Jason works almost exclusively in Gotham, clearly sticks to the alley. If a case takes him out of town, his skin itches until he’s back under the familiar smoggy air.
Other heroes are similar and although Superman is a notable exception of turning up all over the globe, he still has a primary city under his care.
So it isn’t surprising that Arsenal and Red Hood operate almost exclusively on different coasts. What is surprising is running into each other on an op that presented as unrelated cases only to turn out to be one and the same.
The vigilantes spot each other from opposite surveillance points and coordinate their moves. Neither are stupid enough to jeopardize an op by being cocky outside territory where they would have a home-field advantage. So even as it chaffes against their independence, they finish the takedown together.
Arsenal ends up with a graze that has to be taken care of and Hood takes him back to the abandoned building he’s been working out of for the last two days. It has a rough set up of a table, chairs, and couch but a fully stocked medkit, so it’s not the worst place to have to crash.
Conversation is sparse and stilted. Red Hood had been on the JLs list of people to apprehend for a few years before being taken off, and only then he had a strained relationship with the hero/vigilante community. Arsenal, while not going as far as Hood, was definitely on the further end of the vigilante spectrum. Unwilling allies did not best friends make.
However, the two of them had an understanding. Even if they weren’t friends, they knew the game better than any newbies.
When Hood had to remove part of Arsenal’s uniform, he caught sight of a wound he hadn’t seen the man take in the fight but clearly needed to be addressed. Bringing it up gained him a wry smile and a reference to adoptive father figures.
Which, well, Jason knew how that went pretty well actually. And in a moment of odd vulnerability, unzipped the collar of his suit, highlighting the scar, and told Arsenal he knew the feeling.
Neither could say why, but they had an honest to god talk about it. It felt like running into your childhood best friend in the grocery store. Too honest and yet too little time. No exchange of contact info because you both know you won’t really meet up again.
Jason talked about Bruce and Roy talked about Ollie. They talked about drug use and the Lazarus Pit and the Titans and coffins.
All told, stitching each other up and showering took a little over two hours. At the end, Jason offered to let Roy crash there since he was in worse off shape and shouldn’t be driving.
By morning, Hood was gone.
The feeling of being known, if only for a while, remained.
Different ending.
It was a move the both of them only made because they thought they would never see the other again. Another face in the endless sea of masked vigilantes popping up and being beaten down. The scene changed frequently, both of them had experience dropping off and cropping back up. There was no real expectation they’d work together again.
Except that experience with subverting expectations bit them both in the ass. Because they kept running into each other. All over the country. In foreign countries. If one of them left their city it became inevitable they would run into the other.
Because it didn’t end there.
Stitching each other up, revealing some vulnerability, leaving before dawn. What had started off as accidental became, not routine, but frequent. Something to be looked forward to.
For a long time that’s all it was.
Until out of the blue Jason gets a call from an unknown number. On the other side is Roy, words slurred in pain. He explains that he’d gotten his number from Dick and had a favor to ask, because he really needed someone to stitch him up.
Jason teeters on the decision for a moment too long and has to interrupt Roy to give his ETA. He doesn’t bother with a location because Barbie can track him off the call. He almost curses himself for caring so easily this time, but he doesn’t think he’ll regret this one. Both he and Roy have too much experience in that department to walk into this tentative friendship and be blindsided by what’s coming.
When he gets to Star City, he sees the same knowledge reflected in Roy’s face.
They have both been hurt and caused hurt. Their vulnerabilities were choices, ones they had chosen to share as the price of being known.

Roy, busy with something: Ok cool, can you answer it for me, pumpkin?
Lian: He’s asking if you want meatballs or hamburgers for dinner
Lian, texting back: Same thing, bitch. Different shapes
Lian, turns off phone: 🙂

One of those "Jason decides to leave vigilantism after coming back and just lives his normal life" AU. He doesn't tell his family, he doesn't become Red Hood. Instead, Talia pays for his college and he becomes an English teacher. He fundamentally disagrees with Bruce's methods, but instead of taking it into his own hands to teach him a lesson he decides that's not his problem anymore. New life, new me.
He lives in a normal apartment, gets a couple of rescues to keep him company, makes civilian friends and just leads a completely normal and happy life away from rogues and vigilante drama. And then one year he starts doing the roll call and stares at the name like oh. Oh no.
Lian Harper is in his class.
Cue to Roy romancing his daughter's hot teacher while Jason tries to keep his identity a secret. Roy doesn't recognize him -obviously- he's much older and they weren't that close back when Jason was Robin, but he's one step removed from Dick who would absolutely make the connection. Roy is just really tired trying to keep a job and parent a preteen on top of his nightly activities, and Mrs Peterson is such a breath of fresh air into his very chaotic and intense life.
Lian is torn between wanting his dad to be happy, liking Mr. Peterson because he's a really cool guy and not wanting to be known as "the teacher's daughter". It's a conundrum for her.
Roy is also being tormented because this man is perfect on paper but he doesn't think he deserves normal, let alone perfect. He can't bring himself to trap this upstanding man in the chaos that is his life. Meanwhile Jason is split between his long forgotten crush who seems to be the solution for his miserable romantic life and trying to keep his secret from him.
They flirt, then regret it, then get flustered by the other, then flirt again in a cyclic back and forth that feels safe but doesn't get them anywhere. They keep getting so close to an actual date, but Jason keeps chickening out at the last possible second. The other teachers are desperate for them to resolve their weird tension because sir, this is a place of learning.
Then some villain holds the school hostage while Roy is out of town, and while he gets there Lian and Jason have to keep the rest of the school safe. When Roy arrives Jason knows his cover is blown and he'll probably have to move cities but he's also relieved for the back up. They end up at the Harper's later to patch up and Lian is so excited about the whole thing because her cool teacher is even cooler now, right dad?
Meanwhile Roy, who may not have known the second Robin much but is not stupid, is connecting the dots. These two men are staring into each other's eyes with the intensity of the sun like "don't you dare". They manage to stay civil until Lian retires to shower and from then on it's madness.
Finally Roy understands why "Mr. Peterson" has been rejecting his advances all this time. Jason begs him not to tell his family, he doesn't want to go back after how everything went down and how they seem to have forgotten him. Roy tries to defend Dick but in the end decides to pick his battles and agrees not to tell as long as Jason will finally give him that date they've been talking about. If that's why he said no all those times, of course, if he's not interested then that's fine...but Jason accepts.
When Lian comes back she announces her approval and demands a raise to her grades for her instrumental role in getting them together. She gets a fresh batch of cookies instead, which isn't the same, but will suffice.

Roy, walking in with Lian and Jason close behind: “Sorry we’re late. We had to wait out a terrible tantrum.”
Dick: “That’s okay. ‘Terrible teens’, am I right?”
Jason: “Oh no… it was me. It was my tantrum… Anyways, I’m fine now.”
Lian: “You’re thinking of terrible twos, Uncle Dick.”
Roy: “You’re both wrong. This is terrible twenties.”

Jayroy's relationship, to me, is like those emotional support dogs they have to calm down tigers and reign them in. Surface level, Roy is the dog keeping Jason in check. You look slightly deeper, Jason is the dog. You strip their relationship to its core, and both of them are the tigers masquerading as the dogs

Jay and Roy have been together for a while, and it becomes clear that they're in it for the long run. Lian realises since Jason is her other dad now that means Uncle Dick is now her uncle twice over. She makes the mistake of bringing this up at a family event.
Everyone immediately starts calling him Double Uncle Dick (DUD for short). Eventually it devolves into a myriad of terrible nicknames. Duncle Dick, Double Dick, Double D, Dick Dick... it goes on and on.

There’s a scene in this fic where Roy is described as wearing a Naval officer’s white suit and then Alfred outfitting him with a white and gold tux.
I would give my first born for Roy wearing a Naval officer’s uniform. I think Jason Todd would too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like the first image as a reference for the outfit or pose, but no idea how the hair should be done, between Roy having longer or shorter hair. These were the photos I had saved on my camera roll over a year ago.
Credit to the artist of the last photo. I found it on Google Images.
Description from fic below the cut. I highly fucking recommend the series.

Roy and Jason ship is such deep and messy relationship that one day I would like to explore.
They both have issues (no, one is not worse then the other, they have issues that are bad for them don't fight me) and it would be such a way to explore how they handle those issues together. Jason is probably a wall made of concrete that won't let anyone enter no matter what, and roy has tried to jump over the same way some people did to him when he was an addict, but he can't and roy has to live knowing that he only has less than half of Jason's heart.
Maybe one day I will write something long for them
