" is being friends with authoritarian regimes and not giving a fuck about victims of genocide. But hey! International leftist solidarity against the victims of American imperialism :) If you're a victim of any other imperialism then fuck you.
