guys. i’ve got it. 73 Yards lady is Mrs Flood.
distracted by the omnipresent Susan Twist appearances, we all conveniently forgot about her since Christmas.
“Hilary Hobson” = Anita Dobson
Tumblr media Tumblr media
say it ain’t so
bonus evidence: in the teaser clip, 15 says “it never ends, the war between the land and sea”. what do we call a “war” between water and land where the water’s winning? a Flood.

I don't know if I'm excited or frustrated at the 'future children' angle for Susan's origin. On one hand... I'm very interested in the possible links to the likes of Miranda, the Other etc.
On the other hand... ok confession time: This may make me a minority in the fandom, but I actually really dislike the 80s-90s retcons of Susan's origin. (Birth of a Renegade, Lungbarrow etc.)
I kinda just like her and the Doctor being some of the last surviving members of what was once a family on Gallifrey. I find the mystery and tragedy of what happened on Gallifrey, with implied student uprisings and political assassinations, far more intriguing than any twists saying "actually she's not really his granddaughter". Fortunately, some things can be canonwelded into that (eg. Susan really could be also related to the president / descended from Rassilon), but stuff that actually gives her an origin elsewhere is always a pain.
Idk. I just see once being a parent (and losing it all tragically) as such a crucial part of the Doctor's background and Susan fits very well into that as far as I'm concerned. Anything disconnecting her from that, or worse erasing it completely, ultimately damages what I find to be one of the most compelling things about the Doctor and Susan. :/
The few posts I've already seen talking about this suggests this is an unpopular opinion, but I'd be interested to know what people think, and if they agree or disagree...

criticizing capitalism. criticizing religion. criticizing war. some incredibly metal lines. the bug about ruby's kin. the whole snow thing coming back. the whole "parent love" thing, and the doctor using it to relate to john. oh my god this was amazing

Okay. So: what if the woman wasn't saying anything to people who talked to her, but just a exuding a general "stay away" energy? Because she embodied Ruby's future self who's spent her whole life thinking about the fairy circle and wishing they hadn't disturbed it, wishing they'd just stayed away. She appears to her younger self as a reminder of the mistake of not staying away and if Ruby sends anyone over to the woman, they feel the strong STAY AWAY vibes linked to Ruby and stay away from HER.
It could also be a part of the curse that Ruby is supposed to face this alone without help, so any help who interacts with future her is sent away. Maybe the curse is to live a life tortured by the mystery of the distant figure, never able to get close enough to recognise your own features, never able to get help from others, never realising who the figure is until you become it. And maybe the point was to learn to respect the fairy circle and embody the "don't step, stay away from it" energy your whole life until you die, then your spirit is sent back to the moment of your mistake to give you one last chance to prevent and correct it. Only you can be your own salvation, because you need to learn from your own mistake instead of anyone else doing it for you. A version of Ruby lived in a pocket timeline to learn all this and help another her avoid the same mistake.
And maybe since the Doctor apologised for accidentally breaking the circle and seemed respectful while Ruby said it looked like something kids made and started opening the notes, she was the only one who needed to learn to respect it and its significance. So even the Doctor was removed from the equation because Ruby needed to do it alone, and maybe the fairy curse sensed that he's seen so many things that he'd solve it quicker than her and make it too easy instead of her learning for herself.

Is anyone else annoyed by the lack of characterization of ruby Sunday?
Ok I'm not saying she doesn't have any at all, we've seen snippets here and there, but only that. it's like she's allowed around 3 big reactions per episode and nothing else.
I feel like they are trying to make us focus so much on the mystery around her but not actually her.
It's like her character is build up somewhere but they just forgot to show us
Even in 73 yards where she is the main character, it feels... empty, I kept waiting for them to show us more but they keep just giving us surface stuff
I love her, I love what they've giving us so far, but where's the rest?

wait so. ruby sunday has her own perception filter?
the 73 yards in 73 yards could be the influence of the tardis, even if the whole episode i assumed that the tardis stopped interacting with her. but it could not be chameleon circuits when she was a baby on ruby road, because she hasn't met the tardis yet.

It's sad that people think that RTD trolling his audience is still clever and brilliant; it's not.

I've made multiple posts about '73 Yards' and some of my interpretations of it but I haven't actually wrote about what I think it's about.
As many people have pointed out not having any clear answers alongside fear of abandonment is the point of it, but beyond that, my interpretation is that the story is about finding joy in the unanswerable.
By a certain point in the story, Ruby very much gives up in trying to solve what's happening with the woman and just accepts it as part of her life. She still suffers because of the woman, but you can see Ruby has grown an attachment to her that has made life easier to go through.
At the same time, it's very much about giving something our own answer and finding power on it. Like Kate says, we try to give rules to what we can't answer to reason with what is happening, so Ruby finds hope on the woman and ends up reasoning that she is there so she can save the world from Mad Jack <3.
It very much feels like an extension from the exploration of faith as shown in 'Boom'. While 'Boom' showed the dangers that can cause, '73 Yards' explores why The Doctor said we still need it. At the end of the day is clear Mad Jack wasn't the answer to why the woman is there, but does that matter when believing it was could lift Ruby to stop a corrupt politician that could have ended the world?
At the end of the day I think that's the message of the episode. Sometimes, there's more important things in life than getting the exact correct answer, searching for the truth might distract you from what's actually important.
The episode illustrates this at the end very beautifully by having the woman disappear, so who does Ruby see instead?
Tumblr media
"There was a woman. She was just standing there. Maybe she was looking for someone."
Ruby pondered so much about who was the woman that she forgot what her original goal was, what she was actually trying to find. Not an answer, but her friend The Doctor.

Ruby is so cool and if they would just drop the mystery around her parentage and tell us id love her 100x more.
She’s inherently connected to Christmas and there’s a hidden Xmas song in her soul? Sick as hell. It randomly snows when her parentage gets brought up? Fucking cool. We don’t know why any of that is the case? My gods just kill me
Also she shoulda been the one to find the lost chord bc it’s just cool

lol thinking about how ruby finally got to "cure" the source of her abandonment trauma. only for the doctor to abandon her at the end of the episode. bruh moment.

It is NO FAIR that I had to put up with Clara for three seasons and we only got Ruby for 8 episodes plus a special. I demand justice!
