We can argue reasons for end ships all day but if you can even comprehend that THIS is peak romance, I can’t even.

...you know, not really? The beats are all still there- died and got reincarnated as a toddler, sister left her at an orphanage because a tween cannot reasonably take care of a child, grew up in a pack of feral children and childhood sweetheart, got into shinigami school on scholarship with said childhood sweetheart, got adopted by her now-dead sister's widower with terrible communication skills, had some serious on the job trauma when her mentors got eaten in front of her, got promoted to lieutenant, got posted to karkura, got a McGuffin shoved into her soul by a mad scientist in exile, got sentenced to death as part of a different mad scientist's gamble to steal the McGuffin and kill god, you know how it is.

If anything is different it's that the general premise of the fic, such as it is, is "OK, if this character is as Kubo claims they are, how functional as a person do they actually need to be? And where would they actually fall apart?"

Rukia is, per canon, a Lieutenant. She got a little fast-tracked into the position by Byakuya, but she did EARN her rank as second-in-command to a division, and in Ukitake's case, she's first-and-a-half in command given how often he has to hand the conn to someone else. If Rukia was bad at her job, she wouldn't be a lieutenant. Seated officer to appease the Kuchiki house maybe, but not second-in-command.

Hence, I write Rukia as someone who's got the backbone to tell other people what to do in stressful situations (including her Dingbat Adopted Brother), who knows the rules and regulations and procedures of her job, like "Yeah, you literally cannot get sentenced to death over a misdemeanor we have MANY laws about 'no excessive punishments", and who will have some FUCKING WORDS to say to urahara about the whole McGuffin thing.

...The premise of "How Functional/Dysfunctional does this person actually have to be in order to have gotten to and stayed in their position?" has lead to some characters being Revamped, and others staying nearly identical. Shunsui is almost unchanged, Kenpachi has developed like nine new dimensions and all the scientists got WORSE :)

Given all the additions they gave to ukitake's history in the last episodes, if it ever came to tybw happening on your AUs would Kaien know about mimihagi and the kamikake ritual? Would he stop it? Would he be up there with Ichigo?

Presuming I choose to keep TYBW at all, my answer would depend on the universe.

I would say generally, yes, Kaien does know. But the timing of how he got to that information changes.

In Black and Blue verse, I imagine it was a secret Ukitake confides in Kaien. I do have drabbles written about BB!Kaien's reaction to Ukitake's sacrifice. I held off on posting them because they would contain spoilers for Kaien's powerset, with those same spoilers being the reason why Kaien is physically unable to go to Reio's palace (I might just post them anyway with the spoilers omitted).

In OMTSYA, presuming my events still loosely followed canon, I think Ukitake would still confide in him, but the timing would be different. I will also preface by stating Kaien and Ichigo already hate Yhwach (and by extension the Quincy as a concept) with a burning passion, and as the same hybrid as Ichigo, Kaien would be in that Reio palace fight. When Kamikake initiates, Kaien would be up in Reio's throne room. For forcing his beloved ex-captain-slash-work-dad to sacrifice himself, Kaien's hatred for Yhwach would transcend from "this guy needs to die yesterday" to "I will bathe in you blood, tap dance on your entrails and erase your stain from existence".

The latter is if I choose to keep the Mimihagi stuff, of course. I'll be honest and say I never really liked it. Like much of that arc, that plot point felt shoehorned, like Kubo thought "oh shit, he's literally the perfect counter to all Quincy power. He's gotta die. But I need to make him artificially relevant first!" and pulled this out of his behind.

Plus, I have this cute idea of Kaien and Ukitake bonding over their respective sicknesses (before Kaien gets his memories back and the underlying issue is resolved, obviously) and Kaien offering to introduce Ukitake to a cardiologist in the human world when the Rukia execution mess is over. Then a comedic omake of Ukitake showing up on the Kurosaki clinic doorstep to take him up on it.

The Gojo Clan is ranked as the third noble family within the Soul Society. They are illusive, enigmatic, and do not wish to associate with others unless absolutely necessary. Everything is done by a proxy, thus, there is one designated soul within the clan that will represent them. The greatest && longest standing member is the rare anomaly, Gojo Itsuki who as a son is considered somewhat of an oddity. Thus, he is the sire of the Six Eyes, the crown anchor of the family’s lineage. Most are aware of a Gojo due to their physical traits along with strong spiritual presence, the majority of the clan are women, they tend to wear hues of silver, light blue, dark blue, or teal which is considered royal amongst them. 

Satoru himself isn’t seen until Rukia’s execution, he acts as a diplomat keeping the peace && building bonds with the Royal Guard. In fact, his presence at that moment was merely to investigate while being rather nosy himself. While he appears jubilant, kind, over excited about everything his spiritual pressure is menacing && can quickly trigger fear even the impulse to buckle. That is depending on his mood or if he wishes to play nicely, which he isn’t, he is aware of the strength within him && what his birth means. There is a strange sense when one gets to know him that the role he is designated to wear is an empty crown. Seldom few know the truth of his being until it is later revealed; he is the Soul King.

Loves the living, envious of those who can transverse between death && life. He likes to hear their stories over tea with plenty of sweets. Though it’s rare to see his actual gaze as the Gojo Clan finds the bindings to keep away impurity, there is an overwhelming sense of sorrow, Satoru who wishes to leave the cage behind but cannot. He’s resigned himself to duty && fate for a greater ambition even if it seems futile. 

Short Zanpakuto, The Inverted Spear of the Heaven, yes this is a complete play on the weapon that nearly killed Gojo in canon. Infinity is considered a secondary addition, the shield barrier acts as a part of the sword, when pierced it can combust or explode in a final act to keep Satoru safe. He always jokes, with such a sword, you could fell the Gods && the Soul Society - wouldn’t that be neat? 

Long hair is a sign of luxury in the Gojo Clan, those who wear it often plate it or wear a loose fluffy braid, Satoru prefers the ladder. Delicately woven into his locks is a light blue ribbon to signify where he came from. It is a keepsake he adores deeply since it is one thing that resembles Satoru, not the Soul King. In his younger years, he is depicted as a man with an undercut and fearsome dark blue eyes. He also wears a haori over his uniform in pure white with silver tassels, a long dark red scarf safely pinned by an emblem of a dragonfly, a mark of the Gojo Clan that is seen within their jewelry, portraits, ect. 

I think if given the chance he’d probably love hiding out at the Shoten with Urahara. It would be hysterical if Satoru was a store clerk who kept check of all the inventory and even wrote various blog posts to entice customers over new sweet treats.

Another evening, another ball, another night of pretending to be the perfect image of nobility. Rukia kept the picture perfect smile on her face as she strode through the room on her brother's arm. It was her first time attending formally as a lady out in society. She could postpone it no longer as the head of the Kuchiki family would not allow it.

"She is of perfect marital age. Her beauty will fade eventually and it is imperative that we secure an advantageous match for her and the Kuchiki family. The matter is settled. Rukia Kuchiki shall begin the courtship for a desirable match." The elder straightened, dismissing them both with a wave of his hand.

That had been the end of Byakuya's pleading on her behalf. He was not the head of the Kuchiki family - yet. He had done everything he could short of declare her unfit to delay this inevitable affair. All eyes were on him as her brother was officially out of his mourning period for Hisana. It was unfair really, considering he would never marry again. Even more reason for Rukia to do so... eventually. At some point, Rukia managed to slip away from her brother, leaving him surrounded by a group of hopeful ladies. Her dress was scratching at her and it was hard to move freely in these shoes but her face betrayed none of her discomfort as her gaze moved uninterestedly throughout the crowd. Until a certain red head caught her attention. He seemed different than the others but perhaps that was just because she had never seen him around before. She made her way toward him in a way that didn't attract attention, standing a few feet to his side. Her violet eyes studied him for a moment before she spoke again to him.

"The name of the painting on this wall. It's called "I burn for you." She offered him a slight incline of her head. "And I read your name on the guest list. It's the only one I didn't recognize."

An offer to walk in the gardens already? Well he was certainly a bit more forward than most others here. It was intriguing. What was his angle here? She smiled politely, turning her head toward where her brother was still otherwise engaged.

"I'm afraid my chaperone is rather occupied right now. Though I would give anything to escape the formalities of this smoke and mirrors." She waved her hand toward the rest of the crowd, her words unnoticed with the orchestra playing. Her attention returned to Renji, eying him up and down. "I'm afraid I'm not familiar with your estate. Are you from here?"

Rukia clapped her hands together, smiling brightly. "Perfect! It's absolutely perfect!" She donned the ears to complete her rabbit costume, making sure to adjust her hair around the ears just so.

She paused to look over the costume Ayame was showing to her, smiling once more. "Those flowers perfectly compliment you, Ayame-san. You will look stunning as a -er ..florgeez?" She frowned, trying to work her tongue around the strange syllables.

"Here, let's get you dressed and then you can help me draw on my nose and whiskers."

Ayame was working on trying to get the ear juuuust right, continuing to bend it at the wrong angle but… eventually getting it right. "How's 'at?" She stood back and looked at Rukia's outfit, trying to judge it as if it were one of her crafted puppets.

"Ah oh! I got uh- Sum'in…" She usually wore a large puppet controller and just called it an outfit, but this year she had a… what did these living kids call it? A Pokémon? "I made the outfit myself. Thought it woul'n' be too hard t' go dressed as a gian' flower." So she had a bouquet to go around herself and a mostly… green outfit. "Thinkin' it's called a Florges?"

In my opinion, Rukia being settled and having a family is nearly a prerequisite for Rukia assuming captaincy. That or some other significant event for her, which I don't know the shape of at the moment. In canon, it's only when her child is more grown that she actually takes the title(10 years after the end of the war), so she remains acting captain for a long time even if fully compliant. I would suggest by default that you assume she's lieutenant but fully assuming the responsibilities of an acting captain of the thirteenth if wanting to do something post TYBW. If you say post-TYBW I'm usually picturing this length of time.

OR if you want full captain Rukia, just remember that you are adding at least a 10 year gap for her to take up the rank... >3> I'm open to other ideas on discussion as well, just talk to me on them so we're on the same page.

Not noting this because I want to avoid the verse where she's captain. it's the opposite really. I think this point is very interesting, and want to get into the headspace of her here and what leads up to this more so. It's really more of an invite because I want to detail out before she makes captaincy and her headpiece and ten years is lot to fill in for my brain and I know there are significant things that happen before that point I want to fill in.

Some headcanons on her and captaincy:

She will actively respond to Captain Rukia, and or Kuchiki-taichou even while just acting captain, but make fun of you on getting your eyes checked or something.

With the passing of her captain, she's very reflective and actively refuses the title or pressure to take the rank. In her heart is some uncertainty in her life's direction, and some thoughts on making the most of life, where that takes her is open though. I don't think it specifically needs to take the shape of canon, but it is some kind of journey or change in focus for her. She's stops just looking at what's in front of her and maybe even looks back and beyond.

Her absolute first priority after thousand year blood war is looking after what remains of her squad. She knows she's now the highest officer that remains for them to look towards after they've lost someone who has been there so long and was important to so many. More than herself, she puts her squadmates first and will shut down and hide her own grieving or emotions to look after them and be the sign of strength that they can lean on.

She attends meetings in place of a captain for the thirteenth while acting captain.

Rukia still thinks she has a lot to learn, on leadership, and particularly on her bankai before taking on the full role of captain.

You could change my mind with a good thread on it or maybe have the right person talk to her, but this is my current mindset, until something makes me think different ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

in my canon but two steps to the left verse (arturo happens before the twins graduate, so theyre around for actual manga canon) they would both end as lieutenants. fujimaru as isane's lieutenant (bc i hc him as konoka-leaning, purely based off matsuri being shit at cooking and him being slightly more kido-aligned than her) and matsuri as rukia's lieutenant (bc in this au they were around for kaien's death and are extremely upset with ukitake and hold him responsible for it, and rukia wants a lieutenant who will hold her accountable like that). basically just replacing kiyone and sentaro lol
